If you have a big area to cover with wifi and 1 router isn't enough then this extender is probably for you. Where I went wrong was that I wanted to increase the signal level in our family room. At the time I could only get 1 bar out of 3 from my router, but adding this didn't help. It isn't what it is designed to do. You really need to use it for areas where you don't get ANY signal from your existing router. It creates a separate SSID that your devices will not automatically switch to if they still see the standard router. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, not because I didn't understand how it was supposed to be used, but because of throughput. Once I had it installed I ran speed tests on both my router & the extender connections. Even though the router was at a low signal level it still pulled in almost 90 Mbps whereas the extender with 100% signal was averaging around 5 Mbps. I ended up returning it.

I was very surprised when the router I bought for our home was not powerful enough to reach all the way to our room. I have always supported the Netgear name, so I decided to stick with them and just get a WiFi Booster for our home. I am so happy I did because it has allowed all of our devices to work with peak performance and functionality. Only reason it is getting 4-Stars and not 5-Stars, is due to the fact that I even need this device in the first place. I live in a mobile home, not a 4 story mansion. Nonetheless, it is well worthy of a 5-Star due to how it has made internet use in my home easier and stress-free!

Placed this on our first floor because Century Link router was in basement and was not getting enough signal to the second floor. Was very easy to setup just follow the directions and now we have coverage everywhere.

Read several reviews on ac1200 great reviews, I also realized it's built on the other side of the planet. The English instructions are very important to those of us that are not millennials, the instructions are ok but when it tells you to put this unit next to you main modem / Router it never says take a cat 5e cable and connect the two together.luckily I remembered something that I saw on YouTube while researching it so after watching a millennial hook them together . I tried, bam worked great. Next step take your new netgear to a point in the house where I still get a stronge signal and it will amplify the wireless signal further, now this is not a problem in my home, one level 1350 sq. Ft. I needed 3 xtra cat 5 plugs so again YouTube reviews said if you need xtra cat5e plugins this netgear ac1200 not only gives you 5 but boost your wireless needs along way, I started thinking my new 20'X30' barn I could send signals out there for my cnc wood working machine bonus!! So for some reason maybe I skip a part, which I've redone 6 times now wifi will disconnect 7 out of every 10 times I turn our cell phones or iPads, laptops etc. etc. now the devices plugged into the ports on back of the netgear ac1200... Apple TV , roku4 , DVR, tivo, all these devices have to be " digitally " reconnected evertime I want to watch tv. I have sent a help e-mail into netgear services , for them to call me.. I hate, Waiting on some who sells me something after they get their money it's zero customer service , or customer service out of Antarctica. Also along with this ac1200 I ordered 3 cat5e cables 3 ft long I got 2 of them and I couldn't get the third one to work on anything but I did start looking closer I noticed that the cord was 6 ft. Long , but that shouldn't have made a difference looking at the pack the last cable came in it was some special high class cat 6 blah , blah , Captain Kirk, special wire only , I'm just not up to speed on the jargon on today's tech. But I know as my grandpa Roebuck always told me,yes he was the grandson of the Roebuck of Sears Roebuck & Company est.1886.
Fool your customer once That's bad business , fool him twice you just lost a future patron. I think about that every time I buy anything that's going to have to have follow up customer care interaction. From having a house built , to buying a car or just a piece of computer paraphernalia..

What an amazing difference!
I bought this as a replacement for a Linksys RE2000 extender which died after about 9-months of use. Yes, I realize this model is twice as fast as the RE2000 (600 vs 1200); however, the Linksys never performed up to expectations.
You'll find more than 1-web page out there that rates this one as the best performer currently available and I agree. The set-up was super easy as I was up & running in under 10-minutes. I'm not a network engineer but am pretty tech savvy as I have set-up several routers & wireless access points of my own and for family over that past several years. Didn't need that knowledge here. Its just that easy.
Get it set-up & running using the basic set-up. Once you're satisfied its working be sure to follow the instructions for the Fastlane set-up which uses both bands to optimize video streaming. This is what really solved my problems as Netflix was constantly stalling on one my TVs in the far end of my house. I no longer have this problem.
Yes, this one is more expensive but its true; you get what you pay for!

Powerful wifi range extender with FastLane support

I have been very impressed with the Netgear AC1200 range extender. Although it is truly a dual band extender, it also offers a FastLane mode that allows me to offer 2.4Ghz WiFi to all my devices & guests but pipeline it back through a high bandwidth 5Ghz dedicated wireless connection to my wireless router. This not only supports both my newer and older devices (those that are not 5Ghz capable) but affords much higher bandwidth than a typical 2.4Ghz access point or single band extender offers. The signal strength from this unit is great, and by carefully placing the extender I have doubled the reach of my WiFi across a wide house while also offering 5 wired Ethernet connectors to accommodate a remotely located desktop computer, Ethernet printer and a couple of HDTVs that are not WiFi capable. The built-in Genie management software is great; Smart Setup is easy to use and affords quick & easy configuration, but there are sufficient advanced options to really tweak settings and tailor operation to your needs. I love being able to bring up the software simply by typing mywifiext.net into the browser of a connected device to access the Genie software. A status screen shows signal strength and was invaluable as I moved the unit to different locations to get the best possible signal link to the main router. Thanks to this extender I now have high bandwidth WiFi throughout my house, and can simultaneously watch multiple Apple TV units and stream Netflix from smart TVs without buffering pauses; I would buy another of these without hesitation!

Needed a boost to my home wifi signal which fades in far from router areas of my single story 4br house, especially on the 5ghz band. Most of my devices are newer and support the 5 band, but were held down to the 2.4ghz band due to poor signal quality thru walls and distance. This extender setup easy out of the box when paired with my home gateway router and provides full coverage across my home for both bands. The result is now most of my devices are enjoying the better throughput on the 5ghz band and speed tests yield nearly 100% of my subscribed bandwith from my ISP. I would give this 5 stars if the following items were better addressed: After setup, the url specified for logging into the extender doesn't always work and lands on an error page with workarounds that don't seem to work, requiring knowledge of the extender's assigned IP from my gateway...and the advertised wifi analytics app for this extender is limited to android devices in the fine print....should be an apple app out there for this too. Would be good too if this could "mesh" with my home gateway so devices auto-switch when the signal is better from either the gateway or extender...a feature I've seen work on other similar or lower priced extenders.

Needing a device to extend my wifi at my home, since my IP Router sits upstairs. I was getting one or two bar max downstairs. After adding the Netgear AC1200 wifi extender downstair I now have full bar reception every where downstair.
If your router is dual band, the Netgear AC 1200 supports dual band. So I can keep my two wifi band separated even downstairs.
Great buy! Easy to follow direction, I recommend this to anyone trying to get better coverage in and around their house.

Very Fast Repeater

My old repeater was literally dying. My connections were timing out or just not going anywhere. The lights on the front starting flaming out one at a time until I figured it was time for an upgrade. It was a good repeater which lasted about 5 years---so no complaints about it's performance. Now, movin' on to the next repeater. I wanted to try a different brand and got word from friends that Netgear had some good, reliable products. I was a bit hesitant because i haven't had a Netgear product in years! However, I decided to give them another try and so far I'm satisfied with what I purchased. This unit was very easy to setup and install. I actually installed this for a pastor and his wife in their home and they are satisfied with the connections they get throughout their home and outside. No dead spots for them. In my case, this new repeater was giving me loads more Mbps than my last repeater. For reasons that took me days to figure out, I would lose the connection. I'd look at the lights on the front of the unit and the 2.4Ghz light would be green, then go to red, then to orange and back to green intermittedly. I thought it was a bad unit and started to give Netgear a call when I tried one more step. I unplugged my CenturyLink modem for about 2 minutes, plugged it back in and that solved the problem!! The repeater has been stable since. I don't know why that happened but glad I fixed it. Overall, this unit doesn't disappoint.

I asked a geek squad associate which extender would be the best for my size house. i explained that the Comcast modem/router is downstairs and I don't have much WiFi upstairs. He recommended this one based on ease of use, setup and effectiveness. It is very easy to setup and it does the job perfectly. Now this extender is also downstairs a few rooms away from the modem and I have a perfect signal upstairs. It is expensive, but is very easy to use and setup and it works.

Having previously used the small wifi extender recommended by Comcast and not been happy with its performance (or short life!), this extender works very well. Our signal enters the front of the house, but TV and tablet are used in the back. This extender provides steady wifi so our Amazon Fire Stick has no hiccups or slowdowns. The only downside is that it must sit on a surface with a cord to the power outlet, unlike the small one that hung directly from the outlet.
