Smart Blind Ctrl Needs Add On For True Convenience

The Ryse SmartShade is a device that lets you automate window blinds. This one is specifically for the blinds which use the bead like chain like those typically found on pull cords for turning on and off an overhead light. Aside from needing a compatible blind, you'll also need space on a wall near where the chain runs to mount the SmartShade device itself.
Installation is pretty straightforward. There's a back cover near the top of the SmartShade that's removeable. You'd run the chain in there and around a sproket which has circular cutouts that effectively clamp and pull on the beads in the chain. There's a mounting plate that you'd need to screw into the wall in which the SmartShade docks. Power can be provided by the included removable battery pack or directly via the charger for a wired connection.
Next is pairing the SmartShade to the Ryse app. This is pretty straightforward using Bluetooth. The app walks you through the discovery and pairing process letting you name the shade (after all, you likely have multiple of the same type of blind in your home) then configuring the top and bottom positions of the SmartShade. It was at this point that I actually realized there were buttons on the SmartShade to let you control it. You'd use those to configure the top-most and bottom-most position. The battery charges via USB-C and is supposed to be good for 6 months on a single charge.
The operation of the shade worked well. My shade as it was didn't previously bind and things ran smoothly. Using the button to manually adjust things was nice, but hardly saved much time over walking up and doing it manually previously. You can adjust the speed in the app, so perhaps there's technically some time savings to be had or convenience as sometimes operating the chain yourself can be a two hand job. Using the app was often much nicer. Unfortunately, since this only pairs over Bluetooth, to get true hands free control via a smart speaker or similar device, you'd need yet another device, a SmartBridge. It's a bit annoying as this requires yet another purchase to get what's kinda a important feature to truly make this convenient. And given that this is only Bluetooth, unless it has some other long range wireless interface built-in, I may need multiple of the SmartBridges if I want full coverage of my house!
In all, I think the SmartShade is a well designed device with a slick app. I like that it can operate standalone without needing an internet connection. It runs smoothly and if the battery claims are correct, makes for a pretty sleek install where there's little point in having the thing wired permanently to a power supply. The app is well designed, minimalistic but easy to use. I'm only docking one star for the relative barrier to expansion (need the bridge) and that it's limited to a specific type of blind.

Great product, but useless without the SmartBridge

The Ryse SmartShade is a really cool product with a fatal flaw. When it comes to actually controlling a chain driven window shade, the Ryse SmartShade does exactly what it claims on the box. It lets you either press a button to move the chain or use a smartphone app. However, just having electonic controls doesn't make something "smart" and I think it's terribly misleading to put that in the name when this product is not an IoT product on its own.
For some reason, the SmartShade doesn't include any common smart home protocols to be able to control directly from a smart hub, or even just WiFi so you can control it over the internet. As a result, you have to purchase a separate SmartBridge device to get the features that actually make the device "smart." Without the extra SmartBridge, you cannot set schedules or routines and you cannot control the shade remotely. Given the relatively high cost of this SmartShade pack plus the cost of the SmartBridge, I'd have to have many windows that were able to be controlled with the Bridge to make it worthwhile. I don't know what the range on the SmartBridge is to the SmartShades so I can't say whether a normal home would be covered by one SmartBridge, so that's a big question mark, too.
The combo of the SmartShade and battery pack makes for a wire-free install which improves the flexibility quite a bit. While I find it aesthetically pleasing, it's not exactly a tiny device so keep that in mind.
In my opinion, this could be a 4 star product if the units which are sold without the SmartBridge in the box were labeled as a "SmartShade add-on pack." It could be a 5 star product if it had Zigbee or Z-wave built-in and didn't need the bridge at all. As marketed right now, it's extremely overpriced to just get a button to press to raise and lower your window shades.

It is nice to have an option to alter the blind position without having to go up to the window or use your hands. At the push of the button you can adjust the level of shade coming into your home. Relatively easy to install. Some minor hiccups in the process, but I’m not a master of home improvement. We have windows up high that cause blinding light at certain times of day. It was nice to have an option to be able to adjust the blinds from ground level. It connects to the app and can be used via voice commands with your virtual assistant. It works with beaded blind strings. The battery lasts for a few hours and will notify you in the app when it needs to be charged. You need a smart bridge in order to use the voice commands and connect it with your Wi-Fi control center. Worried about damaging your window? Don’t worry you can mount it with double sided adhesive so you don’t have to put holes in the frame. It’s fairly quiet and not bothersome. It is rechargeable just like a cell phone so you won’t need to constantly replace batteries.

This worked well for about a week, but since the latest app update I keep getting bluetooth errors. I bought these for hard to reach shades, so having to consistently reconnect the bluetooth manually negates the purpose.

An elegant solution for older shades

So my shades are in perfect condition, and are 20+ years old... And today, these shades would be $1000+ to replace with "smart" ones. So this product fits the need I had, perfectly.
Let's start about physical setup first: If you are comfortable with basic tools, this won't take very long. Just measure 3 times (unless you are really good).. you don't want to make this too tight or too loose, need to get it just right in the sweet spot, before you make the holes in your wall. Once you got it fitted, the physical installation is really easy.
Now let's talk about what I think is the coolest thing they did.. the battery pack. This was 95% well thought out (see below for the other 5%). being able to charge this pack, and bring the battery pack to the unit. Very easy to use. Just clip it in, leave it. Remove, charge, and boom... done. Very easy to use.
Digital Setup:
Okay, so if you really want to make this a "smart" device, you need the Ryse bridge, sold separately. A little added cost, but.. that is really where this gets to make's mark. Side note: Setting up the Ryse bridge was painless, about 4 clicks in the app.
So.. the App: Nit Pick #1: The app needs to be able to supported iOS stored passwords. I like to use complicated passwords that are unique to everything. So, the lack of using the iCloud was disappointing.
Setting up the bridge first, was really easy and simple. Connected to the router, and then in the app it appears, takes about 1 minute to pair it.
Then to setup the opener, was about 1 minute more. very straight forward, was able to rename at it at setup. it walks you through The full open and Full close settings, with just a push of the physical buttons, get it to where you need it, and save. Very simple.
Next was the step that wasn't mentioned in the app, but I knew. To setup Alexa, you need to go into the Alexa app and add the skill. (and then this is where the stored password would have been nice). But Alexa was easy to setup and add to group.
Nit Pick #2: This is listed as a "lock" in Alexa. While it isn't a Lock, it simply does have an open/close setting. The part I didn't like, is that with the scroller bar in Alexa, all the way to the left 0%, mean fully open. The all the way to the right 100%, means fully close... doesn't seem correct to me.
Quiet, easy to use, it has the power to open and close my shades very easy.
Okay, now for the 5% deduction, and the full star loss.
Why in the world in 2023, is this still using Micro-USB? And the bridge as well. Yes, a cable was provided, a short one at that. BUT!!! it is 2023. This should be USB-C all the way, both devices. So yes, maybe not worth a whole start deduction, but I can't do a half or a quarter. USB-C please.

SmartShade control solves ergonomic problems.

RYSE - SmartShade. We’ll probably buy a few more of these remote shade controls for purely indulgent reasons. In other words because I can be lazy. Isn’t that why we have any remote controls, anyway? This wonderful gadget has solved our geometry problem.
Our most useful shade is also our most annoying. It’s the black-out shade that sits 4 ft off the ground, but also 2.5 feet set back behind our kitchen sink, and the chain control is still higher. It covers the primary window directly across the open family from my 84”TV. Just as I prepare to watch programming later in the day, the bright western sun is displayed nicely on this screen. I think you can figure out the rest. My lovely 5’4” wife hasn’t got a chance, and my added 5” isn’t much more help when we lower each evening and raise it each morning.. The RYSE SmartShade solves the problem.
SETUP: The initial installation is a puzzle. No instructions in the box. No directions to a web tutorial. And don’t even think about intuitively attaching the device to your beaded chain, because none of the several button switches do anything yet, at this point. You need to find your way to the RYSE web site where you’re instructed to download an iOS app. In the App, you get a step by step install guide. You will want to remove the lower chain guide/anchor that came with your shade. Everything else is easy with a well thought out sprocket drive, and mechanical guide. The RYSE instructions clearly show how to determine the best window frame location, and two screws complete the job once you’ve properly located a motor assembly. You will need to push past the “bridge” install instructions and pursue the Bluetooth connection to get that motor moving and set your ”stops”. Again, not very intuitive.
Your shade’s beaded chain needs to be fairly tight as it enters/exits the Smart/shade device. I strongly recommend trying to avoid a “connecting” bead link pass through the device if at all possible. I had no choice, and a connecting bead actually chewed away a piece of the sprocket. Partly because my chain was too loose and partly because my connecting bead had a sharp edge it did some damage. Contacting RYSE support was very reassuring and they sent me another sprocket which is pretty easy to replace.
PERFORMANCE: The motor is very powerful and easily moves the chain through the mechanism. It looks like a fairly large shade can be managed. Once you’ve enabled the Bluetooth connection to the RYSE, everything is very easy to control. You don’t have to leave your seat, but you will need your phone. Otherwise, tap the buttons on the motor assembly. You can permanently plug in the power cable or instead charge the battery pack and attach it. All this must be considered early on in the install process to be sure you have sufficient clearance under the motor assembly.
CONCLUSION: The RYSE SmartShade can make awkwardly placed shades much easier to use. With the added features of the Bridge, a rather complex array of shades can be managed and scheduled. But with the device and your phone, there is sufficient control for a few shades. There is also potential for some frustrations. I’m going to need to figure out how to manage connection beads to minimize interfering with the movement of the chain through the mechanism. We like our newest automation gadget, but setup required more guesswork than necessary.

Turning old shades into smart ones

Ryse SmartShade is a motorized device that converts your existing window shades into an app controlled wireless smart shade. It comes with a rechargeable battery pack that powers the SmartShade for extended usage (up to 6 months according to Ryse). The package includes SmartShade, mounting brackets with screws and anchors, battery pack with a charging cable. The setup is easy and step by step installation is guided via the RYSE app. The unit is compatible with plastic or metal beaded chain that comes with your shades.
The device is controlled via the control panel that is on the front side of the unit as well as on the App. There is no Wi-Fi on the device, which means you can only connect to the app via Bluetooth. To use remote or voice control of the shades, you will need to get the Ryse SmartBridge hub, which is not included with this bundle. The hub allows you to control up to ten shades as well as set up automation and integrate with smart home setup.
The motor itself is powerful and quiet when operating. It feels like it can lift heavy shades with ease. Make sure to charge your battery fully before setting up the shades. The battery is charged via a micro-USB cable. If you are looking to automate your existing window shades with easy-to-use controls, do look into this.

I always wanted to have a way to control my window shades and thankfully RYSE has made something very affordable and available now. The RYSE SmartShade is a very easy solution to control your shades from pretty much anywhere in your house. One disclaimer though: it will only work with a certain type of shades, namely the ones that use a beaded, looped chain or the one with a bead connection.
So all in all, the RYSE SmartShade is a cool motorized controller that can be used to control pull chain operated window shades or blinds. The SmartShade can be controlled using the local buttons or remotely via Bluetooth connections and the RYSE app. The RYSE SmartShade can be installed by mounting it onto a nearby wall and fitting it directly onto a plastic or metal beaded chain.
The RYSE BatteryPack is included with your set and it provides a wire-free option to power the RYSE SmartShade with up to 6 months of operation on a single charge.
I did knock down one star, due to needing a separate purchase of SmartBridge in order to integrate this controller with your Google Assistant or Alexa, otherwise if you don't plan to use your assistants, this device it more than enough to start using right out the of box (with the help of its own app).
I find this SmartShade controller pretty useful and I might get the SmartBridge to automate my shades down the road. I like how it is easy to install and get it going in no time.

Make your Windows Shades Smart, best with bridge

Smart shades have been on my wish list for a long time but I have no standard windows, so my only option has been to get new custom shades. The Ryse smart shade is an alternative, letting you make your legacy beaded shades smart.
In the box you get
- Ryse SmartShade Controller Motor
- Ryse Battery Pack + USB to micro USB charger
- Mounting Brackets + Screws
The battery is removable and rechargable (rated for 6 months, I cannot vouch for that as it has only been a weekend). The combined Controller + Battery pack is about 8" tall. I wish the batter charged by USB C, I'm so desperate to get away from micro USB.
There's no instructions in the box or even a QR code to scan (odd). So I started with downloading the Ryse app (tip, in iOS it's the utilities one, not the social fitness app). The app requires an email and password to setup, then you get installation videos instructions. It took me about 30min to install, most of which was measuring, drilling, and making sure the beaded chain was taunt in the Ryse.
Then I was able to pair the Ryse via Bluetooth and follow the steps to set the open and shut position for my existing shades. The whole process was better than I expected. There's an option to set the speed at which the shades move, the faster the louder. Even at max speed, the motor is quiet and given the noise, at least in my home, the beaded chain and shades make as they open, it's impressive the motor is so quiet. Definitely a 10/10 on the motor.
Everything about the Ryse smart shade is controlled by the app over Bluetooth. You can set open and close routines (start/end of day) and even group multiple Ryse units together. I couldn't do the latter as I only have one Ryse. I will note (and why I took off a star) the real smart home remote benefits require an additional and optional Ryse bridge which is not included in this bundle (not sure if it's in others). Otherwise, everything is done via the app and the app is nice and works very well. In fact I am super impressed with the app.
The whole thing I am not sure of with Ryse is, is it worth the upgrade? The Ryse is a quality piece of kit - it looks premium, and given it has a motor to do the work (what other smart thing could you own that does?) it's a serious investment. There are some limitations, it's for beaded shades only - fortunate that the largest window in our home has a beaded sun shade. If you are corded, the Ryse won't meet your needs (the FAQ says it's an optional kit for vertical blinds only - but I don't have and can't test, but the vertical shades restriction on corded shades may rule out some).
I really am not sure how to score the Ryse. It works for me, the app is great, and it does what I wish but it's not compatible with all shades. I kind of think Ryse is best for people who have a single large window the want to automate. As a whole of home solution, I just don't know because without the bridge and given the limitations of Bluetooth - it's hard to know if it would scale without a bridge. I'm happy though, so for me the Ryse is a 4/5.

Firstly, the app is a little clunky. I signed up and created an account. I picked the product I have but the first part of the installation, it wants me to connect the Ryse bridge to my network. The product I got did not come with a bridge so I backed up. But it didn’t fully log me in so it looked like I had to create an account again.
Next, you have to charge the battery with the included micro USB cable. It seemed like I pushed it in all the way but the LED didn’t light up. So I thought it’s probably charged already. It’s not so I tried the cable again and wiggled it around, then the LED lit a solid red. So if you’re charging, make sure the cable is plugged all the way in and you see the LED indicator lit up.
The account creation and installation/configuration of the device using the app can use a bit of a redesign. It’s a little confusing for me. I eventually backed out and started over and was able to just find my way around with a little bit more effort.
Because this did not come with a bridge, you will be connecting to it with your phone’s bluetooth. After getting to the configuration guide, the steps became simpler.
I took it over my parent’s house because their shades have beaded chains. I adjusted the open and close setting to the proper height. This part is fairly simple to do than configuring the app in the initial process.
Overall, it is a nice device. The app set up may be a bit confusing to novice users. If they can improve the instructions and workflow of the app setup, I believe this product would improve.

It's very nice to be able to raise, partially raise, and lower your shades or blinds with your phone. That said, it's not very practical but hey, neither are RGB LED light bulbs. We went a long time without smart bulbs in our home that can change to any color via an app. Now we can add the ability to raise and lower our window treatments. Again, very cool but with one large caveat; you need one for each window. This home upgrade could be very cost prohibitive if you are trying to cover multiple rooms with the high-tech shade pullers. The system is really great. I can't knock it down one star. They have thought of almost everything. The system installs fairly easy and the inclusion of a battery makes it very versatile to install anywhere. Nothing would be worse than a plug in power cable and having no plug near the window. That is a non-issue with the battery pack. I have yet to exhaust the battery to need its first charge after about two weeks. It is rated to last a half of a year until it needs its charge. That kind of battery life negates the obvious update to a possible solar option in the future. If you're only charging twice a year, why bother with a solar install option? I would welcome a multi-pack option as my rooms have more than one window.

Retrofitted my blinds

I retrofitted my blinds with Ryse and it was easy to install. I tested the Ryse on blinds with metal and plastic beaded chain blinds and there were no issues with the Ryse on a 69”width window covering. I decided to install the Ryse in a difficult to pull window treatment behind a bed headboard. Before the Ryse, the window was always covered by the blinds because it was such a pain to open and close the blinds behind the headboard, but now all I need to do is hit a button. Now, if you want to take it a step further you’ll need to get the hub to get smart and get voice control features. All in all I think I will buy two more to fit the rest of the problem blinds in my house because it solves a problem I have had which was impacting the amount of light entering my home. Now I can easily control the natural light instead of always having the blinds closed. If you want to get the most you need to get the hub to get into more complex tasks which may be worth it to you, depending on what your needs are.

This is my first attempt to automate my one and only shade. I’m now retired and like to automate things that I can do manually; you know, like turning on a light by pressing the on/off switch. I mean, who wants to do that!
Anyways, setting up the RYSE Smartshade was pretty easy. Pair it to your phone, then follow the tutorial instructions that appear on your phone. Every step was super easy, so much so anyone should be able to do it.
I wasn’t fully aware that this unit - as sold - doesn’t support Wi-Fi but does support Bluetooth. If you desire, you could purchase the Hub which will give you more control over this unit. While I was generally pleased with how it worked using the more limited Bluetooth, I am tempted to upgrade. I really didn’t prefer having to pull out my phone to get the RYSE to work when all my other technologies handle voice commands and/or automated routines. For example, I would like the RYSE to automatically close the shade at 10pm and automatically open the shade at 8am. But it is what it is.
Once paired to my phone, the next step was to instruct the unit to the shade’s stop points. That is, when to stop raising or lowering the shade.
I should note that I gave the battery pack a full charge when I first received the unit. The battery has an indicator light on it that reflects battery level, but three days after charging the battery during which time I wasn’t ready to use it, the app was already showing a drop to 88% full. Perhaps it wasn’t as fully charged as I thought after the first charging effort. I don’t know.
Except for my iPhone, virtually all my devices support USB-C port connectors. I mention this because I was surprised to find that the battery pack uses a Micro-USB port. I didn’t have one, so I had to borrow a neighbor’s cable to get this around requirement.
The RYSE SmartShade this is an attractive looking device that is easy to set up for Bluetooth use. I’m sure I’ll be playing with it for the next few months before deciding if I want to upgrade it by adding a Hub and to see how it stands up to daily usage.

RYSE Smart Shade with Battery Pack

The RYSE SmartShade with BatteryPack comes with a controller and battery along with a USB charging cord. There is also the mounting hardware. After sliding the cover off you attach the metal bead chain to the plastic gear. After making sure the metal clip for the chain is safely out of the way, will not engage in the plastic gear while opening and closing the smart shade you can position the controller and mark for the brackets. The controller will also accept blinds that have a corded pull string. The motor is powerful enough to open/close the blinds.
Charging initially may take up to twelve hours. The charging interface is a USB-A to micro-USB. The cable does come with a power supply. The battery also is not the standard USB-C plug. The battery micro-USB location is on the bottom of the battery, this will allow you to run the power cord from a power supply to the battery. A standard USB-A to USB-A power extension cord can be used.
There is an application available to assist with the set-up and installation of the device. The application is lacking in detail and not very user friendly. However, the device does not come with the RYSE Smart Hub, thus only allowing remote control from the RYSE Application, that works quite well. The device has open/close buttons along with led lights showing the position of the shade.
The RYSE SmartShade will turn any shade with a beaded chain or circular cord into a fully remote-controlled Shade.

I wish I had good things to say about the product - but for what this promises to be, it falls way short.
If all you need is an automated shade puller - great you have this to use by pressing the buttons on the device. The only thing you need to make sure is that you set the correct upper and lower limit - otherwise this machine applies enough force to break your shade's chain. It happened to me - and I am not going to blame it since it was after all my mistake, I kept my thumb on the up button even when it had rolled all the way back up. Although, it would have been great if it had a fail safe if it encounters sufficient resistance.
That aside though, the promise of a "smart" shade was dashed. The Bluetooth connectivity is finicky - trying to open or close the shade through the app cannot be relied upon. Sometimes it will not even perform any action, and sometimes it will stop the action in the middle, and not open/close to the %age we want it to. It even happens sometimes with the physical button controls on the device itself. If you want to long hold so it opens fully or closes fully, it doesn't always listen to you and will stop in the middle. As for being "smart", to be truly connected to your personal assistants you need to buy a separate smartbridge from RYSE, which I did not have and so could not use any of those features.
The installation itself was simple enough, although getting the exact height where the controller is attached to the wall, can also be a bit hit and miss. I was left with a bit of slack on my chain, again can't blame it, perhaps I was not precise enough in my measuring. But there are no tools that come with this to make it any easier. There are also 0 instructions in the box. You have to know to download the app and view the instructions in that.
As for the battery , it came with a 35% charge and was depleted within a week of installation.
So, overall my frustration is apparent and if it cannot be relied upon to complete the task every time, then it just ends up taking more time than its supposed to save. Plus the extra smartbridge needed for personal assistant integration is a huge bummer

Important note: Ryse is what used to be AXIS, which was one of the first companies out that offered smart blind technology to the masses. The company has made tremendous strides from back when this was first available back around 2015.
Right out of the box, you have the main system that houses the motor and the rotating mechanism that controls your shades. The major limitation here is that it requires a beaded-chain; i.e. the rope version will not work with this device. This device is bluetooth and wifi-enabled meaning you can control it direct from your phone on B/T but also do it through wifi. The wifi function allows you to make it work with a voice assistant like Siri (via HomeKit), Alexa, or Google Assistant. I set mine up with wifi so I can get it to be automated with a schedule through HomeKit in iOS. I only have one installed but I BELIEVE if you want to have multiple with simultaneous operation, you'll have to use a Ryse Smart Bridge (connects directly to your router) to consolidate all the operations.
Size limitations - Ryse states that you can use this for shades that are up to 108" wide x 9' tall, with a maximum weight lift capacity of approximately 10 pounds. I doubt many people have weight specs for their blinds but this is a heavy amount of force in the Ryse's small package.
Ryse App - the app in the iOS store only has 2/5 stars but I found it to work completely fine. I don't know what you'd expect from this app other than for it to make a blind go up and down, there isn't much to it. Maybe the bad reviews are from a while back because it works completely fine now.
BatteryPack - I think this is the kicker as hardwiring this device is doable but ugly. I think recharging this every few months is much better than having it use up an available plug, and let's be honest, hardwiring it is kind of ugly. I'd recommend making sure the device is mounted high enough that you have enough clearance in the bottom for the BatteryPack and then some so that you can plop it off.
Overall, HIGHLY recommend!

This is such amazing product. So easy to install and a fraction of the price of other smart shade on the market. I'll be installing more roller shades in my house just so that I can use RYSE on all of them.
