Bought this for my daughter who graduated from high school a year early. She can do everything she needs to do on it and then some. She has recommended it to several of her friends.

Best computer for me!!! It has everything I was looking for...touch screen, sleek design, a tablet and laptop in 1 and fast processing speed. It holds a lot of files and still let's me surf the internet with ease. I can use Adobe products (Indesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, etc.) with no problem. Best of all it does not overheat like my last computer.

My wife was in need of both a fairly robust laptop and a mid-range but larger screen tablet. After a lot of research this became the clear choice for her. It has more than enough laptop power she needs and can serve the light tablet duty as well. My history with Microsoft hardware goes back to their 1987 Mouse 2.0 (the original Dove bar) and they have always had excellent hardware, though sometimes drivers can be problematic. Their Sidewinder Pro is still one of the best joysticks I've ever owned. And their keyboards help save my wrists. The Surface Book is no exception. She only needed the i5 version, but it is still insanely fast and with the SSD, completely quiet. It has the sharpest and richest display I've seen on a laptop or tablet with such high resolution/pixel density that I actually back down the display resolution a bit to match my wife's preference. The keyboard is what you would expect from one of the top keyboard makers and while it has style, functionality is still first order. Weight and balance are good, which is important for a convertible. Battery life is phenomenal. In laptop mode, it will easily make it through a day with plenty to spare. Tablet mode has a shorter life, since most of the batteries are in the keyboard, still gave a solid 6-8 hours before auto-shutdown. And that brings us to the one reason this got 4 stars instead of 5 and the biggest quirk of the unit. When the tablet battery drops below 15%, the tablet will not unlatch from the keyboard and if you drain the tablet completely you will find yourself facing a *very* slow recharge. As in overnight charging before you can even get a power up. The solution seems to be the obvious, "Don't do that," of not letting the battery run down that far. That 's not very satisfactory in my opinion, though in their defense they do note that tablet mode is intended for lighter use and not an all day affair. Plus I do have a reputation for pushing hardware to its limit. What I'm doing is setting the power management to be 17 or 20 % to sleep when on battery to avoid the problem, though that too is a bit problematic on the Surface Book. If MS addresses this, then this is easily a 5-star tablet and the best in the field. Even so, I would still highly recommend this to anyone needing a fairly high powered, top quality laptop.

    Great Laptop for Students

My previous laptop is a 5 year old 15.6" Core i5 Dell that works great still, but I wanted to downgrade from a 15.6" screen since I use a secondary display anyways when doing work. All of the YouTubers said to stay away from the Core i5 version, but I settled on it due to the price factor (including the current Student Deals offer). My previous Dell had a Core i5 and it handled all of my applications including Photoshop just fine. I would have enjoyed having the Core i7 with the DGPU (dedicated graphics processing unit), but I realized that I do not game anymore anyways due to going to school and working full time. This convertible is much faster than my previous laptop, and Intel Core processors use multithreading, so it is "virtually" a quad core (pun intended). You'd be a fool or on a very tight budget to get a 1080p resolution display or lower. My older Dell has a 720p screen which makes reading online course materials or ebooks very challenging. What I enjoy being able to do is detach the screen, put it in reverse, and connect the Insignia USB-C adapter I have to to my display and USB mouse/keyboard. This brings the display closer to me on my desk, and there is no eye straining since texts and images have high clarity due to the high DPI. Over the past several years I have spent a pretty penny on digital comics, so undocking the display to in its entirety to read from Comixology is a joy. The 3:2 aspect ratio is perfect for reading these whether in single page portrait mode or dual page landscape mode. Also works well for ebooks. The bezels make it great for holding compared to say the small bezels of the XPS line. I just need a matte finish screen protector! The last thing is storage. At first I wanted the 512GB model, but I could not justify the extra grand. This cost difference is due to it only being offered with the i7 and DGPU performance base. I looked at how much space I used on my old Dell over the past 5 years, so in reality 256GB is fine for me. It's the future anyhow! My media is on the cloud. I can even just buy a large SD card (there is even a MicroSD adapter on Amazon that sits flush with the chassis). Cons • The PC ran hot for the fist hour (I checked the task manager and it was Windows Update Manager running in the background -- has not been an issue since Day 1) • Touch pad takes getting used to • Does not come with Surface Pen (will buy in the future if my use cases change) • The backlit keyboard is useless since the silver/grey colored keys have barely any contrast to the off white LED's used (save the 0.00001% battery and your display will light up your keyboard) • Pulling the tablet off requires a bit of effort Attachments: Images Blurred to protect copy written materials of Marvel

I bought this for my wife for Christmas and now I wish I got 2 of them. Set-up was a breeze, except for the first update which lasted about 45 minutes. It boots up so quickly, with the i5 processor and 8GB of RAM it handles everything that my wife needs it to do with ease. I added a 128GB Sandisk Fit flash drive so now it so more than enough HDD space for her. For the same price of the Surface Pro 4 with type cover and all, the Surface Book is more sturdy and easier to use in my opinion. Being able to use it as a stand alone tablet and as a notebook is a win-win for whoever uses it.

I am a huge fan of Microsoft Surface products. I started with the RT, then Pro 3 and Pro 4. The Surface Book was always on my wish list so when the Book 2 came out I bought it on the first day available and am not disappointed and can say I LOVE this device. I have only one negative I found, and I even passed it on to Microsoft. The slot for the reader card is not what I would have designed. When the card is in it sticks out about a half an inch. You run a risk of bumping and possibly braking it. The Pro 3 and 4 both had the Micro SD card hidden in the back and out of site, the Book really should have used the same concept. Other than that it is fast, the display is amazing, Videos look as clear and sharp as any HD TV I've ever seen. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a light fast Tablet/Laptop!

I returned a Mac Book Pro and bought a Surface Book 2 instead. The Mac Book Pro is more of a toy and I needed a work horse. I am extremely impressed with the Surface Book 2. I love the touch screen, resolution and performance. Runs cool even though it doesn't have a fan, which also keeps it quiet. The good battery life between charges is very good and the removable tablet is way better than a two in 1 that folds over. My model has the I5 processer, 8MB ram and 256 SSD storage. In my opinion anything less is not enough and anything more is overkill unless you're a gamer, which I am not.

I bought this to replace my wife's current surface pro 2. I had considered getting her an iPad or other tablet as well but ultimately chose the surface book due to its versatility. Having a full keyboard is a definite plus for when she uses it for her work. The screen is extremely nice which is boosted by the fact that it can be positioned just about any way you want it. It still blows my mind when you disconnect the screen to go from laptop to tablet mode. The screen/tablet portion feels lighter than it should for its size and it still retains the power of a full PC. I did debate taking off a star for the price as it is more expensive than some similar laptops. Overall, a great laptop and I would recommend it to anyone.

I am in the medical field so this review is not for the people who are looking for technical wordings. I have been loyal to microsoft/windows since my first desktop. I was soo excited when I heard about the surface laptop and surface book releases. This is by far my favorite laptops. I love the feature that the display can be detached and used as a tablet. One full charging stays for atleast 14-16hrs straight for me when I am doing regular browsing or reading PDFs. Windows version is user friendly. And there are a lot of features that makes reading ebooks or PDFs lot more fun. Overall, its a bit heavier than lenovo yoga or HP spectre but the display which can be used as tablet is light and I carry it during my rounds. I have been using it for over 10 months now and I didnt have any technical issues or crashes or battery problems. But I think its priced about 200-250 dollars above the lenovo and HP laptops.

Apple guy, but loves his surface!

In the past, i have owned a surface pro 4... Sold it and wish i hadn't.. I am an apple guy and i have a macbook pro 15" i7 with 16GB of ram, and boy was that expensive.. So because of this, i actually use it more as a desktop in my home office rather than a laptop.. I don't take it anyway.. plus it's big.. When i sold my surface pro 4, i regretted that.. So I have been looking at the surface line for a while not and i decided to pull the trigger on the surface book 2. I absolutely am very happy i did. For what I do, at least in windows, 8GB of ram is plenty and the 256GB hard drive was plenty as well.. Of course if you're more of a power user and need more ram and space, then get a model with more ram and/or hard drive space.. For me, what I feel like i love most about this product is the fact it's a cross from the surface pro and the surface laptop. While it's docked to the keyboard, it's very much like a laptop, but undocked, it's very much like the surface pro... So i feel this time around, i now have the best of both worlds... There are times when i have to use it more like a tablet and then there are times i need to use it more like a laptop... So having the surface book 2 is perfect for me. I love that it has 2 batteries as well.. one in the screen housing, and another in the keyboard housing... This makes battery life last longer for what I use it for, but your mileage may very... I can definitely suck down the battery quickly when it's in tablet mode, but i am able to charge it very quickly. Also the other thing that I love, and i reviewed this as well, is I can use the microsoft surface dock with this device.. So when I am in my home office, i can plug the dock in and use it with my microsoft mouse, microsoft keyboard, and my LED monitor and use it as if it were a desktop pc.. So needless to say, im very pleased with the performance and it's what I would expect from having the surface pro in the past... If you need the best of both worlds, definitely consider purchasing this device.. It's definitely one of the better options.

    Great laptop

The Surface Book 2 is a great laptop with a great solid premium feel. It looks and feels modern, but not gaudy like laptops by HP or Dell sometimes can be. I think it captures that "feel-good" feeling that Apple has been able to capture so well with it's devices. But beyond look and feel, the rest of the laptop delivers the premium feel as well. The hardware is solid, with keyboard that feels great to type on, and nothing feels flimsy. Pop the screen off from the keyboard base, and you have a top-of-the-line tablet that feels light for its size, but still feels like it has substance. Windows handles the attaching/detaching of the screen very well. Though the actual physical removing and reattaching the screen I've found to be a little awkward. The pegs on the keyboard that the screen attaches to are magnetic, so when trying to put the screen back on, the magnets are pulling together while you're trying to line the thing up. Then when detaching the magnets loosely hold the screen in place and I'm just afraid of pulling too hard. My only other grips are minor. I was a little underwhelmed with the i5 performance. So much so I'm returning the i5 model and upgrading to the the i7 model. This may just be a matter of expectations. It still performs very well. I also wish the screen had maybe a USB port of some sort. That would add a little bit of versatility to it while using the screen as a tablet by itself (pro tip: the charger can be plugged into the tablet/screen where it connects to the dock, to charge the tablet/screen independent of the keyboard base). Battery life is great. I was able to get 6 hours of use importing and editing photos in Lightroom. Farcry from the alleged 17 hours, which is probably measured on light web browsing and document editing, but I don't doubt you can easily get a full day on a single charge. It seems from 100% - 80% the laptop discharges both batteries. At 80% the tablet/screen battery stops discharging and it uses just the keyboard battery, until that's down to 50%, then it starts using both batteries again. I haven't noticed if there is another point at which it stops using the tablet battery. I imagine this discharging pattern is to maximize battery health, and also favoring the tablet battery so you have as much charge as possible if it's disconnected. I don't know if the way it discharges the batteries can be changed.

I was recently moved to a desk position at my current company, but I didn't want to be constrained to a desktop PC. I had my gaming laptop, but it was not something I wanted to lug to work everyday. I found this little gem and have not looked back since. Easy to use, very light and the battery lasts forever. Images are crisp and clean. Coupled with my OneDrive account, I have virtually all the storage I need.

Excellent performance and graphics. Lightweight and compact with plenty of speed to handle daily work activity. Touchscreen is easy to use and sensitive to the first touch. On the expensive side compared to the majority of other laptops capable of every day work but worth it if you are looking for a high-performance and compact laptop.

I am typing this review from our Surface Book 2. It is sleek, powerful, versatile, and just what we needed. From using it to complete homework, to artwork, and taking notes in meetings this is a great option. It is a little heavier than most laptops due to the hinge and screen that doubles a tablet. If you are looking for a 2-in-1 laptop this is a compelling choice.

1 year and going strong! I have had my computer for one year. I am a heavy user averaging 6-8 hours/day seven days a week. Still runs as well as it did the day I got it. Battery will still last all day. See below for other positive aspects. Haven’t found a thing I don’t like about this computer. I have had this gem for about 6 weeks. I am a heavy computer user with between 8-10 hours daily for work. I have owned several computers from various companies. This is by far my favorite! Quick loading even with multiple programs and browsers open. The battery will last me all day even with heavy use. And it’s light weight! Love it!
