My motivation for purchasing this phenomenal Sony XBR 4K OLED A1E 55'inch tv was because I needed to upgrade to take full advantage of my new XBOX ONE X Scorpio Edition video game console that plays select games in 4K & HDR. I've had a long history with Sony tv's from a CRT 1080i 46'inch to a XBR6 1080p 52'inch tv. Though Sony high end televisions are more expensive than the competition I have been willing to pay for peace of mind and a well built tv. The features and design of this Sony OLED are exceptional. The screen is breathtaking when viewing 4K HDR content. Streaming in 4K is one thing, but watching a movie on a 4K Ultra HD disc is another story. I wall mounted my tv, even though the sexy one of it's kind self stand it tempting. I would recommend to anyone that wants the best of the best of the best of the best. It's a pricey tv, but worth every penny if you're looking for a high end OLED. There's no comparison to any other format.

I've been working around - and loving - consumer audio and video products for nearly twenty years. Sony's A1E OLED is my favorite product to date. Everything positive you've read about this television is true, so I won't go into it all here. Ok...Yes, it uses an LG panel, but don't dismiss the importance of video processing (something Sony does brilliantly on this television). With regard to industrial design...sure, many criticize the slightly angled, easel-like form factor. For me that was a selling point. I wanted a television that was both stunning to watch and beautiful to look at when powered off. Shortly after buying the A1E, an artist friend of mine came to my house...unprompted, he said, "Wow. That thing looks like a sculpture." I agree! I've placed it quite low to the ground on a concrete/glass-resin "television bench" just 13 inches off the floor (if you're curious, search for the Lyon-Beton MONOBLOC television bench). I love the way it blends into the decor of my room. And watching HDR 4K films from my Oppo UDP-205? Wow! Unparalleled. Treat yourself to one of the most stunning televisions ever made...and enjoy!

I picked up my 55" on Easter Monday 2017 and have been testing it all week. To be honest, I've never seen anything like it! Let's start with the design even though it's subjective. The A1E has very minimalistic design. It seems Sony looked to a Bauhaus design credo when designing the set i.e. "form follows function". Sony obviously wants you to focus on the picture and the picture only. That's why there is virtually no bezel. In fact there is virtually no bulk to the TV. The TV disappears behind the screen. The stand is very well designed, heavy and solidly built. You will never feel like the TV is going to tip over. The connections are thoughtfully designed and cable management is fantastic with clips that keep cables together just below where they connect to the TV on the rear stand. The angle on the screen is so minimal that I barely noticed. As far as picture quality is concerned, it's the best I've seen since the days of the Pioneer Kuro plasma's. This TV has picture quality that rivals and in some cases surpasses those Plasma's. The motion processing of the TV and it's 4k upscale capability far surpasses any LG OLED I have ever scene. HD sources are beautifully upscaled but I would say that one definitely needs to calibrate the TV in order to get the best out of it. I also have a 4K PVR at home and Broadcast 4K looks phenomenal, especially sports. Netflix 4k UHD and Amazon Prime 4k UHD also look amazing. I tested "The Grand Tour" on Amazon Prime, the episode where they are in dune buggies in Namibia and it felt like I was there. I also tested out an Alien Bluray 4k transfer which is probably one of the best contrast torture tests you can give a TV. All I can say is it was phenomenal. As far as sound is concerned the TV has fantastic sound out of the box. While I use a Sonos Playbar setup, I did still test the sound out the speakers of the TV initially. I was shocked. The soundstage from the acoustic surface speakers is surprisingly large. Secondly it actually feels like noise is coming out of the characters mouths on this TV instead of from a speaker below. So all in all I would say that Sony has hit it out of the park for their first OLED. I am ecstatic. This is my first jump into 4K and into OLED and I won't be looking back. No regrets at spending the money.

I've had this TV about 2 months and it has been the best TV I have ever owned. The picture quality on this set is just stunning. The blacks and contrast levels are amazing. The sound on this set (sound comes from the screen and there is a 4" subwoofer built into the stand) is more than good enough for my living room. It has the best sound I have ever heard from TV speakers. I was looking between this set and the Sony 940 series. The 940 series is a little brighter, but the blacks and contrasts of the OLED more than make the trade-off worth it. The only complaint that I have, and it is a small one, is that the remote sensor is on the bottom of the screen. I have to raise the remote a little because my TV stand has a little lip to prevent the TV from sliding forward. If you have a smooth TV stand, this should not be an issue for you.

Pros: Picture quality Design Sound Processing Dolby Vision ITU-R BT.2020 HLG HDR 10 Cons: Brightness Price Android OS is slow tho customization helps. Remote For me, the pros outweigh the cons I was ready to jump in and stat saving for 8k. I work in the hotel industry and see a lot of issues with LG TVs. I know it’s an LG screen, but the electronics are Sony and I trust it. The Sony tax is something I’ve grown used to and rarely do I regret a purchase.

I did a lot of research before deciding to buy the Sony A1E Oled. While the brightness is not as high as Samsung Qled tvs, the blacks are perfect and colors are amazing. This tv has an unconventional design, tilting a bit if placed on an entertainment stand but it's easy to get used to the minor tilt. It has every HDR mode I need (gaming on PS4 pro and Xbox One S has never looked better). The A1E uses Android TV which isn't as smooth as my previous Samsung tv's smart features but I haven't been too disappointed. The sound is unique and is way better than most tvs' built-in speakers; so far I have not needed a surround sound system. Overall: perfect picture, amazing HDR, and great sound.

Since this is an OLED TV, you get brilliant, life-like colors with perfect, absolute blacks which creates excellent contrast ratio. You also get a wider viewing angle compared to LED/LCD TVs so no matter where you're sitting, you get excellent picture quality. The only downside is that it's not as bright as LED/LCD TVs. In terms of features, this TV has plenty (it even has voice control). It operates on Android so there are plenty of apps to be downloaded from the Google Play store. It also has Chrome Cast built in so you can cast a variety of content to the TV. The only issue I have with the Android operating system is that it can be slow and laggy at times. In terms of picture quality, this TV can't be beat. There are a variety of pre-set picture modes to choose from to suit the content you're watching. Cinema Pro delivers the most accurate picture but it's best viewed in a darkened room (for daytime viewing or brighter rooms, Cinema Home can be used). For sports, I've watched several basketball games using the Sports picture mode and although it provides a very good viewing experience, it tends to add artifacts or edge enhancements (especially during fast-moving plays). It's nothing jarring but you do notice it if you look closely. Gaming on this TV is also excellent. It is suggested that you hook up your console to HDMI ports 2 or 3 since these ports have Enhanced HDR for gaming. Personally, I didn't experience any lag input issues at all. Sound quality on this TV is also excellent. It's also innovative in the fact that the TV itself is the speaker. Like the pre-set picture modes, there are also pre-set sound modes to suit what you're watching, such as sports, cinema, music, etc. Most people don't know about this so I'm pointing this out. Overall, I highly recommend this TV. Given it's picture quality, innovative design, and features, you can't go wrong.

4K is sharp but other aspects leave me wanting

I am coming off a 13-year love affair with my 42" Sony plasma, and considered that a best-in-breed product, reflecting its strong forward-facing speakers and outstanding HD pictures reflecting exactly what I would expect to see if I were in the control room of my favorite TV network. This is important because the Sony OLED has a clear-as-day picture, which is only limited by the lack of readily-available 4K content, and an "intelligent" display that steps in - between the viewer and the content provider - to "adapt" or "perfect" the image in order to deliver what the screen determines to be the ideal picture given the source materials. This generally works well, unless you're like me and have been watching the same programs for years, so you know every color of every graphic, logo, network ID and bug, and know that the TV is changing the colors to be deeper reds, darker blacks, brighter blues, and whiter whites. At first, I thought the picture was worse, but ultimately rationalized that that the TV is trying to help, and that there isn't much I can do about it (unless I return the set). Furthermore, the set has an ambient light detector, which makes the screen dimmer unless the screen is in direct sunlight. I think this may be why the colors are darker than I would expect, but when I turn off the sensor, the screen is too bright (and calls to Sony requesting the "ideal" settings to deliver what the producer intended were politely unanswered "I don't have that in my resources", the agent said). When it comes to audio, my 13-year old plasma was better too, because the speakers on this screen are smaller, and thus what used to be a volume of 16 or 22 on the plasma is now a 26 or 33 on the OLED. The result was an initial setup that left voices too soft, and the dispersion of the audio too wide for the room, owing to a variety of settings that pretend to mimic a theater, a sporting event and other venues or sound arrays. I found that setting the Dolby to "Compressed" and acoustic style to "Standard" seems to make the sound louder, but I have had to boost the volume to recreate the sound levels of the front-facing speakers. The whole selling point about the sound appearing to come from the character's position on screen was lost on me -- either because I don't have content that uses the feature or because I can't tell where the sound comes from when I watch the TV from 6' away. As far as the Android technology built into the set, the menu structure is nice but there are quite a few "featured" channels that are pre-positioned in the top of my Home screen. I would like to get ride of the ones I don't care about (but apparently I can't). I do like downloading apps that interest me, but many are also available on my Apple TV. I would note that the TV seems like a battlefield between Sony, Google and Apple because the same movie is available from Google and Apple, at different prices (even at the same 4K resolution - check out Spider-Man Homecoming, for example.) The remote on the Sony is excellent, but I wish it had backlit buttons and a page up/down button for scanning the program guide. On the positive side, I must acknowledge the high-resolution of the screen exceeds the content on my HD cable operator, so I can't wait for more 4K content to become available. i would only watch 4K content if I had the option...the pictures are stunning. I will also add that my unit is wall-mounted (unlike my prior plasma) and I still catch myself looking at the sleek design with amazement, and the rich black levels are beyond excellent. Overall, I call the set Good for its rich blacks, sharp pixels and amazing design, but intelligent colors (said to be a feature) leave me wondering if I'm watching what the producer, graphic artist/art director and cinematographer intended, and the audio is underpowered for such a large set. I would have bought a sound bar if I hadn't blown the budget on the set itself.

Having owned both Sony and Samsung models since the arrival of HD, I can say that this model is by far the best picture I have ever seen on a TV. The blacks are rich and dark, the colors vibrant. With the 4k content available, this is truly a joy to watch. Best Buy does have deals so make sure to check! Downside is that it is expensive, and Sony fans have come to expect this with the high end TVs. The experts seemed to love this model, and I know why.

Let me begin by noting that I have always been a fan of Sony TVs. Our first TV was a Sony Trinitron. This TV replaces a Sony Bravia TV. The reason for the upgrade was purely based on technology format support (UHD). Bravia TV stills works excellent. Sony has long stood for quality TVs. This OLED TV is completely breathtaking in picture quality and sound. This is coming from viewing cable TV content Star Wars movie. At first I wasn’t sold on the kickstand concept, but once I got the TV installed on our BDI stand and turned it on, I was so impressed with the audio quality and it is quite elegant looking. Certainly different than anything else I’ve seen. Yes, the price is a bit higher than Samsung, but this TV is superior in my comparisons. The purchasing experience with Bestbuy was excellent. I purchased this online and then drove approximately 1 hr to pick it up at a Magnolia Store. I could have waited to have it delivered to my local B.B., but we wanted this for Thanksgiving weekend. Approximately one month later, I couldn’t be happier with this purchase. Purchase the TV and don’t look back, I am also a big fan of B.B. I did not buy this sight unseen. I reviewed the TV at the Magnolia Store before I actually picked it up. Seeing that TV along side the other brands is really something you should see for yourself.

Exceptional craftsmanship went into this television, which not only produces stunning and vivid colors, but the picture is so awesome that it makes normal TV images look like works of art. Because of the kickstand and the sleek design, the television itself looks, when turned off, like a piece of art. Pricer than most competitors but it’s a high end Sony and I never had issues with Sony products. The plug and play and set up was a breeze, especially for those who are less tech savvy like me.

The television itself is amazing. Great picture. Great sound. It makes watching TV a pleasure. At this point I am watching very little 4K programming, but everything looks good. It is also the largest TV I have ever had in this room, but watching close up is not a problem. It looks sharp, not grainy. The smart TV functions are however, poor. The choice of Android TV was a bad choice. I wish Sony had gone for Roku TV. I still need my old Roku stick. First, Android TV doesn't support all the apps I use. You might expect any Android app would work, but they are not available unless they have been specifically modified for Android TV. DirectTV Now and The Great Courses are two apps I need to use on my Roku. Seocnd, the interface is terrible. You cannot customize the display very much and it is cluttered with all sorts of things I don't want. There is no way to delete them, hide them, or move them out of the way. I have to scroll though 10 or 20 useless apps to get to one I want. Once I get to an app, it works fine, but this is a pretty dumb version of a smart TV. The other big problem is the user manual contains almost no information and Sony provides very little online help. The initial setup is very easy, but after that they don't provide much information. I still love the TV, but a device this good deserves a better user interface and support. Will my next OLED be another Sony or an LG? I am not sure.

I had a hard time making a choice between this Sony, and the LG, until i put in the effort (and had some luck) to find a location where both were displayed side by side. The sony had a far better store demo, which showed off the OLED capabilities to great effect. Every other tv I have ever owned, took days worth of fiddling to tweek the picture “just so”. This tv, largely because of the OLED tech, took 15 minutes. The black levels, and thus the overall quality of picture, are unmatched. Worth every penny.

The picture and specs, as well as the design of this UHD 4K HDR TV are what drew me to it and for the most part it does not disappoint. I love the physical design and look of the tv, and if anyone is concerned about the slight slant backward if using it on a TV stand, don't be, as it does not affect your viewing at all. Do be mindful though, of the TV's measurements and to have a stand that is not just long enough, but deep enough (I had to purchase a new stand to go with this). The sound is excellent after tweaking it to your liking and native 4k content looks fantastic, also, after some tweaking. Some other content is not as perfect, particularly, older lower res content, but I'm still playing with it to try to get things better. SONY is finally pushing a promised Dolby Vision update later this month, and I'm hoping that also helps. All in all, I'm really digging this TV and enjoying watching content on it. And I don't feel I even need to use a sound bar with it.

This is by far, the best TV I have ever owned! This is a top-of-the-line model from Sony from 2017. It has everything a video enthusiast would want - pitch erfect blacks, high refresh rates, Dolby Vision, HDR 10, etc. Although this TV isn't as bright as an LED TV, it has a superior picture because of the infinite contrast ratio.

Note: 1) Do not forget to use those little blue rubber like corner pieces if you attempt to wall mount TV. You will place on the corners of the lower edge of the TV. This will keep the edge off a hard surface (i.e. floor ). This is perhaps one of the best accessory they included for set up! 2) If you are wall mounting don't use the two screws that are used for the easel mount (will not be using the weighted bottom and strut. You will need to use these two screws to set the "easel" in closed position. I believe the basic set instructions could have been written a lot better. Be forewarned this is only your "basic set up". In my opinion, you then have to go thru the entire menu to calibrate to "your own needs". Sony could have done better job providing advice on calibrating. Note: You can access a robust User Manual (online) but you can't really download since there are links embedded within the User Manual...I hope most will understand what I mean. I actually got more from reviewing YouTube postings on calibrating. Please be aware that these postings are not Sony approved and "mileage may vary" with each posting. Color calibration was challenging. Pay attention to the "color saturation" and "gain settings" + brightness and contrast. Is it easy? No, I took the better part of an afternoon to calibrate. Tips: I recorded a Fox News segment since they use red and blues in their backdrop. I made sure there were two individuals in the recorded segment so I could also set skin tones in line with the color saturation, color gain, brightness, contrast etc. by having the segment played, rewound and played again you'll get there. Be patient. As I had mentioned the Fox News was great for red, blue and skin tone. I then went to the Golf Channel to set my "greens". I made sure they were covering a golf tournament. Don't be disgusted with the over saturation of "green"....you can adjust this! I don't like the bogus settings (i.e. Hawaii 5-O over saturates greens). Record a segment of a fairway and putting green...back and forth to set the green saturation and gain, etc. Once you are satisfied you can "lock your settings". However, I would create a written list of all your settings. Now, on to the TV. 55" was a bit larger than our older 9 year old Bravia I had to get use to the frameless TV design and my eyes adapting to the change in my field of view. Audio has been properly set as a "wall mount" (you will need to do this in your settings!) and you will notice a the audio projection coming from the screen...very full bodied. When viewing at an angle while sitting at my table / desk ~ 45 degrees or from the kitchen...you don't loose clarity at all. Hence, no altering the wall mount angle. That should be about it....great TV...less than par on the basic set up and User Guide (whatever happend to "Quick Start Guides"?)

Had bought two LG of same size and features but BOTH failed within days of purchase. Decided to spend the money to get the Sony. The picture is insanely beautiful, the sound quality is awesome and it has NOT failed. Only 'complaint' is the stand - it is funky looking and way to wide for my TV stand - going to mount it on wall as planned so not really an issue.
