Motorola has been synonymous with communication for as long as I can remember. I have owned several SURFboard modems and even more recently the MG8702 Gigabit Cable Modem Router. Their latest offering q14 WiFi 6E Mesh Router System follows on the heels of legendary reliability and stable performance.
The q14 is a mesh system which means it operates via devices/nodes that operate as one network. It essentially expands coverage and throughput by broadcasting your network from the various nodes. By placing them strategically around your home or office, dead zones or reduced speeds and increased latency associated with increased distance from your router can become a thing of the past. My three-device setup can cover up to 5400 sqft; my townhouse is about 1700 sqft for reference. The q14 also has tri-band connectivity; it operates on the 2.4, 5 and 6Ghz frequencies capable of speeds up to 574, 2,400 and 2,400 Mbps respectively. My current internet service is up to 800 Mbps and the q14 reports speeds of around 555 Mbps. WiFi6 is the newest IEEE 802.11 standard (ax) which is also backwards compatible with devices employing previous standards a, b, g, n and ac. My laptop, running Windows 10, alerted when it connected to the newer standard. Besides the higher speeds, operating on the newest standard, assuming you have compatible devices, reduces the likelihood of interference (until your neighbors catch up). My connection range has also drastically improved; I am able to stay connected to about 150ft outside the house. This was tested with my Samsung Note20 Ultra while connected via Wifi6.
For the mesh setup, one of the nodes connects directly to the router while the remaining two act as extenders. All three devices are identical and can function as either the Router or Extender. Each node weighs approximately 24 oz with dims of 6.3” x 6.1” x 4.75” (H x D x W). Their unobtrusive design is to help blend in with existing décor although that may be subject to debate based on individual preferences. I rather like them; my eight-year-old thought it was a speaker which is not so farfetched considering the fabriclike material that wraps majority of the device. Behind each device, from top to bottom is a WPS button (one touch connectivity for compatible devices), a 2.5GbE Ethernet WAN/LAN port, a 1GbE Ethernet LAN port, an AC power port and a reset button (10 second depression for factory reset). The front has a single status indicating LED (white, blue and amber). The light can be distracting at night in case you are wondering.
The minimalist packaging consists of three identical boxes with each box containing:
• q14 WiFi 6E Mesh device (x1)
• 1.5m Cat 6 Ethernet white cable (x1)
• Quick start guide (x1)
Setup is fairly straight forward. After downloading the moto sync (powered by MINIM) app, prompts literally walk you through the entire process. Each device has a QR code beneath it as well as a default SSID name and password. After the first device is connected as the Router, the subsequent devices are cleverly added as the Extenders. I am particularly pleased by the thought of adding additional devices in the future. For my setup in a three-level townhouse, I had my Router located in the middle floor with an Extender at upstairs and downstairs floors. In my previous setup with a Wifi5 tri-band router, I had two separate SSIDs: one for the 2.4Ghz and another for the two 5Ghz. I discovered that the q14 does not provide an option to separate the frequencies per SSID, meaning the two SSIDs I previously had each now has 2.4, 5 and 6Ghz frequencies. My rationale in the past was to separate the frequencies by SSID to ensure I had capable devices connecting to their optimal standards. With the three-level setup, the q14 attempts to, rather cleverly “follow” devices around the house; it connects and disconnects for optimal performance. There have been instances where my cellphone would stay connected to the Downstairs node while I may be closer to the Upstairs or Middle nodes but I have come to realize that if connectivity is still okay, there is nothing to worry about. The app also has ability to optimize frequencies based on your home type (i.e., apartment, townhouse or single family). I was able to get all my old devices to connect except an older HP 8620 printer. I am not sure if it has to do with the WPA2/WPA3 security or not but I have tried every trick to no avail. I intend to either replace it or eventually get another node in the future to hardwire the printer.
The moto sync app has potential but also has some quirks such as the lack of an exhaustive category list. I have a connected water heater and a refrigerator which all get categorized under appliance (microwave symbol); there is also only a “Computer” category with no distinction for laptops or all-in-ones. Some competitors have icons for almost all commonly used smart devices (i.e., locks, doorbells, cameras, refrigerators etc.) and I hope this can be accomplished in the future via updates. While the app makes setup and networking easy, it would be very much welcomed if there was an option to setup via the web for example in order to configure beyond the app. For example, I am not sure if the WPA3 protection could be the reason my older HP printer cannot connect; I would like the ability to turn that off if that would help? An option to assign specific bands to my SSIDs would also be great. On the plus side, moto sync can effectively pause devices, block sites and even brief you on content being accessed by connected devices. I have owned several routers from other manufacturers that promised and failed miserably at blocking devices. It can also provide connection speeds for each device via the “run speed test” button.
I see a whole lot of potential with the robust hardware and future improvements to the app. The devices are even touted to have some inbuilt surge protection according to Motorola. Standard warranty is two years which may potentially never be used given the brand’s reputation. In summary, I am very happy with the q14 WiFi 6E Mesh system thus far. Fast, stable and far-reaching all describe its performance very well and I wholeheartedly recommend.

This is my first tri-band (2.4GHZ, 5GHZ & 6GHZ) mesh router that supports Wi-Fi 6E (i.e. supports 6GHZ spectrum) which is the latest standard that enables faster speeds and lower latency than previous Wi-Fi standards. This is a perfect mesh router if you have several devices and I have 40+ devices (smart TVs, Blu-ray players, smart cameras, gaming systems, home security and lighting system, robo vacuum, etc.) connected to this main and child nodes across 3 floors (2400 sqft) with no dead zones. I did a quick Wi-Fi signal strength test using a phone app and the signal was strong on all floors, in all rooms, and in the yard. This is a great upgrade given the number of connected devices I have, and it supports internet speeds greater than 1Gbps which is great for VR gaming while you have other smart devices running/streaming in the background. The spec says you can cover 5000 sqft with 3 nodes which is great multi-floor homes.
Set-up and Features: Small footprint, light weight with visible LED indicator for router status (connected/connecting/weak signal). Each node has one 1GbE LAN port which is good if you want to connect your home security router, smart device router, etc. Set-up was super easy with Motorola app, just had to scan the QR code on each node and follow the instructions on the app. I had issues trying to get it to connect to my cable modem initially, but after several attempts it finally did connect to the cable modem. Ran a firmware update as soon as it connected to the modem. The app has tons of features and options to customize the settings to meet your needs. You can also create profiles and customizable features/filters such as safe mode (to block adult content), ad privacy, security plus, bedtime settings that disables Wi-Fi on certain devices, etc. I had a bunch of them set to optimize and prioritize internet access among various devices. The WPS button on the back allows you to connect wireless devices without needing to enter password and it worked perfectly to connect my robo vacuums and printer with just one click.
My only two complaints are it doesn't have any USB ports and each device has only one LAN port. I wish it came with two additional ethernet ports as I have 3 smart device routers that I wanted to connect to the parent node in the living room. Overall, the performance is great and worth the upgrade given the number of smart devices I have, and I can see myself adding more devices in coming years without having to upgrade my router!

THIS is the Motorola Q14 mesh system, sold in a two and three-pack variety and expandable for your coverage needs. Covered in white speaker-esque fabric, the Q14 is easy to hide or have sit on a shelf as its modern frame seamlessly blends into just about any background. With one ethernet port out and one in (as one of the Q14s will need to be ethernet plugged into the modem) and power, there aren’t many ports available - this is a trend that will continue moving forward. The Q14 has Wifi 6E which is the new 6ghz band available for devices as the 2.5 and 5ghz bands have become increasingly crowded. While this may be an excellent option for a router, is it the best in a tight marketplace where aesthetics, features, and the mobile app are all highly contested? Let's dive into it.
Aesthetic - The Q14 as stated before is covered in white speaker-esque fabric. The Q14 is easy to hide or have sat on a shelf its off-white fabric blend is easy to look past. I personally think other designs are more attractive and will be easier to clean as dust is attracted to the fabric easily. I would have liked to see a plastic exterior, but, that being said, it is hard to make the same item look different between brands. I mean, aren't they all white spheres of some similar shape essentially? I feel like this is Motorola's attempt at standing out and I can’t sin them for that.
Ports - The Q14 has one ethernet in (from the modem, as this mesh system doesn’t include one built-in), and one ethernet out and power in. I was disappointed to see that this didn't have USB-C, especially for being new AND other brands switching over to USB-C power. I was also quite let down that it only had one usable ethernet port per tower, as several other brands have two or even three in the same price range and is something I would want as I have a PS5 and Xbox One in my gaming room and having to switch or pick one or the other to have ethernet is just annoying.
App - I have had routers from several brands…Netgear, Xfinity, Att, Asus, etc. The Motorola app is by far the BEST app I have used for any router/modem. Period. It is insanely quick, snappy, and loads everything almost instantly (even off-network). The layout is very clean and I can see just about everything I could want in one or just a few touches that are easily played out. I have to say, after my prior encounters with other brands, I had almost completely written off the app as a feature but Motorola killed it with this one. Truly a tip of the hat!
Setup - Going off of my last point, setup was a breeze! The app flowed easily and thanks to the QR codes you can scan on the bottom, pairing each new expansion was almost effortless and easily explained. In total it took me probably 25/30 minutes total to set up the routers but only 5/10 minutes of the actual time was spent actively setting the Q14s up as the rest of the time is filled with updates and the routers all syncing together. Super easy and by far the easiest I have encountered thus far.
How it stacks up - While it doesn’t quite have as many features as some of its competition, what it does have included, it executes on quite well. It’s range is enormous (I would challenge to say more than 5,000sqft of range), its app is quick and flawless and it does operate on the Wi-Fi 6E band which is nice to see. If you can get past the cloth possibly getting dusty and the lack of ports available on the product, and no modem included - Then this is quite a good setup! I knocked a star off for the lack of features but if they aren’t what you are looking at anyways then I would probably challenge you to look cheaper but this isn’t an inherently inferior product, just a little pricy at $650. That being said, if you just want a seamless experience where you turn it on and set it up and forget about it, this is a great option as, again, its app and setup is near flawless. As always, bestbuy has a great return program so there isn’t a reason to not test it out as they have a quite generous return program.

It might not be clear from the description but this is not simply another Wi-Fi router.
While yes, this router performs excellent with Wi-Fi6 and Wi-Fi 6E radios, wireless/wired mesh networking, 2.5 Gb uplink port, the star is the managed security functionality.
This is a long review to explain exactly how this works. I'm a software engineer which worked on network and appliance designs for years, so take it as an informed review:
Background
The Motorola Networks brand is licensed by Minim, which is the company that actually produces this router.
I know this because it's a New England company (Where I live). It was started by one of the Dyn networks founders (Dynamic DNS provider) and the company also provides remote management of WiFi networks for ISPs (Internet providers) and for business that needs these solutions. Late in 2020, they merged with another Boston area company Zoom Telephonics, which has been making networking products since the late '70s (Modems, Cable Modems, Wi-Fi, etc.) So it seems like a good combination of a hardware company with a long history and a modern management system for a Mesh Wi-Fi. They've been licensing the Motorola name for several years now.
The routers have no local management: There is no web page to configure it, and all has to be done from a mobile app: Moto sync.
There is a very good onboarding that walks you through setting this up in mere minutes. It's very straightforward, except that I'm using Verizon Fios and I had to wait for the DHCP lease from my old router to expire so I could continue the set up. Regardless once the Wi-Fi router connects it's straightforward, and one can start using it. There is a QR code on the bottom of the router and a big sync button on the bottom of each router to connect right away.
Once connected, the routers use the MINIM service DNS servers that act as a filter for malicious sites. The level of filters and other restrictions can be set from the app. There is no way to change the DNS servers the router will use because many of the security features would stop working. There is no manual override of this.
The router will also detect each device connected to it, analyze its MAC address and profile the traffic determining exactly what type of device it is, including in my case the specific model of Apple laptop, the iOS version running on iPhones, the model of Alexa speakers, models of Bose and Sonos speakers, PC maker, Windows version, different Wi-Fi lights and so on.
It will also profile and record bandwidth utilization and each web site visited (or DNS address). It does this by inspecting DNS queries. It does not seem to snoop on URLs or context (and most is encrypted nowadays so it wouldn't be practically possible).
Every device is then assigned to a common pool, and through the app one can create profiles (ie, users in the house or office) and assign individual devices to each profile. So then the app allows to apply filters and blocks per profile. This is very neat.
The app can also push notifications on events like someone connecting a new device.
The app allows to rename the Wi-Fi network and change from the default password, and also create different networks on the router, but it does not allow to change the IP range from the default 192.168.1.0 and it also does not allow to reserve IP addresses.
It does allow UPnP and port forwarding although since it does not allow IP reservations, the app lets one set up forwarding based on the name of the device. For example if I want to expose the Plex Media server port I have to do it based on the computer running it, not its IP address. I find this is clever and user friendly, although not what I expected.
One device did not work, and it's a fairly new LIFX lightbulb, and figured out it does not work because the router only provides WPA3 security (which is the latest in Wi-Fi security and what everyone should be using), but this Wi-Fi light did not support it. So there's a caveat that if someone has some older devices or some appliances that happen to support Wi-Fi, they might not work. The workaround is to connect an older Wi-Fi router dedicated to these one-off devices, that just need connection but not the latest in Wi-Fi.
Also note that Wi-Fi 6E (the new 6Ghz band) has limited range. One new All-in-one desktop with Intel 12th gen CPU and Wi-Fi 6E radio was not able to reach the router in the 6Ghz frequency but it connected fine using the 5Ghz Wi-Fi 6.
Also as I had technical questions I contacted support via the chat feature on the app and the rep was very knowledgeable and provided straight answers and did not have to wait long at all. At this rate their support seems excellent.
Overall, I would heartily recommend this to someone that is not very involved and just want things to work, like 99% of us. For someone more technical that needs more flexibility, this might not be for them. Too bad because those are basic things that could be added to these routers but in fact it's currently not possible.
Also I have to say that all the included security features come included, there are no extra fees. There are no upsells on the app. It just works with all the security features enabled. It's a great deal in this regard.

The first thing that I noticed after installing this mesh system, how good a coverage it provides in every part of our house. So, full marks on that and here are more details:
The setup was easy without any glitches (my experience with other mesh systems have been mixed so it was a welcome change). I simply downloaded the Motosync mobile app, connected the router node to my modem and then followed the instructions on the app. I think it took me around 15 mins to complete the setup.
After the setup, I tested the performance of the router in different parts of my house and I was pleased to see the results. I have 1 Gbps internet connection and I was able to get 800-900 Mbps speeds in the close proximity while the farthest areas were showing up to 200 Mbps speeds. This is good enough for our household and probably for most of us.
It also has good amount of parental controls built in (block website, internet time limits, block ads and ads tracking) and also have a good network security software.
Overall, it is a good mesh system which supports all the latest WiFi techs (OFDMA, QAM, MU-MIMO etc) and provides good data rates on all the wifi bands (as per manual 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 2400 Mbps on 5 and 6 GHz each). It is a little bit on the expensive side but hopefully you will be able to get it on sale during the holiday season :)

The Motorola Q14 exceeds my expectations

My router was fine at first then I added an extender then I just wanted something better since now I have over 20 devices using the internet including an 8k TV a gaming console and computers. The solution is the Motorola Q14 since it just got released with many specs that I wanted. Do not get me wrong I liked my router but now it is time to welcome new technology. I know Motorola has a two pack but I got the 3 pack so it would cover the entire house including my backyard. I know it covers up to 5000 sq. ft. but with so many signals around my house, streaming movies, and all the devices, this is the best solution.
The Q14 comes in nicely packaged and right out of the box the system looks awesome; they look like elegant speakers so I do not mind leaving them out in the open. I did not need to hide them at all.
At first I thought it was going to be difficult to install so I prepared a few hours just in case, and it was super easy and did not take long for me to do so. I think it tool longer on knowing the placing so they can be around the house instead of the actual setup.
To install, just download the app and it lets you know step by step what to do. Basically disconnect your router, unplug the modem, connect one of the Q14 to the modem then turn both on. Then just setup as you would on the router by following the steps on the app.
As a tip, you can use the same name and password you had on the old one so the devices you had just connect without reconnecting one by one and you are done.
As for the performance, I couldn’t be happier, no dead zones anywhere in the house or the backyard. The speeds on all of them are at top same speed, I do not need to disconnect and reconnect any of my devices, and they just work flawless. It does have WiFi 6E, it does cover without any interruption.
The application is easy to understand, it warns me if there is any connection to the WiFi, I can disconnect any device or pause them from the app and also setup timers if I want. You can create family profiles to set filters and timers as well as monitor it is just excellent. The WPA3 security lets me be worry free and sends alerts when there is any change.
Overall it is an amazing upgrade and everyone in the house is happy with the Q14, how they look, how they perform and with 2 year warranty and free support I am happy as well.

A few hiccups, but things are going great!

My home is a smart home with dozens of smart lightbulbs, sensors, cameras, garage door openers, streaming devices. So having a strong and stable wi-fi connection is important. I have gigabit internet from the local fiber provider but as we know that doesn’t translate to Wi-Fi speeds, so I’m always on the hunt for a way to get faster use out of my ISP!
Wired backhaul is a feature that’s important to me because I have neighbors that are somewhat close, and though my house isn’t massive it’s large enough that 3 spread out satellites have average connection strength over wireless.
Installation is pretty straight forward with the app. I’ve had a previous Moto system, and like before the firmware app that it downloads during installation seems to take longer than it should. The app did crash while installing the firmware on a satellite and I had to reach out to customer care thru chat to have them update the firmware remotely. Once I got everything set up I placed the two satellites in alternating areas upstairs and downstairs that also had wired backhaul. I used the same WiFi name and password as my previous system and generally speaking, the devices found the new router system without issues.
From the get-go I could tell that wireless speeds were going to be stronger with this setup. Mind you, I’m still only getting ~400-500Mbps, but my last Moto system was more in the 300-400 range with peaks of 450 if I was standing right next to the router.
I did also have to open a discussion with Moto care because the Moto Sync app did not seem to indicate that my satellites were connected by the ethernet backhaul, but it’s working great now! It’s amazing (but somewhat unsettling) that they can support so much with their controls without having the ol’ “unplug the router and wait 30 seconds” routine that you get with tech support usually. Another minor note - when my Xbox One connected over Wi-Fi it crashed the whole Wi-Fi network. A google search I found said it had something to do with sleep mode, so I turned that off and connected over ethernet to the back of my Q14 and all seems to be well in the world.
Well done Moto. A few hiccups, but things are going great!

I mention hassle free 2.4ghz in particular because many of our Wi-Fi light switches and plugs require 2.4ghz and they all connected flawlessly! (these have given me trouble with other Wi-Fi systems)
These take a bit of time to setup, but well worth it. Give yourself 30-60 mins to setup. Each of the 3 units (1st one becomes main and other 2 are extenders) takes 10-15 minutes to setup and update firmware. You need to put them near each other for the initial setup and then move them to their final desired location after setup. The app was intuitive and easy to use that walks you through the initial setup.
Pro tip with upgrading/replacing any Wi-Fi – setup your new network with the same name and password! This will save you a ton of time not having to reset up every device, tv, tablet, Wi-Fi plugs and light switches, etc. on your network.
I tested speeds before and after in multiple spots of the house. Huge speed improvement! For example, in my office, my old Wi-Fi was pulling 79 maps down and with this system I jumped up to 176 maps down! (My ISP throttles upload speeds so no change on upload for me).
Only thing I would have like to have seen is additional hard-wired ports on at least one of the 3 devices. I had 3 things hard wired into my old router and these only have 1 network cat 5 per unit. I did have to buy an inexpensive small port extender to use at the main router to work around this, but if you don’t have any hardwired devices this won’t be an issue for you.
These are a bit pricey, but with adding more and more internet connected devices and streaming this is a great upgrade. We’ve got over 60 connected devices (pc’s, tablets, phones, printers, lots of Wi-Fi switches, tv’s, etc.) and speeds are great.

The phrase “give up” rhymes with disappoint to me and I have always tried to omit it from my lexicon. Even though I almost gave up installing this Motorola Q14 Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi System, I am so extremely glad that I did not. In theory it is an amazingly easy setup and if the app works smoothly and the modem interacts well, normally it would take under an hour to set up these three (3) devices. It took me several hours over a few days to do the same with the help of four truly knowledgeable company techs, through phone calls and chats. A few times these techs were as stumped by the glitches I encountered as I was, but with their patience and persistence, politeness, and general “old-fashioned, and refreshing” customer service, the installation eventually came together, and this system works better than I expected it to. It absolutely works great.
The glitches that I continuously encountered were caused because I have between 50 and 60 network devices running on fiber optics through an internet provider’s modem that allows for data and two phone lines, and it is a modem that only that company knows something about. The network devices in my home, home office and around the perimeter of the building range from 2.4 GHz to 5.0 GHz. Since the modem is not something that I could researched, had selected, and purchased, there were compatibility issues that had to be forced into reconciliation. It is my opinion that the glitches were mostly of this nature and not the cause of Minim Motorola’s app or Q14 Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi System. But since I am not positively sure, I do not feel like I can give it five stars since it took so much time and I have no proof that it was the fiber optics modem’s stubborn resistance to a new router.
This mesh system is made up of three (3) identical devices that look like a small speaker. Oval in shape, covered with fabric, each is approximately 24 oz in weight, 6.3” H x 6.1” D x 4.75” W and each is packaged with an electrical cord and a 1.5m Cat 6 Ethernet cable. Any of the three can be set as the router and the other two are then set up as the extenders.
The router was fairly easy to set up. It simply replaces any other device or devices that are being used as a router with your modem. Once done, you will be asked to let it update its firmware and then it will begin to look for devices on the network. There is a button toward the top on the back of each unit that if pushed with encourage the unit to look for any devices on the network. It can find these without being pushed, but this is like a little enabler-- it gives it a little extra help if needed.
Each unit also has a 2.5 Gb uplink port, data out, electrical, and a reset button which only works if pushed for more than ten long seconds. I suppose one could use a TP link with this for extra ports if needed. I am thrilled with the speed and stability that I have found and even though I have a TPLink sitting here looking at me, I am not willing to try it, as I have my exterior wired security system going into the router and that is all I need.
To build the stability I needed for all of these devices, my ‘L-shaped’ structure and square footage, I needed to add the other two units as extenders and place them strategically throughout the space beyond the office. Adding these two as extenders is where I had such a problem and where I had to continuously reset the devices. I am fairly suspect that this is because of the fiber optics and internet company modem that I am using, as it wanted to set each as a router. However, with persistence, it works as planned and is the most stable internet signal that I have ever had.
To add an extender to the system, the app allows the option of adding to an existing network. Then the app directs one to scan the QR code on the bottom of each device and to follow the directions on the app. Each unit will go through a process of updating the firmware for each device. If you do encounter any errors, I would encourage you to click the chat button on the app where the error is stated, and you will find an extremely helpful trained tech in the help center that will help you solve the problem.
I have tried another system that I thought was going to work, but it just did not maintain stability of my network’s signal. With my upgrade to fiber optics as my internet source, I increased my speed, but I had security devices and a couple of TVs falling off the network, so I did not do anything about solidifying the stability of the network consistently throughout all of the network devices. I really needed this product to work like it was designed to work, and it does.
It advertises that it supports speeds up to 5.4 Gbps for over one hundred connected devices. For me it seems to have ended the dead zones caused by the square footage and the shape of my living/workspace. Before installing the Q-14 Tri-Band Mesh System, I could not place the router in a central spot in my living/workspace where it did not drop coverage somewhere else, so either part of my security system was offline, or a printer, or a TV was having a struggle with streaming, etc. This system spreads the network signal out consistently so that the inconsistent signal problem is gone. It is going to take me a little time to place the devices on the different Q14 extenders as I feel that should be, so that I can easily see on the app if an intruder has invaded my system. But the system is pretty secure in the way that it is designed. It has a pretty impressive built-in security. It also comes with a 2-year warranty, that also includes wonderful free support from the US-based technicians that all appear to like their jobs. I have never had internet service this solid, fast, dependable, and consistent. I highly recommend the Minim Motorola Q-14 Tri-Band Mesh System and am happy that I have it.

I've been using an enterprise grade 802.11ac access point for about 4 years now. The router that's built into the gateway from my isp wasn't cutting it trying to cover our entire home. There is about 2000sqft of basement, 1st floor, and 2nd floor to cover. Plus a deck and patio. I was really happy with the AP after I installed it and was able to walk about 50yards down the street and still get a signal. We have 1Gb fiber internet service and had multiple devices on our network. The number of devices connected has grown to about 40 currently connected.
I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on networking, so I can't say if that's a lot or not. I didn't necessarily have any speed issues that I can recall except for out on our patio. However, once I installed this mesh wifi system and did some comparison speed tests, I quickly saw what I had been missing out on. Again, not an expert so I can't really say why there's such a huge difference other than it's newer technology, but the difference is pretty significant.
I've posted some screenshots of before and after speed tests in various locations around my house and outside, and I think the numbers speak for themselves.

I've been wanting to try a WIFI 6E mesh system for a while now so I was pretty excited to get this. Pros: Easy set up, but you have to literally follow the instructions exactly. I didn't unplug my modem when connecting the router and this added about 10 minutes. All in all, it took about 30 minutes to set up and link all the nodes. The app is easy to follow but is super basic. I'll get to this in the cons. Range is pretty good, if not slightly better than my Asus mesh but with that, I am not switching between 2.4 and 5Ghz. I run constantly on 5Ghz with my current set up. Speed is on point. I run about 450-470Mpbs download with 20 upload and I consistently averaged this as long as I was connected to 5Ghz. While on 2.4Ghz, I consistently ran at 100Mpbs and 20 upload. As for 6Ghz, only my laptop has the ability to connect with the Intel AX210 WIFI 6e network card. Even with WIFI 6Ghz enabled and the settings on I could never get the laptop to connect. I did all updates and rebooted everything, noticing that it would still prefer 5GHz. Disappointing. Also, there is almost zero control over your network. You are not able to split up the signals, everything is auto chosen. Security defaults to the new protocol (most of the time). You are not able to select channels or security settings. The Q14 does all this for you and it does it well. I gamed with my XBOX hard wired into a node, that is using ethernet for backhaul. Even at 80 feet away, I was able to still run at max speeds and had zero issues. Overall, I really like this set up and I will use this in future, but I will be moving back to my Asus mesh setup which allows me to control everything. I recommend this for large houses and for persons that wish to set up once, and forget it.

The Q14 mesh system is quite an attractive looker that blends into your decor however the app used to control said system definitely needs work.
Packaging: Starting with packaging it's a very easy affair. Just a simple sleeve containing the 3 individual boxes containing each router. Each box itself just has a pull tab to open it which I love to see, no tape abound to get in the way.
Inside isa container to lift the router out of the box with a separate box underneath containing the power cord and a cat 6 Ethernet cable.
One thing to note, the edges of the inside of the box are pretty sharp. I managed to cut myself on the first box so some caution here is advised.
Design: moving onto the design of the router. It's very minimalistic, with a grey fabric exterior and a white ventilation port on top. It blends well into the environment and can certainly enhance the look of the room.
Function/Software: this is where we get into the murky but about the product. Starting with the good, it was very quick and simple setup using the app to configure. All you have to do is plug it in, open the app, scan the QR code on the routers to connect them to the network and you're off to the races.
The experience when using the system is pretty good. Things connected pretty quickly (for the most part) and connectivity was good for a variety of uses.
Didn't have any issues with slowdowns or dropouts when using my computer to remote into my office computer over a VPN.
For gaming, I decided to try my Xbox and ps5 over wifi directly instead of the usual hardwire connection to the extender node I usually employ.
The connection quality here was surprisingly excellent. I played a few different online games especially those that usually provide network issues like smite and while it wasn't completely 10/10 no lag, it was far less frequent and much less worse in severity, probably about maybe 6 seconds in total over a 5 hour gaming period.
Since I also own some wifi 6 devices, I decided to try those out and I saw much appreciated increase in speed and reduction in loading, especially with certain apps on my phone like tachiyomi. My PS5 insists however on connecting to the 5ghz band rather than the 6hz band but that was still an excellent experience overall.
This is definitely a great system if you want to just set it and forget with the bare minimum of configuration like changing the SSID and turning on UPNP.
Unfortunately, we get to the bad part. Frankly the app is terrible and besides configuring the initial network setup is useless.
To begin in an effort to make your network always look good, it will give you various statuses of your network state ranging from amazing to magnificent to superb, all within a span of a few minutes upon closing and reopening the app.
Secondly, many of the app functions just plainly don't work at all. Trying to rename devices in the app to identify just flat out doesn't work tho categorizing them as certain devices does which is something at least.
Trying to see what devices are connection which band is a similar exercise in futility just because none of the buttons actually filter anything, it just shows the same list of connected devices.
Speaking of which, there also seems to be a mismatch between the total number of devices it shows as connected to the network vs what it shows connected to each node which is infuriating.
There's also a lack of customizable settings for things such as QOS (not sure if it's employing SQM or other QOS schemes automatically or whether it's just lacking them in general) with really the only thing able to configure is UPNP as well as port forwarding, DHCP and the like.
I also had a few devices that have some issues. My Xbox for example had lost of trouble getting an open nat type because it couldn't successfully connect to UPNP which is the first time I've ever had that happen tho I did manage to get it to connect eventually after a few reboots of both it and the router.
My soundbar similarly has a weird issue where it thinks it has no internet connection tho I can still cast to it from my phone which is quite peculiar. I've never experienced these issues with any other router so I'm more inclined to put the onus for these issues on the router itself.
Overall though, it's not all doom and gloom. I think this router is great for most people that are just gonna set it up on default and keep it moving and the actual experience when using the wifi is pretty stellar. It's just the lousy app functionality bringing down the experience.
I really struggled on how to rate this product overall with either 3 or 4 stars. I really want to rate 3.5 stars but since I can't I decided to settle on 4 stars due to the fact that the actual wifi experience is pretty amazing which is the main point of the system even though the app and slight connectivity issues with devices bring to down slightly.
I'd really love to see them either fix the app issues specifically for just the basic functionality like naming devices since that is my main issue or just abandon the app entirely and use a web based setup because right now that's the number 1 issue with the product.

This is a decent mesh system overall (good hardware), provided that you are not a heavy user. If you have a decent mix of devices on both the bands, I am guessing it may work fine.
But that is not how a typical household is, for instance in my home I have some 30+ IOT devices which can only connect through 2.4 band. Now Q14 app does not allow to have separate SSID for 5 ghz & 2.4 band so the devices which can connect to 5 ghz cannot be explicitly put there. Sometimes the App put them in 2.4 ghz band and the whole experience changes for worse. My desktop which can do both 2.4 & 5, works well if connected to a 5 band even if the signal strength is not as good as the 2.4 band. It works well for days and suddenly the songs will not stream, when I check I find it on 2.4 band.
Second problem with this forced band steering is the issue of isolation. With my last router I could create a VLAN using the guest network and my IOT devices could not connect to my personal devices. Q14 does not offer any such option.
I asked the Minim support from the phone app (great option BTW), and they confirmed that separate SSID can not be assigned, though it has been told to the engineering.
In my case, Wifi 6 is used as the backhaul between the nodes and it works decently. I can see full speeds (600+) on devices connected to the satellite nodes. It can use wired backhaul as well. There were dead spots with my previous gaming router and most of them are gone with this system.
Each node can do 1 ethernet out, would have been great to have more port at this price point but that is a moot point as I can just add a switch.
I used all three nodes, and I see some devices connecting to the node furthest away from them and it does not move them after some time. As there isn't much documentation around this product I am still investigating it.
The App though polished does not always work as intended, say a new device joins the network, it gives you a notification. Clicking on that notification sometimes takes you to the device added and sometime does not. Similarly, when there is no profile and you click on profile tab, it shows you all the devices but after that it removes that option, making it inconsistent.
Another issue is lack of documentation around the options in App. There is a Wifi optimization setting which ask for the house type, but nowhere it is mentioned what/how it optimizes. Which kind of takes us back to my original point that perhaps they are not targeting advanced users with Q14.
I am probably going to repurpose my last router as an AP and use that to get these missing functionality.
The hardware is great but at this price point, I was expecting not just the hardware, I was expecting separate SSID for bands, network isolation for IoT devices, separate guest network so that I do not have to share my main wifi password and probably more as all this was there in my $220 gaming router.

**NOTE: For users who were concerned about lacking the ability to have a guest network with a separate password, it is there, it works, it’s just not called “Guest Network”. You just open the app and tap “Add Network” under “Wifi Networks”. I created a network called Guest, indicated that it was a “Work” network, and it is running great and it is isolated from the rest of the network. I think creating a third SSID and isolating that by calling it “Work” is basic wireless VLAN for regular people, it’s just non-intuitive for us nerds, it seems wonderful for non-techies.**
The Motorola Q14 has blanketed my entire 1968 split level house with strong wifi signal, even to 50’ out in the yard.
This is a mesh wifi system that is going to be great for basic users who are not interested in anything other than “I have Wi-Fi” with a single switch to turn on “Security”.
You should prepare to spend about an hour setting up the network with the 3 node system, as it will need to update the firmware on all three identical units. Once the system is up and running via the extremely simple setup in the phone app (the only way to interact with it).
I have Xfinity gigabit service and saw consistent download scores close to 700, which is right on par with a wired connection during the day when the network is busy. I have indicated up/down link speeds on my wifi 6 enabled machine on the 5GHz band of 2402/2402. Super fast, and I can tell no difference between running on the wire from my old Netgear R9000 or using the wireless connection on the Motorola Q14, granted, the machine’s antenna is 4 feet away from the “router” node (the one with the ISP modem ethernet cable plugged in to the TOP port [bad design choice]).
I’m having a hard time finding anything wrong with the wireless performance throughout the house, I get my full 40Mbps upload speed anywhere in the house or yard with my iPhone Xs, which is not wifi 6 enabled as far as I know. The download speeds vary greatly, I’m pulling 800Mbps on the machine right next to the router unit with wifi 6, but even at the extent of the range of the signal out in the yard, I get download speeds above 200. Pretty impressive.
There are issues for users that expect an extremely expensive networking product to offer more than basic features beyond just wifi. I cannot find any configuration in the app for separating the radio bands or as far as I can tell, even to go in to the app to tell the system that certain devices should be on 5GHz or 2.4GHz. The 6GHz radio seems to be reserved for “backhaul”, or the connection between the nodes, but who knows, nothing is exposed in the UI. I even hoped for the ability to use the hardware as just wifi while using my other router for the wired connections, DNS and DHCP. Nope, not yet, maybe, but why is that a question at this stratospheric price point?
I get the feeling these deeper features have to be coming down the pike eventually, otherwise, this is another Luma, and if you’re even able to find Luma Wi-Fi online, you’ll see this is VERY similar, I am hoping it does not suffer the same fate. The potential is here to make a truly great system, I’ve had no hardware issues beyond the band assignment issues, which seem to have resolved themselves the longer the system runs… but without local control of the devices, this being completely cloud based, you are trusting Minim and Motorola with the entire future of your EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE network equipment – think about all of the abandoned hardware out there that becomes useless when the company goes under or just decides they’re done supporting it.
I wish the markings on the box and online marketing was clearer in describing what this system is and the bargain you are making when you buy in to this system, as that is what you are doing, you’re buying hardware that you do not have direct control over. Every other networking router or switch I have bought may have remote management -available-, but they would work just fine without having a third party intervene. This system is the opposite, you MAY NOT configure this system directly, you are entirely dependent on a third party app which could go poof or break any day, and you’ve got three giant plastic eggs.
I had my parents buy a three node Luma system years ago and now it’s plastic boxes with plugs that do nothing, I would never let them buy this one either.

I have been in need of a new router for a while. Our house was much too big for our previous router but we all adjusted to the range of the previous router. I had been thinking of just getting another single router, but a friend told me to look into a mesh system as it would probably work better in my house.
When the Motorola Q14 arrived I was a little nervous about the setup and how well it would actually work. I opened up the package connected the first node, and downloaded the app like the instructions told me to. Followed a couple steps and in about 5 minutes the first node was connected. Even easier was adding the other nodes. Just click a couple prompts on the app and scan the little barcode on the node and just like that they are added to the network.
I love the fact I have so much control over my networks now. especially the parental controls, they are so great I can create profiles and add my kids devices and set different times for them.
I can also see what they are doing on their devices and help keep them better protected.
As an electronics consumer I really enjoy how great these perform and how easy they are to set up as a parent I love these as the control they give me on my network is fantastic
I highly recommend them.

I really was looking forward to this router. Whether or not you like it will depend and I will explain. Set ups was fairly easy but it took about an hour. Set up directions were clear and easy to follow. You do have to set up each of the three separately and go through the update and set up and then doo the same for the rest. I wish they would allow you to update the firmware for all three at the same time as this process took some time. Once setup was complete, it worked and all the devices on my wifi network connected because I used the same SSID as the last router. I gave this four stars because I am giving Motorola the benefit of the doubt that it will correct my issue. I am unable to change the local network settings. I use a different local IP gateway. it comes with 192.168.2.1 and I use another. Some of my network devices have static ip addressed so if I can't change the local network settings, I will have to set up everything again. I called Motorola and was on hold for 20 minutes. They prompt you to make a selection based on your model but don't have a prompt for Q which is this model. I contacted chat who told me to select advanced network settings and then local network. Local network does not appear on my advanced network settings. They requested screen shots and confirmed I was accurate and will work with engineering to see if there is a remedy. I will not use this router if I can't change the local network settings and it is a deal breaker and will lower my start rating but they are working on it. Fingers Crossed. Other than this glitch, the router works great. Im not a fan of the fabric facing and wonder how it will look over time but that is cosmetic. Speeds were great! and the app interface was easy to use and great.

Mixed feelings about this set. The three pack came with a fast start guide that basically said install the app and follow the steps. In addition there was an additional booklet that provided more detailed information, but I decided to just use the app to set up the mesh units. That was my first mistake. The unit had two places where I could plug in the wire from my modem. I kinda assumed that it was the lower one by the power cable as the app was not showing nor telling which of the two I should select. So I plugged the network wire into the lower one and the unit would just not install. I tried two separate units, thinking that maybe one of them was bad, but got the same results, the install would stall.
I got on the chat within the app with the support and they were very responsive and helpful. After I moved the network cable to the top plug all went fine, with some caveats. Each unit had to install and firmware update and it took about 10 minutes per unit to complete. Then I found out that the renaming of the devices connected to the network does not work, they knew of the bug but did not have a projected date when that would be fixed. So basically as your devices connect to the network cannot be given unique names by you. The app offers that ability but for now it does not work.
That leads to another issue, which is that the app is unable to recognize and name devices that connect to the network. That means any device connected to the network will be identified in the app as Unknown. You have 40 devices connected to your network, they are all labeled unknown and currently you cannot change their names as they are labeled.
The list of currently connected devices also does not seem to work well. It shows devices that are not connected to the network. How you find out. Open the list of currently connected devices, then click on them and some will show as offline. So what is it, connected or not? If not connected then why is it on the connected list? Very buggy.
So my biggest complaint is that with the current version of the app (as of November 2022) you really cannot know what is actually connected to the network and what is not, you cannot custom name your devices within the app and the app ability to recognize what is connected is non-existent. Which brings the real issue, namely how can you know what is actually connected to your network. That to me is unacceptable. You should be able to know what is on your network, period.
Going back to hardware, the build quality is solid, the speeds are amazing and they all seem to work well together. I tested speeds in various areas of my house and speeds were consistent all over, no slow spots. So the hardware seems to deliver on the promise, just the software, at least for now, is bad. Hope they can fix it soon.

I required a new Wi-Fi extender since my previous one (which had served me well for years) was now showing its age and wasn’t providing the service that it used to.
I decided to give the Motorola Q14 Tri-Band a chance. I am beyond happy!
Setup:
I was expecting a tedious setup process that was going to be filled with trial, error, and frustration. I was wrong. The instructions are simple. Download the Motosync app, plug in the nodes accordingly and allow them to sync and update. Within 30 minutes, my Q14 system was up and running.
Performance and Features:
I have a PS5, Xbox Series X a laptop, and a smart TV upstairs where they cannot be connected to an ethernet cable. I depend on the Wi-Fi signal to do my work, play online, broadcast, and stream movies on my TV. I need dependable speed and where my previous nodes struggled to provide service to the upstairs for all devices, the Motorola Q14 does it with ease. They are amazing.
I never expected the number of features that are offered through the app. The Full Home Filter features Security Plus blocks sites that are deemed questionable. Ad Privacy will block ads and tracking on the connected devices. The app will let you know if there are threats to the network too.
You can also pause devices that are connected to the Q14 system. I can imagine this will be useful for parents that might want to curtail their children’s internet habits.
The Motosync app will also show Network Usage which breaks down what sites have been visited Hours/Days/Week. In my case, I recently spent a lot of time watching Twitch and Amazon videos. I noticed that as I was watching Netflix on my smart TV, there wasn’t latency for buffering to get the 4K resolution as there had been with my previous Wi-Fi nodes.
Nothing Bad to Say:
I am REALLY happy with the Motorola Q14. There’s a night and day difference between my previous node system performance and the Motorola system. And if this is your first time in the market for a Wi-Fi extender, then I honestly cannot think of a better way to introduce yourself than with the Q14.

Unpacking and set up was very easy using the app. With all new tech instructions and/or codes are available for set up. Did not take long before I was ready to use.
Design wise it reminds me of speakers because of the mesh style and shape. The style lends itself to its function, the mesh helps with keeping the unit cool and signal strength.
The WIFI in my house was not as strong because I only have the router provided by my cable company. I mentioned to my cable provider and they sent me an extender which helped a little more. it increased by one bar only. When I connected the Q14 my internet strength and speed increased dramatically as well as the reliability. The speed was clocked as high as 950 Mbps and the coverage hits my entire house. Without it it was spotty.
If you have questions or need support, Motorola is the place to call when you need help. When I called I had a set up question and the support was answered by a live person not a robot.
Overall, the design and function of the Q14 is very nice and very easy to set up and use. Very strong signal and functions well.

Long story short: if you're just using WiFi with phones/tablets/laptops over a long distance, this system is probably fine. If you have even a remotely complicated network setup, you should probably skip this system.
I was really excited to try these. We have a lot of WiFi issues at my apartment so a higher-end mesh system like this seemed like it could solve our problems. On paper, these units have a lot going for them, especially in the speed/connections department. The issue for me is in the lack of features.
The only way you can manage your network is through the app. Even if you go the router's IP address to try and log in (like you would if you had any other router), it just gives you QR codes for the iPhone and Android apps. If the app was fully featured and stable (it likes to crash - especially when opening notifications), then it wouldn't be as big of a problem. But there are just core features that you would expect in a router that are simply not present in the app. For instance: port forwarding, static IP address management, VPN support, and changing your router's IP address, to name a few. The functionality of the app more or less consists of seeing what's connected, managing access, and running speed tests. There are a few other features (like a button that takes you to Motorola's online store) but by and large, that's it. If these were cheap, I could maybe see the rationale behind that but at the price bracket these are in, it's unacceptable.
This system almost feels rushed. On paper and from a hardware perspective, these units are great. The only thing they're missing to me is a USB port and additional LAN ports (there's one per unit). The software experience is what's lacking and with a product like this, that makes this system a non-starter to even remotely tech-savy users. Unless you're just looking to have basic WiFi over a large distance, I would avoid these - and even then, I would take a good look at the competition before giving these a try.
