Double the Hardy, Double the Insanity

Legend is a movie that aspires to be a great gangster epic and in some regards, it is. This is not the gangster epic in the same vein as something like Goodfellas, though. It is more a representation than an adaptation, which is fine because it works for the characters at play and never fails to be thoroughly entertaining. Director Brian Helgeland delivered a straightforward, but rousing biopic of Jackie Robinson two years ago in 42, but has written films such as L.A. Confidential and Mystic River in his twenty-seven years in Hollywood. With Legend, Helgeland tests his directorial prowess by taking on a much bigger scope and a more complex story that features a diverse set of personalities. Each of these things having to be managed and pieced together in a way that feels coherent. There are times you can almost feel the structure creaking under it's own weight. Near the end of the second act the film almost gives way to a full on tsunami of varied tones and plot strands falling in on themselves and flooding out to leave behind nothing more than puddles of once strong and vibrant storytelling methods as well as the exceptional double performance of Tom Hardy. Lucky for Helgeland, he hired an actor with as much gravitas and ability as Hardy allowing him to pull off this stunt and leave the audience ruptured in his showing to the point we don't so much care about what else is going on around him. We acknowledge the given circumstances the real-life people fell into, but we're all just watching to see what Hardy does with the situation.

Tom Hardy ignites the screen playing both of the notorious Kray twins in this fabulous biopic. Reggie Kray, is a dapper businessman gangster while his gay brother Ronnie an unstable and fragile Little Caesar who needs pills to not lose his head . Hardy brings both of them to life in a film that has a surprising touch of humor. Emily Browning plays Reggie's love who narrates the film and does a fine job as well as the rest of cast including former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston as the Scotland Yard detective who wants to take them down and mob movie veteran Chazz Palminteri as an American gangster who middle-mans a deal between the Krays and legendary gangster Meyer Lansky. The film overall while slows down a bit in the later half moves at a rapid rate and is well directed by Brian Helgeland (Payback). The extras on the Blu-ray are light which is pretty much the M.O. for major studio titles anymore but the film itself is a nice gem that while may feel a bit glitzy for some is still a fun, sometimes humorous gangster film. Highly recommended.

A sometimes brutal story about rise and the fall of the Kray twins. A british crime pair that ran the London club scene in the late fifties. One brother Reggie was a successful boxer, the other bother Ronnie, a twisted if not, mentally deranged sociopath, with a bent for violence and murder, This is the story of their relationships, and of their rise in London's late 50's criminal underground. Their carrear ultimate peaks the interest from the Philidelphia mob and it pressures the brothers relationship with each other. But this film is also a story of love, as Reggie falls for a local girl, Francis, their marriage takes place against her mothers wishes and it ends in a tragedic way. The film is well acted by the whole cast, and is edited and directed as a taught personal crime drama, with some violent twists and turns, in an effort to show the other than usual side of each of the prime characters, who all seem unable to escape from their social bounds.

The story of the Kray twins is a fascinating one, full of violence and deceit. In Legend, that story isn't really taken to its full potential, thanks to an unfortunately clunky structure despite brilliant performances, good humour and violence. Let's start with the best part of this film, that is Tom Hardy's performances as Ronnie and Reggie Kray. The amazing special effects make the dual show possible, but within minutes of the start here, you completely forget that these two characters are played by the same man. Hardy completely disappears into both men, with an unnerving but humorous turn as the psychotic Ronnie, and a more understated but powerful performance as Reggie, and that really deserves some praise. What's more is that this film does make use of the very violent nature of the history very well. As bloody as it is foul-mouthed, this isn't a pleasant film to watch, but the level of violence does leave an impression with regards to the Krays' crimes, making it seem all the more real, and all the more frightening. The big issue I have with this film, however, is that it's not an exhilarating watch. Historically interesting it may be, but at over two hours long, it's not something that will consistently entice you throughout. There are side plots that aren't picked up on enough, some characters don't get the development they really deserve based on the size of their role, and the plot takes a really long time to get going. The disappointing thing is that Legend isn't a bad film in any way, nor is it boring, but it gives you a sense of growing importance and tension towards a hopefully climactic end, but it never comes as you want it to

I'm a huge Tom Hardy fan so I had to see this. I really liked it & I'm a sucker for based on true event gangster stories. It's interesting to see how the UK mobsters are similar but yet so different than what we are used to seeing in our American mob films. Definitely worth purchasing, an impulsive mental gangster twin with brass knuckles & a mouth full of truth while the other twin (all Tom Hardy remember) is the brains & master mind with a heart of gold & a piece of steel he's not afraid to use EVER. See it!!

if you are watching Monty Python they were talking about to desperate criminals who did things to people if they didn't pay them. Well this movie is about the real two brothers and how they started to organize crime in England and start making a fortune has one brother was a little crazy all he wanted to shoot people or to it that people or torture people is not for the fainthearted it's not for children. Thank you for checking out my review

Bought this without seeing the movie at all and was blown away. The fact that Tom Hardy was playing twins made me hesitant at first, but he pulled it off. Watched it twice now and it still fools me. I literally forget it's him at times. As for the blu ray quality, the picture is great. Very crisp. The soundtrack can seem a bit louder then it should at times, but overall it's pretty good. If you're a fan of Tom Hardy, buy this flick!

Tom Hardy is stepping into the void

Tom Hardy has stepped into the void left by great, tough guy actors like Robert Deniro. He oozes charisma and masculinity--in almost an old school way. Here he plays two brothers (the Kray Twins) who were gangsters in London back in the 50s and 60s. This is not the caliber of a Scorsese movie--but it's worth watching once just for Hardy's performance(s).

This is a nice gangster movie about the brutal regime of the Kray Brothers. Tom Hardy is excellent, as all ways, playing both brothers. The Kray's have become legends on the streets of London and this movie clearly shows why. Blu-ray picture and sound are great. For fans of the genre and Hardy fans, highly recommended!!

this movie gives you some educational incite into gangster life in England ( not much different than here ) The very impressive acting by the lead characters in this film is pretty awesome! Considering that the brothers were played by the same actor. That being said, the movie was pretty good. But the acting was pretty awesome!

This is a story about the '60's era London gangster named the Kray's It's written well and certainly the acting is top notch... but it will have a different "tone" than our more familiar American type gangsters. I think it's worth adding to the video library! I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

I first saw this movie on DIRECTV. Knew I had to own it. Tom Hardy is the most versatile actor I've seen in many a year, and this one of his very best performances. To pull off a duel role like this is i.m.o. one of the most difficult things an actor can attempt to do, and he does it flawlessly. The movie can be hilarious at times, especially when he plays Ronnie. Also Emily Browning is quite good in her role. The movie is violent, funny, and touching all at the same time. A great movie!

Playing two really different people in one movie must be difficult but hardy pulls it off. Great performance about two Gangster brother base on a true story. Some will love this movie and some won't I personally really enjoyed it with the bar scene being the best

While not the most accurate biopic of the infamous Kray brothers, this films is nonetheless a great exemplification of Tom Hardy's abilities as an actor. Go into this film with an open mind and ready to have fun, because it is a crazy ride of a film.

The movie is very interesting and fairly unexpected in many ways. Tom Hardy is a brilliant actor and plays the twins well. Hard to imagine it's the same actor. I didn't love it, that is, to want to see it many times, but I am glad I got it.

Tom Hardy's most underrated performance. The accents are a bit rough, but authentic. That being said, you have to pay attention to understand. But since your listening so attentively, you see how great the performance was. Bravo!

Excellent movie! Tom hardy is a great actor. His ability to show in this movie how his character Iinitially seemed so harsh in his position as a Russian military officer then the love for a women and having been orphaned due to German occupation brought out deep compassion for the wrongs done to children that changed his agenda somewhat no matter the cost to his military position.

A good movie. Tom is great, the cast mesh well and it's a great story. I think the female lead could have been used a lot more. Biggest issue, it feels like it just ended. It could have used a little more resolution.
