Having used the MyQ and Aladdin Connect. The insignia wins. I hope that at some point insignia will give this an Alexia skill and an android app, but that’s only because why not. As far as it working with HomeKit it does it works quite well $69 is cheap and the least expensive route to HomeKit. Very pleased with it and easy easy easy installation. Did I mention easy installation and setup, did I actually do a setup? Obviously but it was completely painless! The only issue is where the home kit sticker is located. It is blocked while garage door opener plugged, not really a problem but more of a overlooked detail.

TL;DR Adding a 0.5" (1.27cm) thick piece of wood between the sensor and a metal garage door fixed my problems. I attached a photo of my sensor installation.
I installed this system the day before Thanksgiving 2019. Before purchasing, I had read the mixed reviews, including the helpful modification suggested by Joparad. I was hoping for the best, but somewhat expected trouble. I decided to give it a shot because it was on sale and I knew I could return it if it didn't work out.
Installation was a piece of cake, but unfortunately right away I experienced inconsistent behavior. Sometimes everything worked as expected, other times the Apple Home app would say there was an obstruction or the door was closing when in fact there were no obstructions and/or the door was closed fully.
I tried the recommendation proposed by Joparad (shim the bottom of the door sensor a bit to change its angle), but unfortunately that did not work in my application. This is still a good suggestion and may work for other people -- particularly if your door has a bit of angle to it. There is a metal ball tilt sensor on the printed circuit board -- you can hear it when you move it around. It sounds a bit like a small baby rattle.
I called Best Buy customer support. I reached a human very quickly, but as expected their play book for troubleshooting was pretty limited and I had already done the usual things. He suggested returning it to the store for an exchange.
Before doing that, I decided to see if I could figure out why it was behaving inconsistently. looked closely at the sensor electronics assembly which is visible when you remove the screw to the cover to access its battery. I noticed that the antenna on the door sensor is very close to the door itself. In my case the grage door is made of metal so I wondered if perhaps the antenna was being detuned or its radiation pattern impacted by the metal door in close proximity. I wondered if perhaps the sensor and the controller were having RF communication problems. I don't know the details of how frequently the two try and communicate with one another.
I decided to try spacing the sensor away from the metal door by adding a roughly 0.5" (1.27cm) thick piece of wood in between the door and the sensor.
I'm glad to report that after doing that, the system has worked flawlessly for 4 days -- with over 50 up/down cycles.
If you have a metal door, you may want to try out this solution. I hope it helps a few other people get the expected experience from this otherwise pretty simple and useful product.
Taking away 1 star because the product did not work as expected without me needing to home brew an adjustment to make it work. If I had not had that problem I would have given it 5/5 stars.

I FIGURED OUT THE OBSTRUCTION PROBLEM

I FIGURED OUT THE “OBSTRUCTION DETECTED” ISSUE PPL ARE HAVING.
I got the item on sale for $45, and decided to give it a shot despite some issues reported here. Installation was easy!
But when I used Apple HomeKit to open and close the garage door, it would work BUT the status of the garage was incorrect whenever the door was closed. HomeKit would say it’s “closing” or “obstruction detected” even though the door was completely shut.
I felt that it was an issue with the sensor on the door because when I was playing around with the sensor before I installed it, tilting the sensor in my hand back and forth would cause HomeKit to show the door “open” or “closed” properly.
I suspected that the level in the sensor was off a few degrees so it thought the door was slightly tilted open even though it was closed. So I reinstalled the sensor with some shimming on the bottom edge to make it tilt up very slightly as shown in the pic. Now it works perfectly.
3 stars for a decent product with subpar construction and for making me waste all this time figuring it out! I would recommend it if you can get it cheaper for the $45 I paid.

I can't believe how easy this was to install or how well it works! I bought two because I have two separate garage doors. I'm getting more and more into this "smart home" stuff, but a lot of the homekit enabled products out there are expensive and buggy.
I thought for sure I'd run into some unforseen installation problem - it's the story of my life. But no, I had both of them installed in under 15 minutes. No drilling or special tools.
This only works with homekit and it works quite well. Sometimes the status takes a few seconds to update but beyond that it works as advertised. I've even tested the homekit automation where the garage door shuts when I leave and opens when I get home. Amazing.
I bought these on sale for $45 a piece but I would pay full price for something that works so well.

This item was so awesome and installed in minutes. I am so glad I found this and just learned that Insignia was a Best Buy brand. It worked the 1st time and really nice to have this protection on my garage door. Not hard to install. Very easy. IT works with MY HOME on my iPhone 11 Pro MAX App. I was so glad to see that it worked with MY HOME APP. Thats why I bought it in the first place. I always get the GEEK SQUAD PROTECTION with each Purchase.

I've installed a lot of garage door openers lately with wifi and was thinking about replacing my perfectly fine opener for a smart one. Till I found this. As an apple homekit user already I thought I would give it a try. And guess what? It works! Just as it says it does. It was very easy to install and set up.

Doesn’t work with the Ryobi GDO system. wish it did. Ryobi doesn’t have a learn function. It just needs power between both terminals to trigger it. I hear it click but doesn’t seem to give it enough power to trigger it.

Hi Billy,
Thank you for your feedback, at the time of launch for this product we did not have access to all available garage door openers for compatibility testing. The Ryobi garage openers incorporate a Smart Indoor Keypad which unlike other compatible garage openers do not have the simple 2-wire interface to the Open/Close wall button panel switch. We will continue to investigate other methods of interface to Ryobi and other garage openers and will update the compatibility list accordingly.

Reliable w/HomeKit Thus Far

This has been working reliably in a HomeKit ecosystem. There's a short lag when opening HomeKit as the Insignia queries the system to assess if the door is up or down. This might be common among all devices like this but when you compare it to how Hue lights are almost immediately updated, a device like this will seem slow.
Going from a completely un-smart garage door opener, to one that can be observed and operated via HomeKit, this device does the job.
There's a safety feature that limits voice control of the door to unlocked devices. So an iWatch can take voice commands, but an iPhone will have to be unlocked for "Hey Siri, open garage door." Just mentioning it because it was a surprise but I see why they did it – to prevent unauthorized opening/closing. Such as a criminal yelling through an open window "Hey Siri, open garage door." That can't happen with that safety measure in place.
This product was inexpensive (around $35 near Black Friday) so I wasn't expecting the moon. As long as it maintains consistency which which it has thus far.
There is a battery in the small sensor attached to the garage door itself. Should last a year or so. Not a huge deal but if there's another product that needs no batteries at all, that would be a plus.
Possible Useful Tip: To get a better WIFI signal, I wired the plug-in box to one of the doorbell opener buttons which was closer to the home wifi signal instead of up near the opener itself. The device doesn't "need" to be next to the opener motor to work but this setup was not outlined in the installation instructions. The device only needs the two doorbell wires going to it, and to be plugged into an outlet. Wiring to the doorbell activator made it much simpler to install and helped with the WIFI signal which can be an issue for detached garages. The doorbell button still operates normally.

This homekit garage door opener installed easily enough, and I was able to pair it to my wifi and Homekit system. Initially, it worked fine. For a week or so. Then it would show as not responding in the home app. After discussing with Insignia support, they put my device on the beta software release channel, ensuring me that there was a fix. (Google it - there are TONS of people with issues with this device) It would work for a day or two, not respond for a day or two, and if I'd unplug it and plug it back in, it'd work for another few days or so. I considered plugging the unit into an outdoor TIMER to reset it once a day in the middle of the night. Insignia support dragged me along until the product could no longer be returned (it seemed like they were actively working on it, and one would assume this could be fixed with a software/firmware update), and now it's to the point where the garage door always reads as "closed", unless I ask siri to open it. If I do, it opens, and shows as "OPENING" in the Home app for about 24 hours, during which time it's totally unresponsive.
It seriously blows my mind how they could do such a poor job creating such a simple device. I have a wireless access point in my garage which some wifi cameras use, so I know signal is very strong. I purchased a "OpenGarage" wifi opener for my other garage door, and in addition to being cheaper, it's worked totally fine. It uses a sonar proximity sensor to see if the door is opened or closed, which removes the failure point of a battery-powered stick-on door sensor like the Insignia unit uses. Today I ordered another OpenGarage and I'm going to throw this Insignia unit in the trash.
To be clear, this unit NEVER worked longer than a few days at a time, be it on the public or beta software channel, and Insignia never offered to refund my money because they know all of the units have this issue and were hoping they could fix it with software, which they never did. Seriously, do a google search for issues with the Insignia Homekit garage door opener, or "insignia homekit garage door opener no response". I suspect that anyone leaving a positive review wrote it very soon after installation or installed the unit but doesn't really ever use it. It blows my mind that they're still selling this, over a year later. They should cut their losses and pretend this product was never sold.

I purchased this originally in late Nov 2018. It was on sale for roughly $25 off. I've been wanting a solution for HomeKit and my old garage door for some time. I did not want to have to have yet another Hub with myIQ's in my smart home solution. No hub required for this. Installed easily (initially), less than 10 mins. My Wifi coverage to garage is okay+, not great. Product worked for a couple times (immediately after installation that night) but then failed in homekit with a "no response" message. Tried reinstalling several times with removing wifi info/reset and starting over. Device would work once maybe and then go back to not responding in homekit. At that time in Nov there were very few reviews or reported issues/resolutions so I called their support line. I was told it was a known issue and to return the product and wait until late December to replace since their development team was working on a solution targeted for mid December. I asked if that meant a firmware update and if so how would it be applied since their smart home app didn't support/include this item. The CS person could not answer those questions so I returned the device. Fast forward to Jan ... I checked on this device and saw many more reviews with one reviewer matching my issues exactly. They stated they resolved the issue by simply replacing the 2450 battery that comes with it and goes in the sensor. The reported that everything then worked great. I took a gamble and reordered the device along with picking up a new energizer 2450 battery. If it didn't work I would just return the device again and be out the cost of the battery. I installed this last Friday when it arrived and it had the same issues as I ran into on my first installation (the no responding issues). I then replaced the sensor battery with the new 2450 and it has been working almost perfectly now for the last 5+days. I have not yet received a no response status from homekit. The other reviewer stated he or she tested the 2450 battery that comes with it and it was weaker than it should be. I'm just glad it works. As to my comment of working 95%, It has gotten confused once or twice but it has always worked it out within a min or two. I am only giving it 3 stars for the following reason....shipping with cheap sensor battery that seems to be the cause of the issue I and others have had, poor customer service, and not including the garage door opener in the Insignia smart home app for a firmware update avenue.

Set up was smooth and fairly simple. I had paired this to run off HomeKit which was fairly easy and after initial set up it works about 90% of the time. At times however, over the first 3 weeks, when many devices are on the network, it does hang up with updating its status. I removed and readded the device through HomeKit and it seems to have fixed the problem to date (additional 2 weeks of usage). Overall it has been very reliable and easy to use.

I give it 3 stars for the unit functionality itself. Plus 1 more star for the relatively cheap cost without the expensive and locked ecosystem of MyQ.
This is not for some average person that doesn’t know much about tech like router config, etc.
It connects to Apple HomeKit easily as long as you start off with your router’s 2.4 GHz band. Your iPhone that you first use to setup needs to be on that too and not the 5 GHz.
The trigger for the garage opener is with a really simple open / momentary closed relay. It turns out it doesn’t work with my garage opener because what I thought was a dumb open/close momentary switch on the wall is actually a proprietary button with a circuit board that looks like a smartphone motherboard. So I hacked the switch to connect the Insignia unit direct to the wall switch’s momentary switch on the circuit board after testing out which paths are open and gets closed with the switch.
After some fiddling with some tiny wires and soldering, it worked!
My only real gripe is I wish the garage door open/closed sensor was a simple hardwood magnetic prox switch instead of that wireless thing you stick on to the door that needs a battery. This way you’re certain if it’s open or closed. Sometimes it doesn’t fully register open or closed and once it said the door was closed when it was actually open. That can be a scary situation if you go to bed at night just looking at the app’s status or worse yet if you’re away from home.
If you’re outside the house and want to control the door, your phone could have a weak Wi-Fi connection and it doesn’t respond properly. It works better when I’m outside the house I turn off the Wi-Fi on my phone most of the time. Sometimes it just doesn’t connect and hangs in “opening” or “closing” status until I manually cycle the door from the wall switch. Otherwise when it works properly, it’s pretty cool.

I bought this with low expectations because of the reviews & expected to have issues with the sensor that goes on the garage door. I read all the reviews but decided to test it out anyway. It took me a while to get the wires in the garage door opener properly as my garage is dry walled & tracing the wires wasn’t going to happen & normally black is ground, not on this, but black went with red wires so that slowed me down. From there I decided to mount the sensor on the center metal frame at about 5ft with 3m adhesive. Instantly had issues just like everyone else says in the reviews but I refuse to believe that I needed to install a block of wood. I decided to just go off the instruction manual & mount it where it says to on one of the end rails at the very top (refer to the attached photo). Instantly worked, haven’t had any issues at all, so go future buyers & current owners, INSTALL PER INSTRUCTIONS. All the sensor problems are user error!

We bought two of these garage door controllers for our two garage doors. The garage door opener closest to the entry door had a strong wifi signal but the other opener did not. So, ultimately this garage controller is mimicking the opener's wall button signal and the wifi signal is strong by the garage door buttons. Unless I am missing something it shouldn't matter which end of the garage wall switch's signal wires the trigger signal comes from (at the wall switch end or at the door opener end). My garage door opener wall switch is mounted next to the entry door into our home and fortunately, an electrical outlet was located close by. I plugged the Insignia controller into this wall outlet and connect the controller's two signal wires to the wall switch terminals instead of at the opener as described in the directions (see pictures). The garage door's position sensor was positioned as per the directions. The controller easily paired with the position sensor. The system works perfectly!

Install was relatively easy. Functionality seems to be fine. It only works with HomeKit (Apple) and not Alexa, but that is fine. I like it better than ll the other products out there since it is simple an does what you want it to do, closes and opens the garage and tells you the status of the garage. Other products have too many interfaces, apps, wires, features that are lame. Again, this is simple all around and works. I had NO problem with the sensor like others see claiming. Just install it flat and not tilted and as indicated and it works. Imagine that! The only negative I found was that the lock feature on my wall switch now does not work. I think this is by design, maybe. Not a deal breaker. For the price and ease of use and remote functionality, GREAT. Note: it does require AppleTV or an iPad as a hub for its wireless connection.

I really wanted to like this unit because it’s Apple HomeKit enabled, it’s super affordable, and It’s easy to install. The reality is however that even after I installed a WiFi access point in my garage (only 10ft away from the controller) it still has issues 2 out of the 10 times I’ll use it.
When the thing works is so convenient. I ride a motorcycle to commute and it’s really nice to just open up the Apple Home app and open the garage with a push of a button. No need to carry around a garage door opener. Unfortunately I’ve found myself too many times sitting on my driveway fiddling with the home app with gloves on because the insignia controller says “no response”. It’s not an Apple problem because all of the other 15 IoT devices in my home work flawlessly through the home app.
Overall if you’re looking for a cheap way to enable WiFi controls on your garage door I’d recommend giving this a try. You won’t have a flawless experience 100% of the time, but ultimately whenever I have problems I can get it to work after fiddling with the Home app for a few minutes. If you’re a perfectionist though, I recommend going with something else albeit more costly.
