Sub was better than i expected and although i dont have anything that pushes Atmos the dolby digital sounds great and the simulated surround is pretty good surprisingly. I had some trouble getting the delay worked out so it matched the movies but i think it was from the hdmi pass through i was using. Little pricey so find it on sale but great features and sound quality.

Simple Set-Up, Realistic Sound For Smaller Spaces

After two weeks of enjoying this Sony 2.1 Channel Dolby Atmos®/DTS:X™ Soundbar with Bluetooth® Technology and 4K HDR Support, I am totally astonished by the quality reproduction of sound engineered into this soundbar system. The set-up is so simple that I had this soundbar up and running 10 minutes out of the box. I originally set this soundbar up in my Living Room, which is not as large as my Family Room. Glad I did. The acoustics of this Sony soundbar are optimized for harder wall surface materials (like plastered walls) that reflect sound much more readily. My smaller-sized Living Room with hard-plastered walls and 10' high ceiling is the ideal environment for the amazing sound quality from this soundbar. Sony's 'Vertical Sound Engine', actually creates virtual surround sound that seems to come from all around my Living Room. Wow!
Important Points:
* Soundbar – It should be connected by HDMI cable to the ARC port of your TV. This connection allows High Definition Audio like Dolby Atmos®, Dolby Digital Plus®, Dolby TrueHD®, DTS-HD Master Audio®, DTS:X®, 5.1/7.1 Multi Channel PCM, etc. to pass through from your TV or other Audio Devices to the soundbar. This soundbar also supports a USB 'A' connection and analog through a stereo mini port (3.5 mm).
* No ARC Port on Your TV? – You can still connect this Sony soundbar with an Optical Cable. However, the sound formats that can be transmitted are Dolby® Digital, Dolby® Dual mono, DTS®, LPCM 2ch, Dolby® Digital EX. This is still quality sound, but you won't be able to take advantage of the latest High Definition Audio formats, like the featured Dorby® Atmos.
* HDR Support – High Dynamic Range, HDR, is the latest feature being installed on all newer TV's. It goes beyond 4K with Ultra-High Definition Video, which contrasts blacks, whites and colors to deeper and higher brilliance, while displaying much finer details. This Sony soundbar supports all three of the latest HDR formats, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG.
* Vertical Sound Engine – This is Sony's latest technology using upward-firing speakers, which reflect sound above and behind you for a heightened, three-dimensional sound stage. These work best in rooms with flat ceilings up to 11 feet high and made of hard, reflective material (My Living Room).
* Sound Modes – There are seven pre-set sound modes, Auto Sound, Cinema, Music, Game Studio, News, Sports, Standard. No need for an Equalizer. Additional sound effects are Night Mode and Voice Mode.
* Bluetooth – You can Bluetooth your TV to this soundbar, but I would not recommend this type of connection. A wired connection (HDMI to ARC) should be your first choice (It is always much more stable). My wife connects her phone to this Sony soundbar through Bluetooth and plays selections from Pandora when not watching the TV.
* Subwoofer – This wireless subwoofer is outstanding and provides plenty of low frequency 'boom'. It pairs with the soundbar automatically as soon as it is plugged in. It has its own volume control on the remote, which is highly unusual, but a heck of a nice feature. I placed mine in a corner of my Living Room for more added, reflective bass effect and resonating punch. However, since it is wireless, you can place it anywhere you choose.
* Digital Assistants – This soundbar is not enabled for commands to any of the digital assistants, Alexa, Cortana, Google, etc.
* Sound Quality – Even though this Sony soundbar is able to pass through the latest Dolby audio formats, not every TV program has the latest audio technology sound presentations. So, be prepared for mediocre sound from some TV stations, whether they are cable, satellite, or OTA. I have an Ultra HD Blue Ray Player, which play movies in HDR and all of the latest Dolby formats. This Sony soundbar does a fantastic job of delivering crisp, theater-quality, simulated, surround sound from just two speakers and a vibrant subwoofer. WooHoo!
* Sony AV System Remote – The included remote is a multi-functional device. It allows me to switch between HDMI connections to activate a Blue-Ray player, or other auxiliary connected device, and, or, USB, or analog device. I can activate any one of the seven pre-set audio sound modes, and initiate the voice or night effect. I can also use the remote to pair another device like a Smart Phone using the Bluetooth button. And, of course, the main feature button is the Vertical Sound Engine, which when activated, produces phenomenal, realistic, theater surround sound. Besides the main volume control there is a subwoofer volume control, which is unique, and a handy, fun feature. Several remaining controls are Mute, Back, Options, Dimmer, Display, etc.
I found that at this time there is very little HDR content available. Some of the latest DVD's feature all three of the HDR formats. Some cable and Internet selections are also available. But, HR-Compatible TV's are now a 'Must-Have' feature. It won't be too long before tons of HDR content will be out there. TIP: If you are looking at any new 4K TV's or Blue-Ray players – make sure you choose HDR - Compatible. And, of course, TV's with an ARC port.
Although this Sony soundbar only has two front speakers the engineering to simulate 5.1/7.1 surround sound is absolutely astounding. Coupled with the powerful subwoofer this is one five-star system. The highs are clear and crisp. The mid-ranges are rich and variable, and true to Dolby Atmos' objective, three-dimensional, scaled height dimensional sounds. Sony's subwoofer is one of the best I have ever enjoyed listening too. YooHoo!
Recommendations:
* If you are thinking of buying a new 4K TV and, or, Blue-Ray player, upgrade to all of the HDR - Compatible standards. I could not believe the fine details of the contrasting blacks, grays, and whites. The colors are so rich and deep – it will soon be the norm.
* This Sony 2.1 Channel Dolby Atmos®/DTS:X™ Soundbar is ideal for smaller to medium sized rooms. For its price-point it delivers full-bodied simulated, surround sound for a fraction of the cost of a 5.1 or 7.1 system. I highly recommend it. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Easy Hanging, great sound

All in all this sound bar is a pretty one. The sound is solid and the set up is a breeze.
When i first opened up the sound bar i notice how easy it was to hang. A few screw and it was up. Its relatively light weight, but packed a punch. The one thing, design wise that i did not completely like, was the woofer. It looks like a PC tower, no bells or whistles about it. Looks aside, it does however throw out some major thump.
A second area of design that i really liked was the indicators of where plug in and controls are located. Example, on other electronics i own, it was not clearly market where volume controls are located or which port equals HDMI 1 and which port was HDMI 2. That was a nice touche.
Overall, light weight, easy to install, great sound and good functional indicators. Great item!

Good Soundbar with some trade-offs
|

I was excited to upgrade from an older sounder to this one purely because of the support for Dolby Atmos and the powered, wireless sub woofer. We already have a Sony UHD player so I thought, great - this'll play nicely. It does have some bells and whistles that are nice, but there are some trade offs to be sure.
First, the sound bar itself is very slim, as you can see in my picture. The Samsung soundbar we upgraded from was quite large and was actually kept in the space where we ended up moving our UHD player and game consoles to in our TV stand. The main reason we couldn't just replace the soundbar was because the Sony uses a Vertical Sound feature. This pushes sound up to make it more immersive, but when kept in a tv stand cutout, you lose that capability, meaning a re-thinking of our setup was required.
The sounder itself comes with 3 connection types: HDMI-ARC, Optical, and Bluetooth. In order to get the Atmos experience, you need to utilize the HDMI-ARC connection and have a TV that supports it. Our TV supports Atmos, so that means we get to enjoy great sound out of every input. The Optical connection is there for older TVs that don't support the HDMI-ARC format and Bluetooth is added for pairing a smart phone to stream music from. Although Sony advertises a wireless setup option using Bluetooth, I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking to get the best sound out of your setup.
What's nice about this unit is that it also supports HDMI passthrough. There's another HDMI input so you can plug a device into this and then run the HDMI-ARC out to the HDMI-ARC input on your TV.
I was disappointed to see that there was no wifi option, nor does this come with any smart home option. You can't control it using Sony's Sound+ app like you can their headphones or other wifi speakers. I feel like this is a step back when most soundbar setups at this price offer wifi and a smart assistant feature.
The woofer connects automatically once you power it on - an important thing to note is that both the bar and the woofer have the power cord attached, meaning you might need to be aware of some more fun getting power cables through your set up - unlike other sounders that have a power cord that you can detach.
Once I got this thing up and running it was nice - everything sounded great, until we got to the quiet part of a movie. Dialog suffers compared to music and sound effects. The woofer itself has it's own volume control on the remote, but I ended up cranking it all the way up before I could hear some bass boom.
If you have a smaller room, or a basic setup that you don't want to overthink, then I'd recommend this. That being said, there's other soundbars that are a comparable price that also include additional features such as Alexa, Google Home, Wifi, etc. If Sony was to drop the price from $500 to $300, then I think it'd be more reasonable, unless they find a way to add more features through a firmware upgrade. I'd say I'd recommend this, but for a very specific user who doesn't need a lot of connectivity options.

If you're in the market for a soundbar to add some loudness/bass to your home theater setup, this isn't the one you want. Price wise, there are cheaper options out there if you're looking for additional speakers to add to your home theater setup. For those wanting a bit more or an upgrade to their existing sound system, then this is the one for you.
This is Sony's mid-level soundbar system however it will easily meet the needs for any audio enthusiast. This soundbar was made to couple with Sony's BRAVIA X900F. Basically any TV that has an HDMI ARC port will work with this soundbar. However, if you don't, not a huge thing however you'll need to connect it with a Digital optical out cable.
The sound of this sound bar is quite good and noticeable the first time you turn it on. The sound produced from this is very crisp/clear with a touch of bass where needed. There are 5 different pre-set sound configurations so it'll be good to cycle through them and see which one suits you. The subwoofer is about normal size so it should fit nicely pretty much anywhere. It's also a nice contrast of gloss/matte black so it looks good as well. You will definitely need some time to setup/configure the soundbar however it'll be worth it once that's been completed.
Only thing left will be for you to enjoy to rich sound this soundbar system offers.

4K HDR Deserves Incredible Audio

As someone who was an early adopter of 4K, who has had a few generations of Sony 4K televisions now, as well as someone who has discovered he is somewhat of an audiophile. I can tell you that the one thing that makes 4K HDR video all the more incredible is an incredible sound system. If you’re looking to pair your 4K HDR television with incredible audio in the form of a soundbar and wireless subwoofer then look no further. The Sony HT-X9000F provides incredible audio and is beautiful not only in it’s amazing design but also in its simplicity. You simply connect the soundbars output HDMI to the TV’s Audio Return Channel (ARC) HDMI connector and then connect your video and audio source, such as Blu-ray disc, Apple TV or satellite box etc., to the soundbars input HDMI. If however your TV does not have an HDMI labeled “ARC” then you can simply use an optical audio cable to connect TV to the soundbar. You might be surprised to know though that ARC is definitely the preferred method if your TV supports it.
As soon as you power on the soundbar it will automatically connect to the subwoofer (included) and you should see a green LED on the subwoofer. No need for any additional setup to pair the soundbar with the subwoofer. Simplicity is definitely something Sony was looking to provide here.
If your TV is wall mounted then the soundbar can be wall mounted right below the TV. The back of the soundbar is already prepared to be mounted to the wall and instructions on how to do this are provided. I’ll be doing this myself shortly and it looks almost as simple as the initial setup.

This Sony soundbar it’s all you need for your home theater. Great size and can be install on the wall or place it on your tv stand, the wireless connection was easy to set up , but if you want to see and control the menu, software updates and other settings on your tv , you most connect the HDMI cable included. The wireless subwoofer and the vertical sound settings makes the movie experience on my 4K TV super awesome. The system also includes secure link for the wireless connection on the subwoofer to prevent interference with other devices.
The HDMI cable included is not that long, so if you need extra length of HDMI, you may have to buy a longer HDMI.

So I've been researching soundbars basically for the past year. Though I've wanted a new one, I've had an old LG for the last 8 years that works, so I didn't feel compelled to pull the trigger on a new one. Initially I had my eyes set on the Yamaha YAS 207 which I convinced a friend to get and don't get me wrong, that sounds great. I really wanted to get a soundbar that could output Dolby Atmos, but I was hesitant to spend over $500 and be disappointed.
Last week, I saw this one on sale for $400 from $600 and I bought an out-of-box for just under $300. The verdict? On the night I set up this soundbar, I left my LG in w/ the optical, but it on top of my new Sony soundbar, cranked it all the way up 40 and listened. Then I shut it off and turned on the Sony at 20 (volume goes up to 50) and there was an extreme difference in sound. My old LG was very hollow and the Sony's has such a wide sound stage. I live in a large studio apartment where I can swivel my TV when I'm in bed and swivel it the other way when I'm on the couch and I used to turn my soundbar too to hear it better. I no longer need to do so with this one. From just 2 small oval speakers in the bar, the sound is very rich and dialogue is clear.
I have my XBOX one that is connected directly to the bar and set up Dolby Atmos. Though I can't say for sure if I've heard anything behind me over the past few days, I certainly can say I do hear sound from above. When Atmos content isn't available, the Vertical Surround does a nice job of making the sound still feel fairly immersive. I've played music through the soundbar too via bluetooth and I am happy with the sound quality. The only con I could say, if you like deep bass, this soundbar might not be for you. Bass output is decent, but I wouldn't want complaints from all of my neighbors so I'm good with it. I do listen to a lot of hip hop, but the bass is still good for regular listening. When watching TV, I don't feel comfortable putting it above 25 and this soundbar is LOUD! I'm watching an ATMOS title right now on Netflix, Our Planet during the middle of the day and just put the sound down to 16 from 19 as I felt the scene was getting too loud!
If you're looking for an entry into Dolby ATMOS and you don't want to spend a pretty penny, I'd pick up this Sony right now.

I am not a techie or a sound person so I can't write a review like the ones I've been reading. I'm mainly writing to let the non techies, non sound bar educated people know that the great reviews you are reading about this sound bar are true! This is easy to set up (we have a new 850 series TV for which we purchased the soundbar and it's our first soundbar) and easy to use. There are a lot of options, very few of which I understand yet, except for the Vertical S. I can hear the difference when watching a movie and using the surround sound option. Again, the detailed reviews people are posting give excellent information. I'm very pleased we got this model. Because we don't have a huge room, I have no regrets in getting this model vs the model that is a step higher. It's not necessary for our needs and we still have the benefit of great sound.

I think the soundbar does a great job simulating the ATMOS field. I have an up firing model and I can tell the difference. Overall the sound is a lot louder when it is playing Dolby Atmos over the Dolby digital I still think the soundbar could to a little better. For $399.99 I can't really complain though. I do think would I have the larger capital for the remodel of the bedroom, I would have gone with the HTZ9F model as it has 3.1 Channels (One dedicated to Voice).

Bought this for my 55 inch sony 930e TV in family room. The room is 14X20 feet so pretty large size. The TV by itself is pretty weak and sometimes we have a hard time hearing. This soundbar is very adequate. It doesn't sound like a theater but it does the job nicely and I feel was a good value for the 399 sale price. The blue tooth automatically comes on after about 4 seconds when the TV is powered on. So they sync together pretty well. It would be nice if you could make adjustments via bluetooth instead of having to plug in HDMI but that's a little thing. For the price I still feel this is a 5 star value

I had a Vizio sound bar died on me and had to get a replacement. I first purchased a Samsung and then returned it because it couldn't get loud enough. I was told that's Sony is one of the best because they specialize in speakers. I purchased this one and I still find myself wanting to turn it up. Both my Samsung and my Sony cost way more than the Vizio. The Vizio was purchased about 10 years ago. The Sony and the Samsung did not get as loud as or did not have as good quality as the Vizio. I was told that they changed the technology so you had to spend a lot of money to get Superior Sound. When 10 years ago you can pay less than $200 and get a great sound bar. Today I purchase one for about $400, and it's not as good as the one from 10 years ago. Quite disappointing. Sound quality is very good though. I just hate that I find myself wanting to turn it up when playing music ordering some parts in movies, but I can't because the sound is already maxed out and tweet for Optimal Performance. I guess at this price range this is about the best you're going to get even though it is still disappointing. I would recommend this to a friend only because there's no other options except to spend a lot more money.

Was looking all over for a new soundbar. Previously had a 5.1 vizio soundbar
(VIZIO - SmartCast™ 38" 5.1-Channel Soundbar System with Subwoofer - Black)
I liked the way the vizio sounded it was perfectly fine for me. I needed something simple not super crazy. I bought the soundbar to watch movies and play games. The reason i got a new soundbar was because i needed more HDMI inputs a pass through. My number one request is a 4K HDR pass through. I've seen the adapters and HDMI Hubs but trust me these do not pass full 4K HDR or dolby vision. The only solution was getting a soundbar that does that same.
The reason why i went Sony is because i bought a Sony 930E 65in TV. We all know how great Sony works with one another so i decided to stick with Sony. I have had pretty good luck with them. I was nervous in the beginning not having dedicated back speakers. I'm used to the Vizio's 2 back Satellite speakers.
Long story short. This is a great soundbar! I am literally in Awe of this soundbar. Playing a video game like God of War brings the game to life. Every sound and explosion just shakes the entire house. Amazing Sub and sound quality is superb. The HDMI pass through works great! I can control the soundbar and have a 4K UHD player connected. Both can be chosen and the soundbar, UHD player and TV can all be controlled through one remote! AMAZING how Sony works together. I would highly recommend this soundbar. The 2 back speakers of the Vizio did not matter when compared to this Sony soundbars vertical surround sound. Don't hesitate to get this soundbar you will not be disappointed!

Awesome sound bar, but having a few connection issues occasionally which never happens on my Samsung. About 2-3 times since I have bought this speaker, I have to restart it because it won't connect with my Sony x900f by unplugging and re-connecting. There are also some strange noises that come through when we change inputs on the tv. However, I think this is related to the tv model software- not the soundbar.

I recently bought this sound system along with a Sony X900F screen. I've had it for about a month and tried different styles of audio (music, movies, podcasts, streaming, etc) with this sound system and, for the most part, it sounds great. The low-end is respectable (though you can bottom out the sub with bass heavy music at high levels), mids are great (that is expected), and highs are okay (this is where it is the weakest - you will have to tweak some settings to make sure you don't get that "being in a box" sound). For the price, this is a great system. I have one gripe though - the system has no real way of letting you know whether you've changed a setting (it only has flashing lights). Luckily, the system integrates well with the TV, so it isn't that huge of a deal, but it wouldn't kill Sony to add a screen on the speaker so you can see what the setting are. Like I said in the title - you get what you pay for, and this system, in my opinion, is worth the amount you will pay.

I recently purchased a 65" Sony from Best Buy and have been extremely happy with the exception of the weak sound from the downward facing speakers. This is not to say the Sony TV is inferior as all flat screen TVs have this problem. Adding the soundbar has made all the difference in the world. The sound now fills the room and I no longer have a problem hearing dialogue even without wearing my hearing aids. Setup was easy and the interface with the TV was automatic.

I purchased as an open box item. I had been watching this speaker for some time but did not want to spend what it cost when it first came out. This speaker was made to pair with the Sony X900F which I also own. I also bought the speaker to experience Dolby Atomos. One of the determining factors for the quality of sound from the speakers will be determined by the size of the room you are using the speaker in. The room I have the tv and sound bar set up in is my office space and it is not that large. With that being said, the sound is great once you play around with the sound bar settings and set it to your preferences. The sound bar integrates with my tv and allows me to control its advanced settings through the tv menu. I watched Avenger End Game using it. The sound from the battle scene at the end in Dolby Atomos sound epic. I have always been a fan of Sony. The speaker does not disappoint.
