Customers regard the hub's wide array of ports, compatibility with Apple MacBooks, portability, and user-friendly design as its main advantages. They appreciate the inclusion of an SD card reader and the sleek design. However, some users have concerns about the short cable length, insufficient power supply for certain devices, overheating issues, and the hub's size.

This hub is really good for the price but it gets very warm after use of about an hour.. not sure if that’s normal since I don’t have much experience with these in the past. But I can’t complain it does the job.

Those USB-C ports on the new MacBook Air laptop can be irritating. Especially if you want to plug in a Cat5e Ethernet cable...and a printer, and maybe other devices. This adapter makes that possible. The one thing I don't like is if you elevate your Mac, the heaviest part of this adapter tends to dangle by its cable. Long term - that can't be good. But zero problems so far.

Great adapter, I use the 5k usb-c output for my 144hz 1440p monitor and works at full refresh rate, the ethernet adapter works at full gigabit and no issues with the USB-A outputs. One caveat to note is the usb-c input labelled "Power-in' Charges at 75W, while the "5k video" charges at 95W, so to have the full charging capability you cannot use the 5k monitor output at he same time. But even for my 16" macbook 75W is enough for it to charge normally so it is not an issue for me.

I was deeply frustrated at having to buy and cary a half dozen adapters for my MacBookPro, and this replaced all of them. It is fast, easy to use, sleek, light, and looks just like the computer itself. This is absolutely a solid value for the price.

Easy plug in. Didn’t realize how much I needed the additional ports. Best Buy of 2020. Plus it matches my Mac Pro perfectly.

I recently started getting a "USB Accessories Disabled. Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices" messages and the hub became unusable. I am using a new 16" MacPro running the latest OS. I couldn't find a fix so I was forced to ditch this product. My new HUB works great. Very disappointed with the Platinum product.

This is an amazing product. It works extremely well, is well build and has all the ports one might need.
Product:
The product itself utilized two thunderbolt ports on the side of your Macbook Pro. I tested it with a 2019 Macbook 15” and it attached just fine. The product is not flush with the laptop like some competitors but instead uses a plug with a cable to the actual hub, the cable is not very far so it works well for a desk. On it, you will find 2x USB 3.0 type A plug, USB C x2 (one supports 40 GB/s the other is for power in or a 5GB/s connection), Micro SD, SD Card, ethernet and a HDMI port. When connected the height extends over the edge of the laptop by just a bit so if you like your products to look nice and tidy this might bug you.
Performance:
As mentioned, it connects just fine with my Macbook Pro 15 and requires zero setup. I do a lot of photography, so the inclusion of a Micro SD and SD card slot are great. With this product you get full Thunderbolt 3 speeds. I did not have a Thunderbolt external monitor to test it with (was using HDMI), but it should support pretty much any resolution you can throw at it over USB-C Thunderbolt. The label stats it supports 5k video at 40 Gbps. SD card transfer speeds were in the ballpark of 81 MB/s write and 88 MB/s read on my Sandisk card which supports speed up to 95 MB/s read. For an A1 rated micro SD card, I got 56 MB/s write and 87 MB/s so overall card performance was good.
In short, you should be able to connect all your devices while quickly transferring files back and forth.
The setup I am using includes a 4k HDMI Free sync monitor, USB-C external hard drive for backups, USB-C SSD external hard drive for photo storage, and normally a SD card for my camera. I did not notice a single instance of slowdown and all devices appeared to run at 100% speed.
Last note on performance, there is a label saying to connect type-C power to the device for possible improved functionality, with everything I had connected there was no issue so I assume this might be if you have full speed thunderbolt devices connected.
Cons / concerns:
I ran across one issue but could not replicate it. When removing the device while the laptop is powered on, there was an instance where the laptop shut down the moment it was pulled out and I was able to reboot it. I started getting in the habit or removing it only when the laptop is powered down just to be safe. I was a little concerned it caused a power surge. I cannot say if this was an isolated incident to my unit or across the whole product line. I am only deducting one star as it seems like it might be a rare issue and do the products fit explained earlier
Also, the product is a little hard to remove from the laptop, but it is a minor issue.
Summary:
High quality materials, great style, useful connections, seamless integration. Buy this.

I needed this with my new MacBook Air. Negatives: Apparently you have to connect it to power for it to work; it uses both Thunderbolt ports on the MacBook. I knew it used both ports when I bought it. I did not know it always had to be plugged in. That's not a big deal. It just means one more cable hanging around.
Positive: It allows me to plug in my older external hard drives, etc. That's what I got it for and it works just fine.
I have not tried the SD ports yet.

Great Hub for Macbook

When I get to the office, I was often stuck with having to limit the adapter I would use at my desk. Having minimal USB slots, and needing to use Ethernet, a small USB key, and needing to use external storage is a pain.
This portable hub is a great find. It includes various USB slots, a card reader, and an Ethernet port! WiFi at the office is often slow, but the Cat 6 connection is super quick! I usually had to unplug a device to connect my external drive. This solved all of my needs, and it fits in my bag! It does take up both USB C slots, but it gives them right back. One is labeled for power; which I’m sure is the preferred plug in.
The Ethernet is a huge win, and when I’m not traveling, stays plugged in to the hub. No need for software, or waiting for it to power up. It just works! This is a great buy, and I now use it daily!

---SETUP---
The setup of this hub for Mac is quick. Out of the box, it is plug and play. I was able to plug it in without removing my protective case from my 2019 MacBook Pro.
---FEATURES---
The key feature of this hub is that you can turn your two USB-C ports from the MacBook Pro into 8 ports: 2 USB-Cs, 2 USB 3.0s, SD, Mirco SD, Ethernet port, and a 4K HDMI port. Additionally, it is self powered and doesn’t require to be plugged in anywhere other than your MacBook.
---PERFORMANCE---
The performance was phenomenal. I had purchased a cheaper, similar device online but when I plugged in my external USB Apple disc drive, it wouldn’t power up. With this Platinum hub, I was able to plug in the USB Apple disc drive and it worked flawlessly. I was also able to connect a tablet and my own Mac charging cable so that both devices were charging at the same time. It had no issues reading my 3.0 USBs nor my Mirco SD cards with and without the SD adapter. It is able to read up to 2 TB SD cards.
---EXPECTATIONS---
The product exceeds my expectations. Not only does the Platinum hub work, but it has a great aesthetic. It is space gray, which matches perfectly with my MacBook while opened. Additionally, when I plugged in my HDMI cable, or any other cable, the cables don’t feel loose. There’s a nice tight feeling when you plug anything to it, which makes the Platinum hub feel like what it is, a quality product.
---VALUE---
The price for the Platinum Hub in terms of value is worth the investment. After purchasing a different brand online to save money, I quickly realized that not all products are built to the same standard. Platinum has now become a brand name that I trust.
---APPROVAL---
I highly recommend this product for people who own MacBook Pros with dual USB-C hubs that need different types of ports. As a presenter and educator, I am really loving the ability to connect to legacy products that were made before USB-Cs and the Platinum Hub is a great addition to my MacBook everywhere I go now.

A few months ago, I purchased a new MacBook Air, which had a USB-C instead of a standard USB plug. I saw this, but I thought the $80 price tag a bit much. So, I bought a couple other cheaper adapters. However, while useful, they didn't have all the features I desired, so I eventually decided to go ahead and buy it. It has two standard USB slots, which enable me to use my Blu-Ray player burner (which requires two USB plugs). It also includes a slot for an SD card reader, in addition to a Micro SD card reader, which is useful as my new laptop lacks an SD card reader like my old one. It also has an ethernet port, should you wish to use that to connect to the Internet instead of Wi-Fi. Also has two USB-C slots, so I can use one for the power plug, and have one left for a USB-C device, or plug in my other adapter to it.

This hub is a necessary peripheral for MacBook since Apple dropped USB and thunderbolt ports in favor of USB-C only. Solid and light weight hub provides 8 ports 2 USB-C one for high-resolution video, 2 USB 3.0, SD slot, Mirco SD slot, ethernet port, and 1 HDMI port for 4K video resolution. Very useful to expand my MacBook Pro functionality in terms of being flexible to use multiple ports.

So far, the unit has performed well. It does get a little hot. I use all ports. My Transcend card fits the SD slot, which was a bonus. The HDMI hums along and the USB-C to lightning charges all my Apple devices (mobile and pod case). I am happy with everything, but the cable length from the module. I prop my MacBook up over a fan tray and the height is too high for the USB-C dual connector, so it dangles of the connection, which isn't good long term. I have since propped up the hub on a pencil eraser, to keep it more level with the connection point to the laptop.

Good looking Hub for practical need

It comes with handy number of connections that satisfy sd/micro card ports, 2 usb c, 2 usb 3.0, 1 hdmi and eternity port. Its design seems to be thought for use case that user's mobility and need to have single action of plug into MacBook while the hub is connected to network and left on the desk with all other connectivity already in place.
Physically, it is light, but bit bulky for my view. Color match perfectly with space gray MacBook, maybe very slight differences in the tone, but not noticeable at simple sight. Its cable that comes attached to plug into MacBook is not detachable, hence its practicality bit awkward I would say; I would have prefer detachable like Apple chargers that allow better mobility and organizing in the backpack, and also could have been additional usb c port. Another aspect in the practicality, due to its intend to allow plug from both side, organizing cables for accessories need some work by the user. The belt material and feels looks sturdy but it is made of plastic.
In bottom line, as it takes two usb c port of MacBook, and still there are same number of usb c in the hub, then what user gain is the allocated ports for generic USB port and sd card/ethernet/hdmi instead of having to have multiple connectors for each kind. For the msrp price point and based on above review, it is average not that is bad at all, but neither superb to fall in love, just enough and do what meant to. Hence the given rating. In the photo, one of it comparing size against iPhone X Plus to give idea of size, then what look like side, and connected.
Despite the rating, it is recommendable for the practical use

Platinum - Dual USB-C-to-8-Port Hub for select Apple MacBook Laptops - Space Gray offers a must-have add-on after Apple removed all inputs on the MacBook Pro, but 2 USB-C ports. This product provides the essential options of USB-A (2), HDMI (1), Ethernet (1), 2 USB-C inputs (2 - one for data transfers, one for power), SD Card (1), and Micro SD Card (1). This is all accomplished via a dual USB-C plug.
I found this product a necessary addition to any MacBook Pro 2017 or newer owner. I also found this product to be exceptionally bulky and awkward to use. Unless you are on a hard surface and plan to use your computer for presentations or a desktop alternative, this product seems in the way and far to big for the sleek MacBook Pro! Outside of this unfortunate aspect, it is still a necessary product.
PROS
- Absolutely needed to provide the missing inputs for the new generation of MacBook Pros.
- Added 8 inputs to the 2 input ports
CONS
- Incredibly bulky compared to the size of the MacBook Pro. The plug extends above and below the edge of the computer making it awkward and a place to catch your fingers on.
- The bulky size is complicated with a stiff cord about 3" long adds to the odd size and spreads out the operation of your MacBook Pro with this product now about 5-8" to the left of your computer.
A necessary product for real users, but just expect the bulkiness to be unsightly and awkward. I believe Platinum really missed on the size of this, while making a needed product.

I purchased this so that I could use the Ethernet at work and on the go. I like the fact that it also has two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, SD card readers and a HDMI port. Pretty much everything you need for being on the go with your MacBook. I do have to day it gets a little warm to the touch. Beyond that it’s a great piece of technology.

This hub rocks. It does everything I need. What else could I ask for? Well, it would be nice if it had an audio-out jack. That would make it PERFECT.
I particularly utilize the power-in port, the USB ports (for an external hard drive, and a lightning cord to my phone or iPad for dual display functions), the ethernet port and the SD card reader.
It's all good. Glad I picked this hub.

This is a great, small form factor extension hub for my Macbook pro 16” (2019 model). The sale price, quality and features were perfect. I ended up buying a second one for my son’s macbook air(2020 model) This hub works as advertised on both machines. I highly recommend.
