Customers frequently mention the exceptional sound quality and comfort of these headphones, with many praising their affordability. While some users find the cord too long, others wish for more bass.

I have been a Sennheiser fan for a long time, since the 1990's. As always, Sennheiser headphones produce quality sound, and the quality improves as the price goes up. That is why I was surprised by the outstanding audio from these cans with a sub-$200.00 price.
The cans are comfortable for extended listening, and the music is rich and full. The lows are also really full, and do well with my setup until the volume gets high, then they struggle. Having read many reviews on this model, I believe the low-end issue is with my setup and not the headphones. I am plugging the headphones into the headphone jack on my Logitech computer speakers. Obviously less that optimum.
I am currently researching a good headphone amp to help with the low impedances reaches with the low frequencies. That aside, even without an external headphone amp and my current system, I would buy these headphones again.

I own a pair of Audio-Technica M50s (which are both better than the Sennheisers, and more expensive, along with being closed back so I use them for different purposes) and I still find myself wearing these more often. They are VERY COMFY allowing hours of use. They also provide amazing soundstage which if you've never heard open-backed headphones you will be blown away. It sound like you're right there.
These are also relatively cheap for how good the quality is, I got them on sale too. They are very good headphones, entry level audiophile is what I would say (true audiophile is $350+ range, yikes!)
My only complaint is the cord is like 6 feet which can be annoying and helpful at certain times. The only other thing is the 1/4in to 3.5mm adaptor seems finicky, sometimes I have to turn it around to get sound in both ears, but it has never been a big problem.
All in all probably 9.5/10, would recommend to a friend and buy again if needed.

Went in wanting these but had to order them since bestbuy no longer holds these unless they have a magnolia center. Anyways, audiophile quality are unlike any other. Other brands arent that great as it is (beats, bose, soul, skullcandy, etc). Downside? Youll need 320kbps files at the least but i use flac or alac.

Songs like Black Hole Sun, Don't Know Why, The Look Of Love all sound great with these. The detail you get from these, I heard instruments from Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful Life that I've never heard before. These aren't bass head headphones (thank god) but you get nice smooth bass; especially from electro pop songs like Do You Think You're Better Off Alone. Enjoy the crisp voice of Karen Carpenter, Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries and Christina Perri. You think you died and gone to heaven. If you like to listen to movie scores/classical, look no further, these are the ones for you.
I'm not using these with a headphone amp or dac (you don't need to either). I do most of my listening on youtube from my macbook pro w/ retina.
Just go do yourself a favor and buy these headphones.
ps Best Buy price matched these headphones with Amazon so I only had to pay around 105. Thank you Best Buy.

I have had Sennheiser headphones in the past and have always been pleased with their quality....and these did not disappoint! Very well built, very good sound quality and very comfortable. Price was very reasonable, since I got it on sale. If I had to make a complaint, it would just be that the cord is too long and had to use supplied adapter for smaller plug. Since the cord is easily unplugged and replaced, I purchased a smaller cord with smaller jack.

These are about the most comfortable headphones I've ever owned. They're BIG and leave plenty of room around the ears. The foam keeps your head from getting too warm, but it still happens if you're wearing them for hours at a time.
These are open back so they let in (and to some degree out) noise, which is good if you need to be able to hear yourself being called for dinner. NOT a good idea for airplane rides, but they produce plenty of volume so its not like you're going to hear most stuff going on around you.
Sound is great. Feels very open and clear. I'd say its pretty neutral, not real heavy in any particular spectrum, but I've mostly used them for gaming and not music listening.

I had been looking at these for some time, then I saw them for under $100 on sale and pounced. What a fantastic pair of headphones, the quality of sound is wonderful. Yes they are made of plastic, but if you look after them they will probably give you many years of great listening, they also have a 2 year warranty. They are very comfortable and fit my quite large head well. No complaints, very satisfied.

I had been thinking about getting new headphones for a while, and Best Buy had these (HD 588) and several others available in their listening area. They were the best sounding out of all that I tried that were under $200. They were on sale at the time, and I bought the last one they had. On the box, it reads "Outstanding bass and vocal projection." Absolutely true. In fact, they can produce so much bass that I need to turn the bass control to about the 10 o'clock position for some recordings. You can't get sizzling highs with these 'phones, but highs are balanced in the mix as they should be. I mainly use them with my old stereo system that has knobs for bass and treble. They have a gold-plated 1/4" plug, and come with an adapter for a portable music player. They're lightweight for full-sized 'phones, and comfortable, too. I'm glad I bought them.

I had a favorite pair of headphones that finally needed to be retired. Like a comfortable recliner difficult to replace, none of my research seemed to help. After more than a dozen auditions of various brands and models, I finally heard the Sennheiser HD588 and WOW!
Comfortable, and a great fit, since I have a large head, and the sound was perfect! Tight, solid base but not overbearing. Mid-range vocals crystal clear, and great - not fatiguing highs. Strong, tight, sound. I couldn't be happier. Highly recommended!

I was looking for a new pair of headphones to game with. I had read alot of positive reviews about these and saw that amazon had a really good sale on them. Between Best buys price match guarantee and using my points i walked away only paying 60$ for these. As far as sound goes they have great sound especially when it comes to listening to music. The one thing i really like is they are not Bass heavy so you get a really nice crisp sound and it inst muffled by a lot of bass. Comfort they get a 10/10 i can literally wear these all day and my ears would feel fine they fit and feel great.

I love good sound. These were on a killer deal at about $80 for a daily deal on the app that I picked up on a whim a few days ago. I cannot stress how great these sound. On the box they are marked as the HD 558, which I have heard around town are some excellent cans at a great price, and I can now say that I believe the hype. I have been listening to many genres of music in my library and I am now able to pick out all of these subtleties in the music that I have never been able to hear before. The range of these are quite impressive, especially for anything you put on or in your ears that are under $200, let alone $100! The bass seems to be a reoccurring question that people are having about this set of headphones, and I can say that I am not a bass head, so I can't make a recommendation based on that mindset. I can confidently say as a person who loves electronic and hip hop music with lots of bass for extra goosebumps that this has pleasant bass response that doesn't hurt your ears or distort the sound at all. It's perfect for me in terms of the bass. I have only had these in my possession for under 12 hours now and I'm already super excited to break these in over time and hear the sound stage mature over time. These are OPEN BACK headphones, meaning that there is going to be more sound leaking out of the headphones than a normal set of buds or closed back headphones. This means that you will have a more expansive sound stage (with obvious sound leakage to others around you) that doesn't feel like it's being forced into your ear canals. This also means that the sound is more natural. I have had a set of the legendary Audio Technica ATH-M50s for several years as my primary set of cans for causal music listening and monitor headphones for my musical instruments and I can say with great certainty that these Sennheisers have a music more pleasant and immersive sound stage. Just the feel alone of the Sennheiser's plush velour ear cups going over your ears is an experience in itself. For gaming, it's also amazing! It gives a greater effect of "surround sound" when you're playing a FPS and helps to immerse you even more in the game and give you a better sense of character and audio placement in the world. I wore these on my head for several hours last night and this morning while trying them out and not once have I consciously felt them being on my head unless I thought about it. With the Audio Technicas, I would feel a definite level of ear and head fatigue after about an hour of having them on. As the Sennheisers break in even more, I feel like this will be much less of a concern, as they are lightweight, have great cushioning on the top of the head and the ear cups are great quality. If you're a fan of music or just want a great pair of cans for your use, I cannot recommend this product enough. It'll make you look at any other set of headphones under $200 with a critical mindset. Especially at $80, I'm feeling like these are the best and most practical deal that I have ever run across!

Purchased for my college age son. He loves the fit over the ears vs on the ears, saying they are extremely comfortable. The sound quality is quite clear and very enjoyable to listen to. Not wanting to spend hundreds like other brands, I was very pleased with the sound/quality of these in the price point! Now my husband wants a pair of his own too!

These headphones have a great range and depth of sound. I prefer over the ear headphones to any other kind, and these sound much better than most other brands you would recognize by name. Those cost twice as much to get the same sound out of them. Sennheiser is an audio company that produces professional sound equipment, not just headphones, and it shows. The cord is long and comes with a 1/4 inch jack and 1/8 inch adapter. No frills like bluetooth or noise cancellation. They will last for years with unbeatable sound for the price.

Found these on sale ($65 off) and am glad I bought them. I use these a lot connected to a Sony receiver which in turn is connected to a directv receiver. Can tell the difference from my old headphones. Also sounds crisp connected to my mac mini audio out.. Comfortable even after hours of use. Very pleased.!

Nice Entry-Level Audiophile Cans

I'm certainly not an expert at headphones but I do consider myself quite knowledgable about audiophile quality sound. The Sennheiser HD-558 is a very high quality set of phones considering the blow-out price at which I purchased them on a BB Deal of the Day. As an incentive, they also included a 6-month free trial membership in TIDAL the hi-rez music streaming service. Can't beat that deal with a stick!
As to the headphones themselves, they have a very pleasant and forgiving sound signature especially if you listen to acoustic (i.e., classical, jazz, folk) genres. While not as detailed as Sennheiser's upper echelon models, the 558's are great for hours-on-end listening sessions. I would also recommend the use of a dedicated headphone amp / DAC to further elevate their sound potential if that is within your budget. All in all, these are a great buy and might even be considered a "gateway drug" to the world of true audiophile level headphone sound.

I needed a new headset as my previous one I had for years had always hurt over time. Felt like my head was getting crushed along with my ears. Ordered these and WOW! I can wear them all day. I've easily worn them up to 8-16 hours and it still feels like nothing is crushing my head, my ears or just feeling uncomfortable. Doesn't get too hot which is nice as well. Sound is also good too! It's definitely on the less bass side, which I prefer for gaming competitively, so I can hear footprints and enemy firing, etc. Which it does do decently at, whilst being comfortable. They're also very sturdy! The amount of times I pulled the cord or dropped them on concrete floor as been too many times, yet they work as new!

Bought these while on sale and used $20 awards for these. I was looking for headphones for ~$100, got these for $99 (MSRP 189) and couldn't be happier. In fact my wife likes them so much that had to buy her a set (ended up costing me more because were not at the lower price and no award points available. If spending $100 need to get these. I would of given these a 4 star becasue the cord is way to long, but the cord unplugs from the headset and a shorter cord can be ordered.

I use 3 different headphones on a regular basis. This is my most used pair, and I use it almost daily on my computer.
The good:
1) Phenomenal sound. Really, the sound quality of these headphones is top notch. I'm sure you can pay hundreds more for some moderately better sound, but for the price, these headphones cannot be beaten. They do a more than adequate job of presenting you the music as it was intended to be heard. It's great for listening to literally any type of music.
2) Comfort - these are, by far, the most comfortable headphones I have ever used. I wear glasses, and use headphones sometimes hours on end (for class) and these are easily the most comfortable headphones I own.
The bad:
1) The biggest negative is that this is "just" a pair of headphones. They do not have a microphone, so they are not something I use with my phone at all.
2) The cord that comes with these headphones is ridiculously long and comes with a (I believe) 6.35 mm jack, which doesn't fit most modern devices. The jack does come with a 3.5 mm connector piece which works, but it looks pretty funky.
3) There is some audio leakage. What that means is that if I were to wear these headphones in a noisy area they would not cancel out much of the noise, and other people would probably be able to hear what I'm listening to. For me, that's not a big deal because I use these exclusively on my computer - but that might be a deal breaker for some people.
So, what I did was I purchased another audio cord which is shorter & does not require an additional piece to fit a 3.5mm jack (this is not hard to find or very expensive) and the problems with the cord length & size are mitigated.
I really love these headphones - the amazing sound and comfort really trumps all else for me. If you have to have a microphone, or if you don't want to spend a few more dollars for another cord, you should look elsewhere, but otherwise I cannot recommend these headphones highly enough.

Hands down the best pair of headphones I have used. I upgraded my older HD 203s with these, and WOW what a change. I like these over my v-moda lp2, and my klipsch mode. The sound is rich and full, there is just enough low end, and everything is clean and clear. I have worn these for several hours on end from gaming to music and even plugging into an amp to play my bass. Only downside is the stock cord has to use an adapter to plug into 3.5mm jacks (which is supplied). You can buy a shorter cord from Sennheiser direct for under 20.
