My experience with the NR 7100 is not good.
The unit has major HDMI switching issues that need to be addressed quickly. When changing from DVD back to cable TV, the video plays but the sound disappears. And I don't get the sound back unless I rurn the TV off and on - and even then there's an ubcomfortable delat. The fact is whenever I turn the NR7100 on I have no idea whether it will work or not.
The bluetooth digital display remains fixed on the first song I play even when I change songs. The music changes, but the display stays fixed on the first song.
Watching TV apps, like Netflix or Amazon is iffy. Video works, but sound gets lost or plays thru the TV speakers which can't find an external audio system AKA, the NR7100. HUH?
Oh boy. And as for the calibration system, the famed Dirac Live, you can't download from Dirac, but must use the scaled down Onkyo licensed versions. And good luck trying to figure out the microphone placement for full, nine position calibration. Who drew that confusing diagram?
I downloaded the full 191 page manual, which lacks commonsene explanations for setting up basic functions. I'm not an engineer and I doubt most buyers are either. One hundred and ninety-one pages?
It's new and I still have a few days to decide if I want to keep this unit. I really do want to keep it, but for $1,100,00 I don't know if "hoping" for the best makes sense, when Marantz is right around the cirner.
Fair warning.
Problems, problems, problems. My assessment? This receiver is not quite ready for prime time.
When it finds its way, the sound is good. The set up screens are pretty easy to navigate and the customer service is quite good. But in truth, having called rwice, even the reps seemed a little baffled that things weren't working as they shoukd.
Look AV receivers should be intuitive and ready to identify and switch HDMI inputs, which the NR7100 isn't ready to do.

The Greatest Receiver I’ve Ever Owned!!!

I recently bought this Onkyo receiver And I got to tell you all this is the greatest receivers I’ve ever owned!!! My biggest recommendation is to mate this receiver with some Klipsch Dolby Atmos speakers and you’re really get some great sound!!! In fact you can choose in the settings menu that your brand of speakers is Klipsch. And if you get Jurassic World Dominion on 4K Blu-ray, that movie has DTS X Instead of Dolby Atmos with a Klipsch Subwoofer, oh my God now you will have a mini theater in your house!!! I have two Klipsch 12” powered subwoofers with this receiver.I really recommend this receiver to anybody who is a fan of theater surround sound. The only drawback that I could say is if you are coming off of a Onkyo TX-NR777 this receiver is not as loud as that one. Where the 777 is on volume at 30 on the 7100 you’ll need to put it to 40. But other than that this is a really great receiver!!!

May have issues with your setup

While this may work perfectly for your setup, it's been nothing but issues for me. I've been without it for 3 months now since it's been in service via Geek Squad. Status has been stuck in waiting for parts for over 1 month now. Main issues were loss of audio (unplugging/plugging power would resolve for a bit, but would happen again later), and OSD not showing up.
Also had video loss on my Xbox Series X when connected to the AVR. (No video issues when XSX connected to TV (LG C2) instead). I suspected it was an issue with eARC and/or HDMI-CIC, but still had issues with those disabled and the only device connected directly to the AVR was an Nvidia Shield Pro.
Unfortunate since this has a ton of great features and is a great value when it's on sale. It's just too finicky for some setups. If/when I ever get this back from service, if the issues persist, I'll replace with a non-Onkyo AVR.

Overall a decent receiver. I feel like it’s kind of under powered but the sound quality is definitely there. I honestly should’ve just bought a Denon 3800h. I like their UI better.

Works well, seems to be bug free so far. HDMI signal switching is much faster than my old NR747, and auto standby works as it should. Fan is silent IME.
Only thing I miss from my earlier Onkyo is the small Atmos or DTS:X lights to show when that format is being used. You have to use the info overlay, which is a bit annoying when you are trying to figure out if the streaming service is working properly

Great Onkyo Dolby Atmos!

While the Dolby Surround effects are great, the Atmos feature brings it up to a totally different level of production and localization of sounds. The helicopters in Civil War actually fly right out toward me, above my head and behind to the right.
Sound actually matches the action of the movie. Point to note: my atomos speakers are on the floor, under a 8 foot ceiling, next to my towers speakers approximately 16 feet away from my listening position. I couldn’t ask for more from this Onkyo TX-NR 7100 AV Receiver.

I have both an RZ50 for one room and an NR7100 for another. Unless you need the preouts and Zone 3 of the RZ50, put side any FOMO that would make you spend several hundred more for the RZ line. The sound quality is good out of the box, but extraordinary with the included Dirac Live. For best results with Dirac, I would consider buying a high quality USB measurement microphone

Great reciever, I'm very happy after 2 months of use. I had a 12 year old Denon before this one, and the 7100 is amazing. I got it for the audio upgrade (I'm still running a standard HD TV right now). I use this for stereo and movie duty, about 50/50. The app is great to do quick adjustments for the sub and center channel levels. Atmos is real nice, and the DTS neuralX does a good job when there is no Atmos. Dirac can be a bit fiddly, but it allows some real in depth tuning with a calibrated mic and a laptop. One tip is to level match the channels after calibration. Some of them were a few dB quiet.

I purchased the Onkyo TX-NR7100 to replace my Onkyo TX-NR686, it had all the features I wanted but I had nothing but problems. I exchanged it two times. During the initial setup I tried to perform the DIRAC Live calibration using the phone app. With the first two units the included MIC stopped working will performing the calibration. With the third unit I decided to use the Windows app instead of the phone app. I was able to complete the initial setup.
Issues experienced with all unit:
Onscreen display would not always come on, unplugging the power would get it to work for a little while.
Consistently received no signal messages when switching inputs. It would intermittently lose signal once signal was established.
Audio in the second zone would be out of sync with the main and cause an echoing effect.
I had none of these issues with my TX-NR686, so I return the third unit for a refund.
What I had connected to AVR: Blu-ray player, Computer, Fire TV Stick, NVIDIA SHIELD and Verizon cable box.

I liked it and it worked well. Especially liked the remote, but in the end I needed a model that had preouts for another powered amplifier so I had to return. If you don’t need preouts then this is a great model. It has good sound and is easy to setup. Heard so many great things about Dirac bu I didn’t really notice a difference.

Upgraded from a Onkyo 6050. Wanted to try a 5.1.4 Atmos setup so needed a 9 channel receiver. It is handling everything well. Sound is crisp and separation is effective, It's basically the same as the Pioneer Elite LX305. Solid investment on a receiver in the upper mid-range. Remote is the same as the lower end Onkyo receiver, but gets the job done, not backlit.

Disappointing Sound, Great 4k@120Hz Passthrough

This receiver is good for video, but doesn't deserve the hype it's received. I bought this on my 4k 120Hz Home Theater update and am pretty disappointed. My setup is now: LG C2 77, NR7100 in 5.1.2 configuration, Paradigm front speakers, Yamaha center and surround speakers (until I find some I like more), and Onkyo front Atmos speakers (all with 12 guage wire), PS5, XSX, Switch OLED, VR & Home Theater PC with RTX 2070 (to be updated to 30/40 series later this year). Cables are all certified HDMI 2.1 cables from Cable Matters and Infinite Cables - all support full features and tested at 48Gbps bandwidth.
The good: Excellent video passthrough and build quality, clean design, great GUI, lots of inputs and dual outputs. I also appreciate the front input as I like to hook up other things at random and this way I don't need to get behind the receiver for a simple/short-term add-on.
The bad: (1) I had trouble with getting all the features of my Xbox Series X and PS5 out of the box. By default, all inputs and outputs are set to "4k enhanced" and this limits available features. In order to use VRR/ALM/4k@120Hz you need to adjust the inputs you're using AND the output to the TV to "8k enhanced." (2) You can dim the front display, but you can't turn it off completely or have it turn off after a set timeout period. This kind of ruins the immersion when watching dark movies in a dark room. (3) I would have appreciated a cleaner front design and a cover for front I/O). (4) THE FAN is ALWAYS going. It's loud. It's scratchy. It's ANNOYING and I can hear it whenever the receiver is off - my WFH setup is 15ft away from my HT setup and I can hear it all the time while working at my desk. They used a crappy PC-style fan. IF I keep this, I will swap the fan with a silent Noctua fan instead.
The ugly: Here's my one major gripe and it's a doozy. Sound is hollow and low. I'm coming from a MUCH lower powered receiver, the Marantz NR-696, and somehow this is not only QUIETER (lower at the same levels and much lower maximum volume), but the sound is lacking/hollow. I'll be re-evaluating after making some config changes, but, as much as this receiver cost, I'm really disappointed and will likely be returning it.
Final Thoughts: There should have been more though put into the pre-configured settings of this receiver. Having to modify the input and output bandwidth was a big headache and caused me a lot of frustration.
