I purchased the basic Roku unit to access YouTube TV as a lower cost replacement for Direct TV. One needs to have access to a WIFI - internet connection, an active email account and a TV with a HDMI interface connection. I had a difficult time setting it up for first time use. It was confusing - not because it was complicated but rather the terminology, moving through the interface menus and operating the remote were not intuitive.
After it is set up (no tools are required) the user can access many preset "channels" at no cost. These Roku "channels" are NOT channels in the channel 2 to 13 and UHF channels sense, but rather streaming services options. The user then needs to subscribe to a streaming service, such as YouTube TV (different from YouTube), netflix, HBO, ESPN, sling, or even Roku streaming TV to watch movies, live TV, news and weather. These services charge monthly fees from $30 to $60 USD. When I signed up "YouTube TV" was the closest subscription to the Direct TV Basic Package and costs less than $50/month.
Once I became used to how the remote worked, my wife and I were very satisfied with the TV viewing options available. I purchased s second remote the ROKU - streaming Stick with Voice Remote with TV Power and Volume control. This remote cost about $20 more for our upstairs TV. For us this remote proved to be the better value because we can turn on/off the TV and the RoKu streaming device with just the voice remote. (There is also the option of adding a free app to our smart phones and they become the Roku-TV remote. I have not tried this but others have and they think it works very well.
The streaming stick is very small and portable. Once set up can be disconnected and taken on trips, and used anywhere there is a broadband internet, a wireless router and a TV with an HDMI port. The only negative thing is the Streaming Stick runs warm and can occasionally over heat, but it will warn you when it starts getting too warm and shuts down. We found that the original installation was to close to the back of the TV and the air vents from the TV were causing the Roku to become warm. A short HDMI cable which can be ordered free from Roku seems to have solved that problem. We have saved over $60 a month from our Direct TV and enjoyed basically the same viewing options as with Direct Baisc plan. I have recommended this product to friends and family and give it 4 stars

Love this. Better than chromecast as i always end up having issues with my chromecast and controlling what i am watching through my phone. TONS of apps, love that it has a remote and now that this new 2017 version has a mic and you can control your tv!!
That was the closer for me, supports all my video streaming apps (youtube, vudu, google movies, amazon prime etc)
The Chromecast is definitely pretty fast when it comes to just tapping a single button. But controlling it from your phone and become a nuisance. 15 dollars more gets you a remote that can control your tv, has a mic that makes searching alot easier. Buy this!

I love the new Roku Streaming Stick. I have used other types of streaming devices in the past but I have found the Roku stick to be the most comprehensive. It is easy to use and does not require the use of another mobile device like a phone or iPad to stream. The Roku comes preloaded with apps and allows you to download others. It is easy to setup and easy to use.

Essentially does what it is designed to do: stream wi-fi channels. It loads/ streams quickly with a good clear picture. I found it easy to set up my pre-existing accounts as well as to find many many other channels to choose from. I didn't give it 5 stars because it doesn't have an off button so a) it is using data all the time, and b) since it is on all the time, it gets very hot! After reading reviews on other sites I have plugged mine into a timer to cut power to it when no one will be watching. I have also requested the free HDMI extender from Roku that with get the stick further from the back of the tv to keep it cooler - an indication that they know heat is a problem so i find it frustrating that it wasn't just included in the packaging.

This Roku Stick is awesome!! I didn't want to shell out more money to the cable company to get another cable box in my house, and in fact I'm strongly considering getting rid of all but one of the cable boxes and going to Roku everywhere.
Nearly every channel my wife and I watch are all accounted for through Roku, and as long as you have a cable subscription bundled with internet, you can view nearly any channel on the device.
In addition there are multiple other streaming options such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Roku itself and Crackle that are all available through this service, unlike dealing with the Chromecast/Prime boycot.
I highly recommend this device!!

Let me begin by saying that we have not had cable for about 10 years, but neither of us missed it. I bought a TV some 6 months ago for my son to watch a few shows on streaming services. This Roku has been a godsend. It's great to be able to have all of the services in one place and with one interface. The Stick form factor is fantastic for us. We move the TV behind the couch after each video (it's only a 24" TV), so hooking up a bunch of stuff each time would be a pain. For our purposes, this has worked exceptionally well.
One last thing - the remote with the ability to power up and down the TV and change the volume has been fabulous. That means we have only needed one remote for everything. That's important, because the Roku Stick remote only works on WiFi. If you need a universal remote, you'll need one that can do WiFi, which isn't cheap. Since we only have the TV with the Stick, this has been perfect, but if that's not your setup, you may want to consider a Roku that works via IR as well. The boxes can do that, from what I understand.

Roku Streaming Stick is acceptably fast to change between Roku Channels. Picture Quality is great. Easy to install and takes zero room on my desk, since it mounts on the back of the TV. I have not used the voice remote option, as I'm like buttons. Power, mute, and volume control works great with my Insignia TV.

I had a 7 year old Roku that was starting to act up and it was time to replace it. The Streaming Stick did everything I needed it to!
Install was a snap, the small size makes it easy to install it behind a wall mounted TV. Only change I would have liked is an HDMI extension cable so the unit is not sticking straight out of the TV. Luckily I had an adapter laying around.
The Roku is fast, no buffering issues. Remote works great, voice search gives results from all of the providers. Haven't found a way to limit it yet to only the app I'm currently in.

The Roku Streaming Stick streams Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and the rest in an ultra-compact design for an affordable price. Its remote can control your TV's volume and power. Responses are lightning-fast. The simple menus put every streaming service on a level playing field and offer more apps and better search than competitors.

This is my third Roku streaming stick (fourth Roku overall--I also have the Roku Premiere Plus). After years and years and years of having the outrageous cable bills and paying for ten thousand channels we never watched, I finally convinced my husband to CUT THE CORD. Enter the Roku streaming stick. If you have a good internet service (read: fast speed internet), all you need is this streaming stick. We cut our cable off and our bill for a really good, fast, high speed internet is literally $100 cheaper without all the baggage of those ten million channels we never watched anyway. We already subscribed to Netflix (and thanks to my love of all things Star Trek, we have a subscription to CBS All Access as well). Between those two subscriptions and all the free (totally free) apps found on Roku to watch various movies and tv, it's all we need. And this is with three kids, a preschooler, an elementary school aged kid, and a teenager. They are more than happy with their YouTube, Netflix, and Internet shenanigans.
But wait, there's more. Lo and behold, our former cable provider (Spectrum) offered us a good deal to come back to them--we could choose any ten cable channels we wanted (a la carte), plus have the major OTA channels (ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX/PBS) included and not counted among the 10 chosen channels, for a very low price of $20/month. As we live in an area where even the best (expensive) antennae never worked to receive those local channels, we jumped at the chance and now our tv experience is complete. Our (already bought) Roku streamers basically work in place of those cable set-top boxes that I hated paying ridiculous monthly "rental" fees for. Our total monthly bill now, for our high speed internet and cable tv (of channels we actually WATCH), is a fraction of what it was before. A win-win overall.

I couldn't get over how easy this was to set up and install and it is just as easy to use. The voice activated feature eliminates having to even press some of the buttons on the remote, which is a big deal when watching tv in low light. While I love the device I can't say Roku service is as good. I had questions regarding the portability of the device and dealing with Roku support was not productive.

I love my Roku! The apps stopped working on one of my TVs and I have a couple of non smart TV's so now we can stream all of our favorite apps on them. This Roku is very high speed and I love that I can control the volume and turn the TV's on and off with the remote. Also, they are very easy to set up. I can also use my phone as a remote and even plug in my headphones to my phone to watch TV in private. I also like that I can set up themes and screensavers and buy premium channels off of the Roku as well. All of this is at a very reasonable price. I paid 30 to 40 bucks for mine during sales. Also it can play back in HD HDR and 4k.

I have had the Roku 3 for a couple of years now and absolutely love it. So when we needed another streaming device for a different room I could pass up on the Roku stick. It works well and has all the best features of my Roku box. The only down side is the distance it sticks out. My TV doesn't have a side HDMI port so the stick is inserted in the back. It doesn't stick out crazy far but just enough that I had to reposition my TV. Overall, I couldn't have made a better decision for the price.

I originally researched Chromecast Ultra and it was my choice until I decided that using my phone all the time could get tedious. So I chose to go with the Roku instead. 2 TV's, 2 Roku"s , 2 antennaes (antenai?) and I'm becoming quite pleased with the results. So many options and considering what my satilite bill was I can get a lot more 'bang for the buck'

Our kitchen television had a roku 2, but as the least-used TV in the house , it was thought we could upgrade to the "stick" from Roku, then easily "grab n go" with it on vacations. It's fast, just as easy to use as any other, and it even found the (infrared) remote frequencies automatically for on/off and volume on our 22" Vizio set. Impressive!
On the "other" side of the review, we did have to hit the (very small) "reset" button once for the wifi to take. When new out of the box, the Roku 3800 stick would find our wifi, go through credentials entry, then only connect to wifi, not to our network...and it sat...and it sat.... So, a bit of googling later, one reset was performed and it's run flawlessly since. We're powering this Roku stick from the TV's USB power which is not always-on, but so far, it boots so quickly we have roku all-channel access about the time the Vizio clears it's log and selects last input-used. No delay worth mentioning. Not all TV's may have the power to run it, and we may switch it to the provided USB adapter to see if there's any improvement in any part of the performance, but ...it doesn't need to improve.
Hopefully the "hotel login" function will work well when we take it traveling. BTW we did order the HDMI extension from ROKU via the instructions, and it was here in less than a week.
GREAT little streaming stick...simplified our remote control needs, too.

I purchased this device to replace a PS3 that finally died. I'd had Roku devices in the past and was unhappy with them, as they felt cheap, especially the remotes (I hate using a smart phone as a remote). To my surprise, Roku really vastly improved their products. The remote is excellent and has a nice feel to it, and the features are great. Highly recommend.

I had previously tried the roku express model and it is junk. That's the 29.99 (on sale) entry level model they make. It freezes all the time and it's annoying. This model works fine. It doesn't freeze up. Occasionally it will need to be reset though there is a button on the stick you push and it resets. The remote control for this model is very nice and durable. The streaming choices are ok. I have Philo streaming TV, YouTube, Pandora, and MLB.TV on most of the time. MLB.TV and Philo are paid channels, Philo is the least expensive as far as I can tell for quality programming at a really good price.
