AWESOME when it works.
Nightmare when it doesn’t. Mine didn’t come with the proper cable.
Tried Samsung OEM cable, aftermarket adapter options and only one of them worked. 2 days later, back to 0 display.
Absolutely absurd for a monitor at this price point.

I purchased this item as an open box in excellent condition. Took it home and it was missing a vesa mount. I called customer service and they advised me to go to the location where I bought it from and see if they have it there. So I did and the gentleman at the front was clueless and said he couldn’t help me. I called customer service again and was transferred 4 times just so that someone can tell me they can’t get me one. I wish I was told that from the beginning. Unfortunately to get a hold of a vesa mount, they cost well over 100 dollars which is very expensive. It’s been 16 days and the monitor acts weird when I try to turn it on. It acts like it doesn’t want to and I have to unplug or press the power button. It’s too late and I can’t return it. It’s a beautiful display but it’s starting to show its flaws.

PROS
+ QD-OLED display is simply gorgeous
+ Highly customizable settings to tune picture, sound, and gaming settings to your preference
+ Basically instant 0.03ms response time makes input lag almost non-existent
+ 175hz Freesync Pro display for high refresh rate VRR gaming
+ Super slim and sleek metal frame
+ Some subtle but nice RGB lighting
+ Gaming Hub lets you easily adjust/view game settings
+ Surprisingly decent built in speakers
CONS
- Tizen OS is pretty slow/laggy on the monitor
- Built-In GeForce Now app doesn’t take advantage of the ultrawide resolution or high refresh rate
- It is nice to have a remote, but it is pretty limited in terms of functionality
- Only one display port and one HDMI port
- Uses a much less common Micro HDMI port and does not include HDMI cable in the box
THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT
The Samsung Odyssey G8 OLED is a simply stunning monitor. If you have ever used an OLED display, you know that the deep blacks and color reproduction are second to none, and the Samsung G8 takes this one step further by using their QD-OLED display, which has even more saturated and rich colors than I have ever seen. Add to that the 34” curved 3440x1440 display, and it makes for a very immersive gaming experience. And when it comes to gaming, the monitor really does have the chops to stand-up with the best of them. You get a 175hz refresh rate, 0.03ms response time, VRR courtesy of AMD Freesync Pro, a dedicated “Gaming Hub” with specific game setting adjustments, and even some subtle RGB lighting on the back. Add-in all of the picture and sound adjustment options (way more than I can mention here) and you have a truly outstanding monitor for those who want some of the best picture quality you can get. Even the sound coming from the monitor’s speakers is surprisingly good, with clear dialogue and even a bit of directionality to the sound when gaming.
I enjoyed gaming on this display greatly, and after calibrating the various picture modes to my standards, I was frequently sitting there stunned by just how beautiful the picture looked. This is my first ultrawide monitor, and for games that support native ultrawide resolutions, it really is incredibly immersive. If you like to play in a dark room like I do, the QD-OLED picture frequently looks like I am staring through a window into the game world, the contrast, pure black levels, and depth of the image is just that good. The response time was also incredible, and even when gaming using GeForce Now to stream games on my PC, I found the display input lag to be basically imperceptible. I do wish this was a full 4K vertical resolution, since I am used to gaming on 4K TVs and Monitors, but the 1440p vertical resolution is still very good at this screen size, and the ultrawide resolution goes a long way to making the lower vertical resolution much less of a loss for me.
There is so much to love about this monitor, but there are a few design decisions that keep it from being a 5-star product for me. First among these is the IO on the monitor, but your mileage may vary with this depending on your needs. You do get a couple of USB-C ports, a micro HDMI port, and a mini DisplayPort, but that is pretty much it. So if you tend to use multiple HDMI devices for example, you will need a dock or other solution to accommodate them. Additionally, I was a bit confused why the display was using Micro HDMI, which is much less common, especially with modern monitors, other than maybe to keep the profile of the monitor as slim as possible. Samsung also doesn’t supply an HDMI cable in the box, so you will need to get a micro HDMI cable yourself if you have an HDMI device you want to connect. Samsung does provide a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable though, so there is that for desktop gaming. For me personally, I would have loved full size HDMI and/or multiple HDMI ports, but it does help keep the profile slimmer with fewer ports, so at least there is that.
My other complaint on the hardware front is the included remote. While a nice addition (especially given the OS), it is a pretty simple remote and a bit limited in functionality. While you can shortcut to various streaming services for example, getting to most settings requires long-pressing buttons, which when combined with the very slow OS, can become tedious if you want to navigate the menus frequently. On that note, the OS (which uses the same Tizen OS that is used in Samsung’s TVs), does have a lot of available apps and allows you to stream without even needing to attach an external computer. This could be a nice feature, except that the software is noticeably slow, which makes it less appealing if you have any PC attached. It feels a lot like using an older Smart TV, where the speed and lack of usability makes an external streaming device (like a PC) much more appealing. Again, this isn’t an issue if you don’t intend to use the monitor as a “smart monitor”, but since it does likely contribute to the cost of the monitor, I would certainly prefer a simpler monitor with a lower price. Even some apps, like GeForce Now, are clearly built for TVs, since the available resolutions are only 16:9 1080p and 4K, and only up to 60 fps, meaning if you want to use GeForce Now to stream games to the monitor, you need an external PC to take advantage of the monitor’s ultrawide and high refresh rate gaming benefits, a bit defeating the purpose of having “smart monitor” in the first place.
And that really sums up my feelings on the display. It's an incredible monitor in many regards, but the limited IO, and half-baked feeling Tizen OS integration really feel like Samsung was trying to throw too much at one monitor. If they can release a paired back and less expensive version without the smart OS, but keeping the display and response time, you would probably have one of the best monitors of all time. Even still, if you want one of, if not the best, monitor picture qualities on the market, you don’t have to look much further than this.

First off, let me start off and say that once you go OLED, you will not want to use anything else. The fact the Samsung has managed to get an incredible low .1ms response time, and 175hz in a thin, light, 1440p OLED panel is amazing.
The Setup itself was extremely easy. To attached the base to the monitor itself took main 5 minutes. Speaking of the base…it is a nice, clean looking piece of metal that gives off a minimalistic vibe. I for one love it. So, the monitor itself is extremely light, and thin, which is incredible considering the picture quality it produces.
Now, the screen. I cannot begin to emphasize how brilliant the picture quality is on this monitor. I would highly suggest pulling up HDR content to get the full effect of this monitor. As a gamer, the .1ms response time and 175hz is the just what I want in a monitor, but you toss in QD-OLED quality picture, and it makes for one of the best gameplay experiences.
This does come with the TIZEN OS with GAMING HUB installed which now a days is very nice to have. You have the ability to stream XBOX games (just add a controller via Bluetooth), utilize GEFORCENOW, LUNA, etc. This display also includes VRR via AMD Freesync Pro, which is nice for consoles that can utilize VRR. Also, you do get a remote with the display, and it is not the best, but it does its job.
Overall, this is a top-of-the-line smart monitor for gamers and non-gamers a like (although I would have to lean towards gamers mostly). You will not be disappointed if you purchase this for media consumption, work, and/or play. The only complaint I would have is the decision to use mico-HDMI and micro-Displayport ports in the back of the monitor. Those cables are not ready for the big leagues imo (they did include a micro-Displayport to displayport cable in the box).

OLED: This is the way

Samsung has been hard at work to release new and innovative hardware. The G-Series gaming monitors have a solid reputation, but the G8 OLED UWD is a class of its own.
This ultra wide screen curved monitor is loaded with goodies. The first time you'll turn it on, you will be welcomed by a neat assistant which will allow you to connect and set the monitor up to your WIFI network to obtain updates and run the "smart" features such as streaming services. If you own a recent Samsung TV, you will recognize the interface and the menus as they are almost identical. The monitor comes with a remote which allows you to navigate the interface and use the screen almost as a regular TV.
Once the setup is done, you can connect your computer to the monitor using the included Display port to Mini Display port cable. Note that this monitor does NOT come with a HDMI to Micro HDMI cable or adapter. This is probably the biggest flaw as most consoles or other devices use regular HDMI to connect to TVs and monitors. It also features 2 Type C connectors.
The screen itself is OLED and in comparison with any other screen I own, it's simply gorgeous. The colors are vibrant and the image is beautiful and sharp. The blacks are deep and dark. HDR is available and it allows for an incredible rendering in games and movies. Frankly, this is by far the best monitor in its class. The screen is very thin which is a boon if you don't have a lot of room on your desk. It also features speakers which are surprisingly good. The design is elegant and comfortable.
The RGB ring on the back can be changed to your liking or to light up according to the image displayed, which enhances immersion. The response time is crazy low and the maximum refresh rate is very high, allowing your graphics card to render games and videos smoothly, which makes it an excellent monitor for gamers, as it also provides several tools such as a hardware cross hair, AMD Freesync Premium and other enhancements. Content creators and graphics designers will love the size of the screen, as well as the color rendering which is paramount to produce good prints.
To be entirely honest, it's hard to find something negative to say about this monitor. Note that if you have a Samsung TV in the same room, your TV remote might interfere with the G8 as they seem to use the same frequencies.
The Samsung Odyssey 34" OLED G8 is a top of the line monitor which is extremely polyvalent and comes packed full with features and a massive and gorgeous screen. I highly recommend it.

A Rocky Start But Well Worth It

My experience with the Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 was a bit of a mixed bag. Don't get me wrong though, after everything is said and done, this monitor is capable of producing the most incredible picture quality that you've likely ever seen on a current gen gaming monitor (at 1440p that is). However, the journey to get there for me was a bit of a frustrating path (albeit, one that was worth it). Upon unboxing the Samsung Odyssey G8 OLED, I was greeted with an extremely simple assembly process: 1. Screw the base into the stand 2. Snap the stand onto the back of the display 3. Place on your desk! In terms of aesthetics, Samsung knocked it out of the park. I love the design of this monitor with it's extremely thin bezels and it's minimalist stand. The build quality of the display is a combination of plastic and aluminum which helps keep the monitor light without sacrificing on premium build quality.
My trials and tribulations with the G8 OLED began when connecting the monitor via the included Mini-Display Port to Display Port cable to my graphics card. For reference, I have an AMD XFX Radeon 6900 XT. For the life of me, I could not get the fully rated specs of 175Hz @ 3440x1440 resolution with HDR10 (10 bit color space) enabled. Using the included Mini-DP to DP cable, the highest color depth I was able to achieve at 175Hz @ 3440x1440 resolution was 6-bit. I ensured that my AMD Adrenalin drivers were fully up to date, made sure all Windows updates were up to date, and also made sure the monitor had the latest firmware (which it installed during setup). I then spent hours trying different settings in AMD Adrenalin as well as Windows to achieve 10-bit at 3440 x 1440 with 175Hz to no avail. I decided to order a Micro HDMI adapter (to standard HDMI on the other end) as well as a Micro HDMI to HDMI cable to see if I had better results in achieving full 10 bit color depth at the rated specs. My results was a mixed bag of sorts. Here are the results I achieved with both Mini-DP to DP and Micro HDMI to HDMI setups:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GPU: AMD XFX Speedster MERC319 Radeon 6900 XT Black w/ HDMI 2.1 VRR and FRL & DP 1.4 with DSC
Latest AMD Adrenalin Drivers: 23.2.2
Results using included Mini-DP to DP cable:
Resolution: 3440 x 1440
Refresh Rate: 175Hz
Color Depth: 6-bit
Pixel Format: RGB 4:4:4 Pixel Format PC Standard (Full RGB)
Notes: I was unable to select 8-bit or 10-bit color depth at this resolution. I was also unable to tweak the chroma subsampling color space settings such as YCbCR 4:2:2 or YCbCR 4:4:4 to try and achive 8-bit or 10-bit color depth.
If I reduced the refresh rate to 120Hz, I was then able to select 10 bpc color depth - RGB 4:4:4 Pixel Format PC Standard (Full RGB)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Results using either Micro HDMI adapter to high speed HDMI cable or Micro HDMI to HDMI cable:
Resolution: 3440 x 1440
Refresh Rate: 175Hz
Color Depth: 8 bpc or "8-bit with dithering"
Pixel Format: RGB 4:4:4 Pixel Format PC Standard (Full RGB)
If I reduced refresh rate to 120Hz, I was then able to select 10 bpc color depth - RGB 4:4:4 Pixel Format PC Standard (Full RGB)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not sure if this is some type of limitation of the specific panel I received or if there's a limiting factor in my personal setup or configuration. However, it's hard to to believe the latter as my GPU is fully HDMI 2.1 & DP 1.4 w/ DSC compliant. I was also using the included Samsung Mini-DP cable that came in the box.
Despite the fact that 8-bit color depth was the highest I was able to achieve, it did not detract from how truly breathtaking the visuals were on this OLED panel. Playing HDR enabled games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Doom Eternal, and Forza Horizon 5 in HDR True black 400 is something that needs to be seen in person. These are the inkiest and darkest blacks I've ever seen on any display. The colors are incredibly vivid and vibrant without being too over saturated. White color uniformity is extremely good without any signs of discoloration. There is zero backlight bleed when viewing dark backgrounds or scenes (an all black background looks like the monitor is powered off!). Tested the 0.1ms response time by playing CS:GO and WOW! Definitely the fastest monitor I've tested. I also love the anti-reflective coating that Samsung used on this monitor. It is by far the best I've ever seen. It has a glass-like effect to it that really makes everything pop. It reminds me of the iconic CRT Viewsonic monitors back in the day with their beautifully rich contrast. Since this is a 1440p monitor, I love how incredibly versatile it's use case is since it's suited for the mid to high end GPU tiers. This would pair perfectly for those with 6800/6900 XTs, 7900XTX/XT, 4070/4080s, 3070/3080/3090s, etc. Some may consider the 4090 to be a bit overkill for it's rated 1440p resolution. However, I would argue that this is still a great monitor for a 4090 as you'd be surprised at the graphical resources required to run certain games consistently at 150+ FPS with all settings maxed out (such as RDR2 or Callisto Protocol). This would also be the monitor I would choose if I decided I was going to play my games with ray tracing on as the performance hit would likely bring you back into 1440p territory (if you prefer playing with higher frame rates) even with a 4090.
Overall, despite the initial color space obstacles with the included Mini DP cable, the time invested in getting the monitor setup and configured properly was well worth it. This is without a doubt the best looking display I've ever seen. After years of using IPS, PLS, and VA panels, I don't think I can ever go back to anything that's not OLED. If I had to list any other cons, it would likely be the somewhat bloated and clunky to navigate Samsung UI. If you're going to use a lot of the multimedia features in the UI, such as the streaming apps like Netflix and Samsung TV Plus (which is free btw!), then you may find it useful. For my personal liking, there's too many button presses required to do simple tasks like change inputs or go directly into your picture settings. On gaming monitors, I personally prefer lightweight and minimalistic menu UIs. Other than that, there's not much to dislike. If you're an avid PC gamer and want the absolute best in-game visuals, I highly suggest you give this monitor a try!

THE Monitor for PC Gaming !
|

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Samsung has ingeniously packaged a smart tv and pc gaming monitor in one, without sacrificing performance of visual integrity. After introducing the hardware portion, I'll split this review into 2 halves; focusing on the smart tv side and monitor side respectively, then rounding out with my pros, cons and overall impressions. I encourage you to read on and inquire if this is the right monitor for you, let's begin shall we?
The Odyssey G8 experience starts with assembly, out of the box you're only required to connect the base and spine via two screws included requiring minimal effort and quick snap to get this beast ready to go. Before I get ahead of myself, the first gripe I ran into was the lack of a standard HDMI port which for the most part, makes the G8 unique. The available options are one micro HDMI 2.1, one mini display port and two usb-c ports. After waiting a couple days to receive an adapter (that I purchased) to convert a standard HDMI cable to mini, it was go time. Initially the ultra thin bezels at first glance are impressive, making for an truly immersive viewing experience. The curved architecture means you'll have a clear picture even when standing or sitting to either side side of the unit. It's sleak silver and metal asthetic is easy on the eyes and definitely won't stick out if the look
of your setup is important. However when front and center, that's when the G8 shines. I will say the stand felt a little unsupportive at first with there being some wiggle room, even after tightening the screws to max. But once you connect the monitor itself, the added weight made it more secure. Inside the box, to my surprise, was also a handheld remote, something you don't see often in the monitor market. This made for smoother control overall without having to lean in and physically select inputs or choose a desired application. Personally, the 34 inch display is my sweet-spot for ultra wide gaming and OLED is still the king of HDR. The addition of a mini display cable helped connect the monitor to my PC right away, which was a plus. Samsung was also kind enough to include a wall mount accessory, if that's more your style, eliminating the need for a stand. Lastly, the G8 requires a
massive power supply (biggest I've seen thus far), just something to keep in mind. After pairing my PC and Xbox series s to the G8, I knew I was in for a treat.
The smart tv side:
As always upon first boot up, you're asked to begin the initial set up process via smart phone or with your remote. After selecting your home network you'll need to download and install any necessary updates, which took about ten minutes, though yours may vary. Once complete your ready to watch Samsung's free live tv service or browse the many smart apps already installed. Samsung really wants you to love their built in OS as they continue to pair it with nearly all of their smart televisions. Some either love it, and some not so much. Since I already own a Samsung smart tv in my living room, I knew what I was getting into out of the gate. I actually like what Samsung has done with the G8 more so, with the grouping of media, gaming hub, workspace and a suite of smart apps that we're all too familiar with. If you already own a Samsung smart tv, you pretty much know what to expect.
There's a home bar that lets you arrange your favorite/recent apps as well as dedicated streaming buttons on the remote to get you in and out with a click. App selections felt snappy and browsing the different hubs was easy to use. Speaking of hubs, the G8 has you covered with the Gaming hub with pre built apps like Nvidia's geforce now, Amazon's Luna service and Xbox cloud gaming. Simply pair a compatible bluetooth controller and enjoy a slice of games waiting to stream to your heart's content. On the game streaming end, it really depends on your individual network speeds. With an unlimited gigabyte download package with AT&T, I was able to stream Fortnite on the cloud with a solid 60 fps though the latency was the real antagonist to my battle royale session. This isn't Samsung's fault, but simply the reality of game streaming on the cloud in the current grid space. Switching gears
from streaming to working is easy too with compatible Samsung Dex functionality, and automatic input detection when booting up a PC.
The monitor side:
I haven't mentioned picture quality yet because I was saving it for this section of the review. With the inclusion of HDR true black and amd freesync premium pro, you'll be constantly impressed with the sheer speed of response time and jaw dropping visuals thanks to the gorgeous QD-LED pannel. Color depth and pixel density is expertly crafted here with deep blacks and bright whites, every scene is superb weather it's picture, video or movies. Everything looks amazing even in their native state thanks to the quantom processor and 3440 x 1440 resolution. The default aspect ratio is 21:9. This unfortunately isn't suported on the current generation of Xbox consoles, though I don't know about playstation. The Xbox series s does work on the G8, but the screen is stretched and games on it will look weird unless you force 16:9. In this case, it's probably not worth using a console with. A small
inconvenience but again, not Samsung's fault. On my PC however, this wasn't an issue. After adjusting the default refresh rate to 175 hz, I was instantly stunned with the clarity and motion on screen. Games like apex legends and hogwarts legacy looked incredible running on an rtx 3080. I ran maximum settings with ease and the freesync technology meant I was always on target. With differences in single and multiplayer games the built in Game Bar came in handy providing quick access to picture modes, game mode, VRR and screen settings. You'll really notice a difference in freesync and low latency when in fast paced high action multiplayer that requires precise timing. And when you want to sit back and immerse yourself in an open world single player title, I was admittedly stopping to inspect every detail of the environments that never looked so good. I might as well talk about the
speakers at this point. Honestly they do just fine and sound good too. No real issues with the sound design so if it's your only option, they get the job done. This being a tv after all it gets quite loud and definitely aren't the worst set I've heard.
Pros, cons and round up:
The positives,
Picture quality
Simple design
Ease of use
All in one media function
Screen size
The negatives,
Hefty price
Uncommon port options
UI can be slow at times
Conclusion:
After about a week of use, I'm happy to say the Odyssey G8 is my favorite monitor I've ever owned.
Having one unit at the helm of my command center saves space, clutter and keeps everything in one place. Samsung has always had a place in my heart and continues to impress me.

Eye-candy for work and play!

I've been using this monitor daily for work and play over the past week. My first impression is WOW, technology has come so far and of course Samsung brings its full tech prowess to the G8 OLED. I remember back to my first LG OLED TV and how positively amazing it was vs. anything else on the market (still use it to this day). Unboxing this G8 and powering it on for the first time re-kindled those feelings of amazement. It seems simple; it's just an OLED in a wide-screen format, what's so special about that? My answer? Everything. It's all eye-candy, bright, detailed, and amazing for work/play. The physical side and weight of this is demure when compared to similarly sized screens. Kind of amazing that this type of technology can be stuffed into such a thin and light aluminum frame. That said, the lightness of it does translate to a bit of bouncing when typing, at least on my sit/stand desk. I do have my BenQ lightbar and Logitech camera atop the display, so the increased weight may be contributing to the wobble. The wobble isn't Samsung's fault, it's just my desk, but heads-up if you do use this on a non-solid foundation, you may experience some bouncing as a result of its "lightness." Hardly a complaint, but I felt it's worth pointing out.
Welcome to the future…where connectivity is a bit frustrating. There are no "traditional" connections here, meaning I can't use my full-size DisplayPort cables nor can I use my HDMI 2.1 cable...it's one mini Display Port cable (included) that works fine, but the USB-C ports are a weird choice. Makes connecting dual monitors to my Alienware 3070 Laptop a challenge. That's the cost of progress, I guess, similar to eliminating headphone jacks on phones, etc. I'm still trying to find the best cable configuration for 3 monitors, since the USB-C port presents a challenge I hadn't otherwise been faced with.
Performance is top-notch, although I will say the "gaming" settings take some time to understand. You have to go through some hoops to fully realize the 175 Hz connection to your GPU. Once I fiddled with settings and dialed things in, it's amazing. FPS are smooth as butter, blacks are jet black, whites are surprisingly white (not a dim blue/gray as with OLED TVs). Having the speakers built-in is a surprisingly useful feature. That brings me to the "is it a TV or Monitor first?"
Whites are always a challenge for OLED displays. Displaying a full-on white screen on an OLED is disappointing, but this G8 is way better than the competition. One of my attached photos is the G8 (on right) compared to my Alienware 34” LCD. The white render on the OLED panel is very close to matching the IPS - amazing job, Samsung! Also during normal use, switching between bright and dark colors doesn’t take you on a dim/bright/dim/bright ride as OLED TVs do. Brightness and dimming appear to be well handled, which is welcome functionality (especially when working with documents and normal “computer stuff” that’s not gaming).
I would say this panel is a well-thought-out hybrid of a TV and Monitor, a true hybrid, which is a welcome change as I also use it as a TV/Multimedia display. The settings/menus are a bit confusing to traverse through, but after a while you get used to the settings that make this thing amazing. It even connects to my work USB-C dock at a full 120 FPS (Lenovo laptop limitation) and is butter smooth.
I do wish there was a way to use 2 separate inputs simultaneously, i.e. dividing the screen into 1/2 work, 1/2 PC. An internal KVM or design similar to other 49" monitors, but then again the native resolution isn't a full "two 27" side by side" since it's 34". I think there is a way to do PiP with another input but to be honest I've not figured it out yet. The remote control seems to be the only way to change inputs/settings/etc, so don't lose it!
A few last thoughts. It powers on from sleep once the PC is powered on, which is a really nice feature. Other "TV first" OLED displays require a separate press on the panel power to wake up; not so with the G8 OLED. Also since it's OLED, burn-in is always a concern, however I feel very confident that Samsung designed this with the appropriate mitigations such as pixel shifting and refreshing. I have over 5,000 hours on my LG OLED TV and it's as perfect as it was on day one, so I am fully trusting Samsung here.
There is always more to say about a product like this, so hopefully my perspective helps others. It's a sizable investment that I will say is worth it, especially if you want a "do it all" solution for your office. One last point - PWM. I'm not sure if this has PWM dimming vs. DC dimming, but it's very pleasant on your eyes at lower brightness. PWM gives me a serious headache so if it's present on this panel, Samsung has done a great job minimizing it. Some OLED displays pulse and flash at lower brightness settings and I don't really notice it with this panel.
Outstanding job, Samsung. They have set the bar for what an OLED computer display/hybrid TV should be.

Amazing monitor, once you go Oled, you can't go back. And in this case, it's the newer gen QD-Oled. Came well protected in its box, and it's super thin and light. They include a remote control (great), a mini Display port cable, a huge power brick, a metal stand and also a Vesa adapter in case you want to arm/wall mount it.
First, this is a "smart" monitor, Samsung has included many smart functions you may find in their premium TVs, but they are mainly geared towards gamers. You can stream many games using Xbox and Geforce Now services if you wish, there are also tons of apps for media consumption. Setup was easy, and upon first boot, the menu was kind of sluggish, but after subsequent use it has gotten faster (I hope Samsung can improve performance on future updates). I love that the monitor is wifi enabled, so if there are any firmware updates, they come automatically via internet, no more hunting for them online and flashing from a USB drive! Once you got thru the initial setup you can start using their apps or if you wish, straight up to your PC. They include Display port 1.4, HDMI 2.1 ports, USB C with charging!. However, their video ports are of the MINI variety. I wish they were just regular sized ones. They do include the necessary Mini Display port, however no mini HDMI, this one is a con, should have been included too.
I connected my Geforce RTX 3080 using the included Mini Display port to Display port cable, went onto windows and enabled the native resolution of 3440x1440, 175hz and 10 bit (yes, 10 bit works at those HZ!, they are probably using DSC since the display port is 1.4). I also enabled G-sync (although not officially certified by Nvidia, does works). Gaming on SDR is amazing, the response time is like no other, and there is no lag and no black smearing (unlike VA panels). Colors are punchy and blacks are perfect since this is a QD-Oled self emissive panel.
Then I enabled HDR on windows. I will tell you what settings to enable if you want to have it the best way and hitting 1000 nits (although its TrueHDR 400) if you calibrate my way, it can still hit super bright highlights without clipping. To properly achieve HDR 1000 nits mode:
-Set HDR10+ GAMING to OFF
-Game HDR to OFF
-Peak brightness to HIGH.
Then (this step is crucial), download the windows HDR calibration app from the windows store and set the clipping point around 2000 nits (blacks obviously at 0) and any in-game HDR calibration should also be set to max peak 2000 nits.
This will give you the best HDR performance and you will be blown away! Colors pop and its so bright! If you don't want to have HDR enabled all the time (windows desktop), you can use the combo of keys Winkey+alt+B to enable and disable HDR anytime you want. I only enable it when I'm going to play a game that supports HDR.
Also, don't be scared of Oled burn it, I have had Oled displays for a long time and as long as you are watching varied content and not displaying the same static images you will be fine. The key is to vary your content consumption. And also, make sure care settings are enabled (on this monitor its Pixel shift, logo brightness). The display will also perform its own pixel refreshes after certain amount of hours of use. Also, one thing I recommend on windows, is don't use any desktop icons (I have moved all of mine to the taskbar), use a full black desktop background and make it so the taskbar automatically disappears and appears when you move your mouse over it. Highly recommend this monitor, once you go Oled, there is no going back!
TLDR:
PROS:
+Instant response
+Pure blacks
+175Hz
+Gsync compatible (not officialy), Freesync premium pro.
+HDR performance is amazing.
+Thin, lightweight and superb quality, all metal frame around screen.
+Game bar
+Game hub and apps
+Firmware updates over internet
+Remote control
CONS
-Mini Display port, mini HDMI, should have been regular sized ones, or at least also include a mini HDMI cable (mini display port one included).
-Huge power brick (understandable though, the monitor is so THIN!, there was no place to put it).
-Risk of burn in, if you don't take care of it (read my recommendations).

~~~The short version~~~
If you want to use the 34” QHD Samsung Odyssey G8 OLED for PC gaming with a single input source and you don’t mind dealing with a clumsy UI once in a while, this is one of the best monitors money can buy. It is beautiful and immersive and greatly improves the PC gaming experience. On the other hand, if you’re intrigued by the Odyssey G8’s added features and you’d like a monitor that can be a single source of digital entertainment, easily switching between input sources and also offering some other enjoyable multimedia entertainment and gaming features with high customizability, you’ll be disappointed.
~~~Pros~~~
• Incredible color accuracy
• Super high refresh rate
• Immersive size for single-monitor gaming
• Onboard speakers are better than expected, if not spectacular
• Can connect to bluetooth speakers/headphones and have sound routed from sources to sound devices that way
• Can connect to bluetooth input devices (keyboard/mouse/gamepad)
• Lots of app and entertainment options
• Rear lighting effects are neat, but not very noticeable
~~~Cons~~~
• Samsung OS is slow and not user-friendly
• Doesn’t automatically connect to bluetooth speaker; asks every time you turn it on
• Switching inputs takes way too many button presses
• Doesn’t remember custom input names like “Desktop”/”Laptop”. Doesn’t default to “HDMI/DisplayPort, but instead to “PC” for all PC sources, leading to confusion
• Can’t turn off super high refresh rate/motion smoothing while watching movies/tv through the connected apps
~~~The long version~~~
The Samsung Odyssey G8 34” curved OLED monitor is the best monitor I’ve ever used for PC gaming. It’s bright, color-accurate and blazing fast, with the crisp, deep blacks and immersive feeling that you would expect from a high-end QD-OLED gaming monitor. I was blown away while using it to play FPS games on my ASUS PC with a GeForce 3060.
Samsung has also done a lot to pack much more value into this package, adding a smart TV OS, bluetooth connectivity for input and output devices, and many options for customizing your experience. Unfortunately, many of these extras fall flat, and I am really not happy with how the extras affect the ability to easily use the Odyssey G8 as a multimedia computer monitor in a multi-PC setup.
As a PC gamer *and* home office worker, I have struggled to find a monitor setup that is “business in the front, party in the back,” so to speak. I have a work laptop stationed on the left side of my desk and an ASUS gaming PC stationed on the right, and I use a K/M switch to connect the same keyboard and mouse to both of them, while maintaining individual connections to the displays. Before getting this Samsung Odyssey G8, I was using a 28” 4k/60Hz ASUS TUF Gaming monitor as my main display, with an older 32” 1080p HP monitor as a secondary display. I had to manually switch between the input sources on both monitors every day so that I could go from work to play when the quitting bell rang.
Having two different-sized monitors on my desktop (three if you include the laptop screen, which I also used) became a little too much to deal with on the daily, and so I sought out a better solution. The G8 seemed like the perfect thing to replace two monitors because of its ultra wide screen. I was also very intrigued by the smart TV functions, which I figured would greatly add to my enjoyment of the monitor, basically making it a multimedia center on my desktop and allowing me to kick back and watch some TV whenever working and gaming became too interactive.
I was overjoyed to find that the Odyssey G8 can pair with bluetooth speakers. I have a nice Logitech 2.1 system that sometimes has difficulty identifying the primary source when two PCs are paired and connected, and when I have the G8 paired, it makes switching between PCs seamless. Unfortunately, the bluetooth audio is also the source of my first gripe. The G8 prompts you to choose whether you want to connect to the device **every single time you turn it on**, adding an annoying step to what should be an automatic process. Once I’ve told the G8 I want it to connect to Bluetooth audio output, it should stay that way unless I change it.
My second gripe has to do with source selection. This process is also unnecessarily cumbersome, requiring the remote control and several button clicks. I should really be able to accomplish this via a button on the remote, switching between HDMI and DisplayPort sources quickly and easily. Instead, I have to go to the Samsung home screen menu and select a source from a long horizontal menu.
The sources are auto detected when you connect a device, and for computers, they default to “PC” whether you use the HDMI or DisplayPort. The source names and their menu order are customizable, so I set them as “Laptop” and “Desktop” and moved them to first and second in line in the menu. That should make things easy, right? Wrong. Each time the device reconnects, the Samsung interface re-assigns it the default “PC” name and icon and moves the icon to the end of the menu. This is a terrible way to do things. If they at least made it default to HDMI/DisplayPort that would make it easier, but they don’t. Not cool, Samsung.
There are also problems with using the Smart OS. It runs with some jank, and pressing a button doesn’t always result in the expected behavior right away. Adding apps and logging in was fairly easy, and I was able to get Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other services working fairly quickly out of the box. I had trouble using the built-in gaming features with my Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, which paired quickly and was useful to navigate menus, but seemingly wasn’t compatible with any of the gaming services that come packaged with the OS (GeForce, Xbox, Prime gaming, etc.).
Unfortunately, the super high refresh rate that makes gaming on the Odyssey G8 such an amazing experience is a major hindrance when watching TV and movies. The OS has an expert video settings menu that supposedly includes options for toggling blur reduction and clear motion, but which can’t actually be accessed under any circumstance that I tried (and I tried hard). Instead of making these settings available, the OS gives an error message of “This function isn’t available.”
If you’re not familiar with the plague of motion smoothing (a la “Clear motion”) it’s what makes watching a TV show on Netflix look like watching someone’s handicam footage of a trip to the mall. The inability to turn it off renders the smart TV apps on the Odyssey G8 essentially useless. I desperately wish Samsung would fix this.
~~~Final thoughts~~~
Despite all the strong language I used in the long review above, I really am a fan of what the Odyssey G8 can do. It is an incredible monitor for PC gaming. At one point playing the RTX remix of Portal, I found myself giggling with pleasure at just how immersive and REAL it felt. If Samsung can take that feeling and build a user-friendly, responsive, customizable OS around it, I would sing its praises from the rooftops. For now, I am disappointed by a lot of little annoyances that add up to this not being very conducive to use as a multi-PC multimedia center.
If you’re using this as a PC gaming monitor or even with a video game console, 5 stars. If you plan to use all the other cool functions this should be able to do, 3 stars. 4 stars as an average.
I absolutely love the picture quality of this curved QD OLED gaming monitor/4K capable tv. The picture is incredible, absolute black blacks as expected from oled. The colors just totally pop whether your gaming or surfing the web. Even the built in stereo speakers sound great, which surprised me the most. I was unaware this does come with a 6' mini display port cable, as I purchased a mini or micro HDMI cable for use with this monitor.
Playing game on with this monitor look great from my gaming PC with a Intel i9 12900k and 4080 GPU. Even my PS5 looked incredible as well playing the show 22 and spiderman. I enjoy the rgb ring and all of it built in lighting effects, looks great at night bouncing off the wall. The included remote makes for easy adjustments or use of built in apps and streaming services for watching TV.
The built in 5 Ghz WiFi works great,and holds a strong signal from my Nighthawk WiFi 6E capable router two rooms away. My only complaint would be the enormous power brick that comes with this. I sued 3m tape and mounted it to the underside of my gaming desk to hide it from site.
HDR content looks great on this, as does 4k content whether streaming or using 4k uhd discs from a PS5 disc edition. I hands down love this OLED monitor and recommend it to anyone hesitant to purchase it. It's the perfect size and matches the width of my desk exactly to the mm.
To all of the fellow gamers, pros and movie lovers this Samsung Odyssey 34" OLED monitor is stunning and let me tell you, this thing is a game-changer (literally) and visual treat to your eyes
First off all the 1000R curvature of the screen is seriously immersive. It's like you're being transported right into the game world. The OLED display is just simply amazing with colors that pop and blacks that are deep and rich. The WQHD resolution ensures that everything looks crisp, detailed and clear and the 0.03ms response time means that you won't miss a single frame
But what really blew me away was the HDR400 technology. The brightness levels are insane, and the colors are incredibly accurate. It's like seeing everything in real life. The built in speakers are surprisingly good, with clear voice and crisp sound which enhances the overall experience all together, there is a intelligent mode to automatically amplify sound as per the content your are watching on monitor
The Smart Gaming functionality is a huge plus. The thing i like is being able to adjust lots of settings like brightness, contrast sharpness etc and this monitor also comes with a variety of presets that you can choose from, so you can easily find the perfect settings as per your preference and option to set up a custom profiles for your specific games is a game changer. With the FreeSync Premium Pro technology, the monitor works seamlessly with my AMD graphics card to eliminate screen tearing and stuttering and my favorite feature is the color changing core lighting which is located back side of the monitor is superb you have lot of presets too
The design and built quality of this monitor is top of the line. The Slim bezels with metal finish gives it a sleek and modern look and the adjustable stand is very sturdy and well built so you can be confident that your monitor will stay securely in place and it comes with wall mount too you need to buy 4 screws as per your wall material so that you can mount to a wall if you have a space constraints.
This monitor comes with Display, micro hdmi and latest Gen 2 two USB 3 ports which can be used for secondary display and charging too you no need to change settings anytime as soon as you connect any device to any port it will automatically detects and provides you with options
The on screen menu system is very easy to navigate to different options, so you can quickly and easily adjust settings as per your liking and this monitors acts as a Smart TV too unlike traditional monitors where you need a cpu or some streaming box, here this monitor comes with lots of pre installed apps and thousands of available in Samsung store at your fingertips so you can use it as a high end OLED TV too it acts as a voice assistant with built in microphone you can use Alexa or Bixby handsfree
Overall, I'm seriously impressed with the Samsung Odyssey 34" OLED monitor. It's a top of the line gaming monitor that delivers superior performance with stunning visuals. If you're a serious gamer looking for the best possible monitor to enhance your gaming experience, dont look anywhere this Samsung Odyssey is definitely worth considering. Trust me, your eyes and ears will thank you.
Samsung's new Odyssey OLED G8 is an impressive gaming monitor and dare I must say it's one of the best gaming monitors out there. As a gamer, you know that having the right gaming monitor can significantly enhance your gaming experience, and this is precisely what the Odyssey OLED G8 does. The colors are vibrant and the contrast is fantastic, making everything on the screen look super sharp.
But what stood out to me was the attention to detail in the design. The curves on the monitor give it a futuristic look, and the accents on the back are a nice touch. And the stand is sturdy, so you don't have to worry about it wobbling around during intense gaming sessions.
When it comes to gaming, the Odyssey OLED G8 is a real powerhouse. With a .03ms response time and 175Hz refresh rate in Game Mode, you can expect smooth gameplay without any lag or motion blur. And if you're a fan of G-Sync or FreeSync, you're in luck because this monitor is compatible with both.
There are a few downsides to the Odyssey OLED G8 that I have to mention. The Smart Tizen OS installed on the monitor can be a bit frustrating to use, especially if you're using it as your primary gaming monitor. And the lack of ClearType support from Microsoft for the entirely different pixel layout Samsung is using on this QD-OLED display as of this writing means that text can look a bit jagged and not as clear as it should be.
Did I say QD-OLED? Yup! QD-OLED is a new display technology that combines the best of both worlds – Quantum Dots and OLED. It is considered to be the next generation of display technology that offers even better image quality, color accuracy, and contrast than current OLED displays. QD-OLED technology uses Quantum Dots to emit light, which is then picked up by an OLED layer to create the final image. This unique combination allows for a wider range of colors, deeper blacks, and brighter whites, resulting in a more vibrant and lifelike image. In addition, QD-OLED displays are said to be more energy-efficient and longer-lasting than traditional OLED displays. And the best part? It even helps deter or even completely eliminate burn-in. I'll take that since my first OLED display in my home is totally screwed.
Overall, I think the Odyssey OLED G8 is a great gaming monitor. However, it is a bit expensive, so you'll want to keep that in mind before making a final decision to buy, but if you're looking for a top-of-the-line gaming experience, this monitor is absolutely worth considering.
I’ve been having such an amazing time gaming on this monitor! I love the deep and vibrant colors and the way it enhances the visual experience all at an incredibly smooth 175 hz. It has built in speakers that are better than most monitor speakers out there. It has a nice glossy finish that does a decent job at not reflecting too much light causing glares. Beautiful aesthetic without being too gamerish in my opinion. It’s definitely worth the price when it goes on sale, but DO NOT PAY FULL PRICE FOR THIS!! 1,200$ is much too steep for this monitor, but it does go down to 900$ during sales, so watch for that!
This is not my first 34” Curved Wide QHD monitor, but it is the first with 175Hz refresh rate and QD-OLED HDR 400 True Black technology. So far, I’ve been very impressed with this monitor, from its high refresh rate for gaming, to its “eye care” mode to help with eye strain while working, there is a myriad of possibilities to choose from. PC gaming on this monitor has become more enjoyable, well not only gaming but doing everyday work and watching videos as well.
There seemed to be minor flaws for an otherwise perfect product, but those were clarified by the manufacturer, and even without the manufacturer’s clarification, I’d still have given the monitor a score of 5. It has enhanced my gaming experience quite a bit, and moreover, it has become my main monitor for everyday use.
The Samsung Odyssey monitor has so many features/capabilities (it has Apps such as Netflix and YouTube, comes with Samsung TV, among several others), that only a few of them are discussed in this review.
- Pros: Wide 34”, 175Hz refresh rate, great vivid colors, QD-OLED, brightness, eye care mode, and others.
- Cons: None.
> Design <
Considering its capabilities, the monitor is slim, not heavy at all, and easy to move around. It has back light support that can be configured to make the gaming experience more enjoyable. The borders (bezels) are a little too wide for my taste. Samsung has borderless monitor versions that look cool (I have another 34” Samsung curved almost borderless, and it looks more appealing). It also comes with internal speakers which sound fine enough. The stand that comes in the package is a little eye sore. I understand that perhaps it is more functional than having those thin triangular bases/stands, in that you can place things on top of it, or tape post-it notes on it. Well, eventually I got used to seeing the big stand in front of me, that it doesn’t bother me too much anymore. An alternative is to get one of those stand/mounts that can attach to your desk/table and that occupy less space.
> Picture <
As expected for a QD-OLED HDR True Black display, it provides enough brightness to allow it to be used in very well-lit rooms or during a sunny day. It’s going to be handy in this coming summer, with the morning sun hitting almost directly my PC/Computer room, I won’t need to cover the windows anymore, and I’ll get to enjoy the outside light.
At night, with the lights on in the room, despite the colors being not as vibrant, I frequently resort to Eye Care mode when working. Nevertheless, under Eye Care mode, the image still looks great, and it allows for longer periods of time behind the computer. Now, if on top of this the Adaptive Picture option is selected, which tells the monitor to take into account the ambient light, then the result is less strain for your precious eyes. Of course, when Game Mode is On, you don’t have the option of Eye Care (and vice versa). But that is fine, you want the best experience with those graphics when playing games anyways.
When playing games in the dark (or under low light), with the monitor’s back light patterns and those from my PC, the experience is just unique. And it is here that QD-OLED True Black shines (see the pictures.)
In summary, it’s outperformed any other monitor I have at home (and even at work.)
> Refresh rate <
This monitor has a maximum refresh rate of 175Hz, with 120Hz and 60 Hz being the others it can be set to. Honestly, on most gaming scenarios, 120Hz seems to be sufficient to have a delightful experience with this monitor. Even in games which would benefit from higher rates, playing at 120HZ under G-Sync compatibility on this wide QD-OLED HDR 400 True Black is just amazing. And well, at 175Hz, although some games like forza wouldn’t reach 175fps (I guess I need to update my PC video card), the experience seems even better (one of the pictures contains a comparison between WQHD and FHD and the refresh rates reached while playing Forza.)
> G-Sync/FreeSync <
This monitor supports FreeSync, but there is no word about it being G-Sync-Compatible, and I didn’t find any claim about the latter on the Samsung website.
Since my gaming PC graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080, I decided to give G-Sync a try. First, I had to enable “Gaming Mode” for the option to configure G-Sync to be available on the NVIDIA control panel. After selecting the G-Sync option on the NVIDIA control panel, I was welcomed with this message “Selected Display is not validated as G-Sync compatible”. Well, the monitor seemed to work just fine, even running the Pendulum application test from the NVIDIA website showed G-Sync compatible mode was running smoothly. In addition, when going to the settings section on the monitor, it would show “Adaptive-Sync” being On, so it had to be G-Sync compatible.
I decided to contact Samsung, and they mentioned that the monitor would work fine most of the time under G-Sync compatibility, but if anything goes wrong, they wouldn’t be able to help the customers as the model “was not officially certified by NVIDIA”, hence no mention about G-Sync in the documentation about the product, basically “try it at your own risk”. Regardless, it seems that G-Sync just works and comes in handy; for example, when playing games like Forza.
> Black Matrix Difference <
When doing some work and some writing, not gaming, I realized that the left and right borders (bezel) on the monitor seemed to differ at different times. At some point the right border would be wider than the left and vice-versa. I asked Samsung about this, and I learnt a new thing, they call the “black area between Bezel & Display” Black Matrix. The intended use of that matrix is to prevent Burn-in, and so Pixel shift is used from time to time, so that is why one can notice “left/right bezel difference”. Neat indeed, if it means my monitor would display great colors for a long period of time, then I don’t mind having that difference (which really bothered me once I noticed it.)
> Other <
A few other observations:
- This monitor comes with features similar to those of smart TVs (albeit it is not a smart TV.) There is some number of apps that can keep you entertained. So far, I’ve only used the YouTube and Netflix apps to watch some content; although, if I have the PC on, I then use the PC to watch different online content. I don’t see myself too much using those smart features, since I’ll be using mostly connected to my gaming PC and/or laptop, although it is nice to have them.
- To appreciate the back light, the “Core lighting” option, you’d need to use the computer almost in the dark. In a very well-lit room, the colors are not too noticeable. That being said, if you have a reflective board/wall behind the monitor, then you could have some fun.
- There is a Gaming Hub specific for gamers, but I haven’t used it yet. I mostly game on the PC, I open Xbox and I am ready!
The Samsung Odyssey 34 inch Gaming Monitor is an amazing display for the serious gamer and multitasker.
I have had a lot of really cool monitors over the past 20 years. From the oversized CRT’s in the early 90’s to the Apple Cinema Display of the 2000’s and now I have what I consider to be the best PC monitor I have ever owned. The Samsung Odyssey is the perfect blend of everything you could want and need in a gaming monitor.
Initial setup took less than 5 minutes. Samsung makes it very easy to assemble and once constructed the monitor is beautiful to look at. It is surprisingly light for its size with a gray metal finish and razor thin curved screen. They’ve even added lighting behind the monitor itself that can match the displayed colors on the screen for a more immersive experience. The monitor has multiple usb c inputs, an HDMI mini 2.1 and a DisplayPort but surprisingly didn’t include a normal size HDMI port. I used the DisplayPort input for my pc with the cable that came with the monitor. Samsung didn’t include a Mini HDMi cord which I thought was a mistake because not everyone has a DisplayPort input and if you use a HDMI to usb-c cord you’re limited to how good the cable is for refresh rate. Also it seems that Mini HDMI cords are hard to find because Best Buy doesn’t even carry them. Once hooked up I turned on the monitor and was immediately greeted with more of a TV like experience than I was expecting. The monitor has apps and a Samsung game hub to go along with the PC input. Netflix, Disney+ and YouTube are all readily available. The game hub is pretty sweet as well because I was immediately able to login to my Xbox account and utilize the cloud gaming platform they have to play Xbox games. The monitor streamed them seamlessly, only hiccup I saw was the full screen wasn’t utilized for the apps.
The PC input though is the bread and butter of this monitor. Coming in at a whopping 3440x1440 this screen has some real estate. With a 175hz refresh rate and a .03ms response rate this monitor is buttery smooth. Every game I throw at it looks amazing with rich colors and true blacks that only can come from an OLED monitor. Games like Forza Horizon just look stunning and Apex legends, which can be intense on a monitor, played flawlessly. I love this monitor, when playing FPS it almost feels like the view is panoramic. The monitor also has quick gaming settings that can be adjusted depending on what type of game you’re playing by holding down the pause button on the remote. Speaking of the remote the one thing I wish they did put on it would have been a PC input button. It is slightly cumbersome to have to hit the home button then find the pc input after using an app. But that’s a small complaint and really the only flaw I’ve found besides the lack of a regular HDMI input.
Overall I am very impressed with the quality of this display. If you’re looking for a widescreen gaming monitor that also functions as a TV and a Xbox gaming hub while also being an amazing everyday monitor in terms of sheer real estate look no further. Samsung hit it out of the park with this one. It is by far the prettiest monitor I have ever owned and I look forward to using it for many years to come.
I would recommend this to a friend
