~ STAR TREK I-IV gets the 4K treatment, finally ~

The original STAR TREK finally comes to 4K format. Although not the complete 6 movies for the original crew, this set has the first 4 in the series. I can see why they did it this way. Marketing and cost.
These movies were released from 1979 to 1986, marking STAR TREK IV to be 35 years old now. All four looking pretty good on the 4K format with improved sound in English 7.1 Dolby TrueHD.
I have an additional sound bar that the audio goes through instead of using just the TV speakers. You can hear so much more.
For picture quality, there is a difference I have noticed. If you play these back on an UHD TV with HDR, you will most likely see a difference although not groundbreaking. The most difference I saw was the The Motion Picture, particularly in the beginning scenes in space where craft are going to and around the Enterprise. I believe there was some touchup work done there for the 4K. I have the previous Blu-ray on that and it was noticeable for me.
THe movies looked really good for their age and am proud now to own this set. The packaging, well, it is okay. At least we have the discs separated in their own cases, 4K and Blu-ray versions.
Artwork is good, no artwork on the discs themselves.
Black for the 4K and standard Blue for the Blu-rays.
The 4K discs say on them that there are special features. There are NO SPECIAL FEATURES on the 4K discs. This is a misprint.
I do not count Audio Commentary as special features.
That is in the SETTINGS selection where you can pick whatever you see there for Audio.
ALL SPECIAL FEATURES for each movie are on the Blu-ray discs.
The cardboard outer shell is a bit flimsy much like that of the Indiana Jones set released earlier by Paramount.
The artwork is good, but that outer box will be tested over time for wear and tear.
All in all, a good to excellent set for the first 4 movies in the series. Hopefully, we get the other 2 sets to follow,
V, Vi, VII then VIII, IX, X. I am only assuming they will do it this way to keep the cost down for consumers, or they could do the last 6 at once.
Recommended if you really want the 4K upgrade, which is worth it to me.

Three words tell why I bought this...Wrath Of Khan. I have had several versions of this movie, including a collection on bluray of every Trek movie That I bought last year.
Couldn't resist Khan on 4k , it is the best Trek movie ever. So far I've watched it and Search for Spock, watching the fourth tonight. The picture is top drawer of course,
Surprised me how much better than the bluray, the sound is awesome, they did quite a job on it. My only beef about this collection is the usual, money wasted on bluray versions. Two plastic boxes, one for 4k and the other for bluray, why do they do this? Anyway, an incremental increase in quality over the bluray versions. Upto the individual Trekie weather or not its worth it.
It is to me.

I've watched the 4K discs of the first three movies so far. This review is of those 4K discs only. All three prints are very clear, very bright. You get a choice of the Director's Cut for TWOK or the theatrical version. There is no option for the Director's Cut of TMP. I am not a bug for extras, and there are not many on these 4K discs. The box advertises the extras as being on the Blu-Rays. You get choices for commentaries. TMP has an option for the isolated soundtrack. Most Trekkies will likely complain the most about the lack of extras being printed on the 4K discs. I prefer the studio get the main feature right and I think Paramount did in this instance.
The audio on all three sounds great. Here's the thing, though, if you do not have an honest-to-God cinema surround set up you won't notice any enhancement or improvement. I have 7.2 surround system, each piece being full-sized and the subs are 12", so yeah, everything sounds (and feels) great. If you are running a small bookshelf system or a sound bar, you aren't going to hear much difference. When I heard Ilia's Theme piping through all seven speakers on my system it took me back to the first time I saw TMP at the theater.
The key question: Is the 4-movie set worth the price? I paid $77.99, which is about $19.50 per movie. You get 4K and Blu-Ray discs plus digital codes for each of the movies. $19.50 per movie is a fair rate in the market as I write. Dedicated Trek fans with 4K UHD capability probably will want the set, but IMLTHO I think it's worth waiting for the inevitable sales. If you want the movies individually you will have to wait to see if Paramount offers the 4K editions that way. The Blu-Rays are available individually with digital codes. As to 4K v Blu-Ray, this is something you will have to decide based on your equipment. If you have a good player & a good screen, you see the difference in 4K on each of these. Each of these movies is at least 35 years old but I was impressed with the clarity and color on I-III. Your mileage may vary.

Great 4K Transfer & Surround Sound But Be Warned..

4K UHD can be off-putting in this case because it really exposes the limitations of the special effects in these movies. Especially in "The Motion Picture." I personally find it "fascinating" (as Spock would say) because although you can see more of the Andorian behind the curtain, you can also see how much work went into making these movies. Although things are more clearly models, matte paintings and green screen than you may have noticed before - it's amazing how much detail there is. In TMP, I noticed things in the VGER model I'd NEVER seen before and I must have watched this move almost 100 times.
You will notice any scene that has both cast members and VFX at the same time takes a hit visually due to the layering / superimposing process used to make the effects possible. Dialogue heavy scene with no VFX are crystal clear and beautiful. This is simply the limitation of the source print and not a fault of the 4K transfer.
The surround sound mix is quite good and, clearly, a lot of thought went into hit. You'll hear bridge chatter and all manner of Enterprise ambiance all around you. It's very nice on a proper 5.1 surround sound system.
These movies were never intended to be viewed in 4K UHD. If you can get on board with some of the jarring changes in footage quality, what you'll find is a deeper insight into craftsmanship that went into making them. Personally, I dig it.

Love these movies. They can double or triple dip me and I will still buy them. I think they look the best they ever have. If tou have not bought before... this will get you the first 4.
What I don't like:
Why not all 6 OG movies?
I would have preferred each movie get its own case instead 4K in on and blurays in the other but at least they aren't in paper sleeves or stacked. For the price they could have sprung for different cover art between the bluray cases... they actually just chopped the case art faces from the box cover art. How cheap can you get.
And I don't love the box cover artwork... Why is Kirk in the blue outfit-weakest uniform of all the series and movies? Seriously?
In short, they put almost zero effort into this boxed set, the best you can say is it is compact in your shelf.
Fortunately, the movies look and sound great, its a cash grab if you already have them on bluray maybe its a pass but if you don't and maybe try for a sale... the most important part is the movies abd that was done well enough.

The transfer for all of these movies was excellent, my only complaint really is that They use the Dolby true HD soundtrack, instead of upgrading to Dolby Atmos. All of the original extras that were in the 2009 release are included, The only thing that really baffles the most of us is, why just the first four movies, why not all six. Paramount seems to be going to the Money grab and wet our appetites with this one. I did not double dip, at the time his review was posted, a new version featuring all six movies has been released, in addition to the individual releases for each film one through six. This collection of four includes five movies, two versions of Star Trek II the wrath of Khan available as a branched disc. A few years ago with the same two movies were released on a special collection desk which debuted the directors edition on Blu-ray for the first time, this is the second version of the Directors cut. The original version appeared on DVD back in 2001. The sole difference is a few pieces of removed dialogue, and perhaps a few alternate angles for some scenes. For those who are very alert, paramount has had the G rating for the motion picture removed, and now it is an NR rating, the reason being that the subsequent release of the directors edition which came out also at the same time as the six movie collection, ( available separately however) has been resubmitted to the MPAA and has been given a PG rating. Personally I'm not sure how the the adding of special effects, warranted a change from G to PG, It, how clever could be related to the new dialogue cotent added. Just to avoid confusion, the 1979 theatrical version of the motion picture is the only one included in this set.

A Good, But Not Great, UHD Debut for "Trek"

Paramount has released the first four Trek films on UHD in a set, and the results are overall rather pleasing. Gone is a majority of the DNR (digital noise reduction) that made the 2009 blu-ray transfers downright awful (don't worry, the blus included in this set are remastered). Each film has a nice layer of grain to them and picture detail is nicely improved.
So, why only four stars? Well, a couple of reasons. The first is Paramount only offering up the first four films in this set. While no one misses having "Star Trek V" in 4K, not including "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" is just plain wrong.
The other issue is not including the director's cut of the first "Trek" film in this set alongside the theatrical edition. I know Paramount is currently working on a 4K restoration and these things take time, but now you are asking fans of the series to fork out even more money down the road to own the eventual UHD release. It wouldn't surprise me if they issued it exclusively in new box set...along with films five and six. Bravo, Paramount.
Still, if you can get this set at a good price -and you don't care about the exclusion of the other films,- this is a solid set. Recommended, with a few reservations.

Say what you will about Star Trek The Motionless Picture, it has never been better presented than in this 4K release. This is a very good-looking movie and the lack of extras on the 4K disc shouldn't deter a purchase (since most available extras are on the accompanying Blu-ray discs). This entire set is the best video version of the 1st four ST OG movies. I've chosen not to critique scripts, acting or SFX. You can do that on your own. But, if you've been on the Voyage of this little TV show that an ex-pilot/cop created, was supported and championed by Lucille Ball and has gone on to spawn an empire that encompasses all media (and has even REALLY gone into space) then you know what you need to know and I can't tell you anything new, except that this is a worthy purchase!

Finally, after years of waiting, the original Star Trek crew is on 4K Blu-ray…..it’s about time. As a big fan of the original series, I’m very happy. This set includes Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II : The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search For Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. The 4K discs look spectacular. The audio, while not Dolby Atmos is still very good. The regular blu ray discs I believe are remastered but I could be wrong. This is a must buy for fans of the series. Bring on the next set. Thanks Paramount.

Love these films and to have a brand new 4k remaster of them is thrilling. These are far superior to the previously released BluRay versions.
Highly recommended to all fans of these classic trek films.
Has both BluRay and 4k discs so great to buy even if you don't yet have a 4k player. Plus has a 4k digital copy.
Note that Wrath of Khan has both the theatrical and directors cut editions which is excellent.
Almost every single previous special feature also presented in this set. Highly recommended.
Best these films have ever looked and likely the best they ever will look minus the Motion Picture Directors Cut 4k edition coming next year.

If you are a fan of the first 4 movies in the franchise and want to view them in the best possible way then this purchase is for you. It’s great that the newly remastered Blu Ray discs are included along with the 4K discs. In fact when I played them on my 3 year old non HDR 4K tv they provided a better picture then the 4K discs because my 4K Blu Ray was outputting more visual information then my tv was capable of properly reproducing. So I just purchased a new Neo QLED tv and now the visual image from the 4K discs is breathtaking. I am very pleased with this Star Trek 4 movie collection.

Great little set of these movies, they look tremendous and was made better by the discount that I managed to get at the time. Only caveat would be that there is, I believe, a newer version of Star Trek The Motion Picture coming out soon. That may be an issue for some, and may not matter much at all for others. I'm glad to have the Director's Cut of the second movie, and to have the third and fourth films as well. Great deal for the standard blu-rays and the 4K discs together.

The original Star Trek movies are well-served with this 4K edition, though the sound might have been upgraded to Dolby Atmos instead of Dolby TrueHD 7.1. But visually, it's gorgeous eye candy, especially the first film. The flaws in Star Trek: The Motion Picture are inherent in the film -- the poor plot and lack of characterization -- but the lush visuals make you pay much less attention to its failings. And the other three movies are excellent. This edition is worth the bucks.

Finally on 4K blu ray. I saw others belittling the first film. First of all, therr was no guide on how a film should be set up. The series had been off the air almost a decade before. Paramount was unsure if Star Trek should be brought back as series or a movie. Is it a true Trek movie, no. Is it a great science fiction movie, yes . As for those that complain about the movies offered. It takes time to remaster these films. Hopefully they will be offered individually.

I don't understand why they wouldn't release all six original films in one 4K collection. With that said, it's nice to have these four, especially since it features the Director's Cut of "The Wrath of Kahn." Although if you're also looking for the Director's Cut of "The Motion Picture," you might want to wait until next year's 4K release.
Anyhoo, the movies have never looked so detailed, with deep blacks where they should be. And the sound is pretty great. Watching these in 4K, especially if you have a big screen, is almost like seeing them for the first time.

I purchased this because I was eager to watch The Motion Picture on my new 4K TV and it looks great. However, as I knew would be the case, they are now releasing a set with all 6 movies as well as stand alone discs. The advantage to this and the 6-movie set that (as of now) it's the only way to get the Theatrical Cut of ST: TMP. I can't give it higher stars knowing there's a set will a set with all 6 coming out next month.
