Fantastic Future-Proof AVR

For some background, I was looking to replace an older (15+ years) Pioneer Elite SC-05, which was a fantastic AVR that allowed me to utilize HD audio from Blu-rays. It's held up well and was giving me no issues, but I wanted to unlock 4K capabilities (including Atmos) that it was lacking.
Given my positive experience with Pioneer, I was drawn to them, Onkyo, and Integra, since they're all under the same ownership umbrella. I watched and read a slew of reviews, and the Onkyo RZ-50 was still being regarded as one of the best AVR's a few years after release, so I decided to pull the trigger once it went on sale for Black Friday.
It...is...fantastic! Very easy to setup and comes with not one but TWO room programs - I used the standard Onkyo as opposed to the acclaimed Dirac as I only have the puck mic, but I'm quite happy with the sound. I'm running a 3.1.2 for now with a set of Focal towers/center and an older Klipsch sub, and there have been no issues whatsoever. I would say it's very neutral sounding, so if you want something warmer you might not like it. Bass is a little on the thinner side, but that could be due to my speakers and not the Onkyo. I do find it very true to the source material, though. Plenty of HDMI inputs, latest spec, 8K support, gaming features...it has all of the bells and whistles you need.
One gripe - and it's very minor - is that the audio format doesn't display on the front of the AVR while in use. It only shows the source as well as the volume - I'd prefer to see Atmos, True HD, Dolby Digital, etc.
Definitely recommended!

This is a dynamic system! It gives me the capability of still enjoying my analog components without having to buy a separate phono preamp. It features al the latest features you would want in a high end system. Power is plenty at 120 watts per channel. It is efficient in delivering that power while being clean in its sound. There are higher priced receivers out there that don't deliver the features that the Onkyo does. A sound investmnt for a for an audiophile.

I've owned this for about 2 months now. Using it with a 3.1 system consisting of in wall 5.5 deftechs for fronts and center and SVS1000 Pro sub. TV is a LG G3. It sounds great with lots of ways to configure. Functionally it's a bit clunky though. Input switching can be very slow, I couldn't get dirac to work for a month (which I was told was becuase their servers were down) and when I did get it to work I didin't like the result. This may be because I'm only running 3.1 or my speakers or something else but I ultimately abandoned it. I also found that it would often take a while (hours) for it to recognize a new input (i.e. cable box or game console) after plugging in with HDMI. Lastly the onscreen menus to configure the unit would come and go. Sometimes it would work and sometimes I would get a "please wait' message and I would have to unplugged/replug in the unit to fix the issue. It was always fixable but kind of annoying as it isn't very practible to use configure via the on unit display.

I have been considering this A/V receiver since it came out a few years ago. Supply was very limited initially and so I chose the Pioneer VSX-LX505 which has similar, but not identical specifications. The Pioneer is a great receiver but has some limitations which the Onkyo improves upon.
So when availability improved and some big sales were going on I jumped at the chance for the Onkyo TX-RZ50. I was impressed with the sound and power, particularly once I used the DIRAC system to adjust the sound. Of note were the different crossover settings available on the Onkyo but not the Pioneer. You can't go wrong with either but my preference is the Onkyo. I should also mention that there were some glitches in the Pioneer which required replacement, however that was easy with Best Buy. I would not have been so pleased if I had to pay return shipping if I bought it from another vendor.

Excellent product, easy to set up and configured, noticed a big difference in sound from our Yamaha model we replaced. Sound is very crisp and clear. We purchased for addition of height speakers, configuration of 7.2.2, sounded so good that we have no need to go to the movies my spouse stated.Excellent price for all the options you get with this receiver compared to other models.

Picked this up on sales at Best Buy for $300 off. Shipped directly to me. I was a little disappointed in the shipping. Best Buy used UPS and UPS said they tried to deliver it which was not true. Long story short, I got it a few days late. The receiver itself is massive. This will be my 3rd Onkyo receiver in the last 18 years. I upgraded to this one for the addition of ATMOS height speakers. Setup is easy. The inclusion of Dirac is definitely a plus. Although I never had an issue with Onkyo's proprietary system, Dirac is better. The only deficiencies I see in this receiver are the remote, which is small and cheap and the fact that it doesn't have 2 separate channel subwoofer outs. My first Onkyo receiver had a nice remote that did everything and lit up. This seems to be the trend among all receiver makers now. There are dual Subwoofer outs, but they are exactly the same signal instead of being left and right channels like on some other high end receivers. Not a deal breaker but it still would have been nice. Other than that, for the money, this is a great, feature packed receiver.

Outstanding product! Paired with Klipsch RP8000f, 504C, 600m, & 500sa. By far the best my home theater has ever sounded. Dirac Live Room Correction is a bit tricky at first, but with proper guides and being paired with a UMIK mic on PC will bring out the best in the room and speakers. The difference after a calibration vs having Dirac off is seriously night and day and I will never own another AVR without it. It's just that good.

This is an excellent A/V receiver. We are using it in 7.1.4 mode with an external Amp to drive the two extra speakers. Sounds and works perfect! Very versatile and highly recommended value for the price.

I replaced a 20 year old Yamaha receiver with this and WOW. Night and day difference. I got it on sale for 1000 dollars and for that price you WILL NOT FIND A BETTER DEAL. This is a 7.2.4 surround system when adding external amps. Do yourself a favor and go get one.

I bought this TX-RZ50 to replace a TX-NR696 which stopped working properly. My TX-RZ50 was an “open box” purchase and I got at a good price. It’s far better than the 696 was in many areas. But, there is something to watch out for. Depending on your TV and receiver combination, the eARC function could be very temperamental. I couldn’t get mine to work properly. I understand that’s a common problem between some receivers and TVs regardless of brand. I ended up using an external streamer which solved my problem. The audio quality and ease of use is very good. Also, if you lose the remote, most functions can be done at the receiver.

I bought this receiver to replace several other receivers that fell short of what I expected.First i started with the sony An1000 which turned out to be a lifeless piece of junk. Then moved on to the sony es 5000 and that was pretty much the same story except it cost me double the price for garbage sound so I started doin research on what receivers were getting rave reviews and the onkyo rz50 was across the board getting praised by most sites so took the leap and boy am i glad i did! This reciever performs and sounds like its a 3 to 4 thousand dollar reciever it has everything you could want and the sound is 2nd to none. The only thing i can gripe about with this onkyo is that it doesn’t have dual independent subwoofer inputs it has 2 sub inputs but it acts as one so you cant adjust 2 subs independently you would need to buy the rz70 for that feature but i can tell you this was night and day difference and i wouldn’t hesitate to buy this receiver if your looking for high quality audio for music and movies!

Well, I've been owning this receiver now for about approximately 3 weeks. I have not hooked it up to its full potential yet, right now. I'm just running the two left and right front speakers, the center speaker and the 2 atmos speakers. It sounds pretty good, but I still have at least 8 more speakers to connect to get the true sound that I'm looking for so I may need a pre. Amp, to connect once I install everything. But for right now, the sound is amazing that it gives

I exchanged another Onkyo unit to the TX-R60 9.2 NETWORK A/V RECEVER. Has several setup variables, and one needs spend time with both the directions and playing with the unit. It is challenging to set up blue tooth with Alexia app and Sony TV. I have enjoyed listening through my Infinity Overture II bi-amped speakers.

Longtime Onkyo user, had a TX-NR609 years ago that developed an issue where sound would drop out from channels. Onkyo let me send it back and exchange it for a TX-NR646. I’ve been using that for about 6 years with no issues. Bought this to upgrade to allow for better 4k features as well as to future proof for a long time. Basic setup was a breeze. Have not used DIRAC yet. Without changing anything else in my setup, sound quality noticeably improved. I have a 7 channel setup with Polk S60 towers, S15 surrounds, and an Emotiva C2+ center. This receiver easily drives all speakers much better than the old one. WiFi connectivity works great. If you’re looking for a high end feature packed receiver for under $2k, this is a great option.

2 extra stars given for potential. The Onkyo TX-RZ50 is incredibly feature rich and a screaming value......if you're lucky enough to have a functioning unit.
I finally built my 5.1.4 home theater system and my installer set everything up properly. I immediately noticed the GUI for the receiver flickers on my screen and experienced HDMI dropouts (LG G2 tv) but those seemed to settle once I launched a movie or show. Worse yet, while the test tones play from all 9 speakers and sub, the RZ50 simply will not output Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. I cannot get Atmos tracks to play with my Apple TV 4K or my Panasonic 820K (which is properly set to output Bitstream audio) and have to use the Dolby Digital tracks to get any audio. My installer couldn't figure it out, nor could anyone else I know with home theater experience. Thankfully (or so I thought), I had purchased Geek Squad protection for the Onkyo so I dropped it off at my local Best Buy for repair and was told it had to be shipped to a service center. I immediately got a notification that the device had been shipped to the local service center (which is less than 60 miles from where I live). It has now been 10 days that I am without my receiver and have received exactly zero updates on the status of my repair. I understand receivers are complex and the repair may take some time but having to send away your expensive item without any updates or estimated timeline is frustrating and not very confidence inspiring.
Needless to say, I am very disappointed in my experience with the Onkyo RZ50 and so far less than satisfied with the service I paid for.
I will update my review if I get it back in full working condition, as well as update my experience with Geek Squad.

I was not disappointed. All specs were excellent. The user interface was a great improvement over the Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha receivers I have used recently. Tip: when moving from 2 to 4 height speakers the connection of back surround will change. The sound quality left nothing else to be desired, excellent. The preamp outs for all channels added flexibility for experimenting with external homemade speakers, equalizers and analog amps. Loved the DIRAC calibration which used the computing power of a cellphone. I will mention one other unique issue I had. I was using 2 passive subwoofers with my choice of full range stereo amps. I needed to add external equalizer as during some music environments I could hear noise (digital?). A regular powered subwoofer would not have this issue, low pass filter and bass boost is built in.

Mixed Experience with the AV

I purchased the AV on 09/22 and have mixed feelings about it. On the positive side, the sound quality is great, and the UI is easy to navigate and understand. Setting it up was a breeze as well. However, there are some frustrating issues that I have encountered.
Firstly, the Dirac feature can be complicated if you're not familiar with it. It took some time to figure out how to properly utilize it. Additionally, while the AV boasts a lot of inputs, I've experienced frequent disconnections, with the units disconnecting about half of the time. Changing inputs also seems to be a hassle, as the system tends to revert back to the previous input instead of staying on the selected input.
Furthermore, I've experienced unexpected occurrences where the sound and image suddenly cut out without any apparent reason. But the most frustrating issue is that the system randomly shuts off, which is highly inconvenient and disruptive to my listening experience.
Overall, while the AV has some strong points such as great sound and an easy-to-use UI, the frequent disconnections, input switching problems, sudden sound and image issues, and random system shut-offs have been significant downsides. It has been disappointing to encounter these issues with a product that I had high expectations for. I hope the manufacturer can address these problems in future updates to improve the overall performance and reliability of the AV.

Plenty of power and most of the current extras you would need. The GUI is a little outdated and don't love the fact that you can't externally amplify just the front 3 channels in a larger setup. Great for the price, but only Good AVR most 5.1.2 setups though.
