Had to replace my Denon AVR 987 so I could support the new ARC HDMI protocol with my new Sony TV - it’s about the only one that still supports upscale from RGB to push to HDMI. Easy setup and plenty of upgrades for a total tech home.

Sound quality is excellent . I just bought it really to try it out cause I already have a 1600 dollar pioneer elite SC-95 and let me say this Onkyo in my opinion out performs my pioneer for twice the cost . Atmos and DTS-X movies sound so much better I was wowed by the difference . So much more sound it’s amazing . Easily worth the price to have a awesome sounding Atmos system. Mine is set up 5.2.4 with Klipsh Reference Premiere speakers and I’m really happy .

I bought this to replace an old Onkyo RC-160 receiver. It was still working, but I wanted to upgrade my receiver and be able to enjoy Dolby Atmos. What can I say? this receiver is a beast. My room is 20'x 25' I didn't change the speakers at all and the sound is a lot more crisp and clear and definitely louder. I'm using a 7.2.2 configuration and I'm supper happy with it. I got it on sale with an Amazon price match and it was worth it. If you are big on sound, clarity and have a decent budget, this is definitely the one to go for. My next option was to get a 7.2.4 set up, but at $1,300 that receiver went above my budget.

I almost purchased the Pioneer VSX-LX303 but, then I came across a clearance deal on this Onkyo TX-NR787 from another local store. Since up until a few weeks ago Onkyo owned Pioneer, both are comparable. I would've preferred the Pioneer only for it's ability to upscale video to 4K. However, I called Best Buy, told them of the competitor pricing, they verified and price matched. Sweet! This is the third Onkyo receiver I've owned over the past 15 years and as expected this one does not disappoint. I am now running a 7.2.2 setup. Ran the multipoint calibration and wow! I had no idea what a difference Atmos makes. I have read elsewhere of complaints of voice dialog being too low on the center channel even after calibration. This is easily resolved by increasing the decibel value under the menu option for level. Aside from this, this receiver packs a punch. My suggestion, if you are looking for a mid level THX Select 9.2 receiver and not looking for additional channel preouts, get this before it's gone as these are selling out, as they are clearanced at this time in favor of the newer 2019 model replacing it. And as always, thank you Best Buy!

I have an existing 7.1 theater setup. In order to add Atmos support, I will need minimum of 9.1 Atmos receivers. Majority of such receivers are well into > $1000 range. This receiver is half the price and still offers many of the same features. The setup and menu systems are simple and easy to use. I also like the fact that there is no video upscaling or processing, a feature I often need to disable in my previous receivers. I setup mine as 7.1.2 and both Atmos and DTS:X suounds fantastic. I had some trouble playing Google Cast audio on zone 2 automatically while leaving main zone playing other audio sources. But I don't use cast feature much. You can't go wrong with this receiver for the money.

This Onkyo TX NR787 was an open box deal. Normally retailing for @$649- I got it for $503+tax. So I was able to purchase this 9.2 channel THX certified surround theater Dolby rated receiver for the price of a top of the line 7.2 system but with two more channels of 100w@8ohms so this system really has 900w@8ohms and then two preamp subwoofer outs for subs-also at 8 ohms but most likely not 100w but rather modulated by the volume controller on the Onyo unit so as to prevent the sub(s) from out competing the mains.. Great sound in all of its modes. I love all the extra channels beacause I'm not using it for home theater but to run and feed many components of a massive 40,000watt pa system. And it's well connected with every media stream format or inputs you can conceive. Great Unit! 6 out of 5 stars ******!

I wanted a new receiver to replace my Pioneer Elite SC-85. It is a 9.2 channel receiver and passes 4K and yet it lacks HDCP 2.2 so no HDR10 or Dolby Vision. The SC-85 was $1600 when new. I picked up this receiver for 500 bucks and have been extremely impressed by its performance. I am amazed by how great this receiver sounds for both movies and music. If you’re looking for an AVR, do yourself a big favor and check this one out. These”s a reason Sound & Vision voted this a “Top Value”.

Originally I had bought a pioneer elite 7.2 system and the sound was excellent but after a week I thought I about adding more speakers and with this receiver I couldn't but I found this 9.2 system at a very affordable price and since Onkyo bought Pioneer they share many of the technology I thought this would be a great buy. It really doesn't disappoint it has excellent sound and dolby atmos on a 9.2 setup is pretty awesome.

Purchased this when my Pioneer Elite suddenly went up in smoke - Black Friday deal - it powers all my speakers adequately for my 7.1.2 Atmos system - easy to set-up and use - my only complaint was when we had a cable box, it always selected TV as the input when we turned it on (Cable was connected to Cable/Sat) - cut the "cord" on cable 6 months ago and the AVR has worked flawlessly since - so I suspect it was something with the Cable box, not the Onkyo itself.

This is an amazing receiver. It has capabilities I'll never use but those I do use are top notch. I don't believe you can beat it for the price. I needed a unit capable of hooking up 9 ceiling fixtures. I was looking at prices anywhere from $1300 to 2500. This was a real steal at $700.00. Even the Geek was impressed at what it can do. When he found out what I paid he said he was going to get one for himself! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone.

Long time Yamaha fan, still using some of my old home theater receivers from 1995, 2005 and they all work great. 2013 unit not so much. Needed a replacement STAT and did not like what I saw from Yamaha. Onkyo had the specs and this open box unit had the price. So far its a great unit with no issues. Running 7.1 with Ruku, Xbox, Ps4 on a Samsung Q70

Had some issues getting ARC to function properly. Got resolved with assistance of Onkyo customer service. Some controls are somewhat buried and some default settings caused issues. Everything has a learning curve. It found MyCloud HD to stream my digital audio easily. Set it up in a 5.2.4 height configuration. ( the 2 subs really are 1 ch.) Still experimenting with bass management settings. It was one of a few that also had phono inputs.

You will not find another amp with 9 ch. at this price point. It has everything an entry level receiver should have. Sounds very good too. The only 2 cons I have are that GUI lacks an upgrade, I am still searching for some feature on GUI. Second- it is not a true 2 subwoofer output even though it has 2 sub outs at the back. It just divides 1 signal into 2 subwoofers.

The 1st Onkyo 5.1 I’ve ever owned 25 years ago is where it all started for me. Sales guy showed me side by side comparison of the Onkyo 5.1 to other top brands at same volume level and tone set to flat. Onkyo won hands down with power and clean sound so I bought it on the spot. Watched my 1st dvd in surround at home and was hooked ever since. I’ve owned six different Onkyo receivers thought out my life now I bought a new TCL 6 series 75” smart tv. I hooked up to my older tx-sr605 Onkyo a/v receiver and that where the problems started. The hdmi arc would not work for tv audio. Only toslink fiber would work for sound to the receiver. After buying the Onkyo tx-nr 797 a/v receiver it solved all of my audio hdmi audio problems for the tv. So with 9.2 channel I bi-amped my front B&W tower speakers for more power. Well worth the effort. Connected the B&W center and connected two front definitive technology height speakers along with two Yamaha full range rear surround speakers. My 20 year old Valodyne ct10 bi-rca wired subwoofer pushes the low end for now. Two Svs pb2000 subwoofers on the way when I can afford them.

I did a decent amount of research before buying a receiver. I'm happy with this one. I'm not the most technologically advanced person but it has a bunch of good features. I liked the built in Google Chromecast and all of the HDMI inputs. It has a good amount of power as well.

This Onkyo receiver is a beast! Being that it has nine channels and can output Dolby Atmos, you can run either a 5.2.4 or 7.1.2 speaker set up. I like the idea of having 4 height speakers for Dolby Atmos. Great receiver and excellent calibration system.
