For what you're getting I think there are 2 better options, save up a few bucks and get the XT B100 or get the SVS Ultra Evolution at the same price as these B10. They are simply not priced appropriately for what you get. Not bad just better options out there. Attached photo is the B10 next to the SVS Ultra Evolution

What a nice little speaker. Got these and setup in my theater for review. Notes on my setup - I run a pre/pro config Anthem AVM70 Emotiva 11-channel XPA Gen3 amp 2x SVS PB4000 subwoofers Fit and finish - i had opted for the walnut but received the piano Gloss. The finish was perfect. The speaker came boxed, in foam surround, plastic cover, then cloth cover. White glove! Finish was very good at the price point - i found no blemishes and all edges and corners were perfect. They had a nice mirror image finish with very minimal orange peel. Can't get better than this look to have out on proud display. Sound - I really like the sound of this speaker. Super clean highs and good mid range. There is some lacking on the low end. You would want to supplement with a matching Subwoofer to cover the entire sound spectrum. The Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion® tweeter with custom waveguide really shined. Providing a nice smooth projection. Over all, i did not have much sound tiring from them, nice clean sound and able to keep up with my large room. They area very present speaker, but they never over extended. I turned up to reference and they just hummed along with no distortion. They like to sing! I would have preferred a better footing. While the one provided are adjustable they were plastic. In this price category a better foot with for isolation would be nice. The woofer never caused any shift in the speaker but this is just my audiophile OCD coming out on this.

***TLDR:*** What an excellent sound from a quality product. I'm more than happy, especially considering the size and price. MartinLogan have done something which is actually hard to do: impress me. ***STANDOUT FEATURES:*** Honestly, the standout features here are going to be the looks. I went for Gloss Black (with a satin front) to match my setup, but the Walnut option, with bronze speaker surround, is highly attractive. In addition to looks, these have exceptional sound and simple 4-hole mounting, should you choose your own option or the MartinLogan "STAND25", which comes in colors to match your selection of either Gloss Black, Walnut or Satin White. ***LOWS:*** One should not expect ultimate bass with these bookshelf units, as they only have 5.5" woofers. Though they do have ported rears, they were absolutely intended to be used in combination with a subwoofer to adequately hit those 20-80 Hz frequencies. Rated officially at 56 Hz, sound drops off quite substantially at about 90 hz. Adjusting levels to compensate can only help a small amount before interfering in the clarity of the mids. The more frequencies you demand of any single speaker, the more convoluted the vibration - sometimes canceling out sounds you could otherwise hear clearly. Get a decent 8" or larger sub to go with these and keep their cutoff around 100 to enjoy a full and clear sound stage. ***MIDS:*** The density and heavy construction of the cabinets keep mids neutral. No unwanted reverberation/muddying. This makes speaking voices flat, so EQ up. ***HIGHS:*** This is where these speakers shine. The Gen 2 "Folded Motion" tweeter design recreates guitar (in particular) - with preserved drum and vocal separation - in the most clear way I have ever heard. I have been around nice speakers for over 20 years and these have me hearing new things in all my favorite guitar-laden songs. Martin Logan's choice to put the crossover at 2300hz was exactly right. ***DOWNSIDE:*** The gloss black is no joke. These can get very dusty, very quickly. ***CONCLUSION:*** If you have a love for guitar, these will make you happy. Go for it.

The Motion B10 Bookshelf speakers are my first Martin Logan product, though I’ve owned and used a number of other audiophile quality bookshelf speakers in the past. These by far are some of the most impressive that I’ve tried in this form factor, and they are a perfect fit for our 400 sq ft living room where we have our home theater setup. The speakers themselves are compact, measuring 7”W, 9.75”D, and 12.5”H, but hefty at nearly 14.5 lbs a piece. It comes in 3 color variations, gloss black, satin white, and walnut. If you get the gloss black like I did, be aware that fingerprints and dust will show up on it readily as will micro-scratches from buffing or cleaning it with anything other than the softest of microfiber cloths. That said, each unit comes with a fitted spandex dust cover to protect and keep your speakers looking pristine; the mid-drivers have snap-on/removable grilles to protect the cones. Also included are four metal screw-on feet for isolating it from the surface it sits on, and these can also be used to secure the speakers to the platform of a floor stand (like MartinLogan’s custom-drilled STAND25, sold separately). At the back of the speaker, the 5-way binding posts have large clear acrylic caps allowing you to direct-wire these to your AV receiver or use another connection type like banana plugs for convenience and reliability. I tried it both ways with 12 gauge speaker wires and the sound quality was identical. The frequency response of the speakers is rated at 56-25k Hz, and these speakers do a great job at reproducing clear, crisp trebles with little distortion thanks to the Gen2 folded motion tweeter (FMT). Vocals and upper registers are quick, clean, and pleasingly bright. The FMT is set within a waveguide which enables sound dispersion 90° horizontally and vertically resulting in a wide, three-dimensional soundstage that is adaptable to a variety of room configurations, including our open floorplan living room. The 5.5” mid-range driver delivers full, well-rounded mid-ranges, while the rear-firing reflex port produces some upper bass tones though leaves something to be desired in lower ranges. That’s not unexpected though, given that most bookshelf speakers perform best when used as mains in a larger system or alongside a subwoofer, and these are no exception. Once we added in a sub to our setup, this filled in that extra dimension and stepped up our listening experience with the B10s. If you don’t have a subwoofer, just be sure to place the speakers close enough to a wall (but not too close) in order to allow what bass does emit from the reflex port to reflect back into the room. We tried the speakers hooked up to our TV and movie projector via optical input, and when watching films and TV shows, the experience with these speakers is immersive and enjoyable producing clear dialogue and accurate sound placement. Even at higher volumes there’s no perceptible distortion, crunchiness, or muddiness. Since our receiver is network connected, we can play music through the speakers from all of our favorite streaming music services, and it just sounds awesome. Overall, no matter what we’re listening to these speakers sound pretty great, even at moderate off angles, and they look super slick in our home theater setup to boot.

I've owned a lot of good speakers over the years. Axiom, Bowers & Wilkins, Mirage, JBL and even Klipsch. I've never had the opportunity to listen to any from Martin Logan, so I was very anxious to hear how they sound. Martin Logan has been around for forty years now and they've been a respected brand for pretty much the entire time. It's easy to see that reputation in action when you listen to the Motion Series B10 bookshelf speakers. There are some unique features of these speakers that I needed to find out more about. Probably the most obvious impression that anyone has of a pair of speakers is how they look. I would have really loved to see the walnut finish, but the black are really pretty great looking. Honestly, the photos just don't do them justice. It's not just black, it's a piano black, high gloss finish. This finish is on everything except the front panel. The mid/bass grill makes it a truly signature ML speaker. I like the look of the grills. I generally run my speakers with the grills removed because I love to see fine speakers in all their glory. Usually, grills cover up all the beautiful engineering and style, but by just covering the mid/bass speaker, you still get that grill-less feel. The drivers themselves scream luxury. You know this is not going to be your routine listening experience when you see the Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion Tweeters. These are not your typical tweeters. They've been around for a long time in different variations but ML has put their own spin on them with larger magnets. This helps to improve the performance by lowering distortion. More and more speaker companies are adopting this type of tweeter design for a number of reasons but for the B10s, the choice is obvious. They have a very natural sound to them, and they do it in a way that allows the listener to not have to sit dead center to hear it. The mid/bass driver has a woven fiberglass cone. The bass and mid bass is tight and very realistic sounding. I was able to listen to these speakers on two of my sound systems. One in my office without a subwoofer and one on my basement system that has a subwoofer. I can say without a doubt, I prefer using a subwoofer with the B10s. As good as they are, they are still bookshelf sized cabinets and really benefit from the low end a subwoofer provides. With the sound pressure levels being handled by a subwoofer, these speakers really shine. The first thing I noticed when listening to music was the larger than expected sound stage. It sounds like the speakers are much farther apart than I had them placed. You feel as if the sound is coming from a wider, deeper room. In general, I could easily listen to these speakers for hours without noticing any ear strain whatsoever. They are, in a word... smooth. They have a very natural sound and don't “color” the sound you hear. I listen to music with a subwoofer and flat EQ settings, but with a lot of other brands of speakers, after a time, my ears literally get tired. That's usually because of harsh or tinny tweeters and a crossover that just doesn't produce smooth transitions between speakers. I won't say I'm able to hear and pick out a good crossover from a poor one, but when everything is properly dialed in, like it is with the B10s, it's easy to start understanding the difference. All these special features combine to make a speaker that is crystal clear and accurate. If you're looking for the deep thumping bass, you'll benefit from pairing these guys with a separate subwoofer. Not that they aren't punchy, they are, but they're punchy in the mid bass area instead of the sub bass area. I should also mention that there is a bass port on the rear of the cabinet. This will also help to provide even more punch with experimental placement of the speakers. I wasn't able to put them on a shelf or in an enclosed bookshelf, but I bet they would sound even more punchy if you don't have a subwoofer to pair them with. I put in several movies to see how these guys played with other non Martin Logan speakers and I was not disappointed. I have an Axiom center channel and Klipsh rears. I found the B10s performed similarly to the music listening I did. Smooth, natural sound that blended well with the rest of the speakers. I will say that after using them in my office system with an Onkyo 900 series receiver and a smaller room environment, the bass response was better. Still punchy mid/bass but because of the smaller room, it was a fuller sound. I had these guys on stands, but again, if they were put in a bookshelf they would probably perform even better for those wanting the low end. At 14.5 pounds each, they are hefty for their size. They come with feet that screw into existing holes in the bottom of the cabinets. One thing I wasn't too keen on was the fact that the feet are plastic, which seems like an odd choice to me. Since in my listening tests, I placed them on top of my basement tower speakers, and in my office I put them on my existing speaker stands, I replaced the plastic feet with small rubber bumpers. I didn't want the speakers to vibrate and slide off their perches. The binding posts are very nice and are, for lack of a better description, oblong in shape. This allows you to crank down sufficiently on bare wires (although I used banana plugs with mine). I'm very glad I was able to test out the Martin Logan B10s. I really like the sound of them. The smooth transition from the drivers and the wide natural sound was a very positive experience. I welcome the chance to review some floor standers from them. If I'm this impressed with bookshelves speakers I can only imagine the sound of the towers. Very nice job Martin Logan!

Upon unboxing the Martin Logan B10’s I was immediately in awe of the build quality and modern look of these speakers. The glossy piano black finish wraps all the way around the enclosure, including the back and bottom. The five-way binding posts eschew the traditional black and red color scheme for custom crystal-clear caps. The glossy black is complemented with a fingerprint resistant satin matte black finish on the front. Behind the speaker grille is a 5.5” woven fiberglass midrange cone. All in all, it is a very slick high-quality package. Then there’s the sound. Pair these with a good amp and you are in for a treat. I'm a movie buff so I mostly listen to movie soundtracks while working. I really enjoyed listening to Gustavo Santaolla’s The Last of Us soundtrack from the new HBO series on these speakers. The finger picking on the guitar of the main title and the cymbal crescendos seemed accurately reproduced and so smooth on the Gen2 tweeters. Overall, I heard a clear natural sound with no distortion that I could discern and the crossover blending well between the highs and mids on everything I listened to. Quite impressive for the size and they will easily fill a midsized room like my office. Bass response is respectable, but these are still bookshelves, and do not offer any low frequency drivers in the enclosure. The lowest frequency they can hit is 56hz so pairing it with a subwoofer will complete the package especially if you listen to synthetic music like rap, hip-hop, techno, etc. The glossy tops will show dust almost immediately. ML does include some speaker covers (and stickers!) in the box if you don’t use them often would recommend putting the covers on. Pros: Stylish and Modern Excellent Sound Quality Can be placed on stand High Quality Materials Included Dust Covers Cons: May want a sub Overall – these are an excellent value for the quality of the build and sound that you will get. I really wish I had the bigger floor standing units from this collection to go into my home theater room!

Excellent Bookshelf Speakers for Audio and Movies

The Martin Logan motion bookshelf speakers offer excellent sound in a small compact bookshelf form factor. ML speakers have always felt and looked premium and the presentation on the Motion series is no different with the piano glass glossy finish and the contrasting grill and Midbass driver offering a premium appearance. The glossy finish does a great job of resisting fingerprints although I could see over time they will get some fine lines and dust. They do come with nice mesh bags to cover, store, transport and even wipe them down with. In terms of audio, I was planning to use these in a 5.1.2 Atmos set-up with my Yamaha receiver, but decided to go ahead and connect them to my Sonos Amp first to get them up and running quickly and the sound far exceeded the B&W speakers I had previously used with the Sonos. Mid-range was clear and confident and both audio lyrics, instrumentals and movie dialogue had excellent reproduction and projection with the Gen2 Folded Motion Tweeters. The single Midbass driver performed valiantly, however, I did find it lacked a bit of rumble for LFE for movies and music with deep bass tracks, so I did add a subwoofer to the Sonos amp to supplement. MLogan offers some higher end Motion speakers with 2 and 3 Midbass drivers that may not need a woofer to get a full bass range but they are also much larger and pricier than these bookshelf speakers. Ultimately, I decided to just stick to the 2.1 Sonos speaker set-up for these speakers since I was planning to use them in the basement in a smaller viewing area where full surround sound would probably be overkill. I mainly use the basement TV for 3D movie nostalgia and if we want to let the kids play or watch TV down there. The MLogan speakers are fantastic for music and they also performed brilliantly for movies and dialogue so I was more than happy with them, and they look great and don't take up a lot of room in the space. The Motion bookshelf speakers can be stand mounted with 4 hold standoffs, however, the stands are $200 each. Given how close that puts them to some ML freestanding options with Bass drivers, that may be another consideration and way to go if you want something that will stand on their own. These are definitely a great set of speakers with a bright soundstage and excellent voice reproduction, but lack some LFE from a dedicated bass driver. Still, I don't think you can go wrong in a smaller space, whether that is a smaller home viewing area, a den or office, or even a dining room.

Big, natural sound from a small bookshelf speaker

Normally when I review audio gear, I "stick with the script" and play through a number of demo tracks to get a feel for how a speaker sounds fresh out of the box, and then revisit those tracks after a few days of listening have broken in the speakers a little. With the MartinLogan Motion B10s, I messed up a bit. I hooked them up, and accidentally played a song that isn't normally on my demo list as the first track. And I totally fell in love. That accidental first track was Bon Iver - "Holocene" , for the record. The review pretty much wrote itself as soon as the opening guitar loop started and by the time the atmospherics began 10 seconds later I was already hooked. These speakers are just so incredibly efficient and HUGE sounding in a package that is small even by 5.5" bookshelf standards. Holocene was actually played via Youtube Music/Chromecast Audio which makes me even more impressed with the sound of these B10s. I've found with some speakers that lossy compression can lead to a harsh sound on the highs that gets tiring. I haven't experienced that with the B10s. Alright, for objectivity, my review setup is: -Onkyo TX-SR705 -SoundblasterX G5 USB soundcard connected via SPDIF -Pioneer DV49AV DVD-Audio/SACD player connected via HDMI -Chromecast Audio connected via SPDIF -Polk RM series 12" subwoofer -speakers sitting on acoustic foam pads at my desk Demo 1: Avett Brothers - "Shame" (FLAC) - I use this track because it starts off with just vocals in a studio that has a bit of reverb, then gradually adds the banjo and guitar, and finally the upright bass before bringing in the chorus of voices a minute later. The Motion B10s claim to have a range down to 56hz, and my non scientific testing seems to confirm that as accurate. Switching from "Pure Audio" to "Stereo" mode on my Onkyo 705 adds in the subwoofer and fills in the lowest notes that an upright bass can put out. With or without the subwoofer, the B10s sound amazing with this track. Directionality is very wide - the sound stage is just universally in front of me, even if I am not sitting perfectly in the "sweet spot." They handle the roll off at the lowest end of their range very well. Highs are beautiful and clear. The sound in general is very "natural." I do not feel like the speakers are coloring the music at all - this is the first time I've ever critically auditioned speakers and felt "this is just how it's supposed to sound." Demo 2: Metallica - "Enter Sandman" (DVD-Audio) - Here I did not try to push the speakers to their limit without the subwoofer, and just enjoyed the sound of the iconic intro to this metal track. Again, I am struck by how natural the B10s sound. I have been using this track to demo speakers for almost 20 years and I don't think I've ever had this same sensation on a first listen with new speakers. It just sounds the way it's supposed to sound. It doesn't feel like the speakers are adding their own flavor to any sounds. They just sound "right." Demo 3: Miles Davis - "So What" (SACD) - I am using the Pure Audio mode of my receiver to let these speakers run without the subwoofer at first. Again, I'm really impressed with the bass handling of these speakers for a 5" bookshelf unit. I've found that some speakers can be a little harsh with the trumpet and saxophone on this track and again I'm not fatigued by the sound from the B10s at all. I just want to keep listening. I've had the speakers for about a week now, and they have only gotten more mellow and natural as they've worn in a bit. I sit at my desk for 8 hours a day, and I could sit and listen to these for all of that time without fatigue if I was able to skip meetings. I was tempted to move them to a more "prestigious" location in my home after I did my demo listening, but I realized I listen to this setup more than anywhere else in the house. Why not keep them to myself? Huge recommendation to treat yourself, too.

I Now Believe in the MartinLogan Sound

I have a variety of high end speakers from bookshelf to high end sound equipment. I have also used a variety of high end equipment over the years and in my prior profession. However, this is my first set of MartinLogans I may have used a pair in the past but I do not recall. The unboxing was awesome. Very well packaged for those who are worried about your speakers being shipped. The speakers are secured with a dust cover (that you can keep using), with some more packing material and bags to keep unwanted shipping debrie out of your speakers and also protect that finish of your speakers. I have the black gloss so it was nice taking them out of the packaging without a scratch. I also love the dust covers… Everyone will know whats under them with the MartinLogan logo on them. I also loved how the foot caps/screws came in there own boxes with logo stickers and all. I believe you can also use the included screw caps to mount the speakers on the available MartinLogan speaker stands if not they screw into the bottom of your speakers to protect the bottom of them from rubbing on the surface you set them on. A quick note of my existing setup which I will use for these speakers with: My system includes a Sony STR-DH710, a Bluetooth receiver (5.0), and I have a turntable. In my opinion the perfect setup for my “office” audio needs. I have the ability for a sub with my receiver but I had no need with these B10s. The B10s 5.5” woofers with rears The MartinLogan Motion B10s are a great choice if you want to listen to your tunes in just the right way. I have played a variety of songs and I just can’t stop listening. The Eagles, Glen Campbell picking at his guitar, Elvis’s comeback album (68' NBC Special), Chicago, and my boy Frank Sinatra. I was constantly in amazement. I compared the MartinLogan’s with my high end SONOS system that I paid over $1,600 for and these two bookshelf speakers blew that system away. The Highs? The Mids? The Lows? Just sweet harmony. The folded motion tweeters will catch any audiophiles eyes as they will know they are not your average bear's speakers. Let me tell you when those tweeters tweet... they tweet their souls out. The tweeters fill my room from all angles of my office. Sometimes I just have to stand in front of them though. Man when Elvis's Trouble and If I can Dream songs came on the hairs on my arms stood up. I put my dust covers on after every use. I don’t care if its an extra step as they look great with them on and help protect them from dust. Plus that black gloss is so shiny that you need to keep them safe but its worth it because when I take the dust cover off my mouth drops. FYI these speakers are so good I was listening to them as I wrote this review.

I've been fortunate enough to listen to these ML Motion B10s, Elac Uni-Fi B52, Kef R3 Metas, and similar B&O speakers and really take them through their paces. ALL of those speakers were absolutely great, but I had to choose one brand that sounded best to my ears (not a YouTuber) to build a 5.1.2 system around. These Martin Logans, to my ears, just sounded a cut above; better clarity, soundstage, instrument separation, and detail. There was just something special about these B10s. The vocals sounded very realistic, any string instruments sounded sharp, any EDM music you could hear each loop or beat separated. I have these now in a 18'x19' room with 9' ceilings. Ended up pairing them with the motion MP and C speakers from the same lineup, and a pair of ML ceiling 6" speakers. Lastly I got a 10" RSL sub to supplement the lower end. I would not buy the B10's without a matching sub; although they sound great up until ~70hz, I just needed the lower end for music and movies. It also kinda blows my mind that these are "only" ML's 2nd lowest series of speakers. If you have more space and the extra funds, I'd highly recommend checking out the Motion XT line.

The MartinLogan Motion B10 is a compact bookshelf speaker that packs a punch in terms of audio quality. The speaker features high-performance drivers and an advanced crossover network that delivers crisp and clear sound across the entire frequency range. The build quality and design of the speaker are top-notch with a sleek black finish that blends well with any home décor. The MartinLogan Motion B10 is amazing for its ability to reproduce music with great accuracy and detail. The low-end response is impressive with a tight and punchy bass that does not overpower the rest of the frequencies. The midrange is natural and warm while the highs are well extended and airy, making for a very balanced and enjoyable listening experience. One of the standout features of the MartinLogan Motion B10 is its versatility. These are really good speakers but I'm writing a review as a Martin Logan 15i bookshelf owner. My placement is right up against a wall on a bookshelf. (Not the best place to put a speaker as they should be a foot off the wall at least. The Motion B10 is not an upgrade to the 15i speakers, more of side grade. The B10 has an upper frequency boost that's noticeable. Sometimes a boost like that people perceive as more detailed. This isn't more detailed to me than the 15i but definitely a boost in the treble that adds a crispness that some will love but some won't if you prefer a more neutral sound as found in the 15i speakers. I personally think the 15i speakers are preferable slightly. They have a bit more oomph in the mid bass but again, that's in my room against a wall. Maybe I would enjoy the B10s more pulled off the wall than the 15i speakers? So if you don't have the older Martin Logans to compare to, you can't go wrong with these. If you have the 15i speakers already, these are not really an upgrade sound wise. I also tested the Martin Logan XT B100 pair and those I would say are indeed an upgrade to the 15i speakers. I loved the sound of those but the problem with the XT B100s is that I ran into ear fatigue pretty quickly. I didn't tinker with them too much to knock back the treble because they were too big for my bookshelf space and I had to return them. The B10 speakers were not as fatiguing to my ears as the XT B100s. The 15i speakers aren't fatiguing at all and are great for long listening sessions.

Music should be an experience. It should transport you beyond the walls of your family room. With the right speakers and source material, your soul will be connected to that of the artist. I’ve purchased various bookshelf speakers over the years. They are, by nature, a compromise between size, weight, and technology. Fortunately, technology improves in the 10 years I tend to keep each set of speakers I get. MartinLogan is generally known for having a balanced sound, not to bright or punchy. Bowers & Willikins (B&W) has a similar reputation and the reason those were my last two sets. In fact, I was ready to get a new set of B&Ws when I walked into the store, but was encouraged to check out these B10’s as MartinLogan decided to outfit their entry level speakers with the same tweeter as in their highest end model. I’m glad I did as it sold me on spending a little more for much better sound. The 5 ½” bass drivers on this set will never get you as deep as a dedicated subwoofer, but ML knows that no one should expect that at this size and price point. Instead, they put their energy into making sure the mid tones are pure and smooth. The specs show this speaker can handle down to 50Hz, but I don’t drive them any lower than 80 Hz. For fun, I drove them at full range, when I first hooked them up, but it didn’t last. They have some extension, but when driven that low, you lose some definition in the mid range. The definition is why you should be buying these speakers as part of a system. While the speakers are excellent, they’ve showcased for me another challenge. I now have to find source material which allows the definition to shine through. Most of the music I listen to is from streaming services. There are a few tracks I’ve found in 192 khz / 24 bit. On those, I can hear aspects I never noticed before. For example, on Pink Floyd’s Shine on You Crazy Diamond I could hear the individual notes in the guitar chords. On Beethoven’s 7th symphony, the triangle rings through separate from the xylophone. Even more telling, after installing these for the first time my wife commented on how much better the music sounds. While she's enjoyed music, it hasn't had the same focus for her as it has for me. Knowing that she could tell the difference in the newer speakers proved to me that we definitely made the right choice!
