We recently bought two of these Magellan Roadmate GPS's. Within a few months, I noticed the case starting to separate on the one in my vehicle and saw that there was a component inside that appeared to be expanding from the heat. I called the Magellan warranty line as it got worse. They asked that I send them a picture, which I did by email. They indicated that I'd hear back from them and that the unit would be replaced. I never got a reply at all. After it became apparent that they would not honor the warranty (it was inside of the year warranty on the unit), I purchased a Garmin DriveSmart 60LMT and it really is an awesome GPS. Don't waste your money on this product. The warranty is worthless and both units have now malfunctioned to the point that they are basically useless. I will never buy another Magellan GPS.

The best choice for me.

I didn't just want a navigation unit. I wanted one that could multi-task-with a dash cam and some driving safety features. The Magellan 6630 almost completely satisfies my requirements. I've had the unit for about 3 weeks now, and have a good feel for how it performs. It's not great at all three major functions, but it's really the only good choice for a multi-tasker. There's really only one competitor to this unit, the Garmin Nuvi 50lmt. I tried that first, but ultimately chose the Magellan. Here's a summary as to why:
1.Navigation:
Magellan: Grade=B. Basic, without a lot of bells and whistles. Accurate and intuitive. More than adequate for my needs.
Garmin: Grade=A+. Clearly a top-of-the-line navigator. More than I need.
2. Dash Cam:
Magellan: Grade=B-. The video quality is so-so, and you can't use other features while using the camera. Adequate for my needs.
Garmin: Grade=B+. Slightly better.
3. Safety Features:
Magellan: Grade=A. The lane departure and forward collision warning systems actually work very well compared to the Garmin and to the Thinkware 750 Dash Cam. The warnings are accurate and consistent, and actually help me drive more safely.
Garmin: Grade=F. The safety features were useless-inconsistent, inaccurate, annoying. Forget about it!
4. Price:
Magellan: on sale for $149-to me, a phenomenal value
Garmin: $229-for this amount, you might as well by a less expensive Garmin and a dedicated dash cam.
Summary: If you don't mind compromising a little on features, the Magellan is the only choice. One last thing. Keep a paperclip handy because the Magellan does crash once in a while. Simply push the reset button, and you're back on the road.

Magellan dropped the Ball on this one

okay, I took out all of my review because it kept telling me I am using inappropriate language. There was not one word that was "Inappropriate" unless Best Buys just doesn't allow bad reviews of a product. This product is BAD. Cheap plastic mount that has to be glued to the windshield. No suction mount included. Also besides the Car charger there is no other way to charge the unit since they didn't include a charger or even a cable to plug into the unit so you can charge it from your computer or phone charger. It takes a Mini (Not Micro) USB cable in order to charge it. Anyway, I am taking this unit back to Best Buys. It just feels cheap and at this price point it should have at least had a decent mount and a charger included.

Ted's Magelland Review

I purchased the Magellan at a sale price, which would have been excellent if the GPS performed at all. There was NOT a charger and charge cord for the GPS, so it could be charged. It stated on a stick on cover on the top of the GPS to charge is for 4 hours. I had a charge cable from a prior GPS, and, I plugged it into an USB port, on my computer, to charge overnight. It was fully charged in the morning. After setting it up, and repeatedly putting my log in at least 8 times, it finally registered the GPS. Yes, I was very careful putting the codes in. Finally, it tried to update the maps. It stated there was not enough time left to download an update for maps. It is IMPOSSIBLE TO CONNECT THROUGH A COMPUTER TO DOWNLOAD THE MAPS. it will only connect via WFI to the website. Problem here the battery is being discharged, while you try to download the maps. The possible outcome, is not enough time left from the battery to download updated maps.
To try the GPS, I drove away from home, to check the performance of the GPS. The voice was not clear as it should be. The voice quality was more of a raspy voice, and the volume could not be increased enough where it could be heard clearly, with a low volume radio, and normal road noise from driving. The raspy, not real clear voice, adds to the problem. Upon leaving an address, I drove to, I put my home address in. Ok until I was approximately 450 feet away from the house. Just prior it said destination ahead 450 feet. When I was getting closer, approximately 350 feet it said to go to the next corner, and turn right. It took me by my home address, via going around a block over, with right turns until I was back on the road to the house. The same situation occurred again. I would being driving by the house forever, if I followed the instructions. Obviously this will probably apply to any address. Very likely. I had enough. I did not try it any more. There was not any point, in literally going around in circles in a non stop loop, bypassing the destination without end.
The Magellan was entirely without value of any kind. I would not keep it if it was for free. It serves absolutely NO purpose. Unfortunately I have to return the GPS to Best Buy.
To recap from the start, Magellan uses cost cutting short cuts, by not even supplying a charger and cord which is required to even get started. Then it is all downhill from there. Just how is it going to be charged for 4 hours on short trips? And then there is a map update needed with the possibility of the battery running out before the update is completed. I would not recommend this Magellan to anyone.

Defective out of the box

Was excited about this at first but then reality set in. Ran initial software updates as instructed. Map updates said it could take several hours so I left it running overnight. When I checked it the next day, it was still running map updates. Upon closer study, I realized that the map updates were failing and that the unit re-tried continuously...in a loop. Battery life is non-existent. Went from 100% to 16% in two minutes...no exaggeration. LDW and Crash Avoidance warnings are so OFF, even after calibration. Touch screen is unresponsive, especially when running on battery only. Tried support but 48 hours went by without a response. Returning this to the store TODAY. Should have stuck with CR ratings and gone with a Garmin. Will not stray again!

Good GPS, Dash Cam Not So Much...

I went to Best Buy to purchase a dash cam, but when I saw this combo I decided to get it instead since I have had my old GPS for several years. The GPS worked good. I was surprised when it would even tell me things like, "In .5 miles turn right onto hwy 70 at the BP station." My old one never mentioned the name of stores! The dash cam, however, worked for about a day without any problems. Then every time I turned it on I got an SD card error message. I would take out the card and reinsert it and the error message would go away, but it would do nothing when I tried to record a video. It would allow me to take a picture, but when I tried to save it I got an error message. Also, this thing is pretty big and didn't want to stay stuck to my windshield. We returned it for a refund. Customer service was awesome, though. They deserve 5 stars!

I was not aware that the touch screen was the oldest resistive technology. It turned out to be really irritating. I had to use my thumbs (other fingers would not work) and press really hard to make any selection...anyway, I'm going to return this item.

Received, performed a built-in software update, and the unit will no longer register inputs. Called support who says they will only send me a different (lesser) and refurbished model, not even the same model. They said they can contact me when they have a refurbished model to exchange but will not send me a new one. To sum up: I have a broken model out of the box but they won't fix or replace it. Never what I would expect.

I could not register this device to get map updates. It kept saying "unknown error try again later". Tried calling technical support but it just says to send them an email and hangs up. Tried sending email, but this item was not listed an option. Returning this device to the nearest store today.
