Customers are enthusiastic about the Shapes Mini Triangles Smarter Kit for its easy setup, vibrant colors, and modular design that allows for quick layout changes. The music sync feature is also a hit, with users appreciating how the lights respond to the beat of the music. On the downside, some users have experienced connectivity issues and find the product to be on the pricey side. Additionally, the small size of the panels and the need for improved adhesive have been mentioned as drawbacks.

Compact smart lighting makes design complete

A few years ago, I started amassing my smart lighting collection. I started with LED RGB bulbs and then moved on to more advanced equipment like the panels from Nanoleaf. At the time, the company only had light panels, but in the three years since then, Nanoleaf has increased its line of smart lighting products to include Shapes and the Canvas. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to add the Canvas to our collection, but not Shapes - until now.
Shapes are designed to allow the user to create a more flexible lighting design with the use of multiple light panel geometric shapes. These include Triangles, Hexagons, and Mini Triangles. The Mini-Triangles are the version I added. One thing to note here is that the Shapes work with other Shapes, but not with the standard Light Panels or the Canvas. They each have their own method of connecting between the individual light panels.
The Mini Triangle light panels arrived in a very informative package. The box had illustrations, photos, and main features outlined on the sides. When I opened the box I found the light panels (5), linkers (6), mounting tape (6), controller (1), mounting plate (5), and the power supply. One of the things that caught me by surprise as I was removing everything from the box was just how small the mini triangles are. They are about one-third of the size of the standard Light Panels from Nanoleaf, which are also triangular in shape. The packing list for the box states that there are mounting plates included. These plates are already pre-installed on the backs of the light panels and are designed to breakaway should you need to remove the panels from their installation site. Because the mounting plates breakaway, you should be able to remove the adhesive tape much easier than previous models of Nanoleaf’s smart lighting and thus protect your walls from unwanted damage.
Setting up the light panels is pretty easy. One thing that should be remembered is that they can’t be used with a 5Ghz Wi-Fi network. Our home network is dual-band so I didn’t have any issues with connecting. The part of this process I wasn’t thrilled about was that I had to go to Nanoleaf’s website in order to have the installation instructions. A quick start guide is included in the box, but it doesn’t actually give you the startup instructions. You will want to download the Nanoleaf app and install it from there. Yes, they are compatible with HomeKit, which I did include in the installation process, but the pairing process goes much more smoothly if you start in the Nanoleaf app.
Aside from the app, the only thing you need to get started is for one of the Mini Triangles to be mounted to the control panel and for power to be connected. Then, you only have to go to + in the My Devices menu of the app. You will select ’Shapes’ as the product and then ‘Start Pairing.’ You’ll be asked to enter or scan the pairing code and then you’ll be connected and ready to go.
The light panels are very bright, but give off a soft, smooth light. They are designed to be touch-sensitive and to react to sound - as long as they are on the right mode. They come preloaded with several scene programs, but the beauty of these lights is that you can create your own, too. I have not gone through that process yet, but I did turn on some music to see how well they reacted to sound and was impressed with how sensitive they are. I’ve seen some lights that just bounce with music, but these light panels end up dancing with music and sound. I’m thrilled with the addition of the Mini Triangles to our home. I do wish I could connect them to our existing Canvas or original Light Panels, but for now, these tiny smart lights will live on their own.

Good product but not a great starter kit

Good concept, but this package configuration didn’t make a lot of sense to me.
The first thing that frustrated me about these was when I first opened it up and tried to figure out what shape I wanted. The thing is that the connectors have to connect along a side of a triangle to the side of another triangle in perfectly matched up ways. This means that you are very limited in what shapes you can make. I tried every configuration I could think of, but ultimately if you use all 5 triangles there are only 6 shapes you can make. You can attach these shapes to your wall at different angles, but for those of us that played a lot of Tetris growing up you know that you can rotate a shape around as much as you want, but its still the same shape. If they had included the flexible connectors so you could put it around corners or even make it pop out in a more 3D shape, that would help a lot. Sadly, those connectors come separately and cost more. This left me with a bad taste in the mouth right off the bat as I felt like this starter pack was a bit of a bait and switch telling you all the endless possibilities but only giving you 6 and trying to force you into buying more units (all of the expansion packs being a bit pricy as well as to little or too much for what I really needed to let my creativity flow). In the end I settled for a simple shape that with the controller attached to the bottom look vaguely like a cat.
Once I got it set up we played around with the app, which I don’t think is very user friendly. I think they tried to find a balance between giving you a multitude of options and being user friendly, but they missed the mark on user friendly. Nanoleaf also jumped on the bandwagon for minimal included instructions to be eco-friendly, while also making it as non-language specific as possible by mostly having pictures. The result was a very confusing setup as I just tried to figure out what was going on. Online they have a much more in depth instruction page and I recommend reviewing everything there before setting up your system. For example, there are absolutely no instructions on how to use the buttons on the controller in the box, but online you find out you can quickly move to a white light mode by tapping the plus and minus buttons at the same time. I think they do have a pretty robust controller system, they need more work on their instructions.
I have Smartthings so I connected my lights to that. The connection was a breeze, which speaks to the quality of their programing, even if they don’t explain to the users super well how to use it. I also ended up mounting my lights in our main room where a picture would have hung. We’ll use it to have dancing lights when we listen to music or just let it cycle through scenes to have some fun colors in the room. Where I really let the lights shine is that we have small kids and using smartthings I can have it flash specific colors at me to let me know what is happening. For example, if they open the door to leave their room after bedtime it turns red to let me know I need to go check on them. When the motion sensors register no motion, it will turn green and let me know everyone is asleep. I do wish there was a better way to hide the plug though, but that would be asking a bit too much.
Overall the designers and programmers have done a great job with these lights. The marketing team needs to work on their instructions and a better design for what’s in the box. 5 mini lights in a starter pack just feels lame. I do wish there was a better way to hide the plug though, but that would be asking a bit too much. 3 stars overall. 1 star for creativity in a product, 1 star for connectivity to smart home systems and 1 star for the real potential they have here. Minus 1 star for the instructions and another star for putting together a starter pack that just doesn’t make sense.

They come in different shapes such as Hexagons, Canvas (which are fancy squares), Triangles, and Mini Triangles. With their new updated 2.0 version you are now able to attach them together using the updated linkers and mounting plates to make up whatever amorphous or definite shape or shapes you want. So, you’re only limited by your own creativity and how much extra cash you have lying around. I got the Mini Triangles set that comes with 5 panels, and am incredibly limited artistically, so I made a line that I’m quite proud of (pictured). I also made this thing that looks like Batman (also pictured) that if you squint and use some imagination you can see it. That I technically stole from a piece of paper that recommends different shapes that came in the box.
Each of these panels supports over 16 million colors with the addition of adjustable light temperatures between 1200K – 6500K. Which I love. As the colors themselves are very accurate, can get quite dim or very bright (especially if you have a ton of them), and with the ability to adjust for color temperature you get whites that look white along with good oranges and night light colors.
BUILD QUALITY/EASE OF USE:
The instructions it comes with are more like hieroglyphics. Showing basic pictures of how everything is supposed to go together and only includes the parts that are obvious and completely ignore the fine details that most may have questions about. With a bit of tinkering you can figure out which holes go with which plugs.
Regarding their App. I’m not a fan. I don’t find it to be intuitive and it is extremely busy. The features I expect it to have it does not, or it is buried so deep that I can’t find it. When you’re charging a premium for a product, I expect it to perform at that same level and when it doesn’t it’s no longer a shrug it off sort of thing and becomes completely unacceptable.
One cool feature of the app is the “Layout Assistant”. This is buried in settings instead of being on the main screen. Which is only one of many things they do wrong with the app. This assistant allows you to create whatever shape you want with all their products and then you can use AR to put it up on the wall to see how it looks. It could still use some work as the controls are clunky. But I’m happy this is a thing.
There is no simple way to change the light to a color you want in the app. Which blows my mind. How you can have a light and make it difficult to adjust the color because you bury it behind several different menus and options, will forever allude me. This is a massive fail to me. It could also be I’m just too stupid to figure it out. Which still makes it a fail as it shouldn’t be something that I can accidently miss. Anyways, enough of the app before I have an aneurism. It needs a ton of work to get to the point where I would say it’s ready for this expensive of a product. I’m just happy my phone made it out in one piece and I still have most of my hair.
Thankfully, you can bypass the entire app by utilizing your smart assistants. Which include Google, Alexa, and Siri. This worked well for me. So, no complaints there.
Moving onto the panels themselves. They feel solid and well built. However, they are lightweight (which is good since you’ll be hanging them) and are made completely out of plastic which makes me concerned on how well they would hold up if they were dropped or fell off the wall onto a hard floor. I have noticed no give on the panels themselves and as mentioned previously the RGB and color temperature is superb. The tinkers go in with a solid snap, but there is some looseness and give there that when putting large amounts of these together would worry me a bit. So, don’t skimp on the adhesives. You can buy additional adhesive and/or clips if one breaks from their website for $10.
The power brick is huge! Which seems unnecessary when you have 5 mini lights like me. But makes more sense when you realize this can power up to 100 lights.
CONCLUSION:
The main purpose for these is accent lighting and the ability to setup a vibe. Of which they do a great job. With how bright they can get you could use also use them for unique main lighting. As the RGB and color temperatures are incredibly accurate and can go from very dim to extremely bright. Especially, when pairing several of them together. They also have multiple uses. Such as an individual art piece, as accent lighting to add depth or color to a room. Or to even highlight a shelf, picture, or product. Additionally, you can use it to enhance your media by using it around or surrounding your TV or monitor. Or to add cool effects while rocking out to some music. But that uses the microphone on the control panel or an app on your computer to work correctly. Last, when you’re done for the night you can use it as a nightlight. Overall, between the amount of shapes you can make and the places you can put them they have nearly endless possibilities. However, the app is not good. It works well but it is incredibly busy and hard to use. Since so much of this product is reliant on that I find this to be a massive flaw. Kind of like the small hole that blew up the Death Star. As the Death Star was epic but was also easily destroyed. So, between that and needing to drop some series Benjamin’s on them I think that it will deter a ton of users from either picking them up in the first place or utilizing them to their fullest. So, for me, unless if you have a very specific use for them, and/or have a bunch of extra cash lying around and are willing to figure out an app, or bypass it completely and use your smart assistants for control it is a pass for me. As I just cannot get over the cost because it’s too excessive.

Color and Light and Your Own Creativity

Nanoleaf Shapes, Mini Triangles Smarter Kit is a 6-piece kit with 5 LED panels and a control strip. It lets you explore color and light through an infinite combination that can even be synced to any genre of music. The LED Mini Panels are all shaped as equilateral triangles with a connection slot on each side. The connection pieces (also included in the kit) easily allow for numerous configurations by snapping and connecting the triangular pieces. With the synchronization of the app, colors, intensity of colors, patterns and rhythm can all be configured to make lighting for any mood imaginable. Lighting can be created to be used as ambient lighting or functional lighting, but in any case, the product results in a decorative accent for any space. Additional ‘add-on’ packages and accessories such as a remote and rhythm connector can also be purchased and added, each allowing for more creativity to be employed and more elaborate designs to be created.
At first, I had a difficult time pairing the connection strip to the app on my iPhone. I am not sure whether it was the phone or product, but it did take an unusual amount of time to Bluetooth the two and sync the product to the app. Once I accomplished this task discovery of the product really began. It was not until I saw the depth of the app’s design did, I realize that my own creativity was probably my only limitation with this product as the app allows for an infinite combination of all colors or hues of the color wheel, tints and shades of each and the variation of each’s intensity. Designs can be saved as scenes and rhythm patterns designated for each design. Through use of the app, the product can be synced to Alexa, Google Assistant, Smart Things and IFITT. It can also be configured to be controlled by touch.
This is a unique product in that it can add decorative ambient or functional lighting while taxing one’s creative abilities. It is useful art and can be exhibited as such.

I got the Nanoleaf Shapes - Mini Tirangles Smarter Kit (5pk) as a starter lighting kit instead of Christmas lights…lol. This kit includes 5 identical flat equilateral triangles that are about 4.5” in length. They can interconnect with each other on any of the 3 sides with the provided linkers. There aren’t that many designs you can do with only 5 triangles, but it’s a good start and you can add another triangle kit or other compatible shapes. The more amazing thing is the 16+ million colors they can display with a wide range of white light temperatures and brightness. The panels can also react to music and touch or be setup with many of the preset themes or custom themes - the possibilities are only limited by your imagination. You must use the smartphone app to pick the themes or customize the light scenes. There are 9 color scenes and 7 rhythm scenes playlists and you can create your own as well. The printed quick guide that comes in the box doesn’t help much, just go to their website for more information on how to setup/pair the App with the panels. I had a hard time manually pairing them, but once I used NFC and touched the controller with my Android phone, it paired quickly and recognized my Wi-Fi network, etc. Unfortunately the App kept crashing on me, so I couldn’t test as much as I would have liked. My Galaxy S20 Ultra does run the latest Android 11 OS, so perhaps there are some compatibility issues. All in all, an interesting concept that is bound to brighten up any room for many different occasions, but quite pricey.

Nanoleaf! what cool weirdness!

Well its Christmas so why not right? LED lights making cool shapes! Actually these proved to be a lot more fun then I expected. My wife made fun of me for making weird sounds to check how the lights would respond to my voice (they follow along with music or voice in one of the settings). And then after noticing the coolness she started making weird noises too to make them dance for her.
Now besides the fun aspect of the lights, They are actually very elegant looking, I have them set with apple and they turn on around 7:00 with some bright morning colors for two hours then turn into a cooler cocoa look. (all these are light settings already in the app so nothing I created). At night I have a starry night setting which is bluer hues especially considering they are on a wall on top of my fish tank.
Installation was a breeze and the app is awesome and so easy to set up. It even helps you by letting you send it straight to your apple home or android version etc.
One issue:
If you make the mistake like me and change your wifi password while already having the nanoleaf lights set up you will need to delete the existing lights from the app and re setup. The way to do a soft reset or hard reset is to press the power button and the + and hold for 10 seconds or until you see the control lights flashing. It was not a major issue and only caused by my wifi change of password but it can easily be fixed by checking youtube or doing a search online...
Overall I really like this accent and will be buying more!

Randomly stopped working after 11 months

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
These are REALLY cool looking. I'll give them that. However, troubleshooting issues is a nightmare. Sometimes they just randomly have connectivity issues and become "unreachable" from the app. The app itself is pretty bad and tends to have connectivity issues.
I enjoyed these with minimal issues for 11 months until they just decided to randomly turn a dim white and stay that way for no apparent reason at all. I've tried both soft and hard resets with no results. I've tried placing the controller and power source module on different panels. Nothing. Unplugging and plugging them back in also results in the same dimly lit state. So now I effectively have a $120 wall decoration that does nothing and is seemingly bricked. Massively disappointed with this.
As cool as they look, they just aren't worth the price and hassle of troubleshooting WHEN--not if--issues arise. I give these a generous 2 stars overall, but I feel like they're really 1-1.5 stars with all the issues these tend to have. These would be the absolute GOAT if it weren't for the technical issues that commonly happen.
