They also appreciate its mapping capabilities, user-friendly interface, and ability to clean well, especially when it comes to pet hair. As a home user, the iRobot Roomba i8+ (8550) Wi-Fi Connected Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum is an excellent option for those who want to maintain a clean home without putting in too much effort. The self-emptying feature is a game-changer, as it reduces the frequency of manual emptying and saves time. The vacuum is easy to set up, and the iRobot Home App is user-friendly, making it easy to control the vacuum and customize cleaning preferences. Additionally, the voice command feature is very convenient, and it can be integrated with popular smart home devices such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
The Roomba i8+ is also efficient at cleaning carpets and hard floors, with its three-stage cleaning system and adaptive brushes that can tackle different surfaces. The edge-sweeping brush does a great job of cleaning corners and edges, which can be challenging to reach with traditional vacuum cleaners. The high-efficiency filter is another great feature, as it captures a high percentage of allergens and dust particles, making it an ideal option for those with allergies or pets.
One downside of the Roomba i8+ is its price, as it is one of the more expensive robot vacuums on the market. However, considering its advanced features and efficiency, it may be worth the investment for those who value convenience and time-saving. Additionally, the vacuum's durability and longevity are also factors to consider, as it can last for years with proper maintenance.
Overall, the iRobot Roomba i8+ (8550) Wi-Fi Connected Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum is an excellent option for busy homeowners who want a convenient and efficient cleaning solution. Its advanced features, cleaning performance, and ease of use make it a top contender in the robot vacuum market.

My favorite house employee! Even after just 1 pass, my floor alteady looks clean and glossy. I love that it adapts when the layout of where it's cleaning changes. I love that i can schedule the hours i want it running or the days in the week. It really goes through every nook and cranny, but most of all, under my bed which i always had a hard time cleaning with a handheld vacuum.

I purchased this item as a “deal of the day”. While it won’t replace any deep cleaning, it is perfect for what I need. It vacuums under my dining table and weaves its way through my dining chairs. It even vacuums under my bed. It also makes a great transition from hardwood floors to thick wool rugs and ceramic tile. I love it when it returns to its base to either empty the bin or recharge the battery. I cannot speak for long term reliability since I’ve only had it a few weeks. For me personally, it’s as good as it gets.

At first, I really thought I was going to have to return it. My husband attempted to set it up to vacuum the house, and it seemed to have a “mind” of it’s own! We’re really not tech savvy, but after a bit of playing with the app and settings, I figured it out. It didn’t come with a lot of instruction, but to some I’m sure it comes easily. It still seems to have a mind of it’s own sometimes, but I think I figured out the mapping. We have a 2600 sq ft home which we recently put in vinyl flooring throughout. I usually shut off the bedroom doors and let it go, then put it in our room with the door closed.
Not perfect of course, but I like that it gets under the bed in our room. We have dogs that shed and it can be a mess!! I also love that I can let it go, and be doing other housework while it’s going. So far the battery life is really good! It will return to the base and empty and/or charge when needed, then finish the job on its own.

Does the job as advertised. My entire first floor is 1000 square feet of vinyl plank. This vacuum mapped the entire floor plan after the first cleaning. I can now just say "Hey Google, clean my kitchen" and it goes right to where it needs to and auto docks and empties itself when done.

Smarter and Sucks

This new vac is uplifting. It really sucks. Okay, no more puns. It really is a much-improved vac from iRobot. I'd give it 4.5 stars, but without that option, I lean towards 5 rather than 4.
What is great?
-It is much smarter than previous generations. This model maps your floor and knows where to go and how to get home. It does a better job of vacuuming as it actually cleans in a pattern as you would if you were actually doing the job. It is much better at finding home than most others too.
-The app is intuitive and easy to use. It has all the options you could need for a robot vacuum and many options most people will not use. Once a map is made by the Roomba, you can section off certain areas by labels. For example, you can separate the kitchen from the dining room. This way if you would like, you can have it clean the dining room after a meal through the app or by linking it to Alexa or Google. If you connect it to a voice assistant, you can say, "Hey Google, tell Floorida Man (my Roomba's name) to clean the dining room."
-This is my first robot vac that empties itself after cleanings. So nice to have this option! Now when we are gone for a couple of days, we can keep the vac running, knowing it will empty itself. I usually just turn them off, so they don't get jammed with what it picks up.
What I would improve
-It is smarter but still runs into things like walls from time to time. Our old one is very beat up because it runs into everything. This vac never does any damage when it runs into things, and it does not happen very often, but it happens.
-The fact that it empties itself is fantastic, but I wish it did not use bags to collect everything. It would be nice if the auto-empty feature sent everything into a container that could be emptied into the trash rather than a bag that needs to be thrown away and replaced. iRobot did include four bags, which is nice, but with a dog, two cats, and three long-haired women in the house, we will fill the bags up faster than average.
Overall I am very happy with how much this vac sucks! Sorry, last pun.

I had been looking into robot vacuums for some time now. Having young children and trying to do all the chores and responsibilities that life requires is exhausting. Ever since I got the Roomba, I have had one less thing to worry about and it has had unintended but pleasant consequences. One of these unexpected benefits is that I can now get me kids to tidy up on the premise that if they don’t the robot will eat their toys. It is a win-win for me because everything is cleaner, but I have to do less work. It also has helped my house stay cleaner because it can be set on a schedule to clean certain areas more often than I normally would have time for.
Unboxing: iRobot obviously designed their packaging to be made super simple and easy. It is evident the manufacturer put a lot of thought into it. There were handles to lift the base out of the box and the rest was packaged in boxes so there were no loose components that could be missed during unpacking.
Included in the box was the Roomba, the dirt-disposal and recharging base, two filters, four disposal bags, and one a virtual wall barrier.
Set-up was as quick and easy as simply plugging the base in and placing the Roomba on it, so it begins to charge, it did come some-what charged though. While it charged I downloaded the app, registered the product and connect to Wi-Fi. Once done I made sure the floors were picked-up and the virtual wall barrier was set up in the spot I wanted the Roomba to avoid the most. Since it comes with only one virtual wall barrier and I have several places under furniture I do not want the Roomba to get into, I have to set up physical barriers to prevent it from finding lost objects in the other places but it’s simple enough. This issue is resolved once the Roomba creates a map though, it is easy to select areas that you do not want it to get into.
Mapping kind of blew me away. I knew it had this feature, but it is still phenomenal how well it does its job. The app has a special setting under “Map” that allows it to explore the house without cleaning. It can also map while it cleans, but it is much faster to get started this way. Once that is done, the app allows you to edit the map it made, name the rooms it found and place room borders. It also, as I stated, allows you to section off areas that are a no-go for the Roomba.
App: The app is really intuitive and simple to use. Just click to tell it where and how thoroughly you want it to clean and off it goes. There is also simply graphics and instructions for each of the features.
Carpets: I was skeptical about its ability to really clean carpets like a standing manual vacuum can, but it definitely proved itself. It cleaned just as well and that was with the “only one pass” setting.
Rugs: I only have one rug, a small children’s rug we roll out for the kids as needed, I left it out so the Roomba could clean it and it did so pretty well. The carpet did roll up a few times when the Roomba was on its way elsewhere, but it simply muscled through and kept going.
Floors: Most of my floor is tile and the Roomba does an exceptional job on them. It hugs every wall and corner and gets everything without issue. Even my standard manual vacuum cannot leave tile floor clean!
Cleaning in general: All-in-all, the vacuum cleans remarkably well and does a thorough job. If it detects excess dirt in an area, it will actually go back and pass through again and again until it senses it has been cleaned.
Dirt disposal and charging: Whenever the Roomba’s waste bin fills up while cleaning, it will return home to relieve itself and then return to completes its job. Once its job is done, it goes back, empties out, and recharges. I had one instance where it could not charge because it got too much dirt on its charging connecting metal, it sent me an alert on the phone and the base blinked red until I cleaned it using the recommended method.
I kind of feel like I have a baby in the house with the Roomba, all small objects and cords have to be off the floor to prevent Roomba from getting into trouble. If it does though, it is not normally a big deal. I was pretty meticulous about picking up, but it still managed to find a lost crayon from somewhere. It simply went back home and told me through the app that it had an issue. I went to pull the crayon out and relieve it of hair it had wound up on its brush and it was back to doing its job.
It’s very easy to clean, the rollers underneath come off for easy cleaning and to remove any object that may get lodged. Many components are removable, cleanable, and replaceable as they accumulate dirt and wear down.
Overall, I am impressed and blown away by the possibilities of technology. Not only is this an autonomous machine, it vacuums with incredible power and even cleans itself. This brand really stands out from the rest because it is evident that quality and customer-minded thought goes into their products and I am more than glad to have a new robot helper in my home.

I hate vacuuming and I also hate how my floors look after a day of not vacuuming. It’s amazing how much dirt and dust just appears. I have a cordless stick vacuum that works just fine as long as I find the time to actually use it, so when I had the chance to get the iRobot Roomba i8+, I jumped at the opportunity to simplify this part of the cleaning routine.
Set up for the Roomba is super simple and of course there’s an app to help. You start by finding a place to set the charging / automatic dirt disposal station in a spot that has some clearance for the Roomba to get into and out of. After plugging in the base, you place Roomba on and it wakes up. The rest of the set up takes place in the iRobot HOME app; this includes things like connecting Roomba to your WiFi at first. You might want to avoid running a vaccum session right out of box, as Roomba will probably not have enough of a charge to complete a session. My device was only at 20% charge and it quickly had to return to its base for more juice.
Once you’re all set up and charged, you can use the app to remotely start Roomba up, or you can press the button in the center of the top and it will get started. The first session will take longer as Roomba creates a map of the area it’s trying to clean. Once it learns your particular layout, Roomba zooms thru the areas, efficiently cleaning your floors. When it’s complete (or full, you know sometimes the floor is really dirty), Roomba returns to its base, empties the dirt into the bin, and charges for the next time. The bin and its dirt disposal bags can hold up to 60 days of dirt, dust, & hair. There’s no excuse for not having a clean floor with this system. The system ships with a couple of extra filters and dust bags for the bin so it will be a little bit before you have to start paying for replacements, the one real drawback of the Roomba, expensive replacement parts.
The app starts to provide more info as you use Roomba more and more, like giving you a detailed map and allowing you to define rooms, and giving you status/health updates on the machine (like recommending when to switch filters). You can set up schedules to fully automate your vacuuming routine, or just run Roomba ad hoc from anywhere using the app and/or the smart voice assistant of your choice.
While the Roomba i8+ is an expensive system, that part of it isn’t much different than any other higher end vacuums from brands like Dyson or Samsung. If you’re in the market for a vacuum at this end of the spectrum, you can’t go wrong with the Roomba. It offers a super convenient cleaning solution that allows you to do whatever it is you need to do while also taking care of cleaning the floors. One time use dust bags and filters are a drag, it would be nice if reusable options were made available, but that is not a showstopper. Overall the Roomba i8+ is a good system that does a good job at what it was made for, keeping your floors clean in the background while you do whatever you need to do!

This Roomba replaced a 5 year old robot vacuum and wow they’ve come a long way! First off it was beyond easy to setup. Literally unpack the box (all preassembled) and set the base/bin against a wall or in a corner where you want it, plug in, and put the vacuum on the base charger. Then download the app and you are ready to vacuum. (You can even skip this and just tap the clean button and start vacuuming, but the app is sooo worth setting up).
So what can you do with the app? Lots!
The mapping feature is great. It took about an hour to map our main living floor of living room, dining room, kitchen, office, and a bathroom (about 1250 sq. ft.) Once it was done it put itself back in its dock and let me know it was done. Now for some of the cool stuff – once you have it mapped you can use the visual map to quickly set “don’t touch” areas (excellent for the dog and cat bowl) and I also set it to only go halfway under 2 pieces of furniture and the couch so that it stays away from lots of plugs and cables, etc. You can also easily move the room demarcation lines around to segment off rooms and then name the rooms so that you can tell it just to vacuum one room or if you have a few rooms with high traffic (LR, DR, Kitchen in our house) and set them as a group as a favorite. It linked / paired easily with our Google home – “Hey Google vacuum the living room” and off it goes.
The app was very simple to use and it walks you through everything. I did the room config, favorites, the don’t vacuum areas etc. all in about 10 mins.
Then just set it to clean when you want via schedule frequency for it to just do your favorites say every other day and then full clean once or twice a week, etc.
Roomba has been doing this for quite a while, so no issues with it handling not falling off stairs, avoiding obstacles, etc.
So far it has only got stuck once between an area rug and the couch at just the right angle, but it pinged me in the app and said it was stuck in the living room.
Cleaning is working well, picks up both our thicker dog hair and thinner cat hair on hardwoods and low pile area rugs with ease. I like the self emptying feature so you can set and forget for a while, but a con here is “now that you’ve got the printer, you need to regularly buy the ink cartridges” aka the vacuum bin bags. We’ll see over time how that adds up.
All in all though impressed with the app features and ease of use and like this next gen robot vacuum.

I’ve always wanted a iRobot Roomba for our home as we have a lot of wood floors and thin carpets. This iRobot Roomba i8+ 8550 meets a lot of our needs and then some, especially with the Wi-Fi ability on this. I was very impressed at the features this Roomba has and was looking forward to getting this et up and ready to use.
Initial set up was pretty simple. Once the app was downloaded, following the set up with your home Wi-Fi was effortless. The app gives you the ability to control and start up a clean. What sets this apart from others is that it maps out your home and remembers the layout. It begins to clean areas that have not been covered and so ensures every part has been touched. And as it is connected to your home Wi-Fi, I was able to set it up with my Google Home and can have it do voice command.
In the box comes three extra dirt bags. I was trying to figure out if I need to install one of them. That’s when I discovered that the Roomba i8+ automatically empties itself after 60 days of cleaning. This is a great feature, after 2 weeks of working my floors I’m about 1/3 the way to having to have it emptied. The vacuum power of this is pretty good. There is a floor brush that circles around to sweep debris for the suction to take it. Even on carpet I was impressed with how it effortlessly cleaned around. There is also a transmitter box that you can set up in an area of the house for the Roomba i8+ to go around and not touch. Like the photo in the included instructions, I placed it near our doggo’s dinner area. Battery wise, after two full cleans of our 400 sq feet first floor, the Roomba i8+ required charging which the app informed me. Watching it go back to the station was pretty neat, as you see it slowly set up and align itself.
Overall, I am very pleased at how well this gets the dirt and connects to our home Wi-Fi is such an added bonus. Definitely worth the investment for smart home cleaning.

I’ve always been a fan of the iRobot Roomba line since the original Discovery model I bought for my Parents back in 2004. For the record, that Roomba is still chugging away at my neighbor’s house with only a battery replacement to keep it going! The build quality is excellent, and they are essentially little tanks.
But iRobot has come a long way from Discovery, which navigated randomly by slamming up against things. The i8+ is the pinnacle of all of the lessons learned by iRobot in mapping and intelligence algorithms. Gone is the random ambling around, replaced by more efficient patterns and movements. The i8 moves with a purpose now – even more than my i3 did – and seems to clean my rooms much faster and more precisely. The increased suction helps it pick up even more than its predecessors and improved sensors spot areas where it needs to do a second pass. I also noted that transitions and thresholds between rooms that my old i3 used to struggle a bit with are no issue at all to the i8.
Setup was quick and easy, and the first thing I did was to send the i8 on a mapping run. While it did well, the first run missed a room, so I had to send it out again. I turned on the lights in the area where the room was (as well as the room itself) and it merged perfectly into the first map. Mapping has improved greatly and editing the map to define my rooms was pretty straightforward. The coolest addition for me was the ability within rooms to define areas where you want the robot to either avoid entirely (like pet beds or areas where there are a lot of wires) or areas where you want to be able to send the robot for a quick clean. For instance, if you eat in front of the TV you can set that area as a special section on the map and then call the robot to quick clean only that area instead of the whole room. This brings a lot of flexibility, especially if you want to do a quick ‘once over’ before visitors arrive.
The addition of the Clean Base was the one thing I wasn’t sure about; it seemed kind of a laziness thing since emptying the robot’s bin isn’t really a big deal for me. But I’ve come to really love it and I can see how it fits into a busier family’s schedule, making vacuuming a more or less schedule it and forget it for weeks at a time.
As a package, it’s hard to beat the i8's value. Not only do you get the robot and clean base, but iRobot includes 2 extra filters and 4 dirt disposal bags (This is above and beyond the filter and bag that are already installed!) so you won’t have to buy consumables for a while. It also includes a Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barrier for those with open floor plans that include stairs. I remember when this was an additional purchase! Solid integration with both Alexa and Google Assistant makes cleaning as easy as asking a question. And you can tell the i8 to clean a specific area or your entire house in minutes.
It may be a little more expensive than some of the ‘import’ brands, but the longevity and quality of the results are WELL worth it in my opinion. I highly recommend this model specifically as well as iRobot and the Roomba brand in general. You will not be disappointed!

The unboxing was annoying, there was SO much cardboard to break down. I've included a photo of just how much is in this one little box.
App was simple to download and make an account for, unfortunately it immediately wanted to do a "dry run" to map the house - just mapping, no vacuuming. When my son moved out, I started redoing the house. No way it would be even remotely successful. I had cleaning to do first so it could get everywhere.
That weekend I found in the app where to have it build a map without vacuuming. I have a ranch house, about 1500 square feet. Standard layout, 3 bedrooms, great room / dining room, all the rest.
Mapping seemed to go OK. They say it can take four or five runs to build the map. Then it takes time to upload it while it sits in the charger. Took an hour and ten minutes for that initial mapping run, but it seemed to build a pretty accurate map of the house.
I've been using robot vacs since their inception, and have had probably four or five brands over the years. This is the first one that didn't bump into everything nonstop as it was mapping, other than irregular floor areas and trying to get tight around legs of tables and chairs. It would roll along, stop just a fraction of an inch from the wall, turn, and continue. I like the intelligence it depicts using sensors rather than ONLY the bumper that they all used to use to know when to stop and change direction.
Oddly, while mapping and not vacuuming it DID have the little spinning brush on the one front side going. I assume it's tied to the drivetrain and it can't roll without it spinning.
No issues with threshhold transitions between hardwood floor and carpeting as far as movement goes, but those DO show a weakness when vacuuming since things tend to collect there.
Once the mapping is done, the app lets you edit the map. You can name rooms, and change borders that separate areas. Those default borders were pretty accurate except for the hallway / laundry room / second bathroom since it seemed to think it was one weird shaped room. I added borders and tweaked a few others, got rooms named. Now it was time to clean.
You can specify a room, an area, but for the first run I wanted a whole house cleaning. I don't often get under the beds, no pets, they don't get that messy. So this should find some things to clean.
The app tells you what area it is cleaning at the present time by room name.
When you send it to clean, you can also tell it to just go over things once, or to go over them a second time as well for a more thorough cleaning.
I don't like bags. The fact that the cleaning station requires bags is an annoyance factor to me. I wish there was an OPTION - to let it vacuum and use the cleaning / charging station to empty if it needs to (such as when you're not home) or to have it return for charging but to call you to empty the bin manually, if you ARE home. That would make the annoying bags last longer. Would have been nice if they made the emptying station a bagless solution as well.
My floors are generally clean - I have a big Dyson cinetic ball vac, and a new Dyson outsize + cordless vac. But now that my son moved out and it's just me, I don't need to vacuum as much as I don't make the messes he did. So the robot will be a great alternative. It will also be an incentive for me to keep junk from accumulating on the floors in the various rooms. And with the scheduler option, it'll be easy to get it to clean some rooms one day, the other rooms the next day, and never have to pause to charge in the middle of a cleaning since I can just do sections alternating.
Noise levels are minimal even when it's in the room. The vacuum itself adds little noise and doesn't sound much louder than it did when it was mapping only.
My first cleaning run it had to go back to the base after doing the second bedroom, hallway, and kitchen. The app showed half a battery or so left when it returned to base. From what I can see, it doesn't look like the emptying bag has inflated at all yet, so I don't think it did the emptying. All it told me was "Saving Smart Map." I guess it updates the map after every run, just to keep it current and accurate, which is good. But it went back after doing not even half the house after being told to vacuum everything, and half the battery was still left. It never continued that cleaning run.
In case the app wasn't updating, I closed the app, then opened it. And had it tell me it couldn't connect, then it told me it needed rebooting. It assures you that you won't lose the cleaning data or the map. But it nagged that it still can't connect and I had to make sure it was correctly positioned in the charging station. It was. It was powered. So I unplugged the unit from the wall, plugged it back in, same, unplugged again, replugged again, this time I got a nag that I have to empty the bin. I thought this was supposed to empty itself in the charging station? I hit the button to empty the bin in the app, and yeah, THAT certainly makes noise. It finished, and I got another nag that the bin may be full, please empty. So I tried again. We'll see.
But it didn't go on to contine with the other FIVE ROOMS it never bothered with when it was told to vacuum everywhere. So I let it sit for a while to get fully charged, then tried again.
This time it at least started doing other rooms as well. But the vacuum isn't very powerful - apparently it relies mostly on the rubbery bars to clean the floor since I had many places with small items, like a tiny bit of paper and similar things, left behind that regular vacuums don't leave on the floor after they've passed. These are things that weren't embedded in the fiber. I have a very easy carpet for vacuums, not deep pile or anything.
After the initial fail, it did, on a subsequent "vacuum everything" command, actually get the great room. It wandered back to the base, this time it actually emptied itself out and then returned to the great room to keep going. But I told it to go over everything once - and it's vacuuming parts of the great room three times, and totally missing big parts of the biggest open part of the great room. Still hasn't vacuumed the master bedroom even ONCE in the three times it's been told to vacuum all, and only the third time did it actaully vacuum the dining room. And it's bouncing off things using the bumper now far more vacuuming than when it only mapped. While mapping it looked intelligent - while vacuuming, it looked inebriated. I am frustrated with it wasting time vacuuming the same spots repeatedly and then totally missing the open area that I really WANT it to vacuum.
I like that I can have multiple schedules although I wish I could give them names. But this way I can have it do three days a week half the house, three days a week the other half of the house, and it'll never run out of juice during one of its jobs.
My results overall are mixed though. Granted, I can't compare the results to the Dysons since they are two completely different types of machines. But for the price I expected better results here. The noise levels are fine, it but it never seems to vacuum the whole area you tell it to. Battery isn't too bad - it can't finish my 1500 square foot home without recharging, but it runs a bit over an hour before it has to go back and charge. Compare that to the discovery only mode, it went over an hour and had just used about half the battery. But schedules help make that not a big issue.
The third time it finally ran out of juice (battery was showing a red sliver in the app) and THAT time it says it's recharging and would continue in 1 hour and 19 minutes. It finally had popped back off, went to vacuum - and immediately turned around and went to empty - if it was that full why didn't it empty while it sat there charging? Then it said "returning to base" and I wondered why, AGAIN, it refused to vacuum the master bedroom. I see an error in the history, "Vacuuming cancelled. Low Memory." But it eventually did get back to the master bedroom. Even there, small tiny bits of thread left behind, a bit of hair near the bathroom threshold. There's always something it doesn't get. And these are small, lightweight items that OUGHT to get picked up so easily. They weren't embedded, they were simply laying right there on the surface.
Hopefully it will start doing better when it only does half a house each time. I'll maybe try having it go over things twice in small batches. The "Vacuum Everything" option has been a disappointment so far. And hopefully they can update something and make it pay a bit more attention around the transitions from carpet to hardwood floor - that is where it always left stuff. My Neato had an option for a turbo vacuum settings - I think this should've had something similar. Lower run time, fine, but if I'm doing smaller areas in shifts, I don't need the full runtime to try to do as much of the house as I can. I'd rather have two or three schedules and have it actually CLEAN better. I don't like finding tiny bits of paper from a notebook, tiny little rocks that ought to have easily been picked up on the runner in the laundry room, even tiny bits of thread left behind after it's gone over it two or three times.
