Fantastic Value and Great Performance

Now that I've had this AV receiver for a couple of weeks I've been able to set up and use most of its features. This is simply an outstanding AV receiver at any price. Some will say it is "low end." Well, on my budget it's high end, and I couldn't be more pleased with it. I use home theater with a Blue Ray DVD player, Cable TV, CD, Tuner radio, and HEOS. All of the inputs work perfectly and the signals are sent to the speakers correctly without a lot of fiddling around. There is a really nice control function that optimizes the speaker outputs for movies, music, games, and "pure" (like sports on TV). It is convenient and simple. Set-up and functioning with our WiFi and online service are straightforward. Especially noteworthy is how well this AVR works with my (new) Marantz CD6006 CD player. It is more than adequate for pairing with this semi-high-end component. I won't pretend to have golden ears or to be very sophisticated with this stuff, but I will say that what I'm hearing out of this AVR is simply the best sound I can ever expect given the limitations of my speaker system. Highly recommended!

This receiver is a bit like a teacher who piles on the homework the first few days of class, then ends up being a good and reasonable person in the long run. When you first take this out of the box, don't even think about plugging in speakers and listening to your new toy. Ain't gonna happen. You MUST have a monitor/TV plugged in, and from what I can tell, you MUST run through their not-so-brief setup routine before it will so much as peep at you. Sigh. Sure, you do want to (eventually) set it up correctly, and modify the setup from time to time, but this is the first receiver I've owned that made the initial interface so daunting. And of course the look of the setup screen display seems more reminiscent of a 1980's TRS-80 than a high tech 2018 product on a 4K television. But the setup process does work.
OK, so you bite the bullet and do what you have to do on the setup. Fortunately, life starts getting more pleasant. There are lots of input options, the remote is reasonably laid out, the display on the front panel of the receiver is useful, and the sound is lovely. Lovely. Smooth and effortless. I'm using a 5.1 speaker set from Aperion Audio and the combination seems well-matched.
I have had a few unpleasant musical moments with Bluetooth quality, but I don't believe I should put all the blame on the receiver. I think Bluetooth technology has inherent limitations that perhaps seem more obvious when in the context of a fine home audio system, instead of a little battery-operated speaker at a barbecue. For all of that, though, I wouldn't dream of omitting Bluetooth functionality. I have some hi-res music on my iPhone, played through an Onkyo app, that sounds GLORIOUS on this system even with Bluetooth. Most of the time.
The receiver seems to connect to WiFi with no problems. The "internet radio" works as promised, although with unimpressive sound quality (again, probably due to the source more than the receiver). Currently I'm only using (good, fast) WiFi, not a direct internet cable, but I doubt that would change anything. A CD player and a turntable both worked just fine as well.
The provided microphone and associated tweaking mechanism for my specific listening space gave me no errors, although I couldn't really hear any difference when it was done. I bought this system mostly for music, but the handful of DVD, Amazon Fire TV, and movie sources I've experienced seem fine also. The only part I haven't finished setting up, and which I REALLY hope works well, is a NAS storage device where I can put my existing music and hopefully access it electronically without losing quality. If that works as promised, I'll be a happy camper.

Great 5.1 Channel HDMI Switching Receiver

I recently upgraded my living room setup to include a new UHD OLED TV Panel and a new Panasonic UHD Blu-Ray Player. The receiver that I had at the time was supposed to be compatible with all 4k copy protection protocols so I figured there's be no problem just passing it all through it. But even after upgrading to high speed HDMI cables I was still experiencing signal drop outs from most of my sources (including the UHD Blu-Ray Player, an AppleTV 4k and a Uverse DVR). I knew the issue was the receiver because if I connected each source to the TV directly the problems went away.
So I needed to replace the receiver. Since I already had a much more capable Marantz AVR in my media room upstairs that has been incredibly dependable, I decided to give this low profile 5.1 channel receiver a try. I'm sure glad I did.
Since I had a recent model Marantz AVR already, setting this one up was a breeze. I know the interface is not very elegant, but it is very intuitive and simple to navigate. The on board Audyssey sound setup and room calibration system worked like a champ. I was up and running within 20 minutes of opening the box.
All of the issues I had with the prior receiver vanished with this unit. It switches every one of my sources flawlessly without HDMI handshake or copy protection issues. I realize it is pretty low power for a big system, but it more than handles the needs of my Def Tech bipolar speakers for movies and sports.
So bottom line... I am very happy with this receiver. I'd highly recommend that you consider it as a strong contender within a very short list of affordable compnents that can cleanly switch 4k sources.

This is an upgrade from a 10 year old system. Huge quality difference and simpler to use. Also a much smaller footprint.

Fantastic Receiver for the Price!

This is a wonderful receiver for the price as you really get a ton for the money. However, there can only be one set of front speakers (no A/B selection) and here is the biggest thing: You HAVE to hook it up to a tv to set it up. It drove me crazy to have to go all through that for a receiver. They should change that.

This is the second Marantz receiver I've owned. I upgraded from an NR1403 to this receiver. It fits perfectly in my Ikea TV cabinet. The Internet Radio and HEOS work great!
