Hasn't worked yet with and Win 11 or 10 laptop at work. iPhone and androids connect perfectly. J5 support is terrible - never got through on phone calls over multiple weeks, Emailed their support team on March 14 and they responded on March 29th...unfortunately too late to return due to Best Buy 15 day return policy. They have been responding to emails about once a week, even though I email them back immediately

Nice product, but has problems with some apps

I decided to test this product because I have an older TV in my office that doesn't support casting. The USB cable that supplies power was a bit too short to reach the USB connector on my TV, after I connected the unit into the only free HDMI port, so I had to use an extra AC adapter I had laying around to plug it into a wall outlet. Other than that, the J5Create ScreenCast was fairly simple to set up, although connecting to the device's admin gateway was simple enough, I could see it being awkward for some. Once the device was set up and connected to my router, it was again fairly simple to cast/mirror various devices. I use 'fairly simple' because not all of the apps on my android phones can cast to the device... they simple don't see it as an option. For instance, YouTube see the device as a cast option without fail, but Rumble and HBOMax never see the device as a cast option, which is odd since I cast to other TVs with either app. I can mirror the phones and view content via those apps, but that's a bit of overkill if all I want to do is cast content. I haven't had time to contact support about that issue, but I will even though I'm sure I'll be told the issue is with the apps. I've also mirrored several Windows laptops without any serious issues, although I did get a warning on several occasions that the connection was unstable; the connection was never interrupted and I didn't really see any degradation in quality. Overall, I'm pleased with this product, but the inability to simply cast from certain well-known apps is a bit of a let down. Hopefully a call to support will rectify that.

    A magical little must-have device

Have you ever wanted to share your latest vacation video and pictures on a larger screen, be it a TV or a projector without lugging all your cables and equipment and also be able to share from your PC, and your mobile phone? Do you need an external wireless display to showcase your wares? Have I got the device for you that you MUST own! Presenting the 4k Wireless HDMI display adaptor. This magical device uses Miracast / Airplay / Chromecast / screencast technology to display “HDMI over Wi-Fi”. So how does it work? Well, in simplified terms, it uses a piece of technology that is called “Wi-Fi Direct” that allows you to send video and audio (although compressed due to bandwidth) via a secured connection. It allows you to send a copy of your video and audio mirrored (hence “Miracast”) over the wireless connection to your display device. Miracast, which honestly has been around since 2012 or so was initially thought of as a gimmick. Now, this technology has matured to a point it's almost universally supported. It's amazing how far this technology has come around. Previously, my “casting” experience generally included initiating YouTube videos from a mobile device. Never has this casting experience included full video transmission from a mobile device. This technology is amazing with so many uses. You can now mirror your screen from Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS. Depending on what you are using to connect, the method may vary, but the end result is the same. Android and Windows PC would be the easiest. Upon connecting the dongle to your HDMI and providing power by USB, the device turns on. Turn your display to the corresponding display HDMI port and there are instructions on how to access it. Natively the device sits at 192.168.203.1, which you may connect to after you sign on to the device's Wi-Fi by using the instructions on the display screen (which includes the SSID Wi-Fi name and password). I noted it required a firmware update after connecting to my home Wi-Fi, which I initiated. The SSID / password combination is only needed on MacOS and iOS devices, Windows and Android can cast without being directly connected to the device Wi-Fi network. However, once you have connected its a matter of just initiating the screencast option on your device, once again the instructions are on your screen. Couldn't be easier. So how well does it work? Very well infact. Its almost magical. I was able to load up videos from my phone and laptop and send it straight the large screen in the living room. When I first got it, I hooked it up to the monitor on my dining table, but I quickly moved it to my TV as I realized this technologies potential. In my testing and corresponding abundance of amusement for this device, looking at all the possibilities for this technology, It seems, there are limitations. You cannot cast DRM limited programs, so no casting Netflix shows via your phone, but it is possible to do so via the computer it seems. The casting experience works flawlessly with an Android or a PC, as it feels native. The MacOS and iOS experience was a bit more challenging, and took some time to get setup. But once it did, it works rather well. Overall, the experience with this device was highly positive. I loved the fact that I am able to quickly send video & audio to a device. Although the video and audio quality is compressed, and colours may not be as vibrant, it still works very well and totally usable for everyday use. The only downside for me is the range of the Wi-Fi connection, I was only able to push 20-25 feet from the display device before the signal degraded and the quality suffers. However, your situation may be different.

I love that this just works, at least with most phones. There is another way with QR codes and connecting to the wi-Fi directly if your phone (such as the Duo 2 isn’t compatible) but that isn’t nearly as convenient. On my Samsung phone I just it the SmartView button on the drop-down menu and I was able to cast my screen. With my windows laptop I was able use it to set up the projector as a secondary monitor. The image looks great on the screen (4k TV, gaming monitor, 1080p projector, etc.) and the connection is fast, on my phone I was able to pause the casting to the TV and it immediately started the movie on my phone with zero hiccup; then switching back was just as smooth. Additionally, the sound switched back and forth without an issue as well. It needs additional power via USB and the USB port on the back of the TV worked for me which is convenient. Overall, I see this as the perfect travel companion, I don’t have to connect to the local Wi-Fi with it to get streaming to work, I just plug it in and start using it. This is going in my tech bag that goes to work and on vacation with me.

The best part about this mirroring device is its compatibility with both Android and iOS operating systems (in addition to Windows and MacOS). I needed a device to plug into my portable projector that would allow for my Android phone and my wife’s iPhone to connect and stream content wirelessly. The projector had Miracast built in, which allowed for an Android device to connect, but the projector was not compatible with iPhones or iPads. The j5 Create makes it easier to connect multiple devices to our projector. Depending on the device, there are different instructions provided to aid in the initial setup. As soon as you plug in the j5 Create’s dongle, you are presented with a useful diagram containing instructions with the different connection methods (see picture). I highly recommend making your initial connection by connecting directly to the devices SSID and using its webpage (server) to search for and join your local network. This will allow you to update the firmware right from the start. Afterwards, you’re free to connect any device to begin streaming or mirroring content either from saved files (photos/videos) or from an internet connection. It is true that it’s a simpler process to connect an Android phone, especially if there isn’t a local wireless network to join, like in a hotel. But the j5 Create is just as capable of connecting to an iPhone, albeit with a couple more steps. And here’s a trick that’s not mentioned in the instruction manual. If your iPhone can create its own hotspot, you can log into the j5’s web server and establish a connection between the j5 and the hotspot. Once the connection is established, you can begin mirroring your iPhone while using the phones cellular date/internet connection to both stream and mirror content at the same time. Normally, the ability to stream from the internet and mirror to the j5 device is accomplished by connecting the j5 to your local network. But if a local network isn’t available, again, like in a hotel room, you can use this method to maintain internet access while mirroring content. Otherwise, without the hotspot option, you will only be able to mirror saved files or videos on your iPhone to the j5 Create device (if a local network is not available). As far as stability and connection speed, I did not experience any issues here. Even when streaming 4K, the device did not stutter or buffer. Overall, I am really happy with the versatility and connection options provided by this little piece of technology.

I remember when I had a camcorder that I wanted to playback on a TV, and you would have to have all the correct RCA cables to make it happen. Trickle up a few years and then to connect a laptop or phone you needed to have the right adapter. Trickle a few more years and now you just need to have a TV that has a cast or mirror feature but even still most of those have limits to what will actually connect. As in my current case, I have a fairly new 4K TV that does have cast, but I cannot connect my laptop or my IOS devices to it. Well, that is no more with the j5create ScreenCast 4k HDMI wireless display. My mind went into overload with usage ideas once I was able to figure out how to make it work. Figuring out how to make it work, did take me over thirty-minutes with a bunch of trial and error. I cannot honestly tell you what I did to make it finally connect or become recognizable. Here are some of the steps though, so hopefully they help you get yours up and going. I first plugged the HDMI into my HDMI port. Then I plugged the USB in the TV's available USB port. I think this was the magic sauce so do this if your TV has the open port for you to use. Then I reset my Wi-Fi and then cycled the j5create screencast. Using my laptop, I connected to the j5create and was finally able to get HTTP://192.168.203.1 to load. After getting it to load I downloaded the firmware update, and everything worked very well after that. I move the device between two different TVs and was able to connect with IOS phones, Windows computers, and Android phones. For anyone already familiar with screen mirroring and or casting this is the exact same deal. most of the time if you have your phone up it will not mimic your screen rotation. With your laptop, it more replicates an external monitor and will go wide screen for your display. When I thought about how cool this little device is and the available uses, I could use it for, I really got excited. The first, would be travel. I recently got back from Aurora, CO and whereas the room was genuinely nice the TV was a bit basic and most nights I watched Netflix on my laptop. I absolutely plan on just taking the j5create from now on. One thing worth noting is that I have not been able to cast Netflix or Disney+ from a mobile device’s application, I have only been able to stream to the j5create using a laptop and browser. From what I have read, it is a block they have. I am still working on it as it might just be user error. My next idea for use would be for my sales office presentations. I have a couple of projectors that I use for presentations, but this will come in handy when a blank wall is not available but maybe a TV is. Finally, for the holidays when the family is over, and you want to show your mom that funny video of your kids from this past summer's vacation on your phone. Now you just can share it with everyone at one time. The practical uses, the sleek design, and the ability to allow a wide variety of different devices to stream on a big screen, makes this product a home run anyone. Highly recommend to anyone but do recommend a tech savvy person to set it up for the first time.

Setup: was pretty simple. Just inserted in empty HDMI port and connected to free usb port on tv. Then I had to connect to the SSID:Screencast that was on the screen. I went to the IP address provided and entered my home wireless settings. Then I connected my laptop to my home network. Use: I had to go into settings and select wireless display to get the screen cast to connect. Then everything worked just like a second monitor except I can sit at the couch and stream without wires. This is awesome since I can get work done while having my email or a video playing on the tv. Cons: The setup was not as user friendly as I initially thought but worked reliably. Wish there was more QR codes to automate the setup for less tech savy users. I would definetly recommend this if you do not already have a Google/Apple way to stream or if you want to stream from a Windows device.

Overall this does what you want - casts your pc or mobile device to a monitor or TV wirelessly. Getting it set up to do so is straightforward, but ensuring it stays connected has been an exercise in futility. I use it for my work, extending the screen of my laptop to my (brand new) monitor. I can't be any closer to the device, as everything is on the same desk, and yet periodically throughout the day it will suddenly lose the connection. When it does I get a green screen, where I then have to unplug the device, plug it back in, and reconnect. If you don't mind periodic frustrations like that, then this is right up your alley, but for $80 I was expecting better.

The j5create ScreenCast 4K works shockingly well. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from it, since most of my experience with Miracast has been what's been built into TVs, and those experiences haven't been great. But the ScreenCast has been really quite good. Once setup, PC's have no issues finding the ScreenCast and mirroring to it. Latency is typically good, but I've run into a coupe of glitches here and there, but nothing major. The ScreenCast also supports Apple's AirPlay, and while it also works quite well, it isn't as convenient as what an Apple TV can provide. The biggest stumbling block is that with an Apple TV, if setup properly, any Apple device in range can stream to it without having to be on the same WiFi network. With the ScreenCast, an Apple device must either be on the same WiFi network as the ScreenCast, or connected directly to the ScreenCast's WiFi network in order to stream to it (PC's can stream to it without having to be on the same WiFi network). This isn't a deal breaker by any means, and for the vast majority of people it probably doesn't matter, but just something to be aware of. Finally, it also supports Google Cast, and it works just as well as any other Google Cast device - which is to say not great. Casting a browser tab or a Youtube video works just fine, but mirroring the entire screen of a computer is not great. It's good in a pinch, if the computer you're using doesn't support Miracast or AirPlay, but otherwise it's not even worth turning that capability on (and it's telling, that out of the box, Google Cast isn't even enabled).

Thought this was a perfect solution. After all, when you have a perfectly fine 60" Panasonic plasma set, that does everything you want except not "smart" enough to function with mirroring, why wouldn't you go for it? We have five flat screens, and two of them are somewhat smart. Unfortunately, the set in our tv room is not. If we want to stream a show from MacBook or iPhone, it is necessary to uncoil the cable and, well, you know the rest. So, for 80 bucks, why not? Installation was okay, although the instructions on screen & written need some clarafication and on line bot not so hot, so phone call was made. After a long wait, I got a polite fellow who walked me through the job. Seemed to be okay, and initial test worked fine, but there are problems. First, signal seems poor at times, with mirror disconnecting multi times during show. Second, streaming services like Peacock & Paramount+ don't work with the device. Sound but no picture! This is a problem with these greedy streaming services, who must think you are going to mirror or screencast to an entire auditorium.
