I bought the Lenovo - IdeaPad Slim 1-14AST-05 14" a few weeks back. I'm not a gamer. I use Opera, one of the lightest browser available. Out of the box, this thing ran slow and hesitated performing any application but particularly when surfing the Web. There is nothing more frustrating than hitting a key and waiting many seconds for a task that should execute instantly. I'm talking about something as simple as opening a Word document or attempting to scroll through the File Explorer file directory. Hesitation, stagger, wait !!! Research on the problems I experienced said to remove the bloatware, which I did. No help! This thing still runs slow and hesitates when performing tasks. My old Dell 620 runs circles around this machine. In a word - this laptop sucks!

We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing performance issues with your Lenovo IdeaPad 1-14, model number 81VS003BUS. This model ships with Windows 10 S-Mode Operating System. Windows 10 S-Mode provides added security by only allowing APPs available ( and therefore certified by Microsoft) at the Microsoft Store. If you don't need the added security or you need to install APPs not available at the Microsoft Store, you can switch to standard Windows 10 Home 64-bit Operating System, at no additional cost. If you have switched out of S-Mode, be sure any software you installed is compatible with Windows 10. There is no need to install Microsoft Office software. The software is already part of the operating system, you just need to activate the software with a purchased product key. If you have installed a copy of Microsoft Office, this is conflicting with the existing copy on the system and this will slow your system down. If you have installed a 3rd party anti-virus program, be sure that Windows Defender is turned off and that the trial version of McAfee Anti-Virus software is uninstalled. There can only be one anti-virus program on the system. You may need to restore your system to original factory default settings if any of the programming errors have occurred. You can do that by typing "restore" in the Cortana search window. Just click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom left of your Windows 10 Desktop. Click on "Reset This PC" Then click on "Get Started" and follow the on screen directions to restore to factory defaults. If the problem persists, we recommend you contact Lenovo Tech Support at: 877-453-6686.

Poor Memory and SSD

We were surprised at how slow this laptop was!
As a comparison, an 11-year-old Acer AO722 with an AMD C-60 upgraded to an SSD and 8GB of 2Rx8 memory would run circles around this thing (sad). The A6-9220e used in this laptop is designed for low power consumption, but with a faster front bus speed and superior graphics it should perform significantly faster than it's great-grandfather the C-60. So we decided to do some digging/testing to see where the problems were.
First, we noticed that there was a significant problem with the memory Lenovo managed to solder to the board: 4GB of DDR4-1866 1Rx16. This is way below the optimal memory AMD suggests for Windows 10: 8GB DDR4-2133 2Rx8. We suspect that the 1866 MHz memory was further utilized to reduce power consumption, but the 1Rx16 rank is incredibly crippling. Even 1Rx8 rank @ 1866 MHz would have been a major improvement.
Also, when the installed memory was tested, it performs slower than other DDR4-1866 1Rx16 sticks of memory. It's almost as if the memory channels Virtualization was punching way below 1866 MHz. Even with the BIOS upgrade, this problem persisted (We were hoping it was in the firmware). We believe this may be another Lenovo attempt to extend battery life.
Note to Lenovo: Please stop soldering memory to the motherboards, your system qualities are far better than that! All your managing to do in most cases is kill dual channel mode performance, and reduce the extended lifetime of your laptops. While soldered memory is acceptable on devices with Chrome OS, it is a dead end when it comes to Windows devices.
On Windows 10 devices running 4GB of memory, or less, virtual memory (VM or paging file) usage often begins by the time the system reaches 2.5GB of memory storage. You must understand that current memory is also being shared by the graphics that is internal to most CPUs. It's part of the reason why laptop gaming often improves, even on older laptops, if the system is running 16GB of memory or better. Regardless, the VM uses the hard drive / eMMC / SSD to extend the physical memory, which can be incredibly slow. The problem for eMMC's and SSD's is that they're constantly being written to reducing their lifespan. A system that can support 8GB of memory greatly reduces this problem.
This is where we found our problem. The Union Memory SSD (01FR572) that Lenovo has chosen to use in this laptop is complete and utter trash! Once again, we're not sure if this is meant to be a power thing, but it's bandwidth performance was nearly non-existent. As a test, we removed the SSD and installed Windows 10 Pro onto a high grade Samsung SD card (Yes, a standard size SD card), and actually managed better performance than Lenovo's stock setup!
Next, we cloned the factory SSD to a Transcend TS128GMTS430S and replaced it. Even with the 4GB memory wall the performance was substantially better. The boot time was so fast, we had to cut the laptop off and try it again to verify the quickness. Programs opened nearly immediately, as well as tabs using the Edge Browser. You gotta understand, it's still being strangled by the memory bandwidth / rank.
It's sad that this laptop requires a $50+ upgrade just to make it more usable.

We purchased these laptops at the tail end of the virtual learning of the school year last year. We figured we store them and use them when the kids were back at school this year. We upgrades our internet to AT&T fiber service. Last I checked we're streaming at 950 mbps so the internet is not an issue and then we added a Eero plus mesh system from Best Buy so we know that we have strong internet everywhere in the house. So the school year started and went to use these Lenovo and what a waste of money these things are. Trying to zoom is impossible. These things are so slow its not worth the money even to surf the internet and the fact that we purchased 2 of them makes me even more upset. We ended up connecting our work computers so the kids can at least finish there school day and we're out to purchase some HP computers. It was a struggle trying to get our kids through the first day of school with these Lenovo laptops. BYE BYE LENOVO!!! HELLO HP!!!

I bought this laptop to do my homework on while I was at work. I just assumed the internet sucked at work. Came home connected to my home router and it was just as slow. At the time best buy was selling these for 200 bucks and I regret buying it but I thought it would be capable of opening a few tabs to do research and type a word document. I was mistaken. I should of spent more on a better laptop.

Don't waste your time or money on this. I bought this for my son to use for virtual school. But it struggles to just log in, much less browse the internet. And you can forget about running Zoom. Just trying to open the Start menu takes a good 10 seconds of waiting between click and actually seeing the menu. Don't think I'll be buying any Lenovo products in the future.

This slow dinosaur of a laptop was a complete waste of my money. I was also told some good advice a long time ago and I should have listened "you buy cheap, you buy twice. " I thought that this would be a good computer for my high school daughter. It is awful. It is too slow to serve any good. I should have purchased a Dell.

DO NOT buy this laptop under any circumstances. They say it’s a good starter for word processing and web browsing. Even that much is wrong. You can’t open one browser tab, let alone multiple, without waiting 5-6 minutes for the page to load. Any browser - Edge, IE, Chrome, Firefox. Tried them all. You can’t run word processing. Sent it in for repairs - took two months (rather than the 8-9 days I was told), so I lost the ability to return the terrible product. Pretty smart on their end. Product came back, unchanged and unusable if not worse? Tried every format of tech support - resets, uninstall all programs, turn off the graphics (good luck reading any text), cleaned hard drive/cache, check for updates, check for malware, have their support staff remote in (they couldn’t get a simple scan done because that is how slow the computer is). Nothing works. Solution I got? Send it in for another repair! We will do the same thing all over again!!
My advice - don’t buy. You cannot do anything on here besides log in, and even that takes ages. Save the money and buy a nicer laptop, probably not a Lenovo given their awful customer service.

I am looking at the reviews on BB for my next Laptop, I do not own this item. I have done numerous searches on the specifications for computing processors and what I have gleaned is that generally Intel is the choose for multitasking and music file conversion. AMD unless it is the top of the line Reyzen, is for light web browsing and email sending. Also, a 10th Generation I3 is more likely to have better performance than a 7th Generation I7. AMD has all these impressive processor names, but really it just makes it more difficult making a sane decision. If an item is of interest, copy and past the processor name into your web browser> type in benchmarks after it example: Radeon R4 benchmarks>then hit images. Usually there is some sort of chart or graph showing that processor in relationship to others. It is surprising what can be found, a computer that seems outstanding might be a real dud when it is put in perspective for its intended use.....Just my $.02

I got this as a Birthmas present over a year ago. For the price, this laptop is very much worth its dollar. It may be cheap and slow, but it gets what you need done as long as you aren't trying to run a game or anything flashy. Media in general is not very friendly to this laptop. Streaming can be done but it may be slow or laggy.
General browsing, use for school or work is more than fine. Get this for your kids if you dont want to deal with parental administrations :) nothing fun runs well on here and is not worth the effort in the end.
