Micro-sized, But Has A Long Reach Into Dead Spots

The Velop Micro 6 Mesh router is a terrific option for anyone looking to conquer their home’s Wi-Fi dead spots and also don’t require “extras” like Ethernet ports on the child nodes, in addition to the parent node (router), or the very latest Wi-Fi standard, Wi-Fi 7. What I like most is that the Micro 6 is powerful without being a giant eyesore. It’s significantly smaller than most other mesh systems. It truly is micro-sized and can easily hide in plain sight.
MY SITUATION
My previous mesh Wi-Fi 5 router (802.11ac) + two child nodes dates back to 2017. Frankly it’s all I needed for my 4 level, 1800 sq ft townhouse until now. Recently though the number of smart devices/IoT I’ve added to my home has multiplied to the point this router couldn’t handle all the traffic. The result was devices started randomly disconnecting or would be slow to respond to commands. Speed-wise, I was still fine since I only have 300Mbps up and down broadband and I few Wi-Fi 6E devices and zero Wi-Fi 7.
So when I saw the affordable Velop Micro 6 Mesh router that included with two child nodes I thought I’d give it a try. The Micro 6 Mesh has what Linksys calls “Cognitive Mesh,” which, as I understand it helps better manage IoT devices, one of my big problems with my older router, just what I needed.
SIZE AND PORTS
This system is really shrunken down from the size of a typical mesh router, especially the child nodes compared to my older system. The main node is flat-ish, similar to a traditional MIMO router, but without the external antennas. It has a clean unassuming look. Don’t mistake that for lacking features though. It has four speedy 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports and one WAN port. There’s also reset and power buttons.
The child nodes, on the other hand, are as basic as you get, just a single USB-C port for power. Perhaps because of its diminutive side, there is Ethernet port here. This may be a non-starter for those with, or planning to buy, IoT devices that depend on Ethernet or hub that requires Ethernet to work. An example here is the Philips Hue lighting system. With Ethernet only on the main node it limits placement of these kind of hubs and devices. Otherwise enjoy the child node’s diminutive size, similar to a 12oz soda can, that goes unnoticed on a shelf. You won’t miss not having Ethernet here.
SET UP PROCESS
Linksys also claims its Cognitive Mesh technology makes setup super easy. On paper that certainly looked to be true – plug in the router and nodes per instructions, install the Linksys app, snap a QR code on the user’s guide embedded with routers SSID and password, Select the router’s SSID on your device and follow the app’s instructions. The whole process at this point takes a couple of minutes to complete.
However, I did run into a few glitches, but overcame them after a quick troubleshooting. I won’t go into detail because I believe these were one-offs as I had no problems the 2nd try, and this doesn’t impact my opinion of this router. But I will say I’m not a fan of the set-up process or Linksys’s app. For one it assumes the user wants “WPA2/WPA3 Transitional” security. To be honest, I don’t know the formal SSID and password requirements for WPA3. What I do know is, based on the demands in the app, I’d have to update my Wi-Fi settings in all my smart devices as my current SSID and password were a character too short and had no symbols, just alpha-numeric. Only after I set up the router could I go back into the app and roll back security to WPA2 with my old SSID and password. I will eventually go WPA3 but this was not the day and I didn’t like being “forced” before I was ready.
PERFORMANCE
Once set-up I moved the location of the two child nodes around to find the optimal rooms to place each in. The main router must always be on the first floor because that’s where my Internet cable enters the house. I’ll add that my house is an open floor plan – only the bedrooms and bathrooms have doors. As a reminder, I have 300/300 Internet service.
I placed the two nodes in different floors and then do a speed check. “Rinse and Repeat” in different rooms until I was satisfied I tried enough combinations. My best result was a nodes in the halls on level 2 and 3. In this configuration my Internet speeds, with the bedroom doors open, were: level 1 300Mbps, level 2 300, level 3 250, level 4 175. For three of four levels that’s exactly or very close to my actual Internet service, something my previous mesh router never came close to getting. Even the 175 on level 4, while low, was better than I got with last router. Pretty impressive.
But it’s not all glory, there is a “but,” here. Inside the bedrooms, with doors closed, speeds dropped 25%. I will note that the interior doors in my house are standard builder’s grade and hollow, so YMMV if you have solid doors. Actually, since every house is different, it’s all a YMMV, but it looks like the Micro 6 Mesh has the power to fill in any dead zones your previous router could not. At least that is true in my situation.

Another Great Product from Linksys

I have used multiple Linksys routers over the years, as they are one of the most well known and reputable companies in the space. This product met my expectations and it provides a terrific home WiFi set-up.
Pros:
- First, this device had the easiest and most pain-free set-up process I have ever had with a WiFi router. All I had to do was unplug my old router, plug in this new one, reboot my modem, then scan a QR code in the quick start guide. Then I was able to change the name and password for my WiFi directly from my phone. I didn't have to install an app or anything. This was great!
- This device can handle up to 3 Gbps over WiFi. My ISP only provides 300 Mbps and it certainly handled those speeds with no issue. Thanks to the dual-band Mesh technology, I did not experience any latency issues while gaming, and our family of 4 had no issues streaming in HD on multiple devices at the same time.
- The extra nodes that are included help ensure that you have coverage over a wider area. The two nodes that were included with my router were more than enough to cover my 2300sq ft home and also some coverage outdoors as well.
- The extra nodes are nice and small, a bit smaller than a soda can, and can hide well in plain sight.
Cons:
- The cost of this WiFi product is a little on the high-end, but you do get what you pay for. The strong performance and thorough coverage of your home is worth it.

The Velop 6 has completely solved my dead spot issues in my house. Single story, nothing too big, but I was having issues for what seemed like ages with coverage and “outages” within my network.
First off, the devices themselves are very low key. They are not giant eyesores, but blend in nicely with my decor. That is a huge plus for me. The package comes with a parent node that plugs into your modem, and two child nodes. The child nodes themselves are simple, and easy to set up. The parent node has 2.5gb ethernet ports, power buttons, and a reset button.
The system comes built in with a “cognitive mesh” that assists with managing your connected devices to help with optimal efficiency. Setup wise, you just follow the instructions (plug in first), install the Linksys app from your phone's app store, scan the QR code and let the app do its thing! It couldn’t be easier.
Once the setup was done. Testing on my 1gb fiber I was able to pull between 650-850mbps depending on how close I was to a node and where in the house I was. Even on my front porch I was about to stream netflix with little to no issues.
Overall, I am super happy with this small but mighty mesh system from Linksys. Highly recommend!

The Linksys Velop Micro 6 is an easy to install mesh system that delivers great coverage and speed performance.
Out of the box, the system consists of the main router and two mesh nodes. The router has a modern clean look, all white measuring 8.5 by 5.5 inches and less than 2 inches high with only one light on the surface that changes color depending on the state of the connection. Three of the corners are rounded while the back left corner has a sharp angle which accentuates the contemporary appearance. The two mesh nodes are small at 4.5 inches high and 2.5 inches wide and about 2.25 inches deep. They are easy to place anywhere and have the same modern shapes as the router. Their small sizes allow them to blend well in most environments.
The setup is the easiest I’ve ever made for a wifi system. I just connected the main router to my internet provider modem-router and after a couple of minutes, the light went from a flashing blue to a solid white which indicates internet connection. Then I connected the nodes in two other rooms and in a couple of minutes the light in each turned to a solid white. The last step was to scan a provided QR code to connect my phone to the router. From there I downloaded the Linksys app to control the router. From there I changed the name of the network to my existing name and password to connect all my 70 devices in less than a minute.
The app has all the features that most people are looking for. You can see all the connected devices and prioritize some over others. Also, guest access can be set up and other customizations. After 2 weeks of use, I’m satisfied with the performance of this system. It’s a dual band system and Linksys claims the Velop Micro 6 properly set up will blanket up to 5,000 square feet. My house is about 3,000 square feet with 70 devices constantly connected to the wifi with 12 of them, cameras and lights, are placed outside. The signal has been solid and reliable. I get the internet through fiber rated at 1000 mbps which is more than enough for my needs. The Linksys Velop Micro 6 handles it with ease and delivers blazing-fast speeds; I haven’t done much gaming online but I regularly stream 4K programs to up to 3 TVs at a time when the family is home and I’ve experienced a smooth and lag-free connection that has been better than my previous mesh system. I haven’t noticed any more dead zones since I installed it. Also this system has WIFI 6 technology which is great now and for the future. One feature I like through the app is the channel finder that scans for the best channel that will provide the best performance.
Overall, I'm very happy with the Linksys Velop Micro 6 Mesh System. It’s very easy to set up and use and effortlessly handles the demands of the modern home such as 4K streaming, online gaming and the multitude of connected devices. With WIFI 6 technology, this router will be around for a long time. Its performance outweighs its affordable price. Highly recommended.

It was time to finally upgrade my home Wi-Fi router, and this is a great option to upgrade from my old Linksys Velop system. I was previously using the Velop with the bigger nodes that came out in 2017. The old system required me to buy a switch for my home setup because I wanted some devices connected to the Ethernet. What’s nice about the base router for this is that it has 4 Ethernet ports in the back, allowing me to remove the switch from my desk and free up some small space.
The instructions state that you can set this up in as little as 10 minutes and this took me a bit longer because of powering off and taking my old equipment down. I ran into a little bit of an issue trying to get it setup but after a few attempts, I was able to get connected and get all my other devices connected without issue. Depending on how many devices you have, it will take you more time to get them connected to the new Wi-Fi router than to set up the Wi-Fi router itself.
The main router is way more attractive looking on my desk compared to the older nodes that I had. One thing to note about the other nodes is that they do not have Ethernet ports in them like my old Velop system does, which I did use for my PS5 for faster speeds. I can say with confidence, that the nodes being all wireless had no effect on download speeds with my PS5 and other devices. I noticed a significantly faster download with the newer nodes going through wireless.
This comes with two other nodes and can cover up to 5,000 sq. ft. of space. This is more than enough for our house, and I have the two nodes placed in other areas of the house for consistent speeds. The nodes are much smaller than the older Velop, coming in at about half the size of my 2017 model. They connect via USB-C and can easily be hidden out of sight.
The main router and the nodes all have lights on the top to make it easy to see whether your internet is connected or having issues. There is a default mode where the light will turn off from 8 PM – 8 AM. There are some other advanced settings you can check out via the mobile app and administer your Wi-Fi from here. I already had the Linksys app, so you just use the same one if you already have it installed.
Overall, I’m impressed with the faster speeds I get from this router. If you have a faster internet connection from your provider and need to upgrade your Wi-Fi equipment, you can’t go wrong with this. We have not experienced any crashes with it since setup and I haven’t had to reboot it yet. I’d highly recommend this product and it’s also available at a cheaper price.

The Linksys Velop Micro 6 Mesh System is a great system for someone who wants to move up to a mesh system that brings WiFi signal to your entire house. The system advertises that you will be up and running within 10 minutes and that is absolutely true. If your internet modem is already active, all you have to do is connect your modem to the main unit and then go to the corners of your house and plug in the satellite units. Voila, you are up and running. If you want to change the WiFi name and password to your wireless signal, just go to a website on a computer connected to the default wireless name and you can make it your own by following the simple steps that the website guides you through. I currently have a 500 mbps internet service through my local cable company and doing speed tests I get over 500 mbps consistently. One of the unique features of this Micro Mesh system is the size of the satellite mesh units. They literally are the size of a 12 oz soda can. These mesh units do not take up any space and do not stand out at all. You will literally forget that they exist. The system has been up and running for over a week and not a single drop out or connection lost during streaming, gaming, and data transfer between computers on the same network. All the devices on the network that can take advantage of the WiFi 6 protocol will see consistent speeds and coverage. The mesh system allows you to go anywhere in your house and not have to make any network connection changes.

Was pleasantly surprised upon unboxing this unit. My previous setup was the first generation of the Velop which has been performing well aside from some intermittent dropped devices which required re-connection. My location is a rectangular bi-level, 20x50, so 2000 sq ft total. Router is in a corner on first level. My connections are base unit direct to router; 1 satellite in the room directly above; 2nd satellite 25 ft away on 2nd level. This gives me full bars on every device, every room.
This will be the third mesh system I've had to set up, I had a first generation Orbi that gave me trouble connecting to the satellite; and I noted before, the first generation Velop which also gave me difficulty setting up the 2nd satellite. With the Velop, I have over 30 devices connected - streaming TV's, Laptops, Desktops, Tablets, Printers, Thermostats, Surveillance cameras, etc. The setup for this new Velop system went like a dream - the satellites immediately connected, and broadcasting with the same name, all the devices hooked up without a problem.
The only system setting that I modified was to split the 2 bands (2&5Ghz) with their own name. The reason for doing this is that there are 2Ghz devices out there that don't like to be on the same named band with 5Ghz. They will either refuse to connect; or drop out altogether. Besides, it's a lot neater - I connect all the streaming devices & laptops to the 5G signal, and let everything else chug along on 2Ghz.
I mentioned my surprise at unboxing, these satellites are literally half the size of the previous generation (photo included.) Needless to say, my wife was thrilled about it, these units can be placed very unobtrusively in anyone's home. The inset connection plugs are also a nice feature.
I can't make a claim as to the specs on the box - 5,000 sq ft (I have 2) or 3 floor coverage (I have 2), all I can say is in my situation, the unit does exactly what it's supposed to do, and hasn't given me an issue to correct or think about. Given that these mesh units can easily double the price of this one, the Velop Micro 6 is something to consider.
I did get a giggle from their Planet Friendly blurb on the box - 65% recycled plastic; 65% recycled cardboard which is all well & good, but it's the last line that got me. "Returnable to Linksys for free for recycling, refresh or re-use after expiration of your warranty." Not exactly the language I would've chosen - seems to imply that I'll be looking for a replacement in a year. I'm sure that's not what they meant; I actually think this unit will serve my needs a bit longer than that.
Anyway, nice job, Linksys; I've been your customer for probably longer than 20 years at this point, and thanks for a product that is truly plug & play as advertised.

Installation was pretty easy. Unhook your existing router. Power off your modem for at least 3 minutes. Then power up the modem and wait about 5 minutes. Plug in and connect the new router and position the nodes. When the light is white then you are all set. Plug and play.
I was using an Arris mesh system and it worked very well all over our 3,000 sf house. Even in the farthest corners of our downstairs. The Linksys Velop didn’t have the same range. I positioned a node upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs everything was fine. Downstairs it lost range and there were buffering images on one side of the downstairs.
Apples to apples – I ran a speed test using my desktop. The old router was faster on the downloads and the new router was faster on the uploads. Not much difference on the downloads but the upload speed was about 40% faster on the Linksys.
We have a lot of products connected to our network and the Arris has handled that exceptionally well. The Linksys did too with the exception of the one side downstairs. Depending upon the size of your house and where you position your modem and router, the Linksys should work exceptionally well. We have always had a difficult area downstairs until the Arris. Adding another node to this router would probably solve that.
It worked well for gaming, movies and all of our connected devices.
No USB ports on the router. I wish more routers came with more ports so I don’t have to add a hub. The nodes size is small but you do have to have them out in the open.
The flat design of this router takes up more desk space. I will probably set it on a small shelf and move the modem too.

The Linksys Velop Micro 6 Mesh System was a great replacement for our older mesh system which was being pressed to the max with all our connected devices throughout my home. Overall, this is a great system with a few small glitches I am certain will be fixed with firmware/ software updates in the future.
Setup was easy - with a caveat. The system is essentially plug and play - just reboot your modem from your internet provider, plug in the Linksys Velop Micro 6 base station and let it load up. The reason I said there is a caveat - I am not sure if this is an error in the instruction guide or not, but the instructions state that the system will be up and running when the LED light on the top of both the base station and the nodes turns white. That was not my experience (see pictures). The base station and nodes went from a blinking white light, to blinking blue, to solid red - and then finally solid blue. Once showing sold blue, our internet was up and running. Took about 20 minutes to fully set everything up. I think the instructions may just need to be updated or the unit I have has a bug ... either way, it's up and running and FAST!
My only other issue is with the nodes (satellite units). On some of my devices, in particular iOS devices, the network often disappears as I move throughout my home. I have the main base station on the first level of my home, a node in the basement, and a node on the second floor. In particular, in the basement, my iOS devices lose connection sometimes temporarily and sometimes they can't find the network at all. However, on other devices like a Windows machine in the basement, the signal is strong and the speeds are fast.
I was a little confused when setting this Linksys Velop Micro 6 Mesh System up because there's no real instruction for how to make changes to the router in an app - only via a web browser. The browser-based settings and control are a little clunky and my security software doesn't like connecting to the webpage for the router - it tells me it's a risky site.
Overall, I would recommend the Linksys Velop Micro 6 Mesh System.

Great beginners Mesh router

For the last several weeks I’ve been using the Linksys Velop Micro 6 Mesh wifi router system. In comparison to my previous Wifi 6 Asus system, there are some solid benefits to the Micro 6 Mesh.
I really appreciated how easy it was to setup the three nodes. In fact, there wasn’t anything I needed to do. The main access point auto-magically found the other nodes and added them to my system. All I needed to do was have them nearby during the setup, then move them to their permanent spots afterward. Easy-peasy! And much easier than adding a mesh point or node to my Asus system. Linksys claims this is due to it’s use of AI, but whatever it is, it’s drop dead simple.
The appearance of the whole system is nice too. I mean, they aren’t works of art, but in terms of routers, these might as well be. Very unoffensive and unobtrusive is how I’d describe these.
I also appreciated the 2.5gpps WAN (input) port, though I would have appreciated another 2.5gbps port for LAN use too (connecting a server PC, in my case). The four additional gigabit ports are sufficient in number, but I wish they were the faster versions in 2024. I also wonder how many people have a modem with a 2.5gbps output. I know they exist, but I doubt there’s too many takers yet.
The Linksys router forces you to download their app during setup and create a Linksys account. The app acts as your primary settings ‘hub’. During setup, you’ll have the chance to change the network name and password, and for most, I’m guessing that’s enough. After setup, you’re able to access a few more router options via logging into the router via PC web browser.
Judging by the available options in the Linksys router, they definitely made this system for the beginner. Yes, you can setup static links to your connected devices and open various port into your network. Great. But missing are things like transmit power options and link aggregation. Yes, these are settings for the network-minded folks, but in 2023 they’re settings I’ve come to expect.
I guess my overall rank of this router system is based on the level of network know-how you expect. For example, if you’re a beginner and don’t expect much from your router, then this is a really great mesh system that will handle your gigabit speeds. However, if you’re a techy person and like to fiddle with settings, you might be disappointed in this offering, AI or not.
I’m going to rate the system a solid 4-stars for its simplicity and ability to handle the speeds most people are currently using (gigabit or less).

When the product arrived I was definitely shocked by the size of the mesh nodes. They are literally about the size of a soda can! The main base unit is inoffensive and definitely can blend into any decor. I think that design-wise, Linksys did a good job to create a product that doesn't look like a robotic spider-crab that fell on its back!
Another nice thing is that the nodes run off of USB-C, so while they do come with their very own power supplies, it is good to know that they are using a standardized power connector, should something go wrong. The packaging itself is made out of recycled material, so it is also nice to know that sustainability was in mind.
Upon setting it up, I used the web browser instead of the app, and found the UI to be very easy to understand and navigate. I appreciate that it did prompt me about a Night Mode, where the LEDs on the top of the base unit / nodes would go off during the night. Performance wise, everything seemed to work well within my house in terms of speed and range.
All in all, it is a good system, but the only reason why I took one star off is that despite having a night mode and being designed for a lifestyle look, there are still link/activity LEDs on the rear Ethernet ports that cannot be disabled, like some other brands, and even with night mode. That means that if you have the base unit placed near a wall, at night you will see those lights blinking and it can be distracting.

My old Linksys mesh router stopped working at 8 one evening, thankfully BB had this in stock. Description said easy setup, but figured with the satellite units I'd still have quite a bit of screwing around to get back up and running, thankfully, the setup couldn't have been easier. Waiting for all units to power up took the longest, simply logged into the router, changed the network name to match my old name and password and all of my devices were back up and running within 10 minutes of getting home. So far, I've been pleased with the performance and have had no interruptions with online games. Highly reccommend.

This is on the cheaper end for a mesh system. I set this up in my partners parents house as their router is in the basement surrounded by concrete. I wasn't able to run cable, ethernet over powerline was shotty at best, and their old cable lines were cut so MOCA wasn't an option.
It was able to push internet on the second floor with great speeds and connectivity with ease. The third floor was a bit tricker due to how far it needed to go. Honestly I paired this with a wifi extender and now we get 400+mb/s over wifi on the third floor. With just the mesh system, it was 150 and EOP was 10.
For the price + an extender, its not comparable to others. Im sure there are other options that might have gotten us there without an extender. I probably could have moved the mesh router closer, but i already had an old extender that i got 7 years ago for about $50 and it added the little extra that we wanted.
Setup was done in 15 minutes.
I've seen this recently under $150 and I think its worth it. Please note that the nodes do not have an ethernet port to hard wire to.

This router provided an awesome boost over the Google Wifi mesh system I had installed a while back. I recently upgraded to 1Gbps fiber and was still only getting 10-20Mbps through wifi.
As soon as I installed the AX3000, my speed jumped to reliably over 100Mpbs.
I had quite a bit of trouble with the installation. The instructions were incorrect about the login password for installation, so I had to search a bit to find that info. Once the router was up and running, I ended up having to factory reset the extenders, which was laborious, as their reset cycle is several minutes.
Once I had everything set, I was easily able to move the extenders and cover my whole house and yard with just the 3 access points instead of the 6AP setup I had before.
