    great alternative to satellite radio

My local alternative radio station changed formats to "all 90's all the time." I needed something to listen to on the commute and satellite radio was going to be too costly for the amount of use I expected and I would like to get new music and variety outside of my personal music collection. The Slacker is a great service since it's "internet radio to go." It doesn't take too long to charge but the initial firmware upgrade and station refresh killed the charge. I can't get the G2 to sync over my usb connection (just keeps trying to connect but never does) and I haven't had enough time to troubleshoot what is causing the problem (firewall, ICS, etc.). The wifi works great but does eat up battery. Also, the very first time I tried to use it, even though it said the stations were refreshed, it wouldn't play anything. I had to charge it 100% and then all of a sudden the firmware install completed and everything started working. The volume button on our unit is a little finicky - it either doesn't respond or goes way up/down. The scroll wheel is responsive but it's a little tedious typing out things like WPA key using the scroll wheel. When the unit is shut down it takes longer than my iPod or MP3 players to start up. Otherwise, we're very happy with the Slacker G2. It has a good number of stations to choose from and even though the free service says there's ads, I've only heard it say "You're listening to Slacker..." a few times, so definitely not enough to make me upgrade to paid service. I'm also ok with being able to skip 5-6 songs per hours, you just can't go back or save songs to memory with the free service.

The previous reviewer talking about gimmiicks, I don't get that comment at all. There are no gimmicks and I can tell this reviewer didn't use the device making comments like that. The station selection is great and are professionally programmed. You can even tweak them by using the fine tuning from the web based player which impact the stations on the G2. Don't like a particular artist, ban them and never hear them again. You want to hear more of an artist favor them and you will. Creating stations is a reall treat and I've made several of them with tons of artist and I have been very pleased. The fine tuning basically allows you to go with hits, or little fringe or you can select classics or hits or somewhere in between. If you subscribe to the premium serivce you can even request specific songs. This truly is portable radio that you can almost program yourself with minimal effort. They don't call it Slacker for nothing! They do have to conform with certain gudelines so you can't create like single artist channels. You can go wth a 25 station model or a 40 station. I find the 4gb 25 station model sufficient. You initially start out with 100 songs per station, but if you don't use all 25 station slots this leaves space so that your stations actually accumulate more songs and my understanding is that you can have a maximum of 500 songs in any given station. That is a lot of music with no repeats! I really enjoy the Slacker and couldn't recommend it more... Try it! You'll Love it!

    Great concept, good buy!

Very simply, it's just like the internet radio at slacker.com, if you like that service, and want that selection in your car or out and about, go for it. I like music, but I don't like to search for new music online and pay so much a month for a few new songs, but I do get a little bored with my ipod's selection. I love this because it's easy to hear good music. I turn it on and let it go just like any other radio, but it knows my favorites, and I can always ban the more annoying songs. New music all the time, and it refreshes automatically by wifi while I charge it, and it adapts to your tastes. My opinion is that the sound quality is BETTER than Sirius. AAC encoding, but an unknown bitrate. Ads are rare and not intrusive, but you can go premium with no ads for cheap. reviews and bios with each song is entertaining. The plastic screen does scratch easily, and the buttons are kind of odd in placement, but totally usable. It's just an "on and go" radio device for slackers who don't want to deal with playlists and such,so if you need total control over your music, get an MP3 player instead (It does play mp3's tho). Battery life is good, should get you through a day. Hardware is good overall, looks sharp. You can store your favorites and play them anytime with a premium subscription. Important- premium subscription is different than the plus subcription, and their site isn't clear on that. Check their forums if you want to save your favorites as a playlist on the device. Very happy with it! Yay for slackers!

    Slacker Rocks

I picked up the G2 a couple of days ago. I am used to Slacker because I use it at work while at my desk. I wanted to be able to transport the same great stations that I listen to while at work. I programmed the G2 to my preset stations and away I went. I used it at work all day. It has great sound, the song selection was true to my selections and the ban feature is awesome. I would recommend this for anyone who wants hands free listening. It is cool because, unlike most mp3 players, you don't have to stop and handle the machine to make selections. Just program your station with the artists and or songs that you want and leave it alone. The G2 also worked great in my truck. I have an mp3 direct jack and it works great while driving.

I've only had the G2 for a few days, but I've been playing with Slacker for a while now ... and if you love music, particularly a broad range, there's nothing out there that comes close to what Slacker can do for your music collection. And the G2 means you don't have to carry a notebook computer around with you to enjoy the enormous range of music available on the Slacker network ... ANYWHERE. Look ma, no signal required! Even on an airplane or in a tunnel underground. Even better, YOU get to pick the artists and then it starts trying to find others like that ... so you learn about even MORE artists in that style and find even more music to like. Not one song of which do you have to pay one single penny for, 100% legally, aboveboard and NO viruses. So what are you waiting for?! About the only other real downside is that the system does not work very well for very long multi-piece compositions, such as story albums or symphonies that are meant to be listened to end to end. But that's what the extra 1G of RAM is for. So you can load even those or your own band's music and take it along with you as well! Oh, yeah, and it's also very easy to use, and this coming from someone who designs such things. No 'extra' gimmicks or gizmos to get in the way of the music. Beautiful. Been a long time since I've used a piece of electronics/software that was this well designed and did it's job so far past any of my expectations.

Like i said after 6 years of paying way to much for Sirius i got a deal for a stiletto2 for 149$ so i got it. After 4 bad units i told them to give me my money back and looked around for some thing to replace my Sirius. (They even wanted to give me a stiletto2 for 1$ at that point,by the way thos things are junk) I found this and the quality is 100X better and loads 2500 songs at a time. I hope people see that Sirius is just ripping you off for junk quality radio. Near CD LOL no way! Any way this unit is vary near i use it in my car, riding my bike, or in my spa and people are like where is that coming from. They can not be lave its not my ipod. Now the next thing people ask why not just your ipod. One reason is i have only (MY MUSIC) so i can not use it when we are on a road trip. Also when i use it i only listen to the same bands over and over. With the slacker i get my music and lots that i did not know about because Sirius plays the same junk over and over and over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, it is a pricey unit but i love it AAA+++ check out the web site vary cool. price drop--->99$ and i think they would sell vary fast.

    G2 improvements

I have a Slacker G1 and G2. I real good way to understand the portable player is to use www.slacker.com I bought a G1 and have had problems with it sometimes. It seems to be slow and buggy. The G2 is a much more perfect version. I really have to say I like everything, however you need to realize this is a "radio" player and is NOT an mp3 player. You get great diversity of tunes, but you can't go back/rewind on a free account. I have yet to use the internal memory for putting on my own podcasts and mp3's. I would like to, but did not. I would like the pay account if it was cheaper. This and ooma are my two killer hardware toys as of recent. I would pay more than what they are selling them for. Also, the headphones are pretty nice on the G2 (g1 headphones suck). My wife is using my G1 after I did a firmware update. She is impressed and really likes the G1. I do not plan on showing her how much better the G2 is. I am very critical person and I rate this 5 stars. Go get it.

The Slacker G2 makes me feel proud to be a slacker. Itʻs become an addiction really. Since using it Iʻve discovered new music; music that I like that Iʻve never heard of before, simply because I am listening to radio stations created by people who know really great music. Music I didnʻt know that well, until using it...everywhere. I take this thing everywhere; it sits on my buckle. I donʻt have to click too often except to turn the volume up. Donʻt need to sync it very often since there is so much space (any wireless network and a click will do) and it updates the music. Didnʻt like the ipod; love the Slacker G2. Iʻve got my favorite music a couple clicks away. The slacker device will change your life. Its free music, easily, at high quality. Three words, canʻt believe it..

    New Music Experience

I really like the Slacker internet radio service for ease of use, access to an abundance of music, music discovery, and the artist information. I listen to Slacker on my PC at work every day which led me to buy the portable player. So far I am very pleased with my purchase. I get bascially the same features as I do on the web but in a device I can take with me. I have several portable players (iPod & Zen) but this is now my player of choice. When I opend my device, it had a dead battery which was a bummer, but an overnight charge solved that problem. The device has been issue free since. Single best thing about it is FREE MUSIC and it's legal!

Have been using the Slacker online service for some time, and was thrilled when the G2 went on sale at BB. Had Sirius in the past but only listened to their music stations, and so it wasn't a good value for me. Needed something for the car and for working out, and tried just relying on my MP3 player - I don't have time to search for a lot of new music or set up playlists, and that grew stale quickly. Slacker is perfect for me. It has the ease of sat radio, with better sound quality and it's so easy to customize your stations. The ability to ban songs is empowering. And the music is FREE!

Best little gadget around! If you are into IPODs, Sirius (satellite radio), this is a gadget to try! You can download music for free to this device from the slacker website www.slacker.com, and has great sound. You should check out website before you buy and you'll be convinced. You can refresh your stations WiFi once you have chosen your artists, music, etc. or you can also save your favorite songs with a premium radio subscription. Extremely easy to use. Just try it, you'll not regret it!

Neat device that provides hours and hours of music

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Slacker Internet Radio is a neat service with about 2 million songs in it's music catalog. This portable is a lot smaller then you would think but, with the rubber case (included) it's quite durable. I personally do not like the volume button placement which is along the top right of the radio instead of along the side which is more common on these types of devices. You do have good control over what types of music you will listen to if you set up your account first at www.slacker.com. In fact, before even considering buying this I would recommend you go to the website and see how the whole customized stations work. If you want, say an all Nirvana station you won't actually get one. You will end up with bands that SOUND like Nirvana. Overall this is one of those neat gadgets to have just because you love gadgets and music. But if your considering spending this kind of money I would recommend looking into Sirius XM Satellite Radio which offers an excellent premium Internet radio service that has superior sound quality to this service. Plus you can install those radios in your home and car as well as portable. The Slacker G2 is portable period and lacks a lot of flexibility.

I know you have read it before, but I am here to say the same thing, after purchasing this little guy, I have no use for and in fact sold off my ipod. This player has 1gb for my 'must have' songs, and the rest is filled up with the 25 stations of my choosing, and they are getting better and better every time I resync. If you are thinking about getting the Slacker, do it. I waited about 4 months before I finally got it, and wish I would have purchased it sooner.

This is such a wonderful radio! It plays such great music. My mother is not so technologically advanced and somehow she has learned how to work the whole system with great ease. The price is excellent (sure beats paying yearly for XM/SIRIUS) PLUS did I mention that I only have the basic service and I have yet to hear more than 3 commercials. It is WONDERFUL! So thrilled with this purchase.

The product is great and the selection of music that comes with each station is outstanding. I like the product and service so well, I'm thinking of buying a paid subscription. My only minor problem is connecting directly to my computer, but the wifi works great so I'm fine. When I charge the battery, I merely connect and refresh the stations. Also, I noticed the face will scratch easily.

This has got to be my favorite gadget ever!!!! I've tried pretty much every satellite radio, and MP3 player out there and this is the best of both worlds. You can pick a station and put it on play and save songs to your on demand library as you go. There are tons of new songs, and current hits that you can save without paying a per download price. It's fantastic! I use the desktop application when I'm at work to create stations, rate artists, etc. The more you use it, the more it "knows" your taste and before long it playing all your favorite songs one right after the other. I love the comedy station and all the Indi stations. With all the different stations they offer, there's something for everyone. I even went back and got one for my 69 year old mother for her birthday!

I love this thing!! I don't have to invest an "arm and a leg" to get thousands of songs NOW, and the ability to choose stations and create artist stations is awesome!! I've discovered new songs too that I are my new favorites, and it learns to please you even more as you go because you tell it which songs are your favorites and even can block ones you hate. If I hear a new song I love, I can choose to see the album cover in full color and read the artist bio on the spot. I am thinking of ditching my satellite radio and it's monthly fees and saving a bundle!! You gotta try this, you won't be sorry!! I'm so glad I did!

My Ipod died for good, and I gave this player a try because I listen to Slacker Radio on my computer at work and at home. I don't regret the choice at all, because now I can take the music wherever I want. The best part is that you can set up your own custom stations with as many artists as you desire on the website, and sync them to your player. The Slacker G2 is very good for discovering artists you haven't heard of yet, and there are fine tuning options for your stations, which other internet radio stations and players are lacking. Very nice.
