This is an Upgrade on a D5100.I like the GPS and WiFi option and the fact that it is a little lighter in weight. The WiFi setup was easy as long as you follow instructions in the manual. I got a great deal at BestBuy when I bought the camera and a Nikon 18-140 lens together..Thanks BB

D5300 convinced me to leave Canon after 25 years

I've been a Canon user for more than 25 years, going back to the 35mm days and up through the whole DSLR revolution. I own multiple Canon lenses and accessories and I've taken literally hundreds of thousands of shots with Canons. After shooting the D5300, I am selling off my Canon gear and going Nikon. The camera feels solid and durable. Its weight is comparable to the Canon 4Ti (one of my previous issues with Nikons was their weight#. Ergonomically I prefer the Canon to the D5300 #particularly the right side# but the difference is minor . . . the D5300 just feels much better to shoot. The real difference for me is the metering and focus. The D5300 has 39 metering points compared to the 4Ti's nine . . . what a huge difference that makes. I find that I am compensating on exposure FAR less with the Nikon than I ever had to with the Canon, and the focus gets fooled very rarely. More accurate RAW images means less post-processing and fewer bad shots, and it didn't take long for me to see the difference. The lens that came with this kit is the 18-140, which is a terrific range for the vast majority of your shooting situations. The Nikon's 1.5 magnification factor is a little better than the Canon's 1.6 so your lower end isn't as badly affected. And the lens has the same quality feel and function as the camera. It takes beautiful shots, clear and sharp. I also added the Sigma 10-20 lens and the Nikon 55-300 to give me the full range I need. Both of the lenses work very well #55-300 does have significant vignetting) and both were remarkably affordable - another of my gripes with Nikon is the cost of lenses, but that isn't necessarily the case any more. The bottom line - the Nikon D5300 takes wonderful shots with accurate metering and focus, and it just feels like a better quality camera. The difference between the D5300 and the Canon 4Ti is so significant that I'm abandoning a quarter century of brand loyalty and a half dozen lenses to make the switch. THAT should tell you something.

    Love this camera!

I upgraded from a Nikon D3200 and this camera fit the bill! Fantastic lens. I love how I no longer have to carry around two lenses because this one does the job. I was leaning towards a Canon T5i but I'm beyond thrilled that I spent the extra money for the wifi and stuck with Nikon. It makes sharing photos with family and friends so easy and quick, I don't even bring out my computer anymore. Fantastic camera and very easy to use, love all the features.

After using a point and shoot for years it was time to upgrade to a DSLR. I was tired of the lag between shots and image quality was ok, but not great for blowing pictures larger. This Nikon D5300 is easy to use. It shoots fast and is easy to change the settings. I bought this camera for its size, wifi capabilities and gps. I would've liked a full frame camera but, don't want to carry it around on vacations. This was a good compromise. I also purchased a 50mm and an 85mm prime lens and am very happy with those. The 18-140 that comes with is a nice telephoto lens when you don't want to use your feet to catch the shot. The sales people at Best Buy were very helpful and patient with all my questions!

I am a beginner and could not have expected any thing better to start with. The settings are very simple to understand and you will quickly learn how to make changes. With my recommendation already 2 friends bought it and are equally happy with the quality. Icing over the cake is its wifi feature, you can connect your phone, view it on your phone and then click the picture. Gone are the days when you had to set a timer and run to pose along with your friends or family. Definitely recommend this product.

We purchased this camera for ourselves 6 months ago and loved it. We took it on our trip to Alaska and it worked beautifully. My husband owns a Nikon D80 with a 18-200 lens and a 55-300 lens. My D5300 was excellent for almost all of our shots. We used the 55-300 to get the whale shots. Last fall, our daughter asked to use our camera to take pictures of their son playing soccer. They loved the camera so much, particularly the 18-140 lens so it could zoom to catch closer shots. They requested it as their Christmas gift from us so this was our second purchase of this camera. It is an outstanding camera and value. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality DSLR camera.

This camera takes great pictures and is easy for beginners to use and learn from. Do yourself a favor and purchase the AF-S NIKKOR 35 mm lens 1:1.8G as well to take indoor and low light photos. The view finder doesn't entirely represent the scope if the picture with the DX format, however it is easy to become accustomed to. We live the built in wifi for easy uploading to tablets or smart phones.

I bought this camera after looking at a Sony and a Canon. After holding them all in my hand only one fit perfectly so I bought it, the Nikon D5300 and I Love It! Does more than I thought it would (effects) and the photos are prefect, never blurry even at long distances (with a 18-140 lens). The Wifi is awesome, just put the camera on a tripod and go sit in the car and take the photo with the app on my smart phone when it is cold, (I like to take cold weather sunset photos in New England)!

I got this camera as an upgrade to my beloved D5100 so the bar was pretty high and so this review is often D5100 vs. D5300. I'll be frank. The D5300 outclasses the D5100 so substantially that it has utterly obsoleted the D5100. Ignore those who say that the D5300 merely provides an opportunity to pick up a D5200 or D5100 for a bargain price. No. The D5300 is now the ONLY camera in the Nikon D5xxx line. It has changed the game

D5300 Digital SLR Camera with 18-140mm VR lens

I just purchased D5300 Digital SLR with 18-140 mm VR lens at Best Buy. I have to say that customer service at Best Buy is excellent. Originally I bought same camera with 18-55 and 50-300 mm lens, but was not happy with the heavy weight of the 50-300 lens. So I returned the lens and camera and repurchased the same camera with 18-140mm lens. The whole process was simple thanks to Best Buy customer service reps. The 18-140 mm lens is great as it has wide angle and decent distant shootings. I used to carry both 18-55 and 50-300 lens, but now 18-140 mm can do the job of both other lens.

This is a great DSLR for the intermediate photographer that wants to have a DSLR that is not in Nikon's lowest tier. If you want to spend more for a full frame DSLR I recommend doing that. If full frame is not important to you then skip it. This product comes with the new kit lens. It's great but you are going to want to invest in more lenses, so think about that when you before you buy. You should also think about a tri- or monopod, a case for you camera and lenses, a remote for shooting photos at a distance without using a timed delay, a speed light, and maybe a shotgun mic. This camera is an investment and if you really want to get the most out of it, you should think about the total cost including these optional items. Otherwise, save your money and use your smartphone camera. HA!

Easy to use and takes good pictures. I hope to get a new lens soon. However to focus for me is a little tricky and frustrating at times but over all a good camera for a person just starting to get into photography.

This camera is truly wonderful. Quality is crisp and the functionality is modern. The lens has a wide range and is suitable for any situation for a beginner. Apart from the top screen which is not included in this model, every other feature is completely worth it for this price.

I really enjoy the camera and its effect options. It has great zoom and night shots. The sketch option makes a really cool, lightly sketched photo. The additional extended lens helps a person focus on objects further in the distance.
