Quick Review: The Samsung HW-Q900T is a superb sounding soundbar at a good price point for nicer home theaters. It’s great for watching movies and listening to music but it has a few setup gotcha’s. Specific TV sound settings for ARC/HDMI are required for the recommended HDMI connection to work. The Amazon Alexa implementation is usable but it has a few glitches. After living with it for 3 weeks I’m happy with it and have no buyer’s remorse. It does very well with movie sounds, centering dialogue, expanding movie sounds effects, and giving a clarity to movie soundtracks that will make movies more engaging. The default Adaptive Sound setting produces an incredible sound field. You can set it to this setting and forget it. I recommend this soundbar for people dissatisfied with the flat sound of cheaper models but that cannot or don’t want to do the complex wiring setup of a 7.1 speaker system.
Longer Review: I’ve been putting up with a $250 2.1 Samsung soundbar for many years. It sounded better than TV audio but movie dialogue was hard to hear and music sounded sonically flat at every volume level. So it was time to upgrade.
I went with Samsung again because I have a Samsung TV and I wanted the soundbar to play nice with it. I also wanted a large sound field and the HW-Q900T has a wide 48.5 inch bar – one of the largest on the market. That length is part of the magic of producing a wider sound field – which is perhaps more important with music than with movies. Stereo isn’t really stereo if the speakers are right next to each other.
The other contender at this level is the HW-950T. I listened to this unit at Best Buy but it was not set up to show off the unit at its best. It is almost identical to the 900 with the main difference being the largish rear wireless speakers that come with the Q950 and a few software difference. But the unit on display had the rear speakers setup in the front – so it was impossible to tell how they would enhance surround sound as intended. There was almost no noticeable sound difference between the two units in how they were set up. The HW-Q900T can be had for $999.00 while the 950 is $1699 at a discounted price. If you have money to burn, go right ahead but at this price point you might well consider going all out on a true Atmos receiver / speaker system. The bottom line is I didn’t think the Q950 sounded enough different (actually no difference at all) to warrant the higher cost. Best Buy had a package deal on the Q900T that included a set of Samsung rear surround speakers for an additional $200, and I chose that option but I’ll review them separately.
Physical setup of the 900T is fairly simple. Place the bar under your television, plug it in, connect it to your TV, and you are good to go. It comes with wall mounting brackets if your setup requires them. Ours is placed on a mantel below the wall mounted TV and that works well. Make sure there’s clearance both to the sides and above the soundbar as there are speakers that fire to the top and side to provide some of the spatial effects. If you have a smaller TV (55 inches or smaller) or have it placed in a smaller space this soundbar might not be the best choice due to the length. It will still sound good but it might not take advantage of the sound field characteristics of the 900T, so the Q70T might be a better choice and save you some $$.
The Q900T comes with a large 12 inch subwoofer, the same unit as the 950. My old soundbar had one too but this one is larger and, well blew the old one away. It sounds great. It is wireless (Bluetooth) very simple to set up, and pairs with the soundbar automatically out of the box. Because of the physics of sound you can place it almost anywhere in the same room and it will sound great. We are hearing sound, bass, and music we didn’t know existed.
Connections: The 900T can be connected to sound sources by Bluetooth, HDMI (two inputs), HDMI eArc (one port), by optical cable, and by Wi-Fi. The recommended “best sound” is the through the bi-directional ARC HDMI port. So I connected the bar through this to my TV straight away… and I got no sound. I fussed with settings on the bar and on the TV. Nothing. I hooked the bar up with a digital optical cable (second best option), and got sound, and pretty good sound too. But I really wanted it optimized. The manual that came in the box was frankly not very useful or detailed. There was more help on-line both with the FAQ and help web pages and the PDF manual which had a lot more detail in it than the one in the box. But it took a lot of work to find it. To save you the day or two it cost me here’s the scoop: Set ALL of your TV sound settings to PCM, and turn on Anynet+, and you’ll get good quality digital audio through that ARC HDMI cable. Additionally the Anynet+ will ensure that the two devices talk to each other and play nice. Some of the Q900T options will appear in the TV setting menu when connected by ARC HDMI.
The TV will take sound from whatever source (80% of the time we stream from Samsung Smart APS – Netfllix, Google TV, Disney+ etc), and send it to the Soundbar for processing and amplification. But if your HDMI audio is set to something other than PCM (pulse code mediation) such as bitstream, the HDMI cable will not deliver sound to the soundbar, nor will it drive the optional rear speakers. Depending on your TV and the default settings, yours may work fine out of the box. Mine did not ad it took work to find a solution. The best skill to have solving tech problems is persistence (and Google).
The Q900T offers four sound modes: Standard, Surround, Game Pro, and Adaptive Sound. This is where the magic happens on the soundbar. These settings alter the digital sound processing the bar performs on audio. Standard will basically reproduce whatever sound field it’s given (DTS, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1 etc). Surround mode converts those fields in to 7.1.2 on the bar, and 9.1.2 if you have the rear speaker kit. Game Pro processes all inputs into 7.1.2 or 9.1.2 with the rear speaker kit. Game Pro is intended for use with a gaming console (Xbox) and purports to match location of action on the screen with the sound field. I’m not a gamer so, not sure if it works. Oddly, it seems to have turned on automatically for an NFL game I watched. I am not sure if this was incidental but it did sound quite good. The Adaptive Sound setting is probably where you should set your sound bar and leave it. It is the real magic of this device. It adaptively changes the sound processing based on the content of the sound. It emphasizes central channel dialogue in moves, for example making it crystal clear and much easier to hear. It works quite well with almost any sound source (music, videos, movies). Adaptive Sound sounds really, really good. And it sounds good at all volume levels. This is the heart of the engineering in this unit.
Amazon Alexa: I love the convenience and the huge music catalogue of Alexa and Amazon music. Tell Alexa to queue up a tune and (mostly) she does it. But one of the irritations of my old sound bar was having to manually switch input sources. You had to specify TV or Bluetooth. This would often confuse family members when they switched back to TV from Alexa. I was hoping the Q900T would solve this problem and seamlessly change sources. It does in fact do this. But Alexa on the Q900T is glitchy. Alexa music plays over Wi-Fi. It will stream anything that your Alexa account is set up for (including Spotify and Pandora). But Alexa on the Soundbar is slow to respond to voice commands; much slower than my Echo Dot. When playing music back, it will hiccup every so often with a slight pause. Its very loud if you forget to turn the sound down before speaking to her, and the Alexa volume cannot be set independent of other sounds from the bar. Then I had a problem the first week where the Amazon account associated with the bar simply stopped working, and there was no way to correct it with either the remote or with the SmartThings App. Alexa is set up on the Q900T using the Samsung’s Mobile Smart Things App (more on this below). But there’s no way of changing or fixing an Amazon account on the App once it’s been set. Fixing Alexa required a compete reset of the soundbar which wipes out any other settings you’ve made. But this did restore Alexa to working order. This glitch happened again right in the middle of a playless. And again it required re-initializing the Q900T. Turns out this is a software bug that happens when the Q900T updates it’s own software. Clearly the engineering team did not spend as much effort on implementing Alexa or their own Smart Things app as they did simulating Dolby Atmos in the sound field. But resseting the Q900T does not solve the music hiccup problem. I fear this will continue until Samsung improves the devices firmware with a larger memory buffer for streaming sources.
The Smart Things App is both fun to use and frustrating when you need to actually fix something that’s not working. It will do some basic EQ setting (treble, bass, Subwoofer) and will allow you to quickly change sound modes and volumes. It gives you a quick visual of how your TV / Soundbar are configured. But there are many settings that still require the remote control and awkwardly looking at the small display screen located on the top of the bar. The location of the screen has been a source of contention amongst consumer reviews, but I think the engineers made the right choice in locating up top so that it doesn’t distract while watching your TV. But it is not convenient for setup and if they had put more features into the Smart Things App the display location would not be an issue. For starters give the app the ability to change Wi-Fi and Alexa settings without having to reinitialize the bar.
Bottom line is I am very happy with how this Q900T sounds. It is acoustically well engineered. Recommended.

This thing is a beast. Crystal clear sound with a ton of speakers built in. I was thinking of buying the rear speakers but I wanted to hear it without them. My setup is in a corner with the new Samsung 80A TV and the Q Symphony feature eliminated the need for the rears. I set it to "surround" and I get perfect theater sound with my setup. The sub is sitting behind the stand in the corner and I get perfect bass tones from movies and music. It's a sound monster!!!

Was able to grab it for pretty much 500.00 out of pocket.. ( 20 percent off excellent used, crazy amount of points cashed out) but anyways, it was easy to setup, the q symphony with my q800t is great most of the time. The only complaints is three things. The material of the bar gets pet hair quick ( use piece of packing tape , hold each end and quick stick from each spot going sideways to clean easy by the way) ..... Next the screen of the bar is on top forcing me to stand up to it and then make changes...... And last the sound cuts out at certain points when changing sources like netflix but not enough to make me hate it. I'll recommend

The Samsung - HW-Q900T 7.1.2ch Soundbar with Dolby Atmos / DTS:X and Alexa Built-in (2020) - Black is amazing!! I just paired this with the Samsung Q 90 T 85 inch TV and it’s absolutely awesome, deep thunderous bass sound, it feels like it’s all around you without the rear speakers. It makes the experience so much better. When you bundle with the TV you can save an additional $300 off sale price.

I bought this HW-900T soundbar to pair with a Q90 QLED TV from Samsung. They went together without a single issue. I like the Q-Symphony feature, it uses the TV speakers at the same time, I like Alexia, I hooked up some old SWA-8500 rear speakers, just had to reset the box. Piece of cake. The soundbar is a beast, I put it under the TV because it has upward pointed speakers. Its perfect. Very nice and easy connection. I know there are complaints that the screen is on top, but if you use SmartThings, then you can adjust from your phone.

Good sound quality system but not for the price. This system is at best just a small step above other systems less than half its price. Unfortunately Samsung design is old and outdated for the times. The sound bar is larger than most due to the upward speakers but again the led screen and buttons are on the top of the bar basically rendering it 100% useless if you mount it to the wall or tv. Sure it comes with a remote but it’s like shooting in the dark to change modes or connection with the remote and unable to see the screen. Samsung should include the rear wireless speakers with this system to ease the bigger price with the same Samsung issues. If you want the top level sound options be prepared to use hdmi or optic cables. The system only performs at basic sound function if you use WiFi connection instead. I purchased a new 75 inch Samsung tv a week prior to this purchase and minus the subwoofer, the tv sound quality is equal if not a little better than the sound bar. This system would be a much better buy at half the cost than it currently cost but not near the quality for what your paying now.

Hi Danny B,
Thank you for sharing your user experience with the HW-Q900T Samsung Soundbar. Your feedback is very important to us and will be shared with our product and design team.
I am sorry to see that you are not completely happy with the sound performance. You can try manually optimizing your audio experience by pressing the SOUND CONTROL button (looks like a gear) to access the setting items such as TREBLE, BASS, SYNC, CENTER LEVEL, SIDE LEVEL, FRONT TOP LEVEL, REAR LEVEL, REAR TOP LEVEL, and VIRTUAL ON/OFF. The selected item can be adjusted using the Up/Down buttons.
– To control the volume of the treble or bass sound, select TREBLE or BASS in Sound Settings, and then adjust the volume between -6~+6 by using the Up/Down buttons.
– Press and hold the SOUND CONTROL button for about 5 seconds to adjust the sound for each frequency band. 150Hz, 300Hz, 600Hz, 1.2kHz, 2.5kHz, 5kHz, and 10kHz are selectable using the Left/Right buttons and each can be adjusted to a setting between -6 to +6 using the Up/Down buttons. (Make sure the Sound mode is set to “STANDARD”.)
– To control the volume of each speaker select CENTER LEVEL, SIDE LEVEL, or FRONT TOP LEVEL in Sound Settings, and then adjust the volume between -6~+6 by using the Up/Down buttons.
– If the video on the TV and audio from the Soundbar are not synchronized, select SYNC in Sound Control, and then set the audio delay between 0~300 milliseconds by using the Up/Down buttons.
– SYNC is only supported for some functions.
– If Surround Speakers are connected, select REAR LEVEL and then use the Up/Down buttons to adjust the volume within a -6 to +6 range.
– The VIRTUAL Speaker function can be turned ON/OFF by using the Up/Down buttons.

We recently received a Samsung HW-Q900T soundbar at a reduced price to purchase for our use and to review.
Installation was simple, straight-forward and with no issues. Instructions were very clear and direct. We installed using the HDMI-ARC method to ensure the best sound possible, but you can also use an optical cable or blue-tooth. This is connected to a Samsung Q80R series television, which utilizes 100% of this speaker’s features. Your mileage will vary depending on your television. This particular soundbar was the exact fit in width and height for the Q80R.
Now connected, I booted up the newly released and remastered version of Top Gun with both 4K video and Dolby Atmos audio. As soon as the into music started playing I was absolutely blown away. The music immersed the room with sound and soon the sounds of fighter jets were coming from all sides! The tones, including the bass were all set just right in the default mode. Very impressive! And this was only with the soundbar and sub-woofer. No rear speakers. The soundbar does support standard audio protocols along with the very popular Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. No matter the format, this soundbar has the ability to perform well.
This soundbar also supports Alexa and Bluetooth input from your devices and is equally impressive. The bass will not rattle your windows, but it is room-filling and is an excellent addition to our living-room based home theater. The soundbar also takes direct input from any HDMI device so you can even connect your Blu-ray player through the soundbar (recommended).
After two weeks of use I am still as impressed today as I was then. I have also connected my soundbar to my iPhone via Samsung’s SmartThings app and now have a very nice user interface to control the soundbar though somewhat limited to options as compared to the much more difficult to customize option of using the remote. That needs to be improved.
There are four speaker modes for the soundbar: Standard, Surround, Game and Adaptive. The soundbar defaults to adaptive and works fine in most situations. Surround is best for playing your movies and I found standard works best for standard TV programs, especially when the music tends to outplay the voices.
This soundbar has 16 different speakers with multiple channels to immerse you with 3D surround sound and with the right settings, accomplishes that quite well. It mounts on a TV stand/table-top or is wall mountable. From there you can customize how the 16 speakers disperse the sound to your personal taste.
The Q900T also supports Alexa, one-tap and a completely wireless connection via Bluetooth and more!
I highly recommend this soundbar and yes, the price is off-putting, but the performance is quite extraordinary. In my opinion this soundbar can become the audio center to a small home theater for not only watching TV and movies but also playing music.

I sold all of my high end, audiophile gear, and bought this.
Truthfully, you cannot compare the sound from a soundbar to an audiophile setup. But you also cannot compare the ease of set up, ease of use, the lack of wires running everywhere, and minimal size.
After hours of set-up (running cables, hanging speakers on walls, dialing in the sound) I only used my amp/speaker gear when watching movies, because it was a pain. Adjusting audio settings on the TV & amp, multiple remotes, redialing the sound depending on what I was watching...
With this: One cable between the TV & speaker. Turn on the TV, it detects the speaker (HDMI eARC). Wireless sub connected automatically. Done. The Adaptive Sound truly does a good job at dialing in the sound based on what you're watching. Can control everything I need (less some fine tuning bits that once set need not be adjusted) from my TV remote. Stuck the remote that came with the speaker in a drawer.
Sound is way better than I would have ever expected. Clear, loud, and very good spatial imaging. I don't really "need" them, but I am going to pick up the rears - as I am guessing, based on the soundbar itself, they too will deliver more that I would expect.
Cost? A bit pricey for a soundbar, but relative to others, worth it.

Got this soundbar to go with my samsung q80t 55 inch tv and have to say with the atmos effects i get a theater like experience. This has excellent bass reproduction and the surround effects are amazing also, it has alexa built in which is a great feature, it is a large soundbar that covers the whole length of my tv but it looks great. Setup was not too bad at all. If you can afford it i highly recommend this soundbar. You dont even need the rear speakers, gives an amazing sound even without them.

Super easy to set up. eARC works well hooked up to Sony TV. There seems to be an issue when watching TV/DVR after fast forward or reverse is used the sound does not come back on. It is interment and does not happen often. None the less annoying. The sound is great and fills the room. The sound hight (Atmos) could be louder or more apparent. The center speaker reproduces voices well and dialog is clear and not drowned out even at high volume. The base booms without rattleling. The equalizer functions ok, but sound settings can be confusing. The tv does control the sound Bar and ps4 also sounds great. I'm thinking of getting the back speakers for even more immersion. The sake price makes this a good choice for the money but when purchased i could not find reviews.

Sounds great and works great only issue I have arose today and I don’t know if it’s from the bar or a signal from the tv. This morning while the tv was off the bar kept turning on and off on its own. Only thing I dislike is no display on the front. I do get frustrated with the lip sync sometimes though. When I game it is really bad and I just turn off the soundbar all together. I can’t use the pass through hdmi because it doesn’t support 4K at 120. Also it’s more frustrating to get the tv on the right channel and then the bar on the right channel. Especially when you don’t have a front screen on the bar.

I was tired of fighting my component AV system and wanted a seamless and easy experience connecting my Samsung soundbar to my Samsung tv. For the most part I have been disappointed.
The soundbar installation instructions presume menu options that are not available on my Samsung tv. I spent hours getting sound out of it.
Then I spent hours with tech support because of a crackle on the end channels with talking heads on some cable channels. Only those channels. And only the talking heads, not the commercials. This issue is still unresolved.
The soundbar has Amazon Alexa built in, but the install did not complete correctly. I have configured dozens of echo devices and hundreds of SmartThings devices, but I failed on this one. After two more calls and more hours with (clueless on this issue) tech support
I finally figured it out myself.
Alexa YELLS. No way to control Alexa voice and notification volume. Independent of the soundbar listening level, the neighbors can hear Alexa. The neighbors across the street.
I expected the Samsung tv remote to control the soundbar volume. It will I guess, but not with the configurations available on my tv. So my spouse still has to juggle two remotes.
The soundbar itself works well, listening to Amazon content on built-in Alexa is great, and the sound is very satisfying — not up to the old component system, but good enough,
I hope user feedback and forthcoming firmware updates will address some of these issues, but I would wait a while before purchasing, and manage expectations for the user experience.

Thank you for your feedback on the Samsung Sound bar System and Samsung Customer Support. I am sincerely sorry for the issues you have encountered and understand your disappointment. Your user experience is very important to us and will be shared with our teams in an effort towards making future improvements.
As long as your soundbar is connected to your TV with either an optical cable or HDMI via ARC, you can control the volume and mute the soundbar using your Samsung TV's remote.
1) Use the TV remote to navigate to Settings, select Sound, and then select Sound Output on your Samsung TV. 2) Select your Samsung soundbar, and then select Close. Now you can use your TV remote to adjust volume and mute the soundbar. The soundbar should also turn on and off with the TV.
By default, Samsung TV remotes should be able to control Samsung soundbars. If it isn't working, be sure the soundbar is powered on, and then press and hold the WOOFER button up until "ON - TV REMOTE" appears on the display (about 5 seconds). Next, you'll need to choose between connecting with an optical cable or an HDMI cable.
You may want to try to adjust your Alexa voice and notification volume level on your Alexa app.

Great Quality Sound and Simple to Setup Soundbar

We have a Sonos soundbar in our media room that we really love. However, we wanted something a little different and were fortunate to find this Samsung as an open box item at our local Best Buy store.
It was easy to set up and with the use of HDMI from the bar to our television, we are getting great sound quality that matches up to the picture on our Sony TV. The equalizing of voice/motion and sound was a big deal to us as it is something that wireless systems (and sometimes wired) can struggle with.
I recommend using the SmartThings app to fully maximize the use of the soundbar. It's easy enough to update the firmware and set anything else up that you'd like to customize along the way.
I have it synced up via Wifi as well so that I can listen to music pretty much anywhere in the house. If I am in the kitchen (which leads into the family room) I can easily kick on some tunes and the setup of this is really great.
We keep everything in Adaptive Sound mode and it truly sounds like there are speakers all over the room. We keep the bass and treble at +2 for the best experience for us, but of course your settings will be based on individual preferences.
The craziest thing about this soundbar is how loud it can get. As I type this, I am comfortably listening to music from another room and it is at volume level 10 out of 100. I find that ~20-25 is about as loud as is needed. Even when pumped up higher for those special "I really need loud music or movie" moments, the quality remains consistent and I haven't heard any distortion because of the higher volumes/bass/treble.
Overall this has been the best sound bar we have ever had. The ability for it to utilize Dolby Atmos and other aspects are just icing on the cake. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a simple two-piece system that will bring the house down with quality sound.

THIS THING IS A MUST BUY !!! First of all this thing weighs like 50 pounds, it’s a monster. I bought the Q60T and returned it because it was defective and took home the Q850T. I returned the Q850T and took home the 900 after reading some reviews and actually testing it at the store. This thing is INSANE. After putting the subwoofer level at 6 and upping the base to 3, this thing makes my house shake and I haven’t pushed the volume past 20. The sound bar sounds BEAUTIFUL and the sound is so crisp! I have the Q70T TV so I like to listen to my music on the ‘sound wall’ and wow my music sounds so good on this thing!! Only complaint is that the display is on top for some reason so if you’re sitting on the couch or laying in bed you can’t see it. It was in the front on the Q60 and Q850. That’s definitely not a deal breaker tho.
