It works for what I wanted a receiver for. I don't want or need the radio, wi-fi, internet features, and other perceived value add ons packed into this thing. The sound is good 5.1, and so far the hdmi ports all seem to work. I have already had to reset the unit because it seems to want to change the picture quality. (see page 64 in the online only manual ). It may be because of the way the remote is set up. I don't like the way information is shown on the unit's display but that may just be my personal feelings. I never know what sound stream is being output or input by checking the display. The problem may be because I haven't read and understood the whole manual. I have tried but the laptop I have the manual on only has a battery life of 2.5 hours. I really don't know if I would recommend this unit to a friend. All I want to use it for is to watch TV with 5.1 surround, and it will do that. The sound is OK and it has enough power for my Klipsch speakers in the space my equipment is used. I replaced a new Denon receiver with this one so I guess that says something. The Denon had HDMI problems out of the box and after not getting the unit to work at all after 10 days online and on the phone I returned it and got this. If it keeps working and quits trying to mess with the picture I will be happy .

Very happy with my purchase and the rep who helped me. Overall, the unit is a little larger than I would have liked and the basic instructions could have been more complete (I didn't want to go online for more info while hooking it up), but overall, a good value for the money and it does what I needed it to!

Bought this to replace my 15 year old receiver. There is a newer version of this unit so the price was marked down considerably. The newer version is wirless. This unit requires a wired wi-fi connection. It is driving some large Phase Technology speakers and doing it quite well. Hook up was easy, but I had some difficulty in getting the sub woofers to work. I could not get my Directv controller to work with the receiver. I must use two buttons.

I was very impressed when this receiver arrived. It was an open box item purchased from the marketplace. I honestly think the box had been opened for some reason but it seemed pretty likely the product had never been unwrapped from any secondary packaging or peel and sticks. This is an awesome receiver. I wanted an internet/network receiver for my bedroom. It rivals the one in my living room which was more than twice the cost. Super simple to set up, great to the ear. What a steal!

I would give this device 5 stars, but it actually lost the ability to accept a hdmi signal in on the 30th day of ownership. The HDMI in was the main reason why I purchased this device. I was able to return the item due to the extra return period and got another. I also purchased geek squad warrenty just in case. Overall though when it works it sounds awesome and has tons of features including apple air ability.

I have owned many receivers. This is my first with integrated AirPlay and spotify. This is being used in the best of environments so most people's experience will be worse. Gigabit Ethernet to receiver Multiple 2x2 wireless routers to clients Setup to vizio 65" M 1. Runs cool 2. AirPlay works. It comes out standby. But!!!! After AirPlay is done does not return to original input!!! Arg. So if you have the TV on hdmi 1, AirPlay a quick photo, turn off your phone, you have a black screen until you get up, find remote, switch to hdmi 1 (and no the CEC is just busted too) 3. As a network target, even on Ethernet, it gets lost a few times per month. Need to power cycle. Annoying 4. Did I mention hdmi-CEC is spotty at best? You have a single choose : all feature or none. Most allow you to specify input sync vs volume etc. 5. AirPlay adm dlna on screen display is horrible. 640x480 8but color So at $200 for an open box this is great. Spotify connect works great. I use AirPlay through my HTPC (KOdi/XBMC) avoiding the hardware problems If this review sounds like a jumbled word salad then for sure this is not for you: not user friendly and need to really understand this stuff to get it to work sometimes. If I was spending retail would definitely stuck to Yamaha onkyo or Sony: all three at least don't stick on AirPlay Seriously what engineer thought that was a good idea: who wants to find their receiver remote to go back to using their TV

The sound from this receiver is awesome, crystal clear highs and deep bass. only thing not working right, is the 3D signal passing through the receiver to my Samsung 3D TV, the screen flickers on and off. I had to connect my 3D BlueRay directly to the TV and use Optical cable for sound to the receiver.

I purchased this to set up a home theater system in my home which already had speakers installed. Installation was easy and the auto calibration to balance the system is a nice feature. Note this is a 5.2 unit . I installed it ran the auto calibration and sat down to watch a blu ray movie. I am very happy with the perfomance. I have also tuned and listened to several FM radio stations and am very happy with the sound.

Bought this after my old receiver went on the blink. Looked at a number of other receivers - for the features included - couldn't beat the Pioneer. Have had approx 2 months now - has been great purchase - I run everything through this puppy: DVD, Roku, Amazon Fire, Xbox One, PS3, - sound is great and very easy to use. I also love that there is no audio delay when outputting to Samsung HDTV

I shopped long and hard and looked at a lot of mid priced AV receivers when my old Insignia failed. This VSX-824 was the best bang for the buck. This unit has performed flawlessly, works great with my projector and the control apps on my Apple and Android pads & phones make it a a delight to use. I keep the iPad handy when playing Call of Duty and the app lets me easily adjust the volume during late night gunfights. I think the Netradio function alone is worth what I paid, and the Pandora integration is outstanding - it's great to listen to digital music without running the PS3 or having to fire up any external device - very 21st century. I read a reviewer somewhere disparaging the 1 year warranty but I have a buddy who has a 2011 Pioneer AV receiver of the same VSX series that has run almost continually since he bought it new, and his still works great. I work in electronics and I can tell you that any AV product can have problems, but they usually show up right away. Repair or replacement will almost always be warranty, so the 1 year seems fair to me given the unit's capabilities and price point. The highest praise I can render is - that for me, after a long day, this advanced receiver is a just reward for too many hours at work, and I always find a few minutes to kick on some jazz and relax and listen to the Pioneer before bed each night.

The receiver was easy to set up for standard use, and it sounds great. It's lacking good instructions in the operations manual, though, for the more sophisticated features, so you kind of have to figure them out on your own if you want to use them.

this is an excellent receiver for the price. It is loaded with features, and will work with future equipment upgrades such as 4k televisions.this unit is fairly complex to set up,and the setup menu is onscreen,so you have to be connected to tv with an hdmi cable to be able to set the unit up,but the on screen menu is pretty straight forward.the automatic surround speaker set-up does not give you good sound, but it is very simple to set up your speakers manually from the remote.it is bluetooth capable, but you must have an additional adapter, which is pretty expensive(100.00) any I have not been able to find one anywhere yet.(out of stock.)overall a great receiver.

I use this to run the surround sound in my movie room. Pretty good sound quality. I find that I have to have the sound volume up towards the high end in order to get movie level volume. Not sure if it is this unit or my speakers. It has a lot of sound settings to allow you to configure to your environment. One complaint is that it indicates that it supports DLNA, but it only does for audio. I was hoping I could use it to stream my videos, but it doesn't support that DLNA feature.

This is definitely a decent system. It will deliver the power you want where you need it. However it's on the older side. So other than Bluetooth it won't integrate with other smart tech.

Overall I am extremely pleased with this receiver and will continue to try to get my subwoofer to work with it. It's an older sub (10+ year old Klipsch unit) so it's possible that it simply died at the same time that I switched from my old Sony STR-ES receiver to this one. the huge plusses so far are the HDMI switching, which was my primary reason for buying this. The functionality works perfectly. I really like the sound quality to my other speakers, much crisper sound and the center channel especially is a night and day difference. This was a "deal of the day" and the price was very low.

I bought this receiver when it was on sale for $250 and I have only had it for about a month now. I have no complains, but the set up was a lot different then what I was used to when we used RCA wires to hook everything up. Once I got everything to work using the HDMI cables I love it! The auto speaker set up is great! You still have to tweak the speaker setting for your liking but the receiver does a great job getting it close! Music, movies, games and everything else is so clear and crisp sounding! I do wish I had blue-tooth, but I just bought a blue-tooth music receiver and that work perfectly fine for me....

I bought this unit as an open box / no missing accessories deal. It was a display unit. The price was great. This was a display unit and the sales tag read that there were no missing accessories. So I based my decision to purchase this unit on that information. The only thing missing was the original box and the packing materials. I bought the unit, got the accessory bag and took everything home. While setting it up, I was reading the owner's manual and discovered that the manual I had was for a lessor model number. I was given the accessory bag for the VSX-524k model and I purchased the more capable VSX-824k model. I took the accessory bag and my receipt back to the store. I made two visits since my first encounter was with a part-time associate and it was recommended I come back to talk to the full time associate who knew the audio department very well. I explained that all I wished to do was to exchange the accessory bag I was given for the correct accessory bag so I could have the correct owners manual and remote control. Both associates looked through the display area, the warehouse and the sales area but no accessory bag could be found with the correct owners manual and remote. I like the unit so I am going to keep it. It saddens me though that when the tag says no accessories are missing, then the correct set of accessories should come with the unit. I got the unit for a great price so no issues there. The sales associates were friendly and as helpful as they could be. No issues at all with the sales associates. I looked around on the internet and Pioneer no longer stocks the original replacement remote even though it is a 2014 model. Another website sells the original brand new remote but by the time taxes and postage are added, the remote would cost $60-65. The correct remote has additional features on it since it is one model higher than the remote I got with the accessory package. So my advice is that if you purchase an out-of-box item, even though they bring you all the accessories, check what is given to you for it might not be for your specific model. The explanation I got was that they couldn't find the correct bag of accessories and that the store throws away a lot of things for they just don't have enough room to store them. What was funny was that where the display model was, the storage cabinet behind the units on display had plenty of room in it to store all of the display model accessory bags in it. I think it is more of a problem of organizing what they have versus throwing things away because they do not have enough room. Be vigilant, check out the owners manual and remote to make sure you get the correct items when you purchase an out of box item. Otherwise, it is a good unit so far and the price was pretty good. Always great service form the sales associates.
