The LG SP9YA has an impressive build quality, really slim and wide made of plastic, feels solid and durable with a metal grille around the sides to protect the speakers. The sub on the other hand is also made of plastic, but it’s covered with fabric which could easily get dirty or damaged. I will advise to think on your sub placement if you have kids or pets. The LG SP9YA offers a neutral, balanced and clean sound, it’s suitable for listening to lots of different audio contents. Despite being a 5.1.2 system, it doesn't offer a very immersive surround experience without the help of the SPK8-S surround speakers, which you can buy separately and would upgrade the system to a 7.1.2. Note: The surround speakers is not what you might think as completely wireless! (Speaker and power cord cable) this set is wireless from the soundbar but it uses cables to connect each speaker to a transmitter/power amplifier. My experience with the system after integrating the surround speaker has been really good, so I will be keeping the system thanks to its looks, balanced performance and out all current 2021 sound bars from other brands LG offers more options like audio formats, file formats, and connectivity. Is it perfect? No, So I’ll provide examples of my personal use and how it performed so you have a better idea. 1. The LG sound bar phone app is really convenient, helpful, and easy to use when configuring settings for the bar. Once installed I ran the AI room correction, and the difference in sound to what I previously had set was really not much of a difference or maybe nothing at all. 2. EQ Presets - A Good advice! Do not rely only on one EQ preset like the AI Sound Pro or Standard. TV I found the AI Sound Pro and Standard EQ to be good for watching news, and documental. Music When watching music videos or just listening to music of youtube or simply streaming from your phone make sure to set you EQ to music, you will find that the bar performs better and also your sub will also sound a bit deep and stronger. For those heavy bass lovers, this subwoofer it’s not for you. I played with the sub settings and while it did some changes it did not perform as strong as I have experienced with other systems at the same volume, in order to achieve a strong performance from the sub I had to raise the volume on the bar to almost its limits to get that heavy punch I wanted. I guess that’s how LG/Meridian has tuned the sub just to be balanced. Cinema If you are not playing any movies in Atmos content, then select the Cinema EQ, all sound is enhanced, and surprising I found the subwoofer also to perform really well. Due to my living room configuration being open to the kitchen I have the subwoofer right next to the sofa facing the corner of the wall in order to achieve and dispense the sound better with the sub and bass levels set to +3 Game/Sports Every sound feels present and clean when you select the correct EQ for each content. 3. Connectivity Here’s where I have not been able to find any solution, I have an Xbox series X connected to the bar which supports 4k pass-through, when I test 4k performance the Xbox displays everything is supported with its green checkmarks (HDR10, Dolby Vision) yet I have tried numerous 4k movies and I can only see displaying in HDR10 format, I have looked on my tv settings and everything is set to allow Dolby Vision but I never get the option to select it. 4. Compatibility with AI Services I have not tried any so far.

I've had this for more than a year now and recently paired it with the satellite speakers. Overall a pretty good soundbar, completely blows away a Vizio surround soundbar system purchased several years ago. Pros: - Companion app is fairly easy to use and has lots of customization options. I don't even use the remote that came with it and the app updates the soundbar settings instantly. - When used with eARC and Dolby Atmos the sound quality is very good. Cons: - App doesn't really explain some features or when you should use them for someone who's not an audio expert like me - Overall sound does not get very loud. There are large volume changes from around 10-20, but beyond that the increases are very minimal and make little difference. - Auto Volume On/Off doesn't work well. During one show the dialogue was completely washed out and it took forever to figure out this was the culprit. Once turned off you could actually hear people talking, however even then the dialogue volume is not great with the soundbar. - There have been some bugs with communications between the TV and the soundbar, I don't know which was the culprit but there are times when the soundbar doesn't turn on with the TV, and other times when the soundbar IS turned on with the TV but no sound is being passed through, and you have to switch the TV settings from Audio System to TV Speakers and back to Audio System in order to get sound. - One occasion where the subwoofer appeared to be losing connection with the soundbar and you could hear it repeated dropping out and reconnecting. Never figured that out since it resolved itself.

Terrible when used with LG G1

This unit sounds pretty great, but does not work well with the LG G1 OLED I purchased along with it (which is crazy, right? They SHOULD work flawlessly together, but don't) I'm hoping its a fixable firmware issue, and I'm not sure if it's the Sound Bar or TV's fault, but the gist is that the experience of connecting them together via HDMI (eARC) is TERRIBLE. 1. I could not get ANY sound out of the Sound bar from the TV when I selected "Optical/ARC" in the sound output config of the G1. ONLY when I found the advanced "enable eARC" setting on the TV did the Sound Bar switch to a hidden input called eARC. Great! Now I have sound... but even though CEC was enabled on the TV, the TV's remote WOULD NOT control the volume of the sound bar, period. Nothing I tried ever got the sound bar to be controlled via the TV remote when in eARC mode (which, remember, is the ONLY way to get sound out). 2. Ok, fine... I'm using a Harmony remote and don't really need CEC and don't need the TV remote, anyway... but then I started noticing that when I would turn the TV and sound bar off, when I'd come back the next day and turn them ON, there would again be NO SOUND until I switched the Sound Bar's input OFF of the displayed eARC, then BACK to eARC, at which point sound would start again... there's some sort of VERY broken negotiation happening between these two devices. And no, it's not the cable. I even resorted to an overpriced $80 48GBPS HDMI cable certified for eARC and it has the exact same problems. In the end, I could never get things reliable via eARC, so I switched to an optical cable and told the TV to use optical, and voila, everything (included controlling the sound bar volume via the TV remote) works perfectly. I'm truly hoping this is a firmware issue on either the TV or sound bar and that they eventually fix it, but it's insane that LG owns both of these products and they work so terribly together over the eARC connection, which apparently you MUST USE (meaning, you can't use plain-old "ARC") if you connect them via HDMI. All that said, even over optical I'm very happy with the sound quality. Good (but not earth-shattering) bass, great intelligibility, and a "roundness" to voices I didn't get on my old Sony 2.1 sound bar. I'm very happy with the sound, just not the interoperability between *it* and a $2400 TV.

Lacking center channel performance compared to 8YA

I previously wrote an extensive review of the LG SP8YA which is the next model down from this one. Overall, I was extremely satisfied with that one. In fact, I was so satisfied, I wanted to see what the next model up, the SP9YA, would sound like in comparison. As far I could tell, the only difference is the 9YA includes two side-firing speakers on the bar which also extends it's length and width. While I don't think that is worth the extra $200, I saw an open box which was actually $70 cheaper than the new SP8YA I purchased, so I thought I'd give it a try. Overall, all the comments I posted for the SP98YA still stand. I went back and forth listening to both the 8YA and 9YA. It was very easy to re-pair the subwoofer and optional rear speakers back and forth. While I did find the 9YA created a slightly better surround sound environment for 7.1 content, I did notice one issue which unfortunately kept me from keeping it. It's very possible you would only notice if you compared the two side-by-side, but I heard a noticeable difference in center channel performance between the 8YA and 9YA. The center channel is primarily responsible for dialogue and it just sounded more "tinny" and less full on the 9YA compared to the 8YA. It's hard to explain but there was definitely a difference. Looking at rtings.com, they seem to have noticed the same thing as center channel performance is one of the few areas where the 8YA exceeded the 9YA by a good margin. Having those two extra side-firing speakers (and saving $70) would have been nice, but good dialogue is more important to me so I returned the 9YA and kept the 8YA. While the product was an open box, it appeared to be in like-new condition so I don't think that had anything to do with the center channel. I was hoping these two models were identical minus the extra two speakers, but it appears there may also be subtle differences in the front speakers as well (even though they have identical spec). I still rate the 9YA four stars as much of what I said about the 8YA still stands. However, my five-star rating sticks with the 8YA, a true bargain for what it delivers in such a small package. With either version, I still highly recommend the optional rear channel speakers to complete the setup.

I came from the Lg SK9Y with spk8-s powered wireless rear channel speakers. It lacked DTS HD and had other issues with Dolby vision timing while using the nvidia shield. It’s sound for a sound bar was “ok.” It is, after all, just a sound bar. I felt the need to upgrade and was thinking the Samsung 950 but since I already had the rear speakers, I decided to try this SP9YA where I could use my existing rear speakers. It is decidedly better than the SK9Y in all respects and all HD bitstream audios work. The new Lg app for iPhone to control speaker settings is much better and I was able to get this sound bar to sound pretty darn good. Bass is also much deeper than the old SK9Y by far. I’d give this a 4.5. We do have to remember that this is a sound bar and cannot rival a high end sound system as such but in my den, it does pretty darn good. I am using this with an Nvidia Shield 2019 pro to an Lg CX TV.

I read the one star reviews. I thought the same at first. Once i got my tv set correctly and the sound bar set up and adjusted i was blown away by the sound. The bass is great, and sound effects awesome. Got it on sale along with surround sound speakers. Worth every penny. I compared with(listen to) bose, samsung, jbl, sonos, sony and couple of others. Did my homework. This purchase at sale price, i feel like i got over. Heard some that were as good or maybe a lil better but started at 2 grand. Set up is the key have to download the manual. Only real issue i had was i had to go to three different stores to hear it and compare. Because somthing wasn't working display setup or whatever. It sounds even better once i got it set up correctly. Again read the manual to know what needs to be turn on or selected wasn't alot but made a huge difference.

5 stars despite a few issues I ran into. Pros: Sound quality impressive playing Dolby Atmos and DTS content. The side channels worked better than expecting simulating rear channel effects in my bedroom. The wireless subwoofer outperforms my Mono price 12 inch sub with ease. It's not BIC F12 quality but better than most HTIB I've heard. Lastly it was easy to setup and configure once I got the app installed and connected to my sound bar. The input might be off putting to some but EARC makes up with the lack of audio input. and all 4 ports of my OLEDs are 4K ports. Cons: Center channel audio quality is no better than my TV speakers at volumes 6-20. Increasing the volume does help but if you go too high you distortion. As mentioned before the simulated surround does a good job tricking you brain into thinking rear channel speakers are preset. However, this was in a bedroom. When I moved my soundbar to my basement and ran the calibration tool I could no longer feel or hear surround effects from the side or behind. Height audio was not impressive reflecting off two heights and ceiling surfaces. Could you hear it? Yes, but the presence was weak and audio quality was comparable to weak Logitech PC speakers. Conclusion: I'm giving this sound bar a five despite the negatives. I paid over five hundred dollars below MSRP buying open box and using gift cards. At $700 on sale now this sound bar is a 4, and at $1000 a 3. Trust me, there's nothing sounding like $1000 coming from this sound bar/woofer. But given what I paid for it and overall quality this sound bar is a must buy.

Overall best sound bar on the market. The bass on this thing knocks it out of the park. Not to mention the dolby atmos surrond sound. Definetly try this thing out with the “Amaze” trailer on youtube. Take full advantage of using a HDMI cable to connect it to your tv. If you get one be sure to try the dolby vision and dolby atmos with this soundbar. It’ll blow your mind. Well worth the money. I

This soundbar makes a great compliment for an LG TV. I have the 55" LG C1 OLED and it is the same width as that TV. The wireless soundbar is great since you can plug it in behind on either side and really feel the power of the bass. As for the soundbar itself, the display helps you tell when the TV and/or soundbar are turned on or off since the LG Smart Remote controls both (along with my Roku), helping reduce the number of remotes needed. It's easy to read and adjust the volume with the TV remote as well and the sound is crisp, with noticeable highs and mids. When I turn Hulu on, the subwoofer definitely makes the loading screen sound feel all that more heard with the deep bass that I couldn't tell before from my old TV.

This sound bar will deliver a decent sound under normal surround sound conditions but is much more capable when delivering dolby atmos signal. The atmos sounds deeper and more powerful, despite not really giving the true atmost experience as far as spatial sound goes. It will just sound better than content with a regular signal. It will not come close to a real atmos setup but I suppose for the price it does the job. Great features like ai sound pro make a difference.

It sounds great. Took me an hour to get the Soundbar App to connect to my Wifi Router. If you have this issue connecting it try resetting it by holding down the WiFi button. I wish the buttons were lit up or elevated for side viewing. The subwoofer bass is not too much at all but for the price, I thought it would have been configurable to have more of a kick. The moment I was lookin for.. Apple AirPlay was not a seamless process for me and due to my Bluetooth/wifi interference, I was looking forward to this working. every time I tried to stream it worked 10% of the time however I just used the Spotify Integration and streamed directly from the app. I think this is worth getting if you have a new 2021 Model for the extra features. I have the 2020 CX model.

The sound demo at the store is way better than anything I've heard from any movies in my 4k collection. By this I mean in noticing the seperation of sound. The sound from my LG Oled tv is as good as the sound from the soundbar from a lot movies or shows I stream. It all comes down to the source material. Dune, Blade Runner, and Aquaman are insane. Most of the Disney stuff is mediocre. It was between this soundbar and the Sonos arc and this is the winner. I wouldn't pay twice as much when most movies don't offer the same premium sound quality. More money isn't going to improve poor source material.

This SOUNDBAR is constructed very well. The pairing process with the SOUNDBAR to subwoofer was smooth. The issue is the integration between my LG C1. The SOUNDBAR turns on randomly while to tv is off. The price is steep but the sound is very good. The rear speaker additions do not seem loud enough even after adjustment. All in all I’m content with the purchase and am hoping the issues are related to a setting on my tv.

Summary: good sound bar. Easy to install. Good quality and options. Pricey compared to some others in the market. Installation was easy. I mounted it on the wall with the help of a handyman along with my TV. I just wish the screws in the bottom of the soundbar to connect to the clamp for wall minting were a bit longer. Has multiple connectivity options. All the connectivity options switch on the sound bar, so if you start playing something from the phone through Apple Play or Google Cast the sound bar will wake up from stand by and start playing. No need to separately turn it on as long as it is powered and on stand by. Quality is good. I would not say it is the absolute best and I am not an expert on sounds but it sounds good. There are multiple sound modes and they work good (e.g, music and clear voice). The HDMI connection from the TV gives the best quality. It received a recent firmware update and the quality is significantly better after that. As long as it is connected to WiFi the updates are automatic and seamless (It received one when we were watching TV and there was barely a glitch) Use the phone app for easily switch between options etc. the phone app also has more settings than the remote (eg., set individual speaker levels).

The LG sound bar has excellent features and sound. The installation getting it connected was quick... BUT!!! Getting it connected to the "LG Sound Bar" app did not work as explained, even on Android or Apple Phones. I worked with LG Support and Best Buy Geek Squad for an hour or more, but never got it to work. Without the app, there are features you cannot setup with the LG Sound Bar. Only option is to do a exchange to see if it was a bad Sound Bar, but the replacement had the same issue. Since I have multiple Android Devices and have "Google Home" installed on my Android Phone, I decided to use it. It found the connected LG Sound Bar, went through updating, linking to Bluetooth, WIFI 5G and finally allowed me to login to my Amazon Account to add Alexa Support. Once "Google Home" completed setup, the LG Sound Bar App worked fine and allowed me to access all the LG Sound Bar features to get the sound settings, speakers and room calibration completed. With the LG Sound Bar setup using Google Home and the sale price, it now ROCKS with great sound and a great audio sound value too!!!
