I've always been intrigued by the idea of network-connected smart lights. A year or so ago I tried out Belkin's WEMO system with a starter pack of two bulbs and a bridge. Unfortunately I ended up returning them after a few days because I had so many issues with them. They would lose connection with each other frequently, I would need to repair the devices with my network, and one bulb eventually refused to turn on at all. Perhaps I just received a rare defective product. Regardless, I was hesitant to try Smart Lights again.
Of course, I've read lots of great reviews and feedback on the Philips Hue system, so when the light strip starter kit was on sale I figured I'd try them out.
I could not believe how hassle-free setup was! Literally all I had to do was plug everything in and press a button. The system connected to the Hue app on my Android phone right away, and within minutes I was tinkering with different color schemes.
Speaking of apps, the official Philips app leaves a little to be desired. Thankfully, Philips has left the system open for programmers to tinker with, and there are a number of great free and paid apps available to give you greater control. The online service If This Then That (IFTT) adds a lot of great functions to Hue as well. For example, there's a setting on IFTT that will change the color of the lights to match the cover of the album you're listening to.
Adding new bulbs to the system has been a breeze. It's just been a matter of hooking the bulb up to a lamp, turning it on, and pressing a button on the bridge.
If you have Amazon Echo, you can turn the lights on and off by voice. You can even rename the lights (for example, Desktop Lamp instead of Light 1) and Echo will recognize it.
These light strips work great as accent lights. You won't be lighting your whole room with them, but they look great under countertops or along baseboards! The strips are lined with one long piece of tape so they will stick where you want them to.
A word of warning: the Hue system is a rabbit hole. Once you get one light, you'll want to fill your home with them! This can get rather expensive!

Purchased this for under cabinet lighting, provides really cool ambiance! App is great, can set the lights to come on and off at certain times (as well as whatever color or brightness you want). Super easy to setup and install, now i'm looking for more places to apply in my house.

I would recommend these light for kitchen cabinets or under. Easy to use app. Only had them for a week so can't comment on life of lights. Just wish I had order the newer ones with Siri voice commands. All in all the lights are bright and pretty.

I love Philips Hue in general but these light strips are definitely the coolest. There are so many things you can do with them! I currently have one strip behind my tv and one strip above a pair of windows.

I didn't read enough about these before buying. While I am happy with my purchase, I wish they could do standard colors like daylight or soft white. You can get close but they don't automatically switch like the standard or PAR 30 bulbs.
They work great as under cabinets lights. I just ran the cord down the side of our cabinet mounted microwave and ran the lights under each cabinet section (left and right.) Luckily for me, the 6 foot length was perfect for each side.
The real killer app came with the purchase of the Amazon Echo. Using Siri was painful but the Echo communicates with all my home automation including Smartthings. One voice command the the lights are one. Doesn't matter which system they belong to.

I like these lights but even on sale they are a bit pricey. It does include it;s own "router" with two strings of lights. There's a total of 3 plugins too, I wasn't expecting that. The other thing is the lights are either all on or all off, and one color. You can't make them "race" or have multiple colors at one time, like red at one end fading to green on the other. Despite these limitations, I like the lights.
One cool thing there is an "ambient" mode where the lights change color according to what is on the computer screen. So if you're watching a movie and they are under water and it's mostly blue, your lights are blue. If they cut to a scene that is mostly red, your lights turn red-ish.

Better colors than the hue. I got them to place under the kick panel of kitchen base cabinets and they work pretty well there giving the kitchen a nice light. I already had light strips under the upper cabinets which provided a dimming warm white lighting on the counters before I started some home automation but this is even better. Though a little pricey.

The Phillips Hue system is one of my favorite things I own. Being able to change the color of the lights is very therapeutic and can also be used for other purposes. By combining the lights with your free IFTTT.com account (IFTTT stands for "If This Then That" and are conditions to toggle the lights.) I have my lights set to blink on and off rapidly for one minute when the weather outside changes to Rain or weather alerts issued by weather.com. I also use the Hue Disco app found on the Google Play Store also free and make the lights dance to music so I can have an incredible party and bring the club atmosphere to the home without all the unwanted people. I have owned the system for over 2 years now and have to say while it is certainly expensive it IS an INVESTMENT. The lights will last over 10 years and are LED so they only use a fraction of what your CFL bulbs do. My power bill has gone down significantly since i switched most lights to hues. At this point My house is mostly hues. I pounce when I see a sale. I bought 2 LED's and a Bridge for $99.99 here on best buy .com that is an incredible price especially if you dont need the bridge. A great gift for family. Also if the $59,99 price tag doesn't appeal to you they have white only bulbs that retail for $14.99 each if you just want wifi controlled LED bulbs. Incredible product.

This is a great starter kit to get your smart home lighting going as you can easily add more lighting to it. At this price point I would expect more lumens

This bundle includes the old model of hub and light strips. The light strips are dimmer than the new ones phillips came out with but were perfect for what I had in mind. The product was relatively easy to setup. The only negative thing I would say about it is that the app leaves a little to be desired and seemed rather gimmicky.

This starter kit has all that I needed ot start off with backlighting my 65" TV. Problem is I required two light strips in the starter kit itself to completely light up the back of the TV but I'll account that to the TV size and not the strips. BEWARE though, the pricing is NOT appealing enough for everyone to say "wow I want to try this" so read up and inform yourself before you commit. This lighting system IS a unique and interesting one. With plenty of way s to customize and entertain a crowd at your place on a social night. Deffientely a conversatoion starter and for amusement. Going for the Hue light bulbs next! Minus 2 stars just because the price doesnt really fit the product since you have to buy apps on your phone/ipad to have different ways to operate and amuse.

The Phillips Hue system is a fun way to have controllable lighting, with both brightness and color of each bulb (or light strip) individually controllable from your smart phone. The phone apps (and there are many) all do about the same thing. I haven't figured out how to get the lights to pulse with music, but I'm told it is possible. The system is quite expensive and there is very little discounting to be found. Note that you need only one starter kit (there are a few varieties) for up to 50 lights.

I had been looking at the Hue for sometime but considered it a little expensive as what is really a gimmick. Purchased this as a 'Deal of the Day' so got a great price. As this is the starter kit with the hub it was the right purchase to start my Hue family.
Really like the fact that all different lights can be controlled from the app either individually or as a group. Great for parties to set the mood.
I really like this product and will be purchasing more to add to the effect.

I have purchased several "network/wifi controlled" lights. This is super easy to setup just plug control unit into router and plug the light strips into any plug in the house. Download the Hue app and away you go! I wish the strips were a longer but these do the trick for most install needs. Good quality, excellent packaging/out of the box experience.

I purchased these lights a few weeks ago. The setup was easy. I physically hooked up the hub to my router and had the lights connected wirelessly to the hub without any drama. I next downloaded the Hue app and was controlling the lights within no time. I love being able to use alarms to auto turn on/off the lights. Excellent purchase.
