Brand response from HP Team

Hi there.
I'm sorry to hear that your printer has performed poorly. I can readily understand why the print quality issue and puzzling software display you describe would be a troublesome start to owning a new printer, so I’ll point you toward a resource and provide some information I hope will help.
I can’t tell from your review what’s causing the scratches in the center of your prints or why the model number in the app doesn’t match the printer itself, so I suggest that you contact us directly at +1 800-474-6836 so we can help you assess the situation and guide you through any applicable troubleshooting. (Please note that because of restrictions on personal movement and workplace attendance associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, wait times for agents are longer than normal. Thanks in advance for your understanding.) To expedite the process, I recommend gathering the following information before the call:
- Model number - Serial number - Your location - Case number (from any previous contact with HP support
I'll also mention that HP printers have a one-year warranty from their purchase date that covers hardware as well as ink supplies, so if it comes to that, you might consider making use of it. You can verify the warranty using the following link: support.hp.com/us-en/checkwarranty

More Ink, Less Printer

The trend with printer makers nowadays is to give more ink, but that doesn't come without a cost or tradeoffs. With the HP Smart Tank 651 its immediately obvious that the tradeoff in more ink = less printer and lower quality. I'd say for the price you're getting $300 or 2 years worth of ink with a $150 printer that may not even last that full 2 years.
The 651 is disappointing in almost all aspects for anyone who has used HP's extremely durable and easy to use Officejet line of printers.
-Build quality is subpar, its extremely light and flimsy right out of the box.
-It has a BLACK AND WHITE and NOT color LCD display and it is TINY overall.
-The top scanner and doc feeder tray is super flimsy
-All capacities from the built-in paper feeder to the copy feeder on top of the scan tray are vastly reduced.
Literally the ONLY positive of this printer I can find is that it comes with a TON of ink. Overall it is very easy to use and set-up, the HP Smart app is very good and makes set up and printing a breeze. It also functions fine, I just don't know how durable it is given how cheap it looks and feels.
This is a decent printer for those who want low maintenance printing and easy set-up without worrying about ink for a few years. However, for the price, I still prefer my much more robust Officejet printers, the latest of which the HP Officejet Pro 9020 makes this look like a toy.

Great looking, quality printing and convenience!

I'm loving this printer. Its very nice looking, the white accent is welcomed. I like that its not bulky at all, compared to other all in ones, It has a very flat low profile. Setting it up was easy, you can either use a pc downloading HP's software, or you can use their mobile app. You pour the ink containers into it, and then install the printer heads. (the box says they include ink to last for at least 2 years, so that is still to see...). Be aware though, this printer is more designed to be used via wireless out of the box, as it DOES NOT include an USB cable (nor a telephone cable for the fax function), at least those were not in my box...Those cables are so cheap, that I feel HP should have at least included them to add more convenience on how the user is going to decide to use the printer.
I'm loving that to scan, you have to options, you can either feed the paper from the top tray and it will take it (kind of like the ones you will see on a big office printer), or you can open the scanner bed and scan the "old fashioned" way. Very convenient.
The paper feeder is good enough, but I wish it would fit more pages, so I don't have to keep putting more pages manually, but I guess its a trade off, since the printer is so thin, considering its an all in one.
It also has a fax function (and line pass through), in case its needed.
I highly recommend it to anyone looking to setup a small/home office and save on ink. As the you are only replacing the ink itself (the printer heads stay on the printer), they cost way less than the old printers were you would replace the whole cartridge containing the connector, logic and ink.

The reason I didn't say great on this printer is because for all the bells and whistle it does have I'm kind of disappointed it doesn't print documents faster. Overall though it does print good colored pages. I love that it comes with all the ink! Also that when you fill the tanks you can do so without a mess very mess free! Connecting to different devices is fairly easy too. I'm happy with my purchase! I would definitely recommend it to a friend or family member! I bought one because a family member had one lol!

Great ink tank printer

The HP Smart Tank 651 wireless all in one printer is easy to set up and prints great. Setting up the printer was easy and straight forward. HP provides easy to follow documentation and they also recommend that you keep the box and packing materials to secure the printer if you plan to transport it anywhere, especially the box that holds the print heads in place. There are a few steps in the setup and initialization, after powering it on, takes a few minutes, then follow the prompts and prepare the ink. They are spill free and easily snap into place to fill up the tanks, be sure NOT to squeeze the bottles. After you fill up the ink tanks, you must install the print heads and then you are prompted to print out an alignment page and you use that to calibrate the printer. Be sure to download the HP smart app or visit 123.hp.com to finish the setup of your printer. This is when you connect it to your Wi-Fi and complete the set up. I have had other “tank” type of printers and this is the first one that I have had that actually has separate print heads. I am happy with the overall operation of this printer.
The ADF on top works well for scanning and copying. Printing is great on this printer and I am sure with it being an HP it will run forever and always just work. HP states that this will print 22 pages per minute at the fastest (draft) setting. It also has fax color as an option, but I don’t have a phone line and I was not able to test this out. I have had great luck with their printers in the past and this one seems well built and I have no worries about it. Printing from your mobile device is also supported here, I used the HP Smart App to accomplish this, but it also supports Apple AirPrint as well.
The best part of this printer is that you are given two years of ink in the bottles and depending on your printing it will easily last you that long with normal home use. These types of printers have flipped the conventional pricing for home printers. They are more expensive upfront, but the consumables are inexpensive, and you end up saving a lot more money this way.
Pros:
2 years of ink
Printer speed
Color Fax option
Duplex printing
HP Smart App
Cons:
upfront price

Laser like black prints w/ quality color

I wasn't sure we would switch back to an inkjet printer after using a laser for the last 5 years, but I am sure glad we did!
We already printed our 50+ Christmas cards this year, full page card stock, then each cut down to two 5x7's. The paper fed well and the printed product was impressive. Bright color, sharp edges, on some tough to print on glittery holiday stock my wife picked out
Out of the box, the printer does take a lil bit of setup. Carefully remove the secured tape areas, follow the instructions carefully, and you will be printing in no time.
I really like that the print heads are swap-able, but the cartridges are built in and refillable. This should solve two of the major issues with printers in cost of ink, and fixed print head getting gunked up, requiring maintenance most home users will not do.
Device connected to wifi very easy, and we easily added it to all 4 Win 10 computers in our home, as well as the HP Smart print app on our mobile devices.
You can take a photo of a document as a copy with your phone, and send it to your printer no matter if you are 5 feet, or 5000 miles away.
Very happy with this printer, only thing I wish it had was a large paper capacity. Other than that, this is a winner!

I bought this to replace a ten year old HP. My main objective is photo printing. It does a very good job, so far printing photos. It stays connected wirelessly much better than the old one ever did,I also like the ink tanks over cartridges, and it so much easier to use. I am very happy with this printer.

Setup was pretty easy. I found out that others problems with getting it to print right away had to do with popping down of the weird looking blue thing that goes on top of the two inserted cartridges inside the printer. Once I thought it wasn't working when i send a print job as it displayed on my laptop that it wasn't connected to it, but it printed after all, just give it a minute to process. It appears a lot slimmer than my old printer and is very easy on the eyes. I haven't used all of the functions yet but it seems to be going pretty well.

I bought this printer for a summer camp I run and also for my therapy office. So far, it has only been used at camp. It is replacing a Lexmark printer that cost over $400 and stopped working in just over a year.
So far, so good. It prints easily and wasn't too difficult to set up. I like that you can print easily from any device.
Not sure about the ink. How long will it last? Only time will tell.

I haven’t fully tested this yet, but it’s a pretty solid home printer.
Pros:
-Slightly cheaper than the epson equivalent.
-Ink reservoirs is a big plus, not only for the wallet but also the environment.
-Wirelessly print from your computer or mobile device using the app.
-Nice design that isn’t an eye sore and doesn’t take up too much space.
-Scans/copies/faxes.
-Good quality prints for a home printer.
Cons:
-It’s not the fastest printer, especially when printing at the highest quality.
-I had to do the ol’ power cycle trick to get the wireless network set up. It could find the network but would not connect, and it was a bit frustrating until I unplugged in/plugged it back in. So if this happens to you, try that because it worked.
-Doesn’t have the ability to do automatic double-sided printing like the epson equivalent does. So you have to manually flip the page(s). Not a huge deal for me, but worth noting.
-Slightly more expensive than some of the other home printer options available.
All in all, I like it so far. Can’t speak to the longevity of it yet, but if it lasts longer than my old home printer, I’d say it’s a win. I’ll try to update with more good or bad info as time goes by.

I’ve been using the HP Smart Tank printer for a few months now, and I can confidently say it's one of the best investments I’ve made for my home office. The setup was incredibly simple—HP’s step-by-step instructions made the whole process smooth and stress-free.
The print quality is outstanding, whether I'm printing documents or full-color photos. Text is crisp, colors are vibrant, and there’s zero smudging. But the real game-changer is the ink system. The refillable tanks are super easy to use, and the included ink bottles lasted me way longer than I expected—I've already printed hundreds of pages and still haven’t run out!
It also connects seamlessly to Wi-Fi and works great with the HP Smart app. I can print from my phone in seconds, which is a huge convenience. Plus, it's surprisingly quiet and fast for such a compact machine.
If you’re tired of constantly replacing cartridges or dealing with unreliable printers, this is the one to get. HP nailed it with this Smart Tank series!

Setup is intuitive and fluid. The fact it comes with 2 years of ink up front is awesome but what I really like is if one color runs out I only have to replace the color and not the whole darned cartridge. Printouts are crisp and tight…this is a great design and buy imo.

Great machine plugged it in (hardwire) and it prints like a champ. A lot of ink! Remember it spills. That's where it stops. Won't connect bluetooth or any other way. Won't scan won't do anything but print! Requests for assistance were not of help but each request involved a $29.95 subscription totaling $129.00 so far; I can't get one HP service TURNED OFF. I have a PhD in Technology and this is bad. Printers are an after thought and None connect with the customer in mind. I love the precision printing! Replacement Printer cartridges can NOT be purchased! 5 years into production spares are not available; Buy a whole new printer like I did!

Fast and the ink lasts a long time! This is my first ink well printer and I have to say I'm very impressed. Its been months with constant printing and I still haven't needed to refill. My old Ink jet would have been empty weeks ago and the print quality id also better. I highly recommend!

I love this new printer. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of 5 is due to the limited two-sided printing. You can do two-sided but it’s a manual process. Therefore, you can not do two-sided printing from a remote device, like your IPad. Love the new ink cartridges that last a long time.

This printer was fairly easy to assemble and get going. So far we have only had 2 issues with it and one of the it had to be unplugged in order to get it to print from a wireless device. On another occasion I was also instructed by the printer when it wouldn’t print to remove and check one of the print heads. It was easy to do and I found nothing wrong with it but I had to do it 2 times to get the printer to come back online and print. Hopefully these are one time events. The large print tanks are great and are very easy to fill. I haven’t had to refill them and suspect I won’t for a long time since there’s just 2 of us that use this printer. The quality of the paper printing is good and the colors are very nice. I have not tried to print any photos yet but might try that just to see how it works. I generally don’t use a printer to print my photos but send them to a printing service especially with my previous printer which the ink was very expensive. The refills on this printer seem very inexpensive in comparison. Hopefully the print heads, which look a lot like another printers ink cartridges, will last quite a while. One negative thing I have seen is that it is slow to print if it hasn’t printed in a while. The printing speed on it is ok but not wonderful. The unit is very sturdy and fit into the place I had my previous printer. The scanner is very nice in that you can use it wirelessly and not just from a computer but from a phone or tablet. It has several locations that you can have the end product of the scan end up, email, Dropbox or a hard drive location if you have one saved. The paper tray is not huge and holds maybe 30-40 sheets so that’s a little bit disappointing. I’m not sure why they didn’t put the paper feed into a drawer under the paper output. It could have held more paper and not been a dust collector like it is mounted on the back. I have not used the fax but I did notice that when I went to plug it into a phone line that there is only one jack and that is an input. So if you need a phone and fax, you need to get a phone line splitter. We rarely need a fax and if we do we’ll just plug in the phone line to it. Overall I’m pretty happy with this printer although while I was writing this review I decided to try the sheet feeder and scan from my iPad and the printer locked up again. I unplugged it as it was stuck in shut down mode for quite a long time. When it came back up I scanned from my iPad from the sheet feeder and it worked ok. I feel like the pages were just a little tilted to one side and there was a small black mark at the bottom of each page that’s not on the scanner bed-so they didn’t feed quite square. I do feel like the software side of this printer is a little bit difficult to get everything set up and working and can be a little time consuming. But as of now it all seems to be working well.

I purchased one for me and one for my in-laws. Working from home and being older, the thought of no more ink cartridge after ink cartridge after ink cartridge, was irrésistible! After heavy use. I have yet to worry about refilling the printer. Well worth the money!
