This is a tough product to review in such a short period of time. I feel like it’s going to take me a couple of months and repeated uses to give a complete fair evaluation. However, going to get my initial impressions so far. This is a vacuuming and mopping robot with house and room mapping capabilities.
The initial unboxing and set up was fairly straightforward and simple. We already had a irobot Roomba and I reposition that to The second floor of the house. So I set this Roomba up for the main floor and used the app to set up. It did take a couple of tries to connect to the Wi-Fi system, but it eventually did, and recognized the new Roomba robot vacuum. After the set up, we started the robot on its first run. The first couple of runs of the robot Was essentially a mapping run of the first floor layout.
After that run, I was able to pull up a map on The iRobot app that the Roomba created. I got to say it did look very close to the Layout of Of the main floor. The map Had some of the rooms labeled correctly, but it did require Me to label some of the rooms that were unnamed. But the process was fairly easy. After that, I did create a new Favorite , which focused on two of the rooms, kitchen and family room. I did a sample run and unfortunately did not go as planned. The vacuum just stayed in The room own area where it was Parked in docked. Which leads me to think that perhaps The map was labeled incorrectly. This is going to take some time to work out the kinks, but I am willing to give it a chance.
As far as the actual functioning of the robot and doing its job. So far so good with the actual cleaning up and vacuuming. our first floor is mostly tile with a couple of rooms that have rugs. The robot does well switching from the rug to tile without any issues. It also seems to do well with avoiding obstacles and getting around them as well. The app is fairly easy to use an intuitive. I’ve not yet use the mop function, but once We get out the kinks of getting the vacuum to actually vacuum the area we want we will use that. The one downside is my wife had to physically pick up the robot and place it in the room where she wanted it to vacuum. This defeats the purpose and of course the robot has a lot of learning to do and hopefully whatever processor it has and capability it can improve. So with that I have to give it four stars but it should really be 3 1/2 at the moment. It could improve overtime.

I have been in dire need of updating my robot vacuum, because the technology in this field has been growing so fast! My old one just wasn’t cutting it and always left me wanting more.
Enter this model… with the new technology and features and the app. This is what I’ve been waiting for! Right out of the box I set it up on my main floor and started setup. Super easy and very intuitive. At first use, mapping was very accounts it didn’t keep running into walls, plants, Christmas decorations, etc! It would sense the object and turn around or go around it. The app seems to be easier to use than my old vacuum and I enjoy these features more. Using this vacuum
During the week saves me so much time, hassle and energy because it keeps everything clean and even empties itself in to its base station. I actually love the mop feature, and I honestly didn’t think I’d even use it. It does a good job cleaning the tile and leaves no mess behind at all. I was very impressed with it and it was just a bonus for me because I didn’t expect it to be as good as it is!

Inside the box for the iRobot Roomba j5+ you’ll find the robot, the base station, a detachable power cord, a combo bin for mopping, the mopping pad, an extra filter, an extra edge brush, and an extra disposal bag.
Setup was super simple. The robot and the base station are fully assembled out of the box. Simply position the base station in your home, plug it in, dock the robot, then install the app on your mobile device and go. I was honestly mapping and vacuuming just minutes after unboxing.
The mapping function is really good. The robot easily and accurately discovered each individual room and the floor types. The app then allowed me to block out areas where the robot should not vacuum or mop.
Overall, the cleaning ability was really good and actually improved on each successive run. The robot did struggle a little to climb onto loose rugs but, to its credit, it never got itself completely stuck. While cleaning the robot will send you pictures of obstacles it encountered for you to review. Suction power was pretty good but obviously not on par with a full size vacuum.
Operation overall was very quiet and can run at night and not be a nuisance. Battery life has been good with me being able to clean the entire first floor of my home without coming close to exhausting the battery.
The mopping functionality is alright. It will perform better on very flat floors. On uneven floors, the dragging pad it uses simply doesn’t get into deeper recesses.
The base station is overall pretty small for the functionality packed into it. The auto-empty feature works well.
Some other notes:
- The robot relies heavily on optical detection for mapping and cleaning and recommends you actually run it not in the dark.
- The base station employs a bag for the auto-empty feature meaning you will need to start buying bags again which seems…dated.
- The leading wheel of the robot will get pet hair wrapped around it. However, it is designed to be removed easily to be cleaned.
Overall, this little bot is really good and will help keep your home cleaner from day to day. It won't fully replace your full size vacuum or the need to mop periodically, but it will reduce the frequency you need to lug out the big boys.

So let’s face it roomba is the king of robot vacuums and this will not do anything to change that. Key features
1. Self-emptying – no hassle of dumping the bin every time you clean
2. Maps the house – this works pretty well
3. Proven interface – the app is by far the best I’ve used
4. Visual navigation – this feature worked really well
5. Mop capability – it’s there more on that later
So let’s start with the setup – typically the Roomba app works flawlessly in setup however I had a few issues in getting this one to connect. The unit I have took much longer to get into pairing mode than the instructions said – don’t know if it’s an issue with the one I have or normal functionality. However, once I did get the app to recognize it everything worked smoothly (at least in the Apple world). After the app was set up I was able to add it to the Google Ecosystem with no problem and utilize voice commands
Working in the Roomba app – can’t say enough good about this – the app is very intuitive and easy to navigate. I find that it’s the benchmark that I measure others to
Cleaning – nothing is going to replace the old regular vacuum for being able to get in corners and overall suction power but this little robot does a pretty good job. The suction power is top-notch for this level, there are better ones out there but not at this price point. The edge cleaning on this model was very good. For the most part, it picks up stuff to the wall edge, as expected it struggles to get into corners
The mopping feature leaves a bit to be desired – the only word of caution I would add is to make sure you vacuum ahead of time – you change the head and tray out and it basically drags a wet pad across the floor – not saying that it doesn't clean but just not quite as well as maybe I expected
The self-emptying feature is, at least for me, probably the best feature that this system has. Not having to empty it or remembering to empty it every time is great
Overall I’m a big fan of Roomba – they seem to consistently make a great product that works well – I would recommend this particularly if you can find it on sale.

I have used about half-dozen robot vacuum cleaners, including models that also mopped, over the last decade or so, and they all do pretty much what they’re supposed to. Some are more sophisticated than others in such things as whether or not a smartphone app is available to control the robot, whether or not it can map and remember the floor plan of your residence, how well it does on carpets, battery life, and so forth.
I have to say that this iRobot Roomba Combo j5+ Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum & Mop is about the best I have used. Overall, it just seems “smarter,” and it has some nice features that I’ve not seen until now. One thing I’ll point out right now is that it handles my somewhat-thick but not-quite-shag carpets very well.
As far as setup, it’s typical. Download an app, have the app find your robot, and follow the setup instructions. Then you proceed to an initial clean where the robot maps your floor plan and retains the map for future use. The instructions are very hand-holding in nature, so it’s difficult to go wrong.
The first thing you are told to do is have the robot do an initial clean and mapping run. This is done immediately without waiting for the robot to charge up its battery on its base station. It just starts the process with however much charge is in the battery as it comes out of the box. If there’s not enough charge to complete the process, the robot stops the mapping and returns to the base station to recharge, and then it goes out again to continue mapping.
My house is about 1800 square feet, and I had the robot map pretty much all of it. That floor space is about 40% carpeted and 60% wood floors. Overall, it took the robot about six hours to fully map the floor, returning to the base to recharge a couple of times along the way. Each recharge session took about 90 mintues (the app indicates down to the minute how long it will take to recharge and when the robot will resume its work), so, of the six hours to map the house, only about half of that was time when the robot was actually out roaming around the house. The other half of the time, it was in its charging dock.
Once the mapping is done, the app suggests doing a second cleaning and run to allow the robot to confirm the mapping of your house. This took a couple of hours.
Once this is done, and the app keeps track of what you’ve done, the app suggests proceeding to setting up the mopping apparatus to let the robot do a mop of your hard floors. For this, you must block off any carpeted areas because the robot won’t stop at the carpet’s edge. There is a second attachment to which you attach a mop pad and fill with water, and the robot quickly mops the floor. This was done, in my case, in about half an hour.
This robot is “self-emptying,” which means that, when it finishes a vacuuming operation, a fan is activated for about 10 seconds (and it makes enough noise to wake the dead) that blows the collected dust out of the collection bin into what is essentially a small vacuum-cleaner bag housed in a compartment on the base station. It’s really very nice, because having to constantly pause a robot vacuum to empty a full dust bin is one of the annoyances of robot vacuums I’ve encountered. No such issue here.
Another thing about the self-emptying feature is that the robot doesn’t just do it at the end of a cleaning run. Rather, it keeps track of how much dust has collected in the bin and, when full, it pauses cleaning wherever it is in the house, goes back to the base station, and does the self-emptying operation. Then it resumes vacuuming. As I said, this robot is pretty smart.
But keep in mind that the vacuum cleaner bags are not empty-able, so you’ll have to keep extras on hand to replace them as they get filled up. The robot comes with two of these bags, and two cleanings of my house were enought to fill one of them about half way. So I’ll be buying these bags fairly regularly, but I’d be buying bags regularly for a conventional vacuum cleaner as well. It’s a very small price to pay, in my opinion, in exchange for not having to empty dust collection bins all the time.
If you get one of these, you will not be disappointed. It works well, there is good communication between the app and the robot, and there’s nothing I’m more glad to give up than regular vacuuming and mopping of my floors.
