Customers have good things to say about the BRAVIA CAM's camera quality, video chat functionality, proximity alert, and privacy cover. The camera's ability to physically block the lens, the high-quality video and photo capturing capabilities, and the thoughtful design of the proximity alert for maintaining a safe viewing distance are particularly praised. However, some customers have expressed concerns about the inconsistent performance of the gesture control feature.

Unboxing: When I took it out of the box, it came with a USB C adapter, some paperwork and the camera itself in a eco-friendly box.
Setting it up was super easy, I plugged it in, and the Sony TV immediately brought up the message “Set up Bravia Cam.” I went through the process. It Was super easy, like 5 total clicks as I navigated through the set up.
The build quality of this camera is outstanding, which you would hope it would be given the premium price you are going to pay. The camera has a little slide on top to physically cover the camera lens, which is good for people who are privacy-minded when they are not using the TV.
Using the camera was a cool experience. It walks you through a tutorial how to turn off the tv with your hand and media controls/volumes. The clarity on the webcam is pretty good, but it definitely has a premium tax since it is Sony.; it is not top-of-the-line quality in the world of webcams but good enough for its purpose. When you get more than 5 feet away, it will really struggle to track your hand gestures, so it is best used in a small viewing area unless you get up to go in front of the TV to do it, but at that point, using your remote makes a whole lot more sense.
Features as of July 16, when this camera was initially reviewed: Hand Gesture: Hand gestures let you control media play by showing your palm, and it brings a little UI pop up where to move your hand, to power off the TV show palm, and then close hand. The second feature is keep distance; in case you have like a kid or something, it will give a little pop-up on the bottom saying keep distance if you continue to ignore it, it covers your screen, saying once again Keep distance, and then will talk to you saying it, and your screen eventually goes black. This is great if you have any wild toddlers around who may threaten to walk the TV with their Tonka truck, hah! The third feature is Eco Save Sensing, which uses the camera to see if there is any movement or anybody in the area to keep the TV on, if not at a set time you choose, it will dim the TV after an amount of time and turn off sooner if no one is around.
Overall, I would give this camera a 3/5 for most average users and a 4/5 for Sony fans, since this does fit seamlessly into the Sony TV ecosystem experience and offers some cool tricks and features that, if nothing else, serve as great parlor tricks to show you friends when they come over for movie night. Thanks for reading this review and I hope it has helped with you purchase decision!

A Great addition to my Sony BRAVIA 9 TV

I got the Sony BRAVIA CAM Model (CMU-BC1) and have been impressed with its performance and cool features. Let me explain further:
The design is clean, sleek and compact, and the quality is great. It is a perfect addition to my 75 Sony BRAVIA TV and it is compatible with other 2022, 2023 and 2024 Sony TVs so make sure it is compatible first.
The setup is easy, make sure your TV is up to date with its software, place the camera on top of the TV and open the lens cover, connect to the TV using the USB cable then finally on the TV access and turn on the BRAVIA CAM. The Camera comes with cable holders so you can manage the cable and I really like that it has a built-in camera cover for added privacy, which is a nice touch.
One nice feature from this camera is its ability to optimize both picture and sound based on your position in the room. The Bravia Cam recognizes where you are and adjusts the TV's brightness and sound settings accordingly. I can also choose for it to emphasize on the voice. All of this ensures that you always get the best viewing experience, no matter where you are sitting. And I can see and hear it working when I move around the room.
AS for the video Chat capabilities, the BRAVIA CAM also allows for video chatting on the big screen, which is a fantastic feature for staying connected with friends and family. The Full HD (1080p) resolution ensures clear and crisp video quality.
We do not have children at the house but when they come over to visit, the proximity alert feature is a nice addition; it helps maintain an acceptable viewing distance by displaying a notification “keep viewing distance” if someone gets too close to the TV and it will not turn off until you get further back.
Overall, the Sony BRAVIA CAM 2024 (CMU-BC1) enhances the viewing experience significantly. Its ability to adjust settings based on room dynamics and its additional features like video chat and Proximity Alert make it a worthwhile companion for the selected Sony BRAVIA TV owners.

I consider that an improvement to our devices does not cause anything wrong and more if it is our TV. The Sony Bravia Cam adds some features that might be useful for some users.
In the box comes the camera with its usb cable, an installation guide and warranty. The camera comes ready to connect to the tv via usb and it is necessary to enter the tv settings to add and configure the device to your liking. The Bravia Cam has a lens cover that provides a layer of security. It has a discreet, minimalist design and can be easily attached to the TV.
Despite being an addiction that could improve the experience of using the tv, there are some aspects that leave much to be desired. It's nice to use your hand to control your tv but the hand gesture function is not the most accurate and seems to have a delay, sometimes it doesn't respond or recognize the gesture. I think to consider this feature as a replacement for the remote control is very premature. While the system tries to improve the sound and image depending on where the person watching the TV is, when it comes to watching TV with more people or in situations where there are more people at home, I think it is a function that is not required much. The proximity function could also be useful for some people who have small children at home, as it displays an on-screen warning and also plays an audio proximity warning. The video call function serves its purpose, the audio is loud and clear as well as the image, although it is a function that I think may not be used constantly.
Overall, while the camera helps control some aspects of the TV, such as brightness depending on whether or not it detects motion, sound adjustment by positioning, proximity alert and video chat, I do not consider it an essential device although it has potential. The price is not bad so I would recommend this product to those who have a Sony Bravia TV and want to add some features that can enhance the experience.

First Impressions - The camera was received well packed and includes an attached LONG usb cord
with strick on clips for a neat cable run to the USB port. I have a Bravia 7 series so I installed
and was left with two loops of extra USB cord. This was easy to tuck away behind the television.
The total install took me about ten minutes.
Daily use -
The camera works well for Zoom calls and gesture based controls. The dual mic arrangement
picks up sound well from a variety of positions in the room. The video quality is equal
to more expensive units I have used for conferencing.
Ambient picture and audio adjustment -
This feature works well for general television use - i.e. watching shows and movies. I disabled
it for playing darker video games as the brighness or saturation was too low in a dim to dark room.
The audio adjustments made do improve audio based on the user's position. I expect that this may
improve with software updates.
What I love -
Light sensativity excellent - great in a dim room
Gesture control is neat !
Ability to physically block lens built in
Room for improvement -
Allow for bottom installation with inverted camera unit.

First and foremost make sure you have the compatible TV that goes with this camera. I’m used to having a webcam for my monitor/computer but that screen is only so big. So this camera and mic is a game changer for our 55 inch television. I use google meet for our family meetings which means we get to see our family in person and since our family is big, the bigger screen is perfect. I wear glasses but don’t need them when I’m able to use our big television. That is literally the biggest pro. And my family feels closure to us because they are in the living room with us. Lol
And sometimes I forget that we are in our living room and everyone on google meet sees everything but because there is no zoom feature I feel a little far away which is one drawback. No matter how good your TV is you will look small compared to where you are in your room.
Overall the experience is better than viewing on a monitor camera. If everything is within 12 feet you should be able to have a good experience with this camera. TV settings should be adjusted according to your lighting to get the best visibility and picture/video. It’s pretty straightforward and there are plenty of youtube videos to help walk you through the use.

Sleek camera for enhanced experience

The Sony Bravia camera is an intriguing addition to your existing Bravia TV. While it may not be essential for every TV in your home, it offers unique functionality that I feel is best suited for your home's primary television.
Here are the key features and considerations:
1. Enhanced Bravia Experience: The camera aims to enhance your Bravia experience, and it succeeds to a certain extent. Notably, it automatically adjusts display brightness and sound based on your location in the room. This feature proves especially useful for larger TVs.
2. Auto-Dimming: One standout feature, and probably my favorite, is auto-dimming. When the camera detects that no one is in the room, it dims the screen or even shuts off the TV. However, a less appealing proximity notification activates ff you get too close to the TV. This notification morphs into a large display and obscures the screen. Thankfully, you can permanently disable this in the settings.
3. Simple Setup: Setting up the Bravia Cam is straightforward. Plug it in and navigate to your remote settings—the TV should detect the camera for configuration.
4. Video Chat Emphasis: The camera places significant emphasis on video chat and calls. It’s ideal for family conversations—think grandparents and siblings. However, for business calls that involve manipulating charts and graphs, it falls short. I don't see myself getting much use out of the video chat functionality for this reason, as I typically need to be at my computer for business calls.
While learning about my Bravia Camera, I came across a claim that the Bravia camera can also double as a computer webcam. After testing on several computers, I can confirm this is not the case, as none of my computers recognized the camera.
I think the most obvious feature, which doesn't exist, is use of monitoring security or children through Google Home/Nest. All compatible Sony Bravia's have Google T.V. integrated into the software. The logical direction should be to utilize this capability with Google Home, and allow the camera to double as a security or child monitoring device. As it stands, Google T.V. when placed in a "Kid's Profile" will disable any output ports, including USB and HDMI. This feature currently cannot be overridden, and is a significant obstacle, as it prevents the camera from operating if your Bravia is in a Google Kid's Profile." I would love to connect this camera to my existing Google Home account, and attach it to my child's Bravia as a monitoring device.
Overall, I think it’s a very neat camera, and a great design for the right person. However, I don’t believe it’s a must have for every Bravia, but rather, a niche enhancement device that is best suited for the primary television.

Novel way to control the TV - and it works!

I got lucky! My Sony Bravia TV fell within the parameters of this additional Sony Bravia Camera, being one of the first 4K TVs to be able to work with this camera (it's a 2023 model TV).
Opening the box (the packaging is all made from recyclable material) you get a USB power cord, the camera, and additional base adapter and some instructions. It's very intuitive to place the camera on top of the TV and the mount is designed to essentially 'grab' the top of the TV, so you don' have any worries about the camera falling off - and the TV shouldn't be in a place that it can get bumped or knocked around anyways. The USB cable can remain cinched up, just released about a foot worth of cable each side (in my case, with my Sony Bravia TV) and you can reach the USB port with the camera still mounted in the middle.
Once plugged in, the camera overrides the screen and will do a software update. Once that is complete, the camera will then take you through set up and then the operation of the camera. This is where I initially had an issue. I was able to follow the onscreen tutorial, I got to one point and then the program froze. I had to keep trying the same motion over and over. I almost threw the towel in, it was getting quite frustrating. I then decided to unplug the USB connection and cycle the TVs power on and off. Thankfully that did it, and the rest of the tutorial has been flawless.
Now with the camera installed, I can pause any video, be it Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max etc by raising my palm and moving my hand to the left. I can play the program again, raising my hand and moving it to the right. Similarly, raising the palm of my hand up and down raises and lowers the volume. Using your pointer finger, raised in the air allows you to change channel and skip parts of your program. Raising your palm and making a fist enables you to power off the TV.
I now use the power off feature every night and it has been working flawlessly. Initial set up installation issues aside, this is working really well and has become quite intuitively! There is also a feature I've set up where if someone walks too close to the TV, it pauses the show, so you don't miss anything. Thankfully no-one has triggered that function yet!
Overall, what seemed to be somewhat gimmicky has actually turned into something useful, and I use it every single day since installing! It works well, it's unobtrusive, you can shut off the camera if you want to. So far I'm loving it!

Promising Idea, Disappointing Execution for the $$

The concept is great, but the execution is just okay. I have a 70” Bravia 8, and we sit about 15–20 feet away from the TV. When trying to make a video call, we couldn’t zoom the camera, so we looked like ants to the other person. On top of that, the camera resolution was disappointing for a $200 product.
The hand gesture controls seem to have been designed and tested against a solid white background because they’re almost useless in real-world conditions. And the feature I was most looking forward to—auto brightness adjustment—doesn’t work as expected. At night, the 70” Bravia 8 is blindingly bright, and I hoped this feature would make it more comfortable to watch. Unfortunately, it didn’t lower the brightness to a non-painful level.
For a $200 device, I expected much better performance and usability.

This little Gem takes the TV watching experience to another level. May take inexperienced customers a little patience to get up and running though, in my opinion.
Glad I got this to complete my New Set Up: X90L, STR-AN1000, Sony Wireless Subwoofer, Sony Wireless Rear Atmos Speakers, UBP-X800M2, Sony Front and Center Speakers, etc. Works as expected. Excited about possible software enhancements or Gen2 upgrades.

I sit about 13/14 feet away. It worked great at first, but now it won’t recognize my hand moving to the sides. It sees my hand, but nothing after that. It’s convenient when you’re on the couch, but can’t reach the remote, but you still need to pause or lower volume. Besides that, I have not found any other reason to get it

Great for the little kids just to have the view distance warning. When kids are too close it will show a grey screen at the bottom about viewing distance and if kids do not move back it will cover the whole screen with the grey warning and no video.
