"I grew up in the 70's and 80's...This character had a short show...but sure was very most fond of Shazam through the comic magazines, I can't say enough of how much the reintroduction is absolutely a stunner and VERY MOST FUN for the entire family to enjoy!...I sure am looking forward to a sequel AND, the 3D version for home is an absolute MUST...

The movie is good, but the package came with a digital code that was already expired and wasn't able to be redeemed. This was a new copy as well so this could be an issue with other new copies. Keep that in mind if you decide to purchase this movie. Get it on sale for $15 or less if you can.

DC keeping the fun formula of it's previous movie releases, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and even Justice League (it gets a pass because of all the production problems, but was still fun!!!) Henry Cavill is staying after all... maybe the DCU isn't dead in the water as they originally thought!!! :)
Enjoy!!!

Shazam brings the charm of being young with the desire to become a superhero in a very heartfelt way. The characters are all relatable and have a great sense of humor to them ! The steelbook design is simple but it does it’s job. Definitely a must buy for the kiddos.

This movie reminds me of Superhero movies from a time when I was younger. Lots of heart and laughs. Touches of the Tom Hanks Big with the feel good of seeing that family and friends aren’t always found in the traditional places.

Bought for the 3D. not the greatest - no 16:9 zooms so very disappointing but otherwise ok. Great movie though as DC finally outdoes all the Marvel junk out there.

Shazam! is an interesting movie in that it is a GREAT superhero movie in that it plays SOME of its strengths to the nines and then downplays other aspects of the source material in bafflingly strange ways. It is also at its worst when it is simply being a standard superhero slug fest (which are awesome, but this movie showed potential for much more). So...it's an interesting juxtaposition of different pieces that don't always fit together well but - when they do - this movie soars.
First, the name...ugh. Legal matters about IP issues aside, calling our hero Shazam doesn't work. The name (acronym) belongs to the wizard, always has. And it does here. So...why is Shazam also now the hero? The movie just presents it and doesn't deal with it and that's ok. It is what it is, but it would be better if he was "Captain Marvel" especially since we get the REST of the marvel family by name...lol. Hey it's Shazam and Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr. and...yeah...ok.
But, that's a minor point. A MAJOR point is that the film is at its best when it is the journey of a young boy coming of age and dealing with the trauma of his youth. Seriously, I know that sounds pretentious and disney-ish but the film is amazing when that happens (Whether it happens when Billy or ahem Shazam is on screen). But then the movie pulls back and says "nope. I'm a superhero movie...slugfest time!"
The most egregious pacing sacrifice this dichotomy makes is when Billy (spoiler alert) finds his mother and she rejects him. She wants nothing to do with him and he's spent his entire life trying to find her. What a heartbreaking, awful moment...and it's never really referenced again because he has to run off to fight bad guys. Yea, we want cool superhero action but this was the beating heart of the film and this moment was it...it was a really jarring transition as Billy "sucks it up" and goes to fight. It isn't that his character wouldn't recover and bury his emotions, but it needed to be addressed to come full circle other than "I accept my adopted family now."
The other aspect was the building of friendships and standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. That thread was there and was overshadowed by Shazam's selfishness (ahem...spider-man and wrestling anyone) and those bad guys (get to them in a minute). Captain Marvel is NOT spider-man. Captain Marvel gets magical powers and lives every kid's ultimate wish fulfillment. Spider-Man gets powers and his actions have impact on the real world. Sure, you can borrow from one to another, but in doing so you move Captain Marvel away from who and what he is - fantasy wackiness.
That's what I wanted more than CGI slugfests (again, nothing wrong with those) from this movie. I can get that from ANY movie, especially superheros. This was a special opportunity to do something very different. The plots surrounding Billy's coming of age story was great...but rather than have generic slugfests, why not embrace the bizarre silver age nature of the source material and make it work.
And setting your climatic battle in Santa's Village amusement park is NOT the same thing.
And the Mr. Tawny cameo as a stuffed carnival booth prize?? C'mon...we needed Mr. TAwyne.
Dr. Silvana is not a physical powerhouse...he's a mad scientist who creates scenarios that the Big Red Cheese (ahem, where was THAT nickname...) has to undo. It's a kid's fantasies come to life. That didn't come clearly through in the film. It was like it was a bit afraid to commit.
Not everything works, of course. Until you find a way to make it work...and then you're labeled a genius.
My wish fulfillment was that more Shazam / Captain Marvel elements be embraced rather than this more realistic grounded approach. More than anything, Mr. Tawny! I loved the part where the marvel family finally showed up. Do more of that.
Still, for what it is, not a bad movie. Emotionally stirring and fun action. If it only had a talking tiger it could have had five stars... :)

SHAZAM! 3D

DC's Extended Film Universe continues and it does so with a lightning strike called Shazam!
Like Superman and Batman, Shazam has been there from the beginning as it gained popularity among readers of its age. But while the others have had movies made, it's only now that Shazam gets its long-overdue movie.
A teenager attempting to find his lost family ends up living day by day on the streets as he finds a powerful wizard who imbues him with the powers of six mighty beings from antiquity, the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. All this power turns Billy Batson into the superhero Shazam.
People have described this movie as Superman meets the Tom Hanks movie Big. It's an accurate description given Zachary Levi plays Billy Batson/Shazam as a superhero manchild. With a dynamic like that its no surprise this movie is filled with wonderful humor as well as spectacular action and adventure that DC comics can bring as Billy Batson is put to the test when he realizes the powers he's been given are to stop a villain coveting a terrible power. Just as Billy has been given power by six mighty beings of renown, Thaddeus Sivana is powered by the embodiment of the seven dead deadly sins.
Facing such a peril Billy takes on this threat all while finding out the true power of virtue and family.
I've got to say that after several hits and misses DCEU has done another good job with Shazam! It's not perfect, some of the humor is a little too infantile at times but it's still a good story. Asher Angel and Zachary Levi do a great job as the streetwise teen turned human at their full potential, with Asher playing a young man toughened by his years on the street convincingly and Zachary playing the teenager in an adult body superbly. Mark Strong plays the role of Dr. Sivana comfortably, clearly an actor who enjoys playing villains. The family of Billy Batson is also wonderful as it proves that true family doesn't begin or end with blood. The action is phenomenal and I can only hope its eventual sequels will live up to.
As for the features on this product. I got to say that it has been a long time since I enjoyed the special features on a Blu-ray. Best Buy does a wonderful job in releasing the 3D version that aired in theaters. Its a shame that Blu-ray 3D is being phased out for 4K, sometimes I wish they just combine the two. Though this is not IMAX quality, it's still great that I can enjoy this movie in the same quality when I first saw it in theaters. Thank goodness for Best-Buy.
As to the other special features, the DVD includes one basic feature on Shazam that is shown better on the Blu-ray disc. But its the Blu-ray disc that has the rest of the special features which includes behind the scenes footage, an actual funny gag real, a special look at the actors that play the Shazam family and my personal favorite, over 30 minutes of alternate and deleted scenes.
A great purchase, so glad I bought this straight from Best Buy. B

Apologies for the pre-amble. :)
Shazam! I remember watching the 1970's childrens' live-action show as a small child and having fun with that show. I even got to see a couple of the old black and white serials of Shazam! The idea behind Shazam! was that a young boy, Billy Batson (usually portrayed as around 12 or 13 years old) is chosen by a powerful wizard to become the World's Mightiest Mortal. When Billy utters the name of the wizard, Shazam!, he transforms into a super-powered adult male with abilities that almost rival Superman's. (Almost.) He can fly, he's bullet-proof (at least in the film), he is possessed of considerable strength and speed.
In the 1970's childrens' series, Billy was a young man (likely around 19-20 years of age) who, when in times of dire need utters the word SHAZAM! (Because of the Immortals...Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, Mercury) he transforms into a 30-something version of himself, endowed with superpowers.
Even in the Justice League animated series, and a few of the DC animated movies, Billy Batson is a young boy chosen by a wizard to become the hero, Shazam!
Now to the film:
This film goes back to the original concept of Shazam! as a wizard (who invokes the names of the mythical gods I listed above...a nice nod to the childrens' series) who finds a young (12-13 year old) boy, Billy Batson, a frequent runaway from Foster homes, whom he deems worthy to wield the power of the wizard, and to be his champion.
The story is full of laugh riot moments as this tends to mimick the Tom Hanks' film, "Big". (There's even a nice nod to that film). Billy does not know what to do with his newly acquired/bestowed abilities, and relies on his Foster brother, who is a big time Superman fan, to help him discover exactly what he can and cannot do. The story does have a more dramatic, and occasionally darker narrative, but it does not overshadow the fun one can have with this film, and indeed offsets the comedy perfectly.
DC movies have largely been dark, or at least deadly-serious with The Dark Knight trilogy, and Man of Steel (both of which I thoroughly enjoyed). I never saw Justice League, so I don't know where that really falls. However, the recent crop of DC films has been a lot of fun. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and now Shazam! All three of these films are family friendly, and just tons of fun to watch! Since I bought the 3D version of this film, I shall have to run this on my PS4 VR helmet. :)
