Kangaroo - Smart Wi-Fi Video Doorbell with Chime Kangaroo’s Video Doorbell offers a remarkably flexible solution for renters, apartment dwellers or homeowners. I liked being able to have it up-and-running in just over a half-hour, with a temporary install, battery-operated, and with a full suite of desirable features. I especially like knowing I can make it permanent, provide a permanent power source using the existing doorbell wiring, and even add it to a fully monitored security system if I choose, sometime later. Hard to find anything to complain about, but let’s take a closer look. INSTALL: Kangaroo provides a very readable fold-out brochure that orients you around the camera and pushes you onto the right path to get this video doorbell installed. Download the App. Follow the step-by-step instructions that someone at Kangaroo accurately aligned with the hardware’s install activity. (If you think that’s how installation always is, you don’t setup much technology.) Kangaroo gives you 2 pathways, battery operated, or wired into your existing home bell wiring. I’m starting with battery, but that doesn’t prevent me from changing my mind later. You’re led through the WiFi connection for the video doorbell, and later an even simpler connection of the indoor chime. My first effort failed to connect, but I was then cycled back around to the connection initiation, which now worked perfectly. Nothing was wrong. Just needed a second effort. PERFORMANCE: Annoying stuff first. Kangaroo would love you to sign up for their cloud storage and monitoring and it’s very low priced. Good for them. However, the screens for signup are an initial obstacle course that might leave you feeling there is no way around it. You’ll need to select BASIC operation if you don’t want a subscription. All the features I’ll discuss are available; no subscription required. Confusing stuff next. I got wonderful responsiveness from both the video feed and separate chime. The delay seemed to be measured in10ths of a second. But, occasionally I got awful responsiveness from the video feed, with the delay measured in many seconds. Odd. I attribute it to my doorbell sometimes connecting to a distant WiFi node. This may be unique to my setup. Good responses far outnumbered poor. A great set of useful and very usable features. With either battery or hard-wired installation, an On-demand livestream is available. WIRED, it is apparently available for full time viewing. If you are depending on a battery operation. the live stream will warn you and then quit after a limited period. Motion and sound detection are sent via notification that I can adjust or stop in the App. The picture is in full color most times, with color night vision, until the light is too low, but a detailed B&W image continues until sufficient light returns. . Two way talk is enabled in the App. A Chime is provided that can be plugged into a USB outlet or power supply. We have ours located 20 feet away, but closer to our living space. It receives a WiFi signal originating from the doorbell. It chimes in both the room and on my phone. SUMMARY: This is a very nicely priced video doorbell, loaded with useful features, totally flexible, and easy to set up. For those of us who hate subscriptions, we can still get a great security device. I would prefer the subscription promotion be more subtle. The Kangaroo will capture pictures of a visitor. We can initiate a capture of videos or still pictures from the doorbell. In the absence of a subscription, videos or pictures are saved for only 24 hours. But, like noted earlier, you can alway download to your camera roll. I’m impressed with how much technology I can have at me doorway for a modest price. Recommended.

Easy to Setup, Paid Plans Offer Insurance

TLDR: Easy to setup and install. 2.4Ghz WiFi but works on MESH networks. image and audio quality is great (night is very impressive). External chime design a little bulky. Works without subscription but subscription plan ads features + insurance. Which is a nice touch. I wasn't familiar with the Kangaroo brand of security products when I got this, so had no expectations - it's not as known as some the other brands out there. In the box you get the: - Kangaroo Video Door Bell (with 3M Mounting Tape) - USB A Wall Plug - External USB Chime (plugs into the above wall plug) - Micro USB Cable - Mounting Screw - AC line-in adapters so you can connect the camera to power (but it's rechargeable via micro USB) Setup was easy. There is a big yellow warning label telling you not to remove the battery tab until you have the app setup and installed. For once, I followed directions and installed the app first. The Kangaroo app asks for a LOT of information on registration, name, address, phone number, etc. I found this a little invasive. This is so (on premium plans) they can notify law enforcement etc of issues. I wish they didn't ask for so much up front. But after registration, you can the QR code on screen with the camera and it pairs, the 'Chime' extension pairs separately. Everything uses 2.4Ghz WiFi and I had no issues with my Google Mesh WiFi setup. Video quality is very good (1080p). I tested using 5G away from home (so no WiFi on my phone) and quality was clean and audio responsive. Night tests were very impressive, the video stream goes to black and white/gray. I didn't try the Alexa/Google Home integration, but Kangaroo offers that as a feature. The Camera unit is compact, looks nice, and feels well built. What is odd is the Chime is rather bulky and sticks out. I kind of get why, as the power adapter for the Chime is dual use (you can charge the camera). But it makes it ugly on a wall (see photo) and I can't help but think there has to be a better way. On charging, the camera is battery powered, but not sure how long it lasts. Kangaroo should not this somewhere on the packaging. The rechargeable battery may be user replaceable as I did unscrew everything to check inside. It's impossible to review the Kangaroo Doorbell Video camera without also talking about the app. Aside from all the personal details it captures during setup, it's not a bad app. There are premium features you can unlock (30 day cloud video storage) and SMS alerts for an added subscription fee - starting at about $25 a year. This is very common for most cameras, but a nice touch of Kangaroo is the fee also includes insurance for package theft, etc. I can't comment on the insurance, just letting anyone else know.

The Kangaroo Smart Wi-Fi video doorbell with chime in black is a good doorbell camera for the money but has a small draw back that gives it one less star on the rating. The ease of the doorbell installation is fast and simple, all step by step on the app, takes less than 5 minutes total with creating your account. Install is simple on the wall of your choice either using the 3M heavy duty sticky pad on the holder or even more secure with the screws. There is also a safety screw making it difficult to steal if someone was trying to, you will see them struggling and most likely catch who did it. The camera is a welcome quality for the price range, crisp and clear video and a great field of view. I used this for my backdoor camera faced at my garage for deliveries coming during the day if I am in my office. The speed of notification delivery is about 4 seconds and the video lag is less than 2 seconds, I am very happy with that, it competes with my Nest Camera up front on speed. The included doorbell plugs into either the included charging and/or power block directly or like I did, a USB power bank that I use by my desk so I can hear the doorbell being pressed. The charging of the doorbell is quick, only takes a few hours and it is good to go. I cannot comment on how long the battery lasts but it seems about 2% a day on average unless there is more movement. The reason for the missing 1 star is you have to pay for Google Home integration. I have many other devices and this is not charged for on other brands, I am not impressed I would have to pay for this when this is the only camera or device I would. The rest of the features are not needed, I would rather pay $10 more for the device to just have the Google Home integration for life of the device, this would make it 5 stars and a top tier product. Pros: Easy Setup App works great on newer Android devices Quick notifications Small Form Factor Looks Great Comes with Doorbell Camera Quality Sound Quality Battery Cons: No Free Google Integration Must pay more to open standard features of others close in the price range Ads in the setup for insurance company savings Overall, the Kangaroo Kangaroo smart Wi-Fi video doorbell is a quality product with an easy setup and easy to use app, just needs Google integration built in. I cannot comment on Apple use or integration as we do not use much Apple products in our home.

We live in a very quiet townhome neighborhood, usually nothing really goes on around here. But we do have a lot packages coming to our home and have heard neighbors having issues with package thrives. Since we are limited in having cameras set up on the outside of our house due to specific HOA rules, we were allowed to get a camera doorbell device. So, we picked up this Video Doorbell from Kangaroo. I was eager to install it and test it. This was very easy to set up. Charging it up requires plugging it with the Micro usb charger. You have to download the app first and then you set it up via the app. This took about 10 minutes, connecting it to the wifi. There is also a video on the app that instructs you on how to set up the device. As my first time, I found this video to be very helpful. I was surprised to find now way to connect this to a power source when you install it, as the device has a rechargeable battery that lasts you an entire year before the need to recharge. You remove the old doorbell and install the backplate first. Then you slide in the actual camera doorbell while connecting the wires to the back. This automatically caused a chime in our home, and voilà: it’s ready to use. I didn’t remove the adhesive on the back because it comes with two screws to screw into the wall, and a separate screw at the bottom to connect it to the backplate for further security. Seeing the quality video feeds on the app was stunning. It records on 1080p quality, has night vision up to 9ft away, and the motion detector works up to 15ft. My neighbor was clearly seen on this live feed. Choose to live stream or view recorded video to see what your camera sees from anywhere. There is also a Two way talk do that you can speak to anyone outside. Included also is a Chime that plugs in and delivers an audible sound for when the doorbell is pressed. I had no issues with this so far and an thoroughly enjoying this, and at an affordable price, this is a great bargain for home security.

A decent video doorbell, but can be laggy...

The Kangaroo Smart Wi-fi Video Doorbell is the newest generation of doorbell from Kangaroo. Past versions took simple still photos and did not allow for voice (very basic), but this one act as many video doorbells do, recording clips, allowing live video, and also voice back and forth with whoever rings the bell. It’s battery operated but can also be hooked up to existing doorbell wiring for power should your home have it. Wires and screws for these connections are included, as is a micro USB charging cable and plug (unfortunately, it’s not the more modern USB-C type). A thin bracket has 3M tape on it so you can stick it anywhere, or, screw it into a door if you prefer a more permanent mount, and the doorbell simply slides down into the bracket. It resembles many other similar video doorbells and the doorbell button is pronounced and easy to see and know where it is. You need to sign up for a Kangaroo Security account via their app (Apple or Android) first. It’s pretty straight forward, though I’m not quite sure why they needed my full birthdate (?) as part of the information to get going, though. The doorbell and included indoor “chime” which also rings when someone presses the doorbell connect to your phone via Wi-fi (2.4 GHz only, unfortunately) and Bluetooth for setup, and oddly, no password is required during setup as well – it seems to work off of your phone and Wi-fi directly. Once everything is properly paired, you are ready to use the doorbell. A subscription is not absolutely needed to use it, but options are limited. You can record video clips up to 12 seconds max, and have your videos stored in the cloud for 24 hours for free; opt for the under $30 per year plan, and you can have longer videos, and have them stored for up to 30 days as well as gain the ability for the motion sensing to distinguish between humans and anything else… no subscription and if you leave the motion sensing on, it WILL go off if it detects any type of movement within 15 feet - leaves, bushes, birds, etc. The app unfortunately at least in IOS, does not allow you to choose different chime/ring types when someone presses the bell, but the included chime does give you two options. Once up and running, notifications come in pretty quickly, usually within a few seconds, however, I noticed off-and-on lag in connecting to live video from the doorbell to the app. Sometimes it would connect in as little as 5 seconds (good) and other times as long as 20+ seconds (bad), even under optimal Wi-fi signals. There have been a handful of times when it did not send a notification at all when the bell button has been pressed, maybe 1 out of 5 or so times. Not sure of the reason for this, though perhaps it can be addressed in a future firmware update. Video is 1080p and decently clear with few jitters. Sound is understandable both ways. Night vision is understandably worse, but in decent distributed lighting the video is above average, though not outstanding. It gets the job done, though. The Battery takes a few hours to fully charge, and you’ll need to slide it out of it’s bracket and bring it in to charge, as the battery isn’t the type you can pop out and put a fresh one in – it’s built into the device and sealed. I haven’t had it long enough to fully determine how good the battery life is over time, but using the free account version for now, my suggestion would be to turn motion sensing off to save on battery unless you really need it as with any video device this feature eats up power more than most. It's important to keep in mind this is a sub-$70 device, so if you try to compare it to some other video doorbells that cost twice that (or even more), you may be slightly disappointed, but for the price, this mostly does the job and even offers (very) limited options to use it and not force you into a subscription. The indoor chime uses USB for power oddly, which to me is a minus, so you have to use the included USB A/C adapter to plug it into a wall outlet which makes it stick out more than similar A/C chimes from other makers. The occasional missed notification and delay in live connecting is also a hiccup I do hope they fix in future updates, as well as adding 5 GHz support which would be nice, too. So, It’s not perfect by any means, but then again, I’ve seen much more expensive doorbells have glaring bugs, too. If you are on a budget and simply need a video doorbell to let you know when someone is at the door, and to see and maybe talk to that someone briefly, this should be fine for many. If you require interchangeable batteries, customized greetings, and very detailed customized settings, you may need to spend more on another brand. I recommend this one for those who don’t need all of the fluff, but still want the basics at an affordable price. My rating of three stars is not because I think it’s “bad” – it’s just that due to the laggy bugs it does have, it bumps it down to “average” for me. Still worth the price, but again, just realize what you are and are not getting compared to much more expensive options.

We do not have a lot of space between our chimney & door, this fits great in our small space & doesn’t stick out too far. You can just peel & stick it on with rechargeable battery usage. We hardwired it instead of using the batteries, it only rings with the chime that came with it which is a usb chime that also comes with a plug this sticks out a bit far & is a little bulky. Set up was super easy & was done in minutes, connection via the app was also very simple & quick. Notifications are displayed in a banner on my phone & it only goes off if someone goes in & out, not constantly with every little movement. There is livestream feed & two way audio, there’s a delay in the audio & it’s clear using my phone but the person on the other end sounded like a robot. The video is clear & extends pretty far, clips are in 30 second intervals & I like with this doorbell that you get free 24 hr. video storage, it’s great for those who don’t want to pay for a subscription, that plan is available at a pretty reasonable yearly rate. A better plan is also available with insurance & theft protection. I wasn’t really impressed with the night vision, it’s ok but a bit blurry & I wish the doorbell’s ring lit up at night so you could see where to press to ring it in the dark. We never tried using Alexa with it. Other than those few minor issues we really like it, works much better than our other brand video doorbell.

Basic Doorbell and Chime That Hits The Mark

The Kangaroo Smart Wi-Fi Video Doorbell does the job. It was simple to install and only took a few minutes to configure and get up and running using the in home wi-fi. From an installation perspective, it comes with hardware that you can use to mount it on the outside surface with screws or use the included adhesive to stick it on. I have used the adhesive and it seems to be holding very well. I’ll switch to hardware at some point in the future if necessary. From a power perspective, you have the option of hardwiring it to the home or have it run off of the rechargeable battery. I chose to use the battery for convenience and so far it is working just fine after a week. Once the doorbell was configured, I plugged in the chime in the middle of the house so it could be easily heard and it too was very simple to add to the overall setup. It has two chimes to choose from so it’s just up to your preference. It’s a simple camera with simple options. It doesn’t have any configurable zones like some others do but since it is only looking out at about 15 feet away, I haven’t had to adjust anything or turn it, etc. to stop any unnecessary alerts. The base and free alerting will hold your recordings for 24 hours and additional features are available should you desire longer storage times such as 30 days of storage, the ability to add sensors, etc. For now, I’ve opted for the base install and will determine later if something additional is necessary. If you are looking for a basic doorbell with wi-fi capability, this should suit you just fine and knowing there are additional options to add on later is a plus.

I must say I’m quite impressed with this video door bell from Kangaroo. From install to setup and first use, everything just works and is very intuitive. Starting with fit and finish, this feels like a very well made product with premium materials. I was especially impressed to see everything was included to hardwire this doorbell (which I opted to go ahead and do rather than relying on battery power). The mount is very sturdy and, being that it has a security screw threaded on the bottom, I’m not worried it’s going to come out or someone is going to take off with it anytime soon. Setup was a breeze, install took me probably 20 minutes as we have faux stone on our exterior so it’s far from a flat mounting surface. However, I managed to use the anchors from our previous doorbell and mounted a wood plate to attach the doorbell to. Done. Video quality is very good. Our doorbell is mounted approx 3.5 feet off the ground and I can see myself at 6ft tall very easily in recordings. Audio comes through nice and clear. I would feel very confident I would be able to see and hear fine details from whomever is standing at our door. I like the functionality of having the ability to do a live look in and interact with someone at the door in real time. Or, if I can’t do either, the ability to go back and look at motion events or rings is great, though, without a subscription, you’re limited to the current days events and previous events are lost. The included chime is easy to hide and plenty loud enough to put in our living room and hear from anywhere in the house. It’s also customizable to a more pleasant chime than a classic chime. We do not have a Kangaroo security system to tie this in to and we opted not to pay for a subscription for monitoring and the ability to look through activity history. However, I could see these being very useful, especially with an integrated security system. Also, Kangaroo offers some added protection from porch pirates through optional loss coverage for a fee. For the price, this is a pretty incredible product. It’s not as feature rich as similar products out there but it’s also much cheaper and feels on equal footing as far as quality is concerned. Great product!

I really like this Kangaroo - Smart Wi-Fi Video Doorbell with Chime. The size is comparable to most other digital door bells. Nothing too much different. I like the dark color because it won’t show all the dirt & dust that accumulates in our front porch. I’m especially happy that it does not require any hard wiring. So it’s literally as simple as Devine where you want to mount it and putting 2 screws in the wall. The doorbell is rechargeable & based on how active your front door is, it will last a few days/weeks. That yo some people is a draw back. Hard wired is harder to install but once it’s up, it’s up & working until you lose power. The door chime can be plugged in anywhere in the home and will stay out. I suggest putting it in a large room or middle of the home. For best sound carrying. The app is simple and can be easily routed. The video and pictures that are revised and saved can easily be accessible and look fairly decent. Over all this is the best budget doorbell on the market.

I have had this video doorbell for more than a week now and I am pretty satisfied with the value and features that it provides against its cost. Here are more detailed observations and thoughts: The bad stuff first :) The packaging was really poor. The doorbell and all the accessories (including chime) were in a flimsy package and things were already kind of falling out of it. Now, the good stuff. The installation and setup was super easy. You download the mobile app (I have Samsung Galaxy S22), setup an account (if you don't already have one) and then you just follow the set up steps in the app. It took me around 10 minutes to complete the setup. The doorbell comes with a backplate which can be attached to a surface via 3M tape on the back or screws (for more secure installation). There is also a security screw on the backplate to somewhat secure the doorbell with the backplate. There is also an option to hardwire the doorbell and the required wires etc are provided in the package. I used the non-hardwired option. The attached Chime can be plugged into a USB port directly (if you have one) or via the included adapter. This is one of the things that I don't like about this doorbell. As I have relatively old house, I don't have any USB power outlets. So, I have to use it with the adapter and it doesn't look very good. It would have been better if Chime had an option to directly plug into a power outlet. From features perspective, everything works but can definitely be improved. For example, starting the "Live" view in the app takes around 5-10 seconds. The speaker is Ok and there is feedback/echo from the speaker on the doorbell. I guess you get what you paid for :) The basic plan which doesn't cost any money let's you review activities up to 24 hours. There are paid plans which provide more storage etc. I haven't subscribed to any as I already have a security system. I plan to use it purely as a doorbell with basic features of capturing videos when deliveries are made. The other improvement area is related to Chime setup. Currently the android app doesn't allow a way to change the sound that Chime makes or increase it's duration etc. The out of the box setting is a not-so-loud sound with a very brief chime which is easy to miss. I would have liked to have louder sound which last for couple of seconds so that you don't miss it. So, overall it is a decent video doorbell which has basic features but is affordable due to its low price.

This budget friendly doorbell video camera is the best on the market! The camera quality & resolution is so crystal clear it looks like 4K quality from a FHD camera sensor. The built in rechargeable battery is a great bonus, if you can’t hardwire it to your analog doorbell chime system. The added USB Chime has a pretty loud little speaker driver, so it’ll alert you when someone rings it. No doubt, Kangaroo Security is the way to go.

Summary: The Kangaroo - Smart Wi-Fi Video Doorbell with Chime is what you'd expect from a cheaper alternative to the major brands, no real features, 12 seconds of video recording and 24 hours of hosting on their cloud service. I would not recommend it. What's in the box: Kangaroo Smart Video Doorbell USB Chime Power brick USB cable installation hardware (screws and wires) Installation: The installation of the video door bell was pretty simple, I already a door bell button from a previous door bell system so I only needed to make 1 additional hole to fit the center-to-center of the mount/backplate. Kangaroo provides the wiring and wire twist connectors but they were too big so I just had to use tape. Setup: Setting up the Kangaroo Video doorbell was just as simple as the installation. The Kangaroo app walk you through the whole process and is a lot faster than other apps that fumbles to find their components and connects to the wi-fi. All I had to do was confirm my wi-fi network and show the generated QR code to the camera! it was really simple. You do also have to locate and setup the chime but it was also quick to discover and set that up. Conclusion: The install and setup I would give Kangaroo a 8 (1 being difficult and 10 being easiest) but for actual use and User interface, I'd give it 4. The user interface is some what hard to navigate, few things are intuitive but more items are just hidden or you need to go through the menu. Using the Video door bell isn't too hard but when you're trying to teach the older baby boomer generation to use it, you start to realize how much it's difficult for them. Other Services: If you sign up for the basic service, the video door bell will only record 12 seconds of video and host it on their cloud for 24 hours. If you want any additional length of time for the video recording you'll need to sign up for kangaroo's premium service with no option to locally record and hold your own videos. For this reason I cannot recommend this product.

Very easy to install. Great picture quality. Only complaint is short battery life, but I might not have charged it enough.

This has been a great device and I haven’t had any challenges. I was apprehensive at first because it was an open-box purchase but it’s been incredible. Not to mention, my purchase was via the app, so I was in and out as far as pick-up. I’ve been using my Kangaroo device for a few weeks not now and have zero issues. I recommended this product to neighbors, colleagues and friends. I hope who ever reads this tries it out for themselves too.
