This cleaner got the highest ratings on Consumer Reports and mostly good reviews, so after researching we took ours home.
The one evident item from nearly ALL the posts is that the plastic tabs on the handle of the fill tank are very brittle and break off after little to minimal use or wear. Well, I must be the exception because mine didn't even make it to the first use as one of the tabs was already broken from the brand new packaging and the other snapped off even with VERY careful placement on the first fill. Oh well...I guess if it was to be expected I can't complain too bad. You can still use it with those tabs, just a little more annoying to keep the handle in place.
On to the performance. I have used another Hoover model in the past that was half the price of this one and I will be honest in saying that this one does not clean all that much better, but whereas I had to wait 6-8 hours for the carpet to dry before with that model, this one has the better suction and dries the carpet MUCH faster. We could walk around the floor in socks within an hour and they were barely even damp.
The attachements are nice and work fairly well. The tank doesn't hold vast amounts, but its also about how much water you inject/use in your cleaning and the area you are cleaning. Overall it got our 15 year old light-colored carpets pretty clean and got most of the stains out. Just wish Hoover would not use such cheap and brittle plastic, especially since this seems to be such a known issue for a long time.

I bought this item last week and immediately had buyers remorse. What was I doing spending so much money when I already have a perfectly acceptable Bissell Green Machine? I decided that rather than packing it back into my compact car, I would put it together and give it a whirl. Well, my wood floors that I mopped only yesterday were scrubbed, and you should have seen the dirty water! I decided to clean the living room carpet after that. It was so easy! My back always hurt after using the Bissell Green Machine. This is nothing like that! The carpet looks great, and I plan to clean it and scrub the wood floors much more often. Boy, am I glad I gave it a shot. Well worth the money!

Best steam cleaner if you own pets

I bought this when it first came out from Best Buy in 2007. It lasted till 2013 and still worked great except the hand tool hose where it attaches to the machine finally quit working. Prob would have been an easy fix but because I use it a lot with four animals and had it so long I decided to buy the same one again. Very pleased second time around. Hoover made some improvements since 2007 and the price went down a bit. Best Buy was again the cheapest price for a new one, so I ordered it again. What they improved was the solution tank caps, which are much easier to take on and off. The spin scrub brush has more bristles. The dirty tank handle they added springs to help hold the handle on, which on my old one the handle broke twice, so we will see long term if it holds up any better, but still fully functional even when handle is broke, you just have to make sure lid is sealed. Maybe its because Mine was 7 years old, but this new one has much better suction power and I was amazed at how much dirty water I got when using the new one. The one complaint I do have that hasnt changed from the old one is the clean and soapy water mix if you leave the tank sitting in the machine. I just take it off when I am done and store it separately not parked in the machine. Both have got out any stain, hairball, etc. i always use hoover solution for pets, fill the tank with hot water, and if needed sometimes spray a spot with wool light pet carpet spot remover then use the steam cleaner. I have never used the hard floor attachments on either machine but if it does a great job on the carpet I cant see it not being great on hard floors. Being this is my second time around purchasing this exact machine I still give it 5 stars. If you have pets it is a godsend!! And will make cleaning messes way more easy!

Gets the job done but READ MANUAL!

We bought this yesterday. It did not take very long to put together. We used it to clean the kitchen and bathroom floors (linoleum and tile) with good results. The tile floors get clean but they don't get dried as well as the linoleum due to the grout lines. However, a quick wipe after and no problems. The machine will leave a line of dirty water on the floor after you shut it down so you may want to put an old towel under it when you turn it off.
MANUAL SPECIFICALLY RECOMMENDS USING ANY DETERGENTS OTHER THAN THOSE MADE BY HOOVER WILL DAMAGE THE MACHINE AND VOID ANY WARRANTIES. Keep this in mind. Name brand Oxyclean will mess it up.
I had no problems with the clean/dirty water tanks or using the attachments after reading instructions carefully.
You do need to clean the machine after each use for best results. Particularly the handtool and hose attachment. Run clean water down the hose to get excess dirt off or I imagine it will build up over time effecting performance and possibly causing a smell.
Only reason I give 4 our of 5 stars is that this is a BIG bulky machine and does require some TLC to work properly.

We have now owned 2 of this particular Hoover model steam cleaner. With each one, the first year or so it was fabulous. After that, the brushes stopped working, plastic pieces cracked or literally broke off. The features are fabulous, but when you have to add to that statement, "the first yr at most", it leads to a fair quality. Performance was good, til it was about a year old. See the pattern? Gave the product 2 chances (replaced with a second one), only to receive the same overall product with same disappointments!
We recently replaced it with a Bissel, and it is no comparison to this cleaner. Sadly, this "disposable" Hoover beats our current steam cleaner, but how many will anyone throw out and keep buying the same product??

This carpet cleaner works the best. Even better than rental models. The new feature of the ability to clean hard floors is intriguing. I haven't tried it yet. The only Reno for 4 stars is the durability of these cleaners. I had an earlier model that lasted about 5 years. Not bad after heavy use, but it did require some minor repairs earl on. A locking tab for the pickup tank broke. The clean water tank and broke and had to be replaced. That one had been redesigned and was replaced for free. In the end, a pump solenoid inside broke, so I chucked it and got another. We have four (too many) pets, and used the heck out of it. I'd say more than normal

Initially hesitated to even bother transporting to my apartment based on experiences with all prior shampoo machines of which there have been many.... Within the first pass on a section of carpet Hoover has sold me on one once i return this one to my parents. I am almost excited to continue shampooing a carpet. If a carpet shampooer is something you need then your quest shopping for one should now be completed BUY THIS ONE.

I had originally purchased the 7412-900 model, because all I needed was a carpet cleaner but when it arrived broken I had to travel to my local store and ended up purchasing a more expensive model - the all terrain cleaner - 7452-900. Well I used it immediately on my living room carpet and I must say I'm pleased. THERE ACTUALLY WAS NO STEAM but the heat from the motor probably helped in leaving the carpet much cleaner and drier than I expected. I,m especially clean with the way the high traffic areas looked afterwards, the carpet got a new life. I will continue to use it and if there 're any surprises I will update.

This product is amazing. I never used a carpet cleaner before in my house. I own a dyson, and I thought that got my carpets clean, however this unit pulled more dirt out of my carpet. It was amazing. It's easy to use and durable.
Some of my favorite features of this unit:
A) Tanks on the outside, easy for me to get to and clean and replace liquids.
B) Auto Rinse- I feel that I get all of the soap out of carpet
C) Auto height adjustment- the unit adjusts the height automatically
D) Heated Cleaning- I was told by a best buy associate that this gets around 90% of the water out of the carpet. That's way better than I was expecting. The associate told me that Hoover blows the heat off of the moter onto the carpet to spead up the drying time.
The biggest downside is the weight of the unit, but they are all that heavy. All I need now is a Floormate so I can do my kitchens and bathrooms!

I actually cleaned my carpet only 5 times in the 3 yrs I owned this lemon cleaner. The cleaner only worked well for one cleaning. Then, the water tank tabs broke off. Needed to send the cleaner in. During the next cleaning, the motor burned up and had this replaced. The next cleaning, the motor burned up again, and we had it replaced ($140)Then, the tank that holds the clean water and detergent broke. Next cleaning, we paid $140 to get the motor replaced again. Then, the water tank would not seat correctly and all the water would flow right out onto the carpet.. Finally, the motor burned out again after cleaning only 1 room and when I called The Geek Squad, the man told me not to invest one more penny into this piece of junk. He advised me to throw it in the garbage and buy a different brand and I took his advise. I invested enough into this cleaner that I could have purchased a new cleaner. My cleaner looked brand new as I hardly ever got a chance to use it. My Hoover spent more time in the repair shop than in my home. Do not buy this product .

I bought this carpet cleaner when my three year old decided that he needed to start pouring his own milk. Since our dining room has carpet and milk was being spilt on it daily from my sneaky three year old I thought it was time to invest in a steam cleaner.
The first one I bought did the dining room perfectly but then caught on fire during the second room. I realized that the carpet shampoo I had bought was a concentrate and there is a big warning about using the correct kind of soap to avoid fire so I think that's what caused it. I had the protection plan so I was able to switch it out no problem. I used the CORRECT amount of detergent this time and it has worked perfectly for about six months now. In fact I have become addicted to cleaning my carpets. I run the steam cleaner about every 6 weeks or so. I only use detergent though every 2-3 times. Usually I use vinegar in the detergent section because it's a great stain fighter and really bringhtens the carpets. (vinegar is safe because it doesn't sud like detergents) Even when I use the detergent I spray hot vinegar on all my stains about an hour or so before and theyy lift right out. I do spend a lot of time on my carpets, going very slow when I am cleaning and I think that also plays a part in how clean my carpets get. I LOVE seeing all that nasty black dirt and grime going down the drain. My only complaint is that the water tank is kind of small so I have to refill a lot. If I went the average speed though I doubt I would have to refill except between rooms.

I did not find it hard to assemble. There is a quick start sheet packed with it that I thought was very clear. It took me about 10" to set it up. I did the carpet where pet stains were. It worked well getting rid of the stains and pulled a lot of dirt out of the carpet. The water in the collection tank was absolutely filthy! I do recommend reading the manual about how to put the water and cleaning solution in and how to set the controls as well as actual use on the carpet. I did this and had no trouble or issues whatsoever with the product.

Love that this cleans carpet and hard floors. I wish the dirty tank was a little bigger in size, at least to match the size of the clean water tank. I do spend a lot of time emptying and refilling, but a small price to pay for having clean floors. It is vary loud when cleaning on hard floors but headphones worked fine. Hose attachment holder doesn't do the best job when mounted on the cleaner, but nice that it can be removed and only used when needed. I was a little disappointed that the spin brush attachment tools doesn't spin faster, but it still worked fine on the stairs. Overall very happy with the product and only wish I had purchased it sooner!!

Overall I'm happy I bought this cleaner. It cleans carpets really well, with good suction to pull the water out of the carpets. Seperate water resevoirs for soap, clean water, and dirty water are a plus -- I didn't think I'd appreciate them as much as I did. Haven't tried the hard-floor cleaning yet but works like a champ for carpets.
On the down-side, the hose and accessories are somewhat cheaply attached to the back, and the hose doesn't stay coiled nicely under some circumstances. I wish they had a better way to manage all that. The price is a little steep as well, but if you can afford this unit I don't think you'll be disappointed. I read on some other websites that many people had problems with some little thing here and there breaking, so we bought the Best Buy service protection plan, but haven't had to use it yet. (knock on wood!)

Shoulda bought the Bissel

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I should have gotten the Bissel. This cleaner does alright on cleaning but more from your own efforts than its. There is no heating element. You add the hot water. The water/detergent fill tank is hard to position so that it locks in place and generally leaks as you are trying. I was attracted to the fact that it had a separate tank area for clean water/solution and one for waste water, but its sad that that has become the only thing I like about it. It cleans alright if you don't mind the hassel, but considering how much this thing costs, its not worth it.

We got a used Hoover steam vac from a garage sale years ago, and loved it! However after a few years it became more expensive to fix then what we wanted to spend so we decided to buy a new one. We take it home, excited, sure it would work even better than our old one, but we used it for one room, turned it off to empty the water compartments, and it had no power and would not turn back on. :-( Very dissapointed! I took it back to Best Buy, and got a new one, no problems, but just the hassle of having to stop in the middle of cleaning to exchange. Hopefully this one works better, and we don't have any problems with it! Over all though, from our previous experience, it's a great steam cleaner, and is worth every cent paid!

I bought my Hoover just before Thanksgiving so I am a lil late on my review.....I live in Ga where there is plenty of rusty colored clay than just dirt so when it rains and you have a dog and kids coming and going the carpet gets really ugly looking which does not take long. Bought Hoover and was LOVING the results it gave my carpet especially my stairs where the traffic was heavier. I had compliments from everyone who came in my home that have seen my carpet before and have seen the clean results now. I actually wanted to lay on the carpet for once knowing that it was clean :D anyway, awesome steam cleaner would recommend.....

Cheapest Expensive Carpet Cleaner Ever

First use - I cleaned an area rug and then began the first bedroom. About 10 swipes in, the brushes stopped moving. I took them out, cleaned them, and popped them back in. Easy enough, right? Not so much. After puzzling over their lack of movement for a few minutes, I realized that the plastic device that propels the brushes had snapped like a twig. Allow me to reiterate that this was my FIRST USE of the machine. I followed the directions meticulously to ensure that the machine would last a long time - especially at this price - and that just didn't work out.
I bought this machine after purchasing the higher rated,comparably-priced Bissell. However, when I tried to put the Bissell together there were no screws and half of the attachments were missing. The box was completely unopened so this was a factory error, then the customer service rep implied that I stole the screws. Seriously? Hopefully my third time will be the charm. I would really like to clean my carpets.
