A good intro to home automation

The SmartThings hub will let you integrate a large number of home automation products...BUT be aware that the "plug & play" products are still somewhat limited and that the majority of the stuff that you may want to use (locks, switches, garage door openers, cameras, etc) will require at least a little effort to get attached to the hub. You'll need to learn how to create the smartapps, controllers and routines that make everything communicate and work. Sometimes, this is as easy as a Google search and copying and pasting some commands from the many helpful user sites/groups. Occasionally though, it could take a LOT of searching and trial & error to get things connected. This is especially true if you stray outside the "Samsung-approved" devices (that are often much cheaper than the Samsung stuff). All in all, the hub is easy-enough to use and fun/useful enough to justify the expense and hassle.

The best possible smart home choice out there is the Smartthings device, period. Yes, there are many others. Problem is that it isn't as easy as it should be (can be) and many features of the interface are not matching. A choice in one place may not be in another, etc. I back up my 'best' comment though because of the number of devices, the ease of setup, and the fact that just about everything can work with it. Things are made to work with Smartthings for a reason. It is simply the strongest existing platform. Nest has arbitrary limitations, and only a few devices, and parts of Nest are even compatible. The only platform not compatible is Apple, and they are never compatible with anyone else anyway.

This is extremely easy to set up. Much much easier than Iris. So I deleted the Iris app and use this to control the smart plugs and motion sensor I got from Lowes. It also controls the smart GEvToggle Switches. And after setting the scene and routines, I control the scenes from Google Home. The routines are automated. I got these for $50. Not sure if I'd spend $100 for it.

I have been very impressed with the Samsung SmartThings Hub. It has been very easy to enroll new devices and the app is very user-friendly as well. I am just getting started with adding SmartThings to the house but hope to have at least 30 devices within the next few weeks. I have also hooked up Alexa voice control to it very seamlessly. Everything seems to work great!

I had an Iris Hub, but wanted something with more functionality and flexibility so I switched to smartthings. It works great and I was able to pair almost all of my devices without issue. I did discover though that the Zigbee range on this hub is not as strong as my iris hub so I will need to add a device that acts as a repeater. Other than that, everything was great.

Smartthings is really the hot ticket. I have bulbs set up, thermostat connected, moisture sensor and front door locks on two homes connected. Easy to set up, quick to check or change on the iphone. LOTS of other options available on this thing.

The Hub is fine but the IOT may not be as hyped

The hub is easy to set up and connects to devices except when it does not. A major issue is that switches and plugs may not connect to the hub as stably as desired because they are inherently shielded if they are within wall receptacles, even if they are near the hub. In wall switches and plugs are very sensitive to how they are wired so if the wiring in your conduit is not standard, as is often the case, you may need an electrician. As such I call it the Internet of things that often do not work as they should. It is a work in progress. Simple things can be very useful for safety issues, like having a light turn on at a specific time or turn on remotely, but there are devices for that which do not require a hub--in wall switches and plugs are best managed with a hub.

Hands down the best Smart Home Hub

A great looking hub thats a pivotal piece of equipment to build a smart home eco system. What I really liked about this is how simple it is to setup and start things going right away. Yet, with the community and all the resources available to help you to configure advanced stuff is quiet fascinating to witness and participate. Awesome!

I have been using home automation since 2011 and this is definitely leaps and bounds from my old HA. There is a learning curve definitely, but once you use it more you will navigate / program easily. I also used tech support and they were very patient and helpful. The unit is very scalable, it communicates with various HA platforms.

Bought this Hub and two Smarthings water sensors. Set-up was effortless and quick. Placed the sensors in areas where water leaks could most likely occur. ( laundry room- under toilet tank). Tested performance by placing them in very minimal moisture. As long as the wifi is up and the batteries in the sensors are charged- I'm fairly confident I'll know if there is a serious water leak in my home. I suppose it is ideal to add a main water shutoff valve for added assurance. In the past I had a hot water tank failure that flooded my home. I was insured- but the additional cost and destruction was devastating. Many additional devices available to expand the system. This Smartthings product is inexpensive and seemingly a "Smart" way to go.

    SmartThings Hub - FANTASTIC!

The Hub was very easy to set up, just followed the instructions to have it up and running in no time. Syncing the smart "things" in our home was a bit more tricky because they had previously been registered with the ADT Pulse system...consequently I discovered that I had to "UN"register them with SmartThings before I could register them into the Hub. Once I figured that out, everything went super smoothly. We've been using the Hub for a month or so now. It has worked flawlessly. We can control our smart things with the touch of a button on our phones or by asking Alexa (integrated with the SmartThings Hub) to do whatever we want activated. Again, everything has worked flawlessly. I highly recommend this product.

    It does the job

It does the job, but don't expect it to be the cure all prime time solution. It has limitations, such as some processing of events and triggers requiring an active internet connection. One little outage at the right time and the events/triggers won't occur. Other than that, it serves its purpose. It is nice to have Zwave and Zigbee functionality all in one device. There's a fairly active community developing device handlers (DH) that accommodate mostly anything you can find in the home automation market nowadays to communicate and work your devices. Be aware that if your device requires a custom DH, it will require the above stated internet connection at that exact moment you want to use it for it to work. The generic ones can be processed locally on the device, anything else has to be sent to the cloud, interpreted and sent back to the device. Be prepared to try a few different DH's on your brand new or unusual devices, the ST community is pretty helpful. Just don't expect this thing to work perfectly all the time, right out of the box. You will need to fiddle a bit.

Bought to unify and control all of my smart devices under one control app. Hub does an awesome and detection is nearly instant and flawless however there is a learning curve with some of the more advanced automatons you may want to create or run, The basics are a cakewalk but beyond that gets a little tricky

Works great with Leviton switches to program porch, garage and inside light light schedules. This hub works way better than the Wink hub (Wink hub is useless). My suggestion for this hub is the manufacturer needs to include support for more devices especially Nest thermostats and Nest Protect smoke/CO detectors. So far so good!

I bought this a separate item, along with a couple of light bulbs. It works flawlessly. Setup was extremely simple and the smartphone software is great and easy to configure. I have this paired with a HUE bridge for some HUE lightbulbs. And the Samsung hub paired easily with my Amazon Alexa.

Bought this for some simple automation tasks around the house. After adding Google home and visiting the numerous support articles on their online community, I know have a new hobby. Fairly simple to use at a basic level, but the support communities enable power users to get their geek on.
