To date the purchase of this blue-ray player has been very rewarding, the device that this blu-ray player replace was not as smart as this smart device actually is. I would highly recommend this device.

Yes, it does a wonderful job in playing blu rays and making them look great. But it has significant problems if you like to use the Vudu and Ultraviolet services. In all Vudu movies I experience a screen asking for my UV account about 2/3rds of the way through. Sony doesn't have a UV app and so you're stuck. Also Sony's customer service is the worst I've ever experienced. Check out Sony's customer support before you ever buy one of their products. You want a good blu ray player? This is it.

SONY BDPS6500 purchased June 11. I need to get the cosmetic issues out of the way first. This player has the aesthetic appeal of a scotch-tape dispenser. Small, light-weight, bland plastic, no display at all, and a generally cheap feel. It’s hard to imagine sophisticated technology having less visual appeal. Ugh. I previously owned a SONY S6200 with occasional issues. Often my AVR wouldn’t properly recognize the 6200 input without fussing with both units. Getting a good DVD display was difficult and streaming was ordinary on a good day.
Now, on to more important issues for this new S6500: performance is very high for Blu-Ray (regular and 3D), older DVDs as well as streaming. The images from all modern Blu-Rays, projected onto a 120” screen using a J** X500r projector, are spectacular. They are colorful, finely detailed, without any artifacts, and accompanied by great sound. This is an exceptional quality player by any image and sound quality measure.
Initial setup has its issues. DO NOT try to use this player without first connecting it to the internet and installing the firmware updates. My unit hung on its 1st Blu-ray and I needed to convince it to restart and eject. After the upgrade, most glitches were corrected. Setting are also a potential source of frustration. My first DVDs had no menus at all and a variety of glitches. A few changes in the settings (screen format NORMAL) corrected lost menus and (forced 1080/24p resolution) fixed my HDMI recognition issues. Not at all intuitive, but I had been ready to return my player until I stumbled onto these fixes.
Video streaming was interesting. I’ve had problems getting high quality video. Low resolution, soft blurry images all made my experience very poor. With this player, I thought it was as bad or even worse. BUT WAIT . . . WAIT . . . WAIT . . . and before your eyes, like magic, the image visibly improves over the next 40-60 seconds until it is extremely close to the highest resolution I’ve seen from a streaming service. Go figure. I’ve not tested any other service, but something odd . . . but great . . . is going on here. And it happened with absolute repeatability. I wish the experience was perfect from the get-go, but I’m now a fan of streaming.
The remote is cute, small, but easy to use despite not being back-lit. I like the very useful submenu under OPTIONS on the remote. Here you can select to adjust your 3D effects and depth. I also use this feature to modify my VIDEO settings for special situations. Here I can brighten my image (especially useful when displaying 3D images which are darkened by 3D shutter glasses) or modify brightness and contrast on older, low quality DVDs. Changes can be stored under Custom1&2 settings (as long as you DO NOT have 4K resolution output set when you initially set-up your player).
Bottom line: If you can get passed the least attractive AV design to come out of SONY, a very problematic startup/setup process, the S6500 is a very high performing Blu-Ray player.

After buying one for the living room, purchased this to replace an older 3d model that was getting a little long in the tooth(I paid over 400.00 for)! This little unit does more and costs much less than the original Panasonic it replaces. I like how many apps this has packed in as well as the upscaling picture quality. Having a 4k tv, this is currently one of the best and most reasonable ways to appreciate the picture,( 3D is remarkable). So far no complaints on the 2 I have.

I bought this to accompany our Vizio 4K TV. I bought it because Sony's upscaling algorithm is the best in the industry. But, since the 2015 Sonys use an Android operating system, that is getting terrible reviews, I decided to get this DVD player to get the benefit of Sony's software on the Vizio. It works fantastically. I have old regular DVD's, other regular DVD's and newer Blu Ray DVD's. They look great. The upscaling is amazing. For less than $130, this is a no brainer. Since the Sony TV is $600 more expensive than the Vizio, this makes sense. The DVD player is very small. Cannot say enough about it. The only issue I had was that some older DVD's shrink the screen on the top and bottom, so the picture is squished. The only way to remedy it is to change the picture size from Full to NORMAL. That makes the screen get really small, but it is in the normal aspect ratio. It is basically worthless and I just won't watch those older DVD's on this TV.

I had a very old samsung blue ray player (didnt even have built in wify). It was time to replace. So went to best buy on black friday to pick up the latest 4k up scaling blue ray player. They were out of the samsung so i went for this sony which was a little more $ but i'm impressed with how compact they have made these things. Its about half the size of my first and half the weight. built in wify, and online services. It was very easy to set up. Now with smart tv's, some of the services are overkill but i'll start to explore and see what it has to offer. overall, very satisfied at this point.

After having the Panasonic BDT230, I was pretty happy w/ its features but its lagginess was frustrating and learned quickly that it didnt like to be rushed. I started looking at the S6200, but I'm glad I waited as this S6500 seems to be a decent improvement over the older model. Its not as quick as a decent PC, but it is massively better than the 230.
My main complaint would be its lack of available apps, such as HBOgo, but the ones that are there work well.
I believe that $40 entry level bluray players have made mid and high level players seem unnecessarily expensive, but a quick and responsive smart 3D player w/ good wifi abilities, a great picture, is easy to use and actually works as intended - is worth the price.

I bought this Blu-ray player to pair with our new Vizio 4k TV primarily for the upscaling. It also comes with 3D capabilities, but I do not use those as I don't own a 3D TV. That being said, the upscaling is very good. My Vizio 4k TV has a built in upscaler, but I wasnt sure which would reign supreme in terms of scaling, the TV or the player. Both the TV and Blu-ray player do upscaling very well, if not the same. For my blu-rays, the player will do the scaling, for everything else, i.e. chromecast, anything else non-4k plugged into the TV, the TV upscales it beautifully. As for the apps on the player, they all work well. I've has one case where the player froze up, but I re-booted with no problems since. I'd recommend routinely getting software updates when available. One interesting feature I'm planning on trying is the Playstation Now addition to this line of BR players. I wish I had tried this sooner to add to this review. From what I hear, it's best to connect this directly to the router if your going to use it. This blu-ray player does not have WiFi AC, which I think would be bare minimum to stream games via WiFi; of course your internet connection from ISP has to be very strong as well. I have a 60mbps connection that is realistically about 45mbps and all apps work just fine. I have it plugged into my routers gigabit port, avoiding potential WiFi issues for larger bandwidth items.

I own a 4k television but not a 4k player. Sounds silly, I know, but my old tv broke down and I just went ahead and future proofed by buying a 4k set. Although I've seen some stuff streamed on Netflix in 4K resolution, I felt like a wasn't getting the full experience. The thing is, 4k players and the blu-rays themselves are really expensive right now. So I looked at this sony player that up converts regular blurays to 4k -like resolution and I have to say I'm impressed. I now can see what my tv can do. Movies look gorgeous and very high definition. I recommend this player as a half step towards waiting till 4k player prices come down. It makes regular blurays look fantastic, and the unit is inexpensive so you don't feel like you wasted money when you replace it down the road. Also very tiny in size, plus comes loaded with popular Apps. A good value all around.

This is a great blu-ray player for the price. It upscales to 4K quite nicely and it is easy to setup. It comes loaded with numerous apps, however, I mainly use Netflix and Hulu. It boots up and loads blu-ray discs fairly quickly even without the "quick start" option turned on. The interface can be a tad sluggish in response time, but it isn't a deal breaker by any means. I would definitely purchase again if I needed another blu-ray player.

Purchased this player for the bedroom tv. It's not a 4K tv so I can't address the 4k capabilities. I have owned other Sony players in the past. I like the compact size. The 1080p picture is excellent. Sony has also improved the wi-fi of earlier models. I liked this one so much, that I purchases another. Overall, very happy with both.
