I'm knowledgeable of what pokemon are, but never played the games, so i didn't know many of them but a few, but the movie at least makes sure you hear the names of the pokemon you're seeing, even if you never know what element they're part of or abilities they can do. The movie itself does a good job of moving along, Reynolds gives us the humor we expect that gets us through. The main human character is a bit lackluster and takes much getting used to. All in all, i bought it, and I don't mind owning it, probably a must have for definitive pokemon fans as it's a legit movie that's not necessarily ABOUT pokemon. Note: there aren't really too many pokemon fights...probably just the main end battle.

The first live action Pokemon movie could have certainly been a trainwreck, but Detective Pikachu embraces the weirdness of the franchise and runs with it. Plenty of funny and cute moments for the kids, and quite a few jokes for parents, especially if they've grown up with Pokemon themselves. If you're not familiar at all with Pokemon, you may be a little lost, though the film does attempt to fill in newcomers with varying degrees of success. Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith have great chemistry as Detective Pikachu and Tim, as the two search for Tim's father, who is also Pikachu's partner. Thrown into the mix are an intrepid reporter and her Psyduck, a plot to alter the relationship between human and Pokemon, and lots and lots of coffee. You may have figured out the plot before the end of the first act, but the amazing visual effects, strong performances, and some amusing diversions along the way will keep you invested until the end.

I was not familiar with the Pokemon world and think the movie probably works better for those already immersed in that area. The storyline had a couple of twists and turns that I did not anticipate and some that you could see coming from far away, but overall it was an enjoyable and entertaining experience. The storyline (without giving too much away): A teen boy learns that he can understand what Pikachu says while everyone else only hears meaningless noises. Together they try to solve the mystery behind the death of a police detective family member and in the process learn about a plot to destroy the symbiotic relationship between humans and the creatures in the Pokemon world. I bought the 3D version because it was in 3D and probably wouldn't have purchased it otherwise. Having said that, it was a good enough movie that I will watch it again in the future.

I didn’t grow up on Pokémon. So I went into this with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised. Of course it does help there is Ryan Reynold’s charm as pikachu! This 3D Blu-ray Disc is sharp and precise with nice spatial depth throughout. The world is imaginative and the movie is watchable whether you are a long time fan or not. Happy to still support studios that release 3D versions of their movies. 4K is nice but flat. 3D brings a whole different sense of enjoyment to this film. Highly recommend.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu, is a movie for all ages I was born in 66 and i have had all SNES and Gameboys made. I loved playing the Pokemon games and to have a Live Action Pokemon Movie with Ryan Reynolds playing the role of Detective Pikachu was brilliant, he ad libs alot of his lines. The 3D effects made the movie experience at home. My Home Theater, I don't have drive anywhere. BBuy thanks for the 3D movie, which y'all should offer on all movies, filmed in this format. I bought mine from BB, y'all said it would be around forever and all the studios are on board, please hold up to the end of your side. Thanks

I never thought we would get a live action Pokemon film and I believed it was even less of a chance that it would be a good film. As a Pokemon fan, I'm happy to say that I was wrong and we got a fun detective style Pokemon movie. This film is a lot of fun and I enjoyed the mystery aspect of it. You'll appreciate this film more if you like Pokemon, however, I don't feel that it is a requirement. The movie doesn't require you to have hardly any previous knowledge of Pokemon and I feel that anyone can enjoy this film especially families. I would simply say give this film a try and I think you'll enjoy it.

The first live-action adaptation film based on the popular Pokemon series is very faithful to the anime. However while the Pokemon depicted on screen are stunning rendered there is very little dramatic flair when it comes to the battles which is the calling card of the whole series. Detective Pikachu fails to deliver fight scenes that can live up to the ones frequently shown in the anime. While I get that this is more a mystery noir detective theme movie I can't help but feel more could have been done. I was going to give a three star rating but changed it to four because I did love how amazing they made Mewtwo in the movie, one of my all time favorite Pokemon. All that being said I expect the sequel to be better than its predecessor.

I have been a Pokemon fan since my son got me hooked on the game when he was young so I was waiting for a movie of this caliber for a long time. I can't believe that they let Ryan Reynolds star as Picachu considering his, shall we say, more adult language. He certainly is very "colorful" in other movies but was a bit more tame in this one. Great story line and graphics, My son is now 27 years old and it was fun to sit and watch this movie with him 20 years after he introduced me to the Pokemon world.

This movie has to be kept in context when going to view it. If you are looking to just waste 2 hours in a chilled movie theater this weekend and have never played, seen, or consumed any pokemon themed media, this movie might be a mistake. That being said if you are a fan of the material, or at least familiar with it, this is a joy. Funny and thrilling, with real gumshoe, detective devices added in to boot, this was such a fun movie to watch. There are some wholes, and some editing issues that can be glossed over, as well as some areas that lack polish other areas have, as well as some disappointing leave outs, but all and all a fun ride. See it with a crowd.

Based off the detective pikachu games rather than main story or being completely original this movie is fun for all ages. The designs of the pokemon are familiar and colorful in all the right ways while maintaining the essence of the original designs. The story is kind of predictable but still absolutely fun to watch through. Justice smith and ryan reynolds team up with a good on screen presence. Overall as an original pokemon player and current fan still this movie was a fun watch.

The story is ok, the characters are likeable and the Pokemon are comedy gold at times. Whether you like the Pokemon franchise or not, it’s a fun popcorn movie and the kiddos will like it for sure. Some more mature themes so toddlers may not enjoy it as much as the cartoon, but hey, it’s Hollywood’s interpretation of the timeless video game. Ryan Reynolds makes for an entertaining Pikachu that has a much larger vocabulary than the video game and cartoon version. Check it out!

Skipped this when it was in theaters. Glad I waited for the 4k Blu-ray set! Steelbook case design is awesome, 4k BR looked amazing on my tv, you also get a digital copy and a regular BR in the case. Movie itself is funny, good story, and the Pokemon visual effects are amazing! This coming from a 33 year old fyi! Oh and it also includes not 1 but 2 of the Pikachu SM190 promo cards!

I originally saw this movie in the theater and liked it enough to purchase it. I feel this movie did a fantastic job integrating Pokemon into the real world. The effects were amazing--not too cartoony, and just realistic enough to avoid the uncanny valley. The action sequences were well done, and played to the strengths of the Pokemon. Pikachu is a cool character with many good lines of dialogue. There's something here for kids and adults to enjoy.

As much as I like Pokemon, when this movie was announced I was not all that excited. The idea of Pikachu as a detective did nothing for me. After seeing it I was very surprised! The movie was very entertaining and my wife and I had a blast with it. The movie is very predictable but that did not take away from my enjoyment. The steelbook is also very nice! The material really makes all the colors on it pop. Its definitely one of the nicest steelbooks I own.

Very cool cover art that highlights the movie's strength, its production design. The movie itself is cute with some funny moments, and all the Pokemon look amazing. The story is a little weak, but it still manages to be one of the better video game based movies out there. The price is fair for three versions of the movie, but the extras are just okay, nothing overly long or in depth unfortunately. A gallery of all the Pokemon made for the movie would have been fun to see for the ones that aren't visible onscreen for long. If you liked the movie though, this is worth the buy.

Imagine if they made a move about visiting Bill's house in RBY wrote a whole story about it. That's this movie, it's more of light-hearted take of people living alongside pokemon and just got over it like nothing happened, resuming monotonous lives. It lacks most of the elements of the games and feels like it's treading a line not to inundate people outside the fandom with exposition or uninformed in-references. So I can't give it 5 stars even if I wanted to, it clearly didn't try win over either the hardcore or the casual and it fails to be a must-watch because of it.

So my 6 yr old convinced me to rent this movie....depending on the tv brand....the graphics are AMAZING!!!! They looked so real. Vibrant colors...I actually enjoyed the plot and didn’t make an excuse to leave so my son could finish it on his own. Never thought I’d be a fan to watch it more than once...but once I saw it on sale at Best Buy, I had to get it. We’ve watched it at least 3 times in the two weeks!

I love Pokémon since Pokémon Red & Blue on the Gameboy. At first, I wasn’t optimistic for a live-action Pokémon movie. Then, when I watched the movie in the movie theater with my wife, we were very surprise and we had a great time. The film is very well done and captures the magic of what makes Pokémon special. We bought it on Blu Ray, watched it again and we loved it even more. Crossing our fingers for a sequel.

I came into this film intially expecting very little. It's a movie based on a spin-off of a popular video game franchise. I've always been a fan of the series and films released prior to this, but to take on a live-action detective noir style in the pokemon universe is a tall order. Luckily, short of a few moments that are predictable if you're a pokemon fan, it's a fun romp that is great for mutliple viewings.

Detective Pikachu finally breaks the live action video game movie curse (the animated curse was broken by Bayonetta: Bloody Fate) with an adaptation that surpasses the video game source material. Trust me, I played the 3DS game, and I actually prefer the movie. A great ride from start to finish. The Steelbook, meanwhile, is a great design that's definitely a highlight of my collection. Very highly recommended!
