Customers have good things to say about the remastered graphics, engaging story, and overall value for the price of Shenmue I & II. Many appreciate the game's place as a pioneer in the open-world genre, though some find the controls and voice acting to be dated. The HD upgrade is also frequently praised, enhancing the classic experience. However, a few players mention that the game's pacing may feel slow to modern players.

Shenmue was a game that revolutionized gaming at the time of its original release. Now, coming from someone that didn't grow up with this game it feels basic and it rightfully should. Considering series that took inspiration from Shenmue like Yakuza, Persona 3,4,5 and even games like GTA where they're open world cities with things to do, lots more in comparison to Shenmue. Exploring the cities are fun but again feel very rough with having to hear to the low sounding voices and effects. My least favorite parts were far too long to warrant a higher rating from me as having to wait for certain events to happen and having to drive a forklift so many times it gets very boring. If you can open yourself up to what this game did for gaming then definitely check it out as it is still a landmark in the medium.

These are more obscure but definitely worth the play. They look like Dreamcast games for it’s not a remaster but a rerelease with a little bit better graphics. It plays like a Dreamcast game to control wise. Great story, can’t wait for part 3.

This is one of the first games to have had such an detailed open world. Not only is it the first to do open world well it is the first and still the only to pay attention to detail and present it so well. This game needs patience and when you finally do get through it you will be glad you did.
This is a remake of an original Dreamcast game from Sega with some of the team that worked on the Yakuza series. You will enjoy this game and you better get ready with the 3rd game coming out this August!
Give it a shot. It is a good price and you get 2 games for the price of HALF of one game in market.
Enjoy the beautiful towns of Japan, the martial arts and atmosophere of China too. The most immersive game I have ever played and have always compared every new game to this one.

Alas many tears were shed when I found out Sega would no longer be making consoles, simply because I knew this game...Perhaps the grandfather of Grand Theft Auto 3, and the long lost brother of Ocarina of time (Free roam wise) would never be getting a proper end to it’s Trilogy. Fast forward to the present! We’re in business baby! If you’ve ever had the privilege of playing this game in the past, just the nostalgia alone is worth a purchase. Especially at such a great price, you’ve got to do your part and purchase so we can finally get an updated final Shenmue game. New comers don’t be shy, a very interesting story; fun gameplay (Ground breaking free roam & perhaps the blue print for Future Batman Asylum games fighting gameplay) await you!

Revisiting an Aged Classic

This game is for those who remember it from 1999. Understand it was groundbreaking at the time of release but the controls in particular haven't aged well. Still, great story, great precursor that later led to the great Yakuza series.

While I only spent a short amount of time playing Shenmue 1 on Sega Dreamcast I was astonished to see that Sega was going to either pull a cash grab or actually re release this game for the genuine need for more people to try their unique take on an adventure/simulation game. I believed these games helped pioneer the Yakuza series which is still alive till this day. Shenmue II is better and is definitely worthy of its time in 2001 for a game being literally 20 years old Shenmue proves that it was ahead of its time

for those old enough to have enjoyed the originals on dreamcast and xbox there is nothing new in this slight remaster, but the cleaner visuals do help a very old classic groundbreaking game look a little less dated with its port to modern consoles. With the 3rd game to be coming out its nice to have this port of the original games for those who want to relive the memories or play the series in order for the first time. A great series with lots to do. Just remember this is a much older set of games so dont expect all new upgraded textures a full remaster might get.

Had both the original Shenmue and the Japanese Imported Shenmue 2 for the Dreamcast. All I can say is that it was a true vision of a real time RPG with the true introduction of QTE (Quick Time Events) at the time of release. Even the mechanics of the game was great, at that time, and it still is especially the combat system. For the first timers playing this game, you will get frustrated at first with the QTE, but once you get the hang of it, this game will be great experience as to see what Sega actually had in the Dreamcast system for it's many potentials.

Shenmue finally returns!
You genuinely have no idea how long I have wanted to see this happen, the amount of times I and millions of other fans have requested to see this series brought back let alone a sequel so we can see what exactly happened with Ryo and his story of revenge. Finally now we have both games in HD and on current gen as well as on PC. I've had to emulate this game for years which has always been difficult in general but something fans worked on all the same to be able to achieve similar results visually.

There is no way I can convey the timeless beautiful nature of Shenmue in a review here. The best way to describe it is that this series from famed Sega designer Yu Suzuki is the father/building block of all modern game design. Open world, quick time button presses, non linear progression, time based events and weather system were all pioneered with Shenmue. The combat system is one of the deepest in any action RPG and the story (cheesy voice acting aside lol) is well done and filled with interesting characters.

Did you miss out on Shenmue on the Dreamcast and Xbox? Well this is the first two games ported to a modern console to get you ready for Shenmue III. A very deep tale about Ryu and his quest. Many real world experiences are replicated in this game that you don't see anywhere else. Also a great time of day mechanic that makes you have to plan when and where you do things. Deeper than I can fully explain here.

I really shouldn’t even like this game,it’s sooo frustrating yet also really fun too,I had rented it from GameFly and by the time I was able to keep it they removed the keep button from the game’s page, sooo,I sent it back and looked at the cyber sales and found it for only 15 bucks! I still haven’t made it past the motorcycle mission in Shenmue 1,but I’m glad to have this cult classic in my collection at last.

I played the Dreamcast and Xbox versions of these game years ago so when I heard they were being remastered I was excited. These two remasters are excellent. The bump in resolution really make the game look sharper and prettier. Everything else is the same which is good because the game was great to begin with. If you are a fan of the series and want to relive the experience check out this compilation.

Definitely recommend these classics. Shenmue I (Dreamcast) and Shenmue II (Dreamcast, Xbox, Xbox 360 backwards compatible), are now available on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4! These are my personal favorite games of all time. Don't forget to check out Shenmue III on PlayStation 4, Epic Games Store, and Steam (November 19th, 2020)! And then on to #SaveShenmueIV!

It's great revisiting the Shenmue franchise. I would argue that it was well ahead of it's time and still arguably one of the best RPG/Fighter games of all time. The graphics have been cleaned up since the games original launch though not much needed to be done whereas Shenmue was a very beautiful game compared to other games that launched in it's day. I am disappointed though many details that made the game a great time waster was removed or made linear where it was previously non-linear. Checking dressers, cabinets, collecting cassettes, learning and the practice needed to master moves, and other elements. This takes from some of the replayability of the game and much of what made Shenmue so revolutionary. Considering the space available in the Blu-ray format and the technology available now, I can not understand why the game was scaled down. If you want to sell it as multiple disks to release it in its full glory, please do that. I enjoy the game despite the noticable differences from the original.

Fun fact: I bought a Dreamcast back in the day and LOVED it! The first console I was able to hook-up to a computer monitor. At the time, that was top of the line. And Shenmue was it's crowing achievement. The games don't hold up quite as well - the dialogue leaves a lot to be desired - David Mamet this ain't. And the controls are a bit cumbersome. Saying that, there are very few games that nail the atmosphere of small-town life as well as Shenmue does.
