The Seagate external drive is compact with a low profile design. It is virtually silent to the point that I usually double check to make sure it's powered on. Plugged into a USB 3 port in my desktop I noticed file transfer rates of up to 39 megabytes per second. I also tried it in a USB 2 port and the transfer speeds were only up to 8 megabytes per second even though USB 2 is rated at higher transfer speeds. It must be the way it read/writes to the older port. If you don't have a USB 3 port on your computer you're not going to be happy with this drive. While plugged into the USB 3 port I was able to copy 90 plus gigabytes very quickly. I received no read or write errors during the entire process and completely satisfied with the overall performance.

Although I haven't had this product in operation very long, It seems to be working very well, and backing up my info without a hiccup. I had a 1TB backup before, and this 4TB Storage/Hub is so much better and allows me greater storage of my large files and documents. I hope this product lasts as problem-free as my previous backup device did. Only time will tell, but I'm pretty confident that it will.

I purchased what appears to be the earlier version that does not have the nice USB ports on the front. These were being sold for $69 and are sold out. The only difference appears to be the lack of the USB on the front. I did some speed tests on my 2017 MacBook Pro 15" i7 TouchBar. Using a USB-C to USB-3 converter, I tested using BlackMagic on the Mac. The results were quite surprising. I tested all formats that I could produce from Mac OS Journaled to MSDOS and ExFAT, including the new AFS format. Posted are the screen snapshots of the AFS and the ExFAT tests. You will be surprised. One was "I'm not sure if I believe it" fast. I would presume that the same drive mechanism that I have is in this Seagate unit but I have not verified. If it is, expect a nice drive.

Easy to set up on my Mac-just plug n play. As I'm digitizing thousands of photos I needed a back up as well as backing up my Mac with Time Machine and this has worked flawlessly. They have excellent instructions as to how to reformat the drive if you need to do that. The true test will be how the drive will hold up for several years. One of my 2 LaCie back up drives bought several years ago stopped working after 2 years.

Probably the simplest hardware installation I've ever done. Essentially self-installs to your Mac, and Time Machine backup setup is super quick. Great storage capacity for the money, in a relatively small and sleek footprint. The extra USB ports will come in handy as well.

I was looking for an alternative for a back-up for my iMac that would not break the bank. This hard drive was the answer and it does a very good job working flawlessly. Directions were not clear regarding the downloaded control panel and I had to call customer support to find out the control panel does not work with Time Machine. Customer service was very good.

Finally Seagate has come out with an external drive that has a hub in it. You can finally daisy chain drives without going all the way back to a hub or the back of your computer. Sure helps with the cable mess behind one's desk! Now let's hope they're looking into making them wireless! I have stayed away from drives bigger than 2Tb for the simple fact that if it dies, you're out one HUGE amount of data... but the technology has improved, so I'm more at ease with the bigger capacities! The ONLY thing I might suggest to Seagate would be to at least ventilate the cases better, or put some sort of fan in or on them. On this 4Tb drive, there are only a few holes on the bottom, but heat rises, so wouldn't the top be a better place for holes?? Personally, I strap an external fan to the outside with rubber bands so it doesn't ever shut down because of a thermal overload. Sure it looks clunky, but it works, and it doesn't void the warranty like drilling the holes into the case or opening it up to the atmosphere!

My laptop is built for speed and portability. This means that it has a SSD. This is great for performance and energy efficiency, but I do a lot of video and graphics work which means that I need a ton of storage capacity for my projects. This external drive is perfect for my needs. Large capacity, very quick, and affordable. And if your laptop is starved for ports, the extra USB 3.0 ports on the device are a huge benefit. Don't hesitate to buy.

Very easy to connect to my iMac. Works perfectly with Time Machine. I like having the two extra USB ports.

I had to look around for this drive when I was shopping for it, as it wasn't in the same place as other external hard drives and I'm glad I did. The USB 3.0 2 port hub built into the drive is super handy when you don't have that many ports on your computer. It's fast and 4 TB is enough room for now.

I have been using an old harddrive that was usb powered, but found this bad boy around the same price and with a nice 3TBs of storage! I like that it is seperately powered which makes it a more powerful harddrive. I use this to edit segments for my boss so the footage takes a lot of space, but that's why I have 3TBs! Definitely will buy another for archiving and later edits.

I bought this drive to use with my iMac for time machine backups. it was quick and easy to setup for mac use. Formatted for time machine and started backing up. So far it has been fast and quiet, with no problems.

Nice compact size. Works great, east setup and backup. Would buy again. The two additional USB port are a nice plus.

External storage capacity has grown considerably over the past few years and the price for this 4 TB USB 3.0 drive was great. I suspect the internal drive is only a 5,400 rpm drive, which limits speed for data transfers, but if I wanted fast, I should have looked at an SSD. The size of the drive is more pertinent than the speed. Overall, I have been very happy with this drive.

Very simple to set up. Very quiet. Takes very little space

Fast as a rabbit, quiet as the moon with space aplenty. Best used for data storage alone since files are always readily available and can be read with ease.

I bought this drive because my old (using the term loosely, it was only 14 months old) Western Digital external hard drive started clicking and needed to have disk repair run on it almost daily. In the last few years it seemed that WD wasn't the bulletproof hard drive they used to be, so I decided to gamble on Seagate (in the past I have had problems with Seagate drives). Setup is very easy, it was picked up right away by my Mac. Since I only have USB 2.0 in the iMac I was using this on but both my old WD drive and this drive have USB 3.0, I was able to connect the old drive to the hub USB ports on the front of the unit and copy my data drive to drive at USB 3.0 speeds. There is really nothing more I can say, it just works, it's fast, it's quiet and my data is there.
