Got these to set up a security system for my retired parents to keep an eye on their house while they travel. Been using them for about a month and have no complaints. There have been no false triggers. They are very reliable and I get instant alerts if one is triggered. As a bonus, I didn't know they also have built in temperature sensors, so they also report the temperature, which is a nice bonus when you are monitoring your home from abroad. Was somewhat concerned about them using button cell batteries, and one sensor dropped from 100% batter to 90% in the first two days. However, in the month since then, the battery level has remained constant. Setup was extremely easy.

SmartThings Motion Sensor vs Hue Motion Sensor

I started my Smart Home with a Phillips Hue hub and two Hue bulbs. I then purchased the Hue Motion Sensor to turn on one of the bulbs when someone entered the room. I really like the design and features of the Hue sensor with its magnetic mount and light sensor. When I wanted to add a Zigbee switch to the system I discovered that the Hue hub only talks to Hue devices. I then purchased a SmartThings hub which will control the Zigbee switch and the Hue hub. The next problem I encountered was the SmartThings hub can only control the Hue bulbs through the Hue hub. It can't access the Hue motion sensor. I decided to see what the SmartThings motion sensor could do. It doesn't have the light sensor that the Hue sensor has, but the SmartThings sensor can report the temperature of the room it is in as well as the status of the battery. I was able to get around the lack of a light sensor by programming the motion sensor SmartApp that turns on a light to only respond to motion one hour before sunset and stop responding one hour after sunrise. I also programmed a SmartApp to notify me when the temperature in the room drops below 58 degrees. I have had trouble with the pilot light going out on my furnace. The mounting plate for the SmartThings motion sensor can be screwed to the wall or mounted with sticky pads. I mounted my sensor in the corner of the room by using a small 3M Command damage-free hook and some wire that I ran through the holes in the mounting plate. This method made it easier to aim the sensor in the direction I wanted. One other difference between the Hue sensor and the SmartThings sensor is the time that passes before the programmed light is activated. The response time of the Hue sensor is about one second where the SmartThings motion sensor is about two.

Works well for my purposes to monitor motion in my living room. It doesn't have a great range and seems to be between 8 and 10 feet. Battery after a week has already hit 90%. There does seem to be a few minute cooling period between motion detection. Might get the GE ZWave Motion sensor next because of the greater range and battery life.

Easy to install and activate, very reliable, works seamlessly with the Smart Things hub. The sensors are tiny and unobtrusive. We use them in conjunction with a set of Arlo wireless cameras. The only unknown is how long the CR2477 batteries will last. I would have preferred rechargeable batteries of a more common type like CR2..

Great for triggering lights to turn on with motion throughout the house and also turn off after a set time of no motion. Very easy to pair with my SmartThings hub and configure to control Hue, Wemo switches, Lifx and other lights based of different scenarios. Very nice to walk into a dark bathroom, hallway, or laundry room and have the lights automatically turn on without having to fumble for the light switch.

The sensor was easy to add to the network and works with my smart lights, but it's range was disappointing and it has lost its connection a couple times already this week. I tried putting in on the ceiling in the laundry room that connects my garage to my kitchen and it will only detect motion when I'm directly under the sensor. I was hoping it would pick up movement from either door to the laundry room but that hasn't been the case so far. I've tried moving it to a couple different spots and will have to keep trying to hopefully find the sweet spot. The ceilings are 8', and the room is 10'x5' for reference. My thought now is that if I want this to work the way I envisioned I'll need to buy another sensor.

I bought a Smart Things hub with these motion sensors. Works as expected. Have an occasional issue with the motion sensors going off line, but if I reboot the sensor (battery in and out), they reconnect.

Sync with Smarthings hub easily and setting it up as a trigger for lights. Shows temperature and activities in Smarthings apps reliably. There are couple of problem. It disconnect couple of time without reason. I have to remove the battery to reset it, but since then I have not encounter disconnection for several weeks now, but not too optimistic about this issue going away permanently. I have other brand of motion sensors and they never disconnected. The sensor range is also quite short, narrow and it is not as sensitive as other brands.

Great ZigBee motion sensor and temp monitor

The Smartthings Motion sensor is great if you have a strong ZigBee network and want to add motion sensing and a temperature monitoring to a room in your SmartHome. The only thing this sensor lacks is an ambient light sensor, which would make it an ideal solution for automating lights. Other motion sensor models do offer this feature, but they are more expensive. It is reasonably compact, but is designed for flat mounting on a wall, not in a corner where it would more completely cover a room.

It was an easy installation are there have been no glitches and I bought the hub and the multipurpose sensors and the motion sensor and now after setting it up on my phone I can monitor my house from far away. It’s a great tool for anyone looking to protect their property without paying monthly fees. However you can still add a monthly fee of $20 If you want them to monitor your property for you while you’re away. There’s a great amount to use the best apps inside the app that helps you fine-tune your hub. I choose this over simply safe and other similar devices due to the fact that Samsung is behind these products.

This sensor has worked as needed for several months now. I added this to my current smart home setup and it has been working without any issues until the battery died. The battery gave out a little sooner than expected but not a huge issue till I realized that it uses a different battery type than the original model. A little annoying but all in all it works as it should.

I use 3 motion sensors for various purposes, and most of the time it is to turn on lights when I enter the room at a certain time of the evening. It works every time, so I gave it 5 stars. I of course have the Smartthings hub, along with some connected lights allowing me to automate some lights. I also did not know this thing has a temperature sensor in it - so bonus points for that. There are some negatives if you want to call it that - he sensor is very sensitive. It picked up my boys playing from the living room and kept turning the light on. I had to disable that feature. But being overly sensitive isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Purchased this to add to our Smartthings Hub. Still working with the range, but the size and color make it easy to hide. To cover entry into a room or hallway the sensor works great. I'm still figuring out the range of coverage so my dog doesn't keep triggering it.

The only reason I don’t give this 5 stars is because it is not recommended for outdoor use which would have been awesome. Otherwise this little device does exactly what was intended plus updates the room temperature with each degree change.

I got these cheap during deal of the day. Works great with SmartThings. I have heard they drain battery really fast, haven't seen the issue yet. I also have these as outdoor sensor, so the added bonus of temperature sensor comes handy.

I have a couple of other motion detectors that have been working for years that I have mounted outside in a covered area that work fine. I wanted one to put one at the bottom of my steps by the kitchen. When someone goes down to the kitchen at night I wanted the kitchen light to turn on at a dim level. I wanted a small device that could sit on the desk at the bottom of the steps that did not look bad and this is exactly what I wanted. It picks up the motion and turns on the light before I enter the room and when I go back upstairs the light turns off five minutes later. No more feeling for the light switch next tot the disposal switch in the dark, I have turned that disposal many times feeling for the light switch. I could tell Alexa to turn on the light but that would disturb other people that are sleeping. This is what home automation is all about.

This generation of the Smartthings motion sensor has done a good job in fixing the false alerts that the previous generation was giving. There is still about the same amount of delay as the previous model though.
