It did record to a digital format as advertised. I found it very difficult to navigate and refine my film clips. The tutorials I found were of little help

Great Adapter To Convert VHS tapes to digital

I looked around the internet at all the different types of rca to USB adapters, and ended up at my local Best Buy store. The best part is, after finding out that Pinnacle made this, I was intrigued, since I have used their movie studio software before. Running Windows 8.1, hooked the USB adapter to the computer, the device installed automatically in about 30 or so seconds. Installed Pinnacle Studio software, and ready to go! Since I have used the software before, getting around was a easy. However, for a beginner, it may be a bit complicated at first. It works great, the quality you would expect from any VHS tape, and you can even adjust brightness, contrast, colors, etc before capture. If you are looking to digitize your old VHS tapes, you can't go wrong with Dazzle!

Overall works well connected to my VCR and my computer. I read some of the negative reviews that complained about freezing. The unit did have some strange behavior when I connected it to the front USB port on my computer. When it switched it to one of the rear ports, the problems went away. This device is powered by the USB port, so it can have issues if there are too many USB devices connected or if it is on a hub with other I/O devices. For those having problems, try to get a high power USB hub and plug that into your computer and try that. Make sure you don't have other programs running either, especially if your computer is more than a couple years old. The only complaint I have is that there were no cables included, that would be a nice perk, as trying to find an S-Video cable nowadays is tough.

I bought this after a really frustrating Groupon experience with another VHS converter package. I bought one, and didn't use it for a while - when I finally got around to setting it up, the hardware piece didn't work, and the company told me it was out of warranty. In a fit of rage, I impulse bought this.
Well, this product subdued my rage, because it actually worked! Fairly simple setup process, as I recall, and I've converted a lot of VHS tapes in a fairly short time. At times, I do wish there was an actual HD option (this only uses the composite cables, or an S-cable,) so that I could do the same for my DVDs and not lose quality, but it's not a deal breaker. As it is, I have converted a couple of DVDs over composite. There is noticeably less quality than if I were watching it on my TV via HDMI - but, I can still see what is happening, and I'm not that picky about it
The software isn't very intuitive, but it's easy enough. Once you start the recording, you can just let it run its course until you have to stop it, which is nice.
If this were to be stolen, I would probably look for one with an HDMI option, but since I have this, I'm not going to go buy something else just for one extra feature.

With the Dazzle I took all my VHS home videos from when the kids were young and recorded them all onto an external hard drive. I have made copies onto multiple hard drives and gave it to them for their birthdays...they loved it and my wife as well of course!

This is the worst piece of garbage I've ever seen

The manual and online tutorial do not even apply to the product. The design in the manual is HUGELY different from the software I received. I couldn't even infer how to do things from it. Customer Service was terrible--the guy told me there is no manual for this software, so I had to email him all my questions. The only answers he provided was to say that this software couldn't do two of the things listed in the manual. He never seemed to understand any of my other basic questions. Not sure if it was a language barrier or if he just didn't want to bother. So I had to try to figure it out myself, which was hard because it didn't work very well. It would only export about 20% of the time--all the other times it crapped out at the very end. And it doesn't work to import from a (non-copyrighted) VHS tape at all. I will have to go buy something else. I've probably wasted 50+ hours with this junk and I'm surprised I didn't have a heart attack from the frustration. DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU VALUE YOUR MONEY, TIME, OR SANITY!!!

Use Windows 7! Not compatible with Windows 8.1

If you are using Windows 8.1 the Pinnacle/Dazzle will not read your device depending on what you are using (I am using a Sony DVD-r camcorder). I had to resort to Windows 7 which now works flawlessly.

I bought a new laptop and a new VCR so that I could capture many VHS tapes of family and events. I tried for two weeks to get the software to work. I spent hours working with customer support to no avail. Then while studying the problem I found the issue. Newer computers have 3.0 USB ports and controllers. The "Dazzle" software is built around 2.0 USB. Here is a quote from the Dazzle customer support that I received on December 11, 2016: We apologize for the confusion and technically you're right our dazzle device is on usb 2.0 and much slower than the usb port that you have. Probably it is the main cause of this capture problem and currently we do not have available patch for it. We will be advising it to our engineering team and hopefully in the future it will be available. Have a great day!

I have tried several VHS to DVD recorders, and always had issues with the audio. Out of three other similar products, Dazzle is the only one I would recommend. The conversion from VHS to DVD is very easy; however the software it come with is horrible. Pinnacle Studio is a pain as it crashes frequently.

Worst Customer Service EVER, Freezes Half the Time

This is the best product with the WORST customer support you will ever buy. The product works great (when it's not freezing) but you will probably only be able to use it with blind trial & error because the documentation SUCKS. This company has had years to develop a good user manual but they just can't be bothered. And if you want lazy, stupid & rude service, that's what you'll get. I don't dare recommend this product (much as I love it when it works) to any of my friends for fear they will hate me. I have seen MANY complaints about the same problems for YEARS but Pinnacle just doesn't give a hoot. And the recent version is even harder to use than the older one, so they are actually getting worse.

Hardware & Software did not communicate

I was trying to convert old 8mm camcorder tapes. I had previously purchased a K-World VS‑USB2800D but was having issues with it. The K-World device works with Cyberlink PowerDirector, which also seemed to have issues. I purchased this hoping that the proprietary software and hardware would eliminate any issues between hardware and software. To my surprise though, the hardware and the software would not communicate with one another. After troubleshooting for a couple of hours and trying everything that could be tried, the software did see the device, but it didn't detect the video being played. It completely failed to do the one thing I bought it to do, so I took it back and got a "Ion Audio - Video 2 PC Digital Video Converter" for half the cost. About 10 years ago I purchased a different Pinnacle product and also returned it, because it didn't work. There are cheaper options that actually work.

Software did not work properly when first installed. Re-installed twice,to no avail. Tried to contact customer service, used their on-line chat, which then gets referred to tech support. Unfortunately tech support is just by email. After two days of their canned response "Your request (xxxxxx) has been updated. They did not offer any suggestions other than reinstalling the software which I did twice before I contacted them. Worthless support. Returned to store.
