Outstanding plot in a standard cover based shooter

Based on Heart of Darkness, the book that inspired Apocalypse Now, Spec Ops: The Line is far, far more intelligent than the standard military shooter. A competent third person shooter with some light squad tactics elements, SO:TL features some awesome set pieces and impressive physics. It relies on standard cover-based mechanics and hardly reinvents the wheel, although the sand environmental effects do add something new. Where Spec Ops really shines, however, is its plot and voice acting. Unlike CoD and Battlefield, this game explores the consequences of the fog of war, ruminating on what actions are justifiable in extreme circumstances and the toll making the wrong call can take on the human psyche. For every impressive gun fight there is a conversation leading to a nagging feeling that something is off, and while it can be heavy-handed at times Spec Ops really delivers on its source material. All in all this game rises above the glut of mindless military shooters and actually presents the consequences of shooting everything that moves. That alone makes it worth playing!

Yep, I am an older guy who plays these games. That said, I have been playing computer and game console games before a lot of the readers of this post were alive. Pong was my first game. I am no game nut but I play when I have a moment or two. Maybe a few days a month. As for this game. It seems to be one of those games which the manufacturer wanted to put out there to make a quick buck. It isn't bad but it isn't Call of Duty or Medal of Honor quality either. It is somewhat futuristic, yet based upon somewhat modern situations, with a psychological twist to the story line. It is a decent game with a semi-decent story line. Not quite as bad as a zombie story but definitely not based on a lot of realism.

A great game with a very unique storyline that keeps you interested from start to finish. The soundtrack is sweet, and the game play is perfect....not to hard, but definitely challenging. All in all, a game that stands out from the rest.

This game has a very unique story that I will not spoil for you. The enemies are a bit harder than your classic CoD AI, and the hardest difficulty, FUBAR, in my opinion, is TWO TIMES harder than CoD's Veteran difficulty. The checkpoints are fewer, your ammo is restricted, and each shot/grenade counts. You can interact with the environment, i.e shoot sand dams to flood enemies and shoot explosive barrels, or you can just go head on. The cover system is very bad in this game, you'll die half your times or more due to the bad cover. The assist system can help you with that though, because you can basically go through almost the entire story doing nothing but telling your teammates to shoot someone.

Played this game for 30 minutes and haven't picked it back up. This is not Call of Duty or Black Ops, but may be good for a beginning FPS.

Evidently, the game isn't SUPPOSED to have fun gameplay and shooting mechanics. The point is that war is hard, it's not fun, shooting people shouldn't be done for pleasure. There were definitely issues that made the gameplay difficult. It's a bit hard to control the character when moving to/from cover. But it's certainly functional, and it's not SO frustrating that I wanted to quit. There were a couple of sequences where I felt like trial and error (and perfect timing) were essential to clear a level. Granted, I was playing on a harder difficulty, but still. Then, there's the story. Get ready. It's quite good. When you go into this game, don't approach is like a Call of Duty game. This isn't a bro-shooter. You are about to experience the mental breakdown of the protagonist. Pay attention to the things you are making him do, the things that YOU are doing. In the end, you'll feel the weight of your actions. I don't know of another game that does this quite as well as Spec Ops: The Line. At this point, there's no reason to skip this one. It's worth the effort.

Spec Ops The Line is a decent game. I give it 6.5-10 rating overall, and I gathered this rating based on the first 5 levels, up to "The Edge". Below are a few things I found in the game that left a sour taste in my mouth and had me wishing I spent my money wiser. Hope it helps. CONS: 1. Audio is very poor. Gunfire sounds like a 90's Nintendo game, compared to COD franchise. 2. Pixelation all over the place. Lots of characters and game play with rigid edges and mediocre graphics. 3. No "prone" action with character...best you can do is duck your head down a couple feet. 4. Unable to customize load out...unacceptable, but I understand why as there is really no home base, or central command to get outfitted at. 5. LOADING....god forbid you die...load time is a bit excessive. 6. Controller setting selection is very minimal, and found it to be trouble some. 7. IR Tagging bad guys, for my team is pointless, cause shooting the bad guy, with a gun, requires the same amount of aim and positioning and time. Pointless function. PROS: 1. Concept. Map of Dubai (post giant sand storm) is an epic concept with killer potential. 2. Price. $30 six months after release date is a pretty good deal. 3. 3rd person experience is almost a cross between 1st person and 3rd. Really liked the user interface.
