As an old school rocker I never would have thought much about an amp like this. Line 6 makes some great stuff, but mostly more modern high tech digital gadgets. Were I was more like a warm up the old tube amp, jack in the ol' Strat and turn it up to 11 kinda dude.
This Spider Jam amp made me think twice. I played one in the store and was blown away at how versital it was and the quality of the amp models. Nice warm cleans, gritty blues, crunchy rock, head splitting metal. Whatever your bag, you can get a studio quality model from this thing. The reverb, delay, and tremolo controls work well and sound pretty good. The built in effects are really good and there is a zillion of them. You can even tweek em and save your own effects to recall at will. I have played around a bit with many different effects pedals/procsessos, analog and digital and I have to these are some of the best I have heard.
What makes this amp really special though is the jam and recording functions.. There is over 100 pre-recorded jam tracks stored in the amp. They are actual quality recordings of a live band, not cheap MIDI's. They are great for jamming along with. For the novice player, this would be a great tool for practicing scales, solos and spead building. For the more advanced player, its just a way to have a lot of fun. You can also download more songs or make your own.
The recording function is pretty cool. Record a riff and loop it back to crank out a solo or harmony to. It is also handy for writing music. You can use it to work out solos, harmonies and texturing played in real time. If you didn't like the last track you laid down on it, scrub it and crank out another. Its that easy. You can even store your jams on the built in SD card and put it on your computer. Which then you can fiddle with or distribute to band members/colaborators anywere.
The only small gripes i could find with this would be since there are soooo many effects and sounds, it can take a minut or two to find the one you are looking for. You can however hook up a Line6 short board or FVB express foot pedal rigs and activate your pre sellected effects directly. The silver nobs on the amp seem to be made of thin hollow plastic. They feel study enough but also might crack or chip if it gets banged around a bit. Lastly since there are so many options, sounds, effect, and all that, there is a learning curve to figure out how to use them all, navigate menues and all that. Its a simple layout and the manual is good, so a few hours of fiddling, you will be a pro.
If you have the 500 to shell out for this baby, it is well worth it. Great sound, excellent features, handy tools, and top quality. Beginners, rockers, and pros from all styles will really love this amp! I know I do, you will too!

I've always admired Line6 gear. The SpiderJam amp is a worthy addition to the line, although when I bought it I wasn't aware that it was a three-year-old design. The music tracks included all sound great, but I was hoping they would be expandable through Line6's online services. Sadly, this looks like a dead-end deal. There is a SDHC card slot on the back, but it looks like it's only usable as storage for your own compositions.
