I was replacing a worry-free 9-year-old Apple AirPort Extreme router, wanting newer security & faster wifi standard. So many mesh system reviews bemoan finicky child nodes, problems with activation and unreliable operation. Media reviews pointed out privacy concerns of some brands. AX3000 was not the fastest rated or highest rated by the leading Consumer reporting magazine, but the rating is still very close to the top and ease of installation was at the top. The magazine was right. It seems like the standards that are just a couple years old are the most stable. This 2-node mesh installed easily with the phone app. Of course, it is far faster than my old system. Plus, an eBay seller had wall shelves specifically for these units, just what I needed! My spouse (who hates ANY technology visible on the wall) appreciates that they do not look like some science-fiction menacing super spider life form invading our house. (We had electric outlets installed when remodeling in anticipation of a mesh system.) Color me happy!

So far this has been a great upgrade from my old Linksys router. The setup wasn’t as easy as my old router was. The instructions basically said to follow the app instructions and that didn’t work so I ended up having to call Linksys to get it setup. The customer service was excellent and the guy I spoke with very nice and knowledgeable and most importantly, I could understand what he was saying. But it was a long process. Other than that, once they were setup, I was able to get coverage throughout my house on all 3 levels with no dead zones anywhere, which is a first! This is also the first mesh router I’ve had though and I should’ve gone this route long before to cover the dead zones, instead of buying extenders and boosters. Would definitely recommend.

Immediately Faster Internet & Better Range

After installing this Linksys mesh system with only 1 router and 1 node, I saw a 50% increase in the range and speed compared to the provided router and node from my ISP. I work from home in a home office at the far end of the house away from the main router, and with the ISP equipment, my meetings were being dropped and my work was severely hindered by the lack in speed. I was thrilled to see the boost in speed and range once the Linksys mesh system was setup. The app gives a lot of control and I was also able to configure and fine tune the router settings for optimal performance. Now I'm seeing 50%+ better performance than what I had before.

So far so good. It has alerts if one of the nodes are offline and monitors the signals for each. I tried netgear for years and it jus seems they got worse. I'm done with them and came back to linksystems. I'm very happy and especially with fiber optic to cat5. One in lvg room, one in mstr bedroom, and one in garage. There is no hiccups. Highly suggested.

Linksys is a networking legend and, humorously, it never focuses on aesthetics. You can always trust that their devices will do what they are designed for without much regard to their physical appearance. Their budget is appropriately allocated higher for the technology than for the design, which is OK.

Absolutely great product! We have the older velop system and the app made it easy to replace and still use the velop system as a extension.

This is a review of the Linksys Atlas 6 AX63000 Dual-Band Mesh Router. I am not new to mesh routers or networking setups, but to understand the end user; I requested the assistance of my 83-year-old father, to see if he could set up a router as an end user with my guiding him through the process. My first impressions of opening the box were very positive. It was well laid out and easy to access all the included accessories, which in this case were 2 of the Atlas 6 mesh routers, two power supplies, and one ethernet cable. The box includes a warranty pamphlet and a quick start guide. The routers are about 1.2 pounds each, tall white structures, each with four ports and one power connector. The specs provide the new 802.11ax (WiFi 6) that provides greater range, speeds and ease of use. The technology built into the routers provides the latest encryption (WPA3) and is flawless in operation; it worked great, providing good coverage and speeds. Each of the mesh units has four ethernet ports that are labelled and relatively easy to interpret for someone familiar with networking. However, I think the first flaw in this system was that Linksys assumes that the end user is somewhat familiar with the basic networking concepts of “internet” and “ethernet”. The quick start guide is a one-page two side document that shows the various colour codes and asks you to download the Linksys app from the app store. The quick start guide does not have a QR code or identify the Linksys App other than the logo shown (if you open a web browser to the router, it does show a QR code). For an inexperienced user that is looking to improve wifi, Linksys could have identified more information on the quick start guide and the app download page as basic connections are required, without which this app, one cannot setup this product. One has to know where the internet plugs in. The experience does not get any better when one downloads the app. The Atlas line does not show up on the list of products (I used Velop), but it does not completely walk through the installation process other than asking if it is plugged in. A little hand-holding help would go a long way for the end user customer experience. Since the app requires your device to be connected to the internet for setup, and you need to be located nearby with Bluetooth on to set it up, the app falls short on that experience. My father was confused cause the minimal instructions in the app vs what I told him he needed to do. This part of the experience could use some improvement. Once you have signed into the app, the installation process is rather straightforward; look for the purple blinking light, and wait for it to do its magic while you go through a few screens on your mobile device or tablet. Adding additional units is simple as plugging in power and waiting for the purple light to start blinking before you add the node within your app. The app is basic in many ways and designed for ease of use. It does not bring a lot of unknown complex mumbo jumbo into the equation. Rather, it provides the basic info for an end user to monitor his network remotely (from anywhere). The result is that the app is quite basic but has some hidden advanced features. Parental control is rather basic. It allows you to pause the internet remotely, schedule a pause / manage “internet” time or block specific websites. This is very basic and similar to other mesh systems in capabilities. The overall app impressions were not very impressive to an advanced user like me, but for a basic user, its plenty. Among the advanced features found as I drilled down, the various menu was a feature I was looking forward to. It is the ability to put the units into “bridge” mode. Useful if you are like me that run a pfSense firewall and do not need routing capabilities from the router. These Atlas 6 nodes can run wired and wireless backhaul for connectivity between the units. One can plug in ethernet ports on remote units as each node has three local ethernet ports should you need to extend your physical network. The advanced features of the router are not exactly easy to find, but once you go through the menu, you will find them. I also spent some time on the Linksys support page for the product to see what other features I missed by starting with the app. There is more detailed install instructions on the website than the app. The overall experience for the router is positive. Given that the mesh network with its dual-band router works very well. There is a marked penalty in speed if you are connected to the nodes wirelessly, as you are sharing the existing bandwidth for not only the internet but inter-node communication. The Tri-band Atlas 6 Pro units would do much better in making sure you are getting the full speed between the units as they have a dedicated 3rd channel. This problem goes away if you use a wired backhaul, which everyone should be doing so, as it makes the experience so much better. All you need to do is connect an Ethernet cable to one of the main node’s Ethernet ports and run the wire into the child node on the ‘internet’ port. That will now have the full gigabit backend to utilise the full speeds of your internet provider. In the final comments, I love the Linksys Atlas 6 routers. They are well designed, easy to use, and stupendously fast with a good range. The nodes are discrete and can easily be added to a home. If you are looking for a mesh system and have some experience with networking or are willing to work with the app and Linksys support (should you need it), the Atlas 6 is a sound starter system for anybody looking to improve wifi coverage at home.
