Customers highly value the Starry Station Wireless-AC Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router's ease of use, attractive design, and intuitive touchscreen interface. Many appreciate its strong performance and impressive range, while also noting the helpful parental controls and guest network features. However, some users find the limited number of Ethernet ports and the presence of a small fan to be drawbacks. The setup process is widely praised for its speed and simplicity.

Great Router, The Connected Home Needs It

Starry to me is all about ease-of-use and direct, effective transparency. After ordering my Starry Touchscreen WiFi Router, I received tracking information so I had some idea when I would receive it. Once you open the shipping box, which isn't over packaged, there's the well-designed, easy-to-read triangular box itself with your router inside.
Sliding out the router was less intuitive than I thought it would be, which was interesting, cause I just kind of bumbled a bit, but that took no longer than 30 seconds. So really, it's still easy, peasy. Next up, I just followed the instructions on the box.
If you've ever hooked up a piece of electronics in your life, like ever, even once, then this router will be no sweat. Take the power cord, plug it in, then plug in the Ethernet cord to your modem...Simple, right? Just read and go.
In maybe 5 or 10 minutes, I setup my network. The touchscreen looks great and works like a champ. Plus, whereas other brands release routers that look like a bobo video game system from the 80s, a weird utility box, or a toy no one wants, the white triangle looks clean and futuristic. Just to note, when you setup your network, it creates two different "channels" both have the same name except one has a "5" at the end of it. That's for your 5GHz Channel.
What I like most about the Starry is that it shows all your devices connected, the percentage of the signal strength from 0 to 100%, and if your signal isn't optimal, it will tell you why so you can troubleshoot. That direct communication is great, especially if you have lots of devices connected.
I have experienced a few oddities with the device. For example, it seems like the device runs slightly hot for a router; maybe that's normal, maybe not. Also, at night, I've noticed a few times where it says there's an internet outage but that wasn't actually what was happening. After I disconnected and reconnected, it ran fine. Overall, it's run pretty consistently, so in my mind, it's not an issue.
It's got the meat and potatoes everyone wants from a router -except with a sweet touchscreen and responsive, smart feedback, the meat's steak and those potatoes are gratin. Plus, you get all those advanced, high-falutin' fixins if you ever need a more sophisticated Wi-Fi setup. There's also the app for configuring advanced settings which is also intuitive.
Would I recommend, especially in this day and age when more and more of your devices at home will need to be connected? Absolutely.

Expensive, but incredibly powerful device

I want to start my review stating that I received my Starry Station for free in exchange for a review of the unit which is why I don't have a verified purchase. However, my opinions of the unit have not been influenced by the company.
Initial Setup and impressions
I have a lot of experience with home Internet setup and management of routers, and I have to say right from the start the Starry was by far the easiest to setup. While setting up my first router several years ago took some trial and error, setting up the Starry was incredibly easy because it had explicit instructions within explaining how it should be connected to your ISP's modem/router. During setup if something went wrong, the Starry Station will let you know with a simple notification on the device while providing suggestions to the user to help get connected to the Internet (if all cables are properly connected, sometimes a simple reset of the main router or the Starry Station would get you connected).
The touch screen interface made the entire setup very easy and it was very refreshing to not have to login from a computer, which in my house is not near my router. By doing this, I was able to create the router SSID (router's name), setup a password, and get immediate feedback that I was connected to the Internet. With other routers, the lights on the front are in no way intuitive and do not help with troubleshooting when something is awry. I loved having the instant notification that I was ready to get online with my devices which allowed me avoid checking with a phone or computer that I was truly online.
Once I got the Starry Station connected an online, it needed to download an update. I was worried that this and future updates would occur without user consent and shutdown the Internet connection for a period of time, but I was happy to learn that I was still able to use the Internet while the Station downloaded, installed the update, and restarted. This is probably useless for this review, but for those interested, I suspect the Starry Station has some version of Android powering the system.
For the online gamers out there, forwarding ports is very easy in order to open your NAT. In advanced settings, you can make a DHCP reservation to ensure your device has a set IP address whenever it comes online. You can then forward ports to that device through a separate menu in the advanced settings. Once you do this, reset your router and device and you will be good to go. Oh, and if you are still having trouble, make sure that you forward these ports within your primary router to your new Starry Station.
User Interface
I am a big fan of the interface of both the Starry Station touch screen as well as the Android app. Both the Station and the app provide details on the available and actively consumed bandwidth for both download and upload speeds for the entire house for the past 24 hours (or at least just for the current day). Devices previously paired to and actively connected devices can be viewed from both the app and Station. Devices that have less than optimal connections will be highlighted in red. A notification will inform you that the connection is not good and that you might want to move the Station and the device closer to one another. You can also see the usage of each devices connected to the Starry Station with another line graph overlaid with the household usage, which I find very useful, though the colors are too similar which can make it a bit hard to differentiate between currently viewed device and the household usage. Now, some people may find this feature a bit too intrusive, so it would be nice if certain devices can remain hidden from such information capturing. Additionally, much of this information is available via the app from anywhere in the world, so this means at least all of the information captured about the devices connected to and previously connected to the Station is stored on Starry servers somewhere which some people may not be comfortable with.
I feel that the user interface via both the Station's touch screen and app will be the biggest draw to this router, specifically for users with little understanding of interfacing a router in a browser. The amount of information readily available to the user, and just the simple health score, goes a long way with helping users understand how their Internet is performing around the house. I've seen others knock the health score as a gimmick, but I disagree and believe it goes a long way in helping users understand the quality of their Internet across their house.
Hardware and Specs
I really like the design and it works at least as well as my ASUS AC66R. Up close, both devices achieve around 85 Mbps. Across the house and one floor above, I fluctuate around 30-40 Mbps. I don't know the exact distance here, but there is a one floor and 3 rooms separating this room from the Starry Station. This is a range that my old Verizon FIOS provided 802.11n router struggled to reach and typically provided me with just 1-5 Mbps. The new FIOS router with 802.11ac currently provides me with about 15-20 Mbps. Overall, I'd say that the Starry will perform better at long range than any ISP provided router and just about as well as many other big name 802.11ac routers.
Unfortunately, this router only has 1 Ethernet port for a physically connected device which will be a major drawback for some people. Many other routers have at least 4 Ethernet ports and having just 1 on this unit seems too little. Maybe Starry was counting on you to connect your Ethernet wires to the modem...
This is the only router that I have ever used with an audible fan. While the fan isn't terribly loud and it is in a room that is seldom used in my house, I can see it being a bit annoying for users who would be sitting very close to the unit.
Future Plans
There is a microphone and speaker that are not yet functional on the Starry. I couldn't confirm the future potential for these, but I think the possibilities for these are interesting. If I had to guess, I'd think that these would serve a purpose similar to the Amazon Echo or Tap devices. If my guess is right on this, then the increased cost compared to other routers could very well be justified considering the price of these standalone devices.
The Starry Station is just the beginning for Starry. Starry wants to become an ISP with its Starry Internet which would connect users to the Internet wirelessly. A Starry Beam would transmit Internet to user purchased Starry Points which would connect to their Starry Stations to and connect them to the Internet. Ideally, this would allow for high speed Internet to be rolled out rapidly to users without having to lay wire which prevents current ISPs from providing high speed Internet to all people, especially in rural locations. As exciting as this may be, it is even more difficult to speculate on this technology than the microphone and speaker because I'm not quite certain how feasible this will be. I am excited to see how it may work, but I will not allow the potential of these future plans affect my score until either more information becomes available or these features are released.
Bottom Line
This is a router that performs just as well as top of the line home routers in terms of its ability to provide multiple devices high speed Internet at close and long range. However, due to its price relative to other routers, it's hard to recommend this router unilaterally. For users who are comfortable navigating and modifying router settings in the browser interface, I would probably recommend something like the ASUS AC66 or AC68. However, for users who do not feel comfortable with that (which is honestly probably the majority of people), and would like their router to provide a variety of information for rapid troubleshooting, I would highly recommend this router. A router will last you several years and I honestly feel that most routers on the market right now just do not make it easy for people to interact with them throughout its life making troubleshooting too complicated for most people. The Starry Station provides you with so much information without forcing you to look to customer service or 3rd party sources to troubleshoot. Honestly, many of these features seem so necessary that it seems ridiculous that all other routers don't have them standard.
I'm really excited to see what the mic/speaker end up doing in the future, and even further in the future, the Starry Internet could be an absolute game changer in the way we across the world connect to the Internet. I will update my review over time to reflect my thoughts on additional features that Starry adds.

Beyond Expectations

I received a Starry Station in exchange for writing a review. I was not pressured to write a positive review. I have been using my Starry Station for over two weeks. My conclusion: Starry Station is a premium product that delivers above my expectations.
For context: I am fairly tech-savvy. I haven’t upgraded my router in years because the one I have seemed to work without major issues. I live in an apartment building, and use a cable connection for Internet service.
Starry Station is undoubtedly on the high-end of routers designed for consumers. Many, if not most, of its features provide functionality that competitors haven’t even dreamed of including in their products yet.
Set up was very easy. Once you plug Starry Station in, the touchscreen guides you through an intuitive setup menu. One of the things I find fun about the Starry Station is the way the guide helps you select a network name and password. While you can customize your selection, I opted to use Starry to help select a memorable network name and password. (No long strings of complicated characters necessary!) Within just a few minutes of turning on the product, I was able to move all the devices on my home network onto the Starry Station’s WiFi network.
I really enjoy the feature of the Starry Station that tells you the speed of your internet connection. This gives you a good idea of if you’re actually receiving the speeds that you’re paying for! The techie side of me also appreciates the smartphone app that allows you to monitor and perform some administrative functions remotely. I would bet the functionality of the app gets even greater before too long.
Pros:
Connection: One of my devices is a high-end tablet computer. With my previous router, I regularly ran into challenges establishing and maintaining a WiFi connection from this device. For whatever reason, when using the Starry Station’s WiFi network, my tablet now connects to the network very quickly and the connection never drops. I am finding, across the board, that my devices tend to connect to the Starry network more quickly than to my previous network.
Range: Starry Station’s range significantly outperforms my existing router. To put it to the test, I walked down three floors of my apartment to see if I could still maintain the connection. I maintained the connection without any issue at all.
Form Factor: This is the best looking router I’ve ever seen! It’s no little gray box with blinking lights. With hidden antennas and shiny white triangular form, Starry Station has a sleek look and feel.
Cons:
Cost: It is not cheap. This is truly a premium product, and you pay for it. The good news is you get what you pay for.
Few Ports: This is primarily a WiFi access point. There is only one Ethernet port on the back of the device. If you plan to have several devices plugged in via Ethernet port, you may want to keep an old router or switch on hand. I do have several devices that I prefer to plug-in rather than connected via WiFi. I solved this problem easily by plugging my old router into the sole port on the back of the Starry, and plugging my devices into the old router. This worked perfectly for me, but this limitation is something you may want to keep in mind if you connect several devices using wired lines.

I've had my Starry Station for a week now, and I love it! To start with, it's incredibly simple to set up, and is beautifully designed. It looks like a piece of modern art or an alien artifact. Freakin' cool. Beyond simplicity and aesthetics, this router delivers impressive speed and range (it provides 4-5 bars of WiFi strength on devices three rooms away that my previous router couldn't even reach), and has yet to require any kind of maintenance or attention from me. I can't wait for Starry Internet!

I absolutely LOVE the Starry Station! Here’s why: going from my old secondhand router to Starry Station was like upgrading from a flip phone to the latest iPhone – ie., it’s night-and-day different and extremely intuitive in all aspects, starting with the elegant triangle shape (echoed in the packaging too, so cool, and not goofy looking at all!) down to the dead-simple setup which is literally plug-and-play, ie, plug modem and power into Starry Station, follow a couple touch-screen prompts, boom, you’re done -- whole process took me less than 5 minutes. But the best part about the whole thing is the internet speed – I’m finally hitting the full 50MBPs (sometimes even 55MBps!) that I’ve been paying for from my cable provider, whereas with my old router was routinely clocking 9-10MBps (ie, 1/5 the speed). Game changer.
The accompanying app is pretty cool too, and equally intuitive and sleek. For example, pairing my app to the router was quick, and setting up and sharing a guest wifi account was super easy. The advanced controls and parental controls look great too, although I’m not there yet in my life (but I like that it has those built in for the future!).
Bottom line: while a little pricey, you’re definitely getting what you pay for in terms of a highly intuitive, premium, plug-and-play router. A sweet upgrade for techies and non-techies alike!

Before this I had the router and modem combination installed by my internet service provider, the signal was awful and if more than a few devices were connected at the same time it would crash all together. When I received the Starry station I was just hoping to solves those issues specifically. I did not expect all the other options offered. My connection has improved greatly, I get faster upload and download speeds than before. No one has had their signal drop despite the number of connected devices which ranges between two and ten devices at a time.
The design is great, I have cats who like to attempt to fit into ridiculously small spaces. The triangle design and wide base will prevent it from falling over if it just gets bumped which is a huge plus.
Installation was much easier than I expected it to be, I had a friend on stand by to help me figure out installation if need be and ended up not even contacting him about it. The touch screen just walked me thought each step until everything was set up. The hardest part for me was choosing a WiFi name and password that I liked. I do also love that to connect a new device I don't have to go into my office and read of a long list of numbers anymore.
I went on vacation shortly after the Starry station arrived so I have not had a ton of time to tinker with all the options available, but as my children grow older the option to limit their access times will come in real handy. I also downloaded the mobile app which allows me to see which devices are connected and edit the systems settings without ever messing with the router itself.
I would absolutely recommend this WiFi router to everyone.

An elegant router for a more civilized age

The build quality is a step above any other router I've used. Most routers (even expensive ones) have a flimsy, cheap plastic feel to them, but the Starry looks and feels like a modern, high-end device.
Setup is very quick and easy. The guide gives you the option to set some common settings, and it provides sensible defaults if you don't care.
The phone app is a handy way to adjust settings and view network data. All the settings you would expect to find on your router's configuration page can be accessed through the app.
One thing I was pleasantly surprised by is the inclusion of an automatic night-time mode. My router is in my bedroom and I was so annoyed by the flashing lights on my old router that I eventually covered the LEDs with electrical tape. This was not an issue with the Starry wich can be programmed to turn off its screen between certain hours of the day.
Another handy feature is the ability to easily enable a guest network in order to give a large group of people temporary access to your WiFi without having to give out your network password to everyone.
On the negative side, there is a bit of fan noise from the station. It has what appears to be an 80mm fan pointing out the back and a it produces a low hum at all times. There is no rattling, or whining from the fan and it's probably much quieter than the average desktop PC, but it's something to be aware of.
Overall, the Starry station does a good job of making a home router consumer-friendly and easy to set up, while still allowing you to fiddle with settings if you want to dig into that side of things.

After going through the very quick set up process, I was able to connect to the Internet without any problems. The first thing that I did was to check my Internet speed from both the station speed test and Ookla test, both where the same. The speeds that I obtained where speeds that I had never before achieved via wifi with my old router. As for the design, it is a nice station and not just a black square box, it makes a statement. Having the app is really helpful as I can monitor what is going on with my Internet. The other neat feature was being able to see my user and password, and being able to share that information with friends that stop by or being able to create a guest account and have them connect to that wifi name. After theses first few days of using the Starry Station I can say that I am really pleased with the performance, design and easiness of use.

Gorgeous device & packaging, extremely easy setup and seamless use.
The device is beautifully designed along with the packaging it comes in. It's not like other router's that are large, clunky and ugly. One that would normally hide away. The display is just as beautiful. Visualization of the connected devices with the floating orb's is super cool as well. The interface attracts you to the device and makes use of it so easy.
Set up was probably the easiest thing in the world. And as I was setting it up, all I could think about was those that are absolutely clueless when normally putting these things together, they would not have a problem. The device literally walked you through the set up making it hard to mess up.
Usage has been very easy and no problems have occurred thus far. The app has been great to check in on the status of the device as well. The wifi has been great thus far with many devices connected. Overall a great purchase.

I've been using Starry for about a week, and I agree with the other positive reviews here. This router has great range, easy to set up, I like the speed and the idea that I can see what's going on from anywhere through the app. Most of the time, to get the control that I love to have over a technical setup, you have to do something kind of drastic and time-consuming (for a non-IT person like myself) - like getting root access to your phone. Yes, you CAN do that stuff yourself. The big draw here is that Starry makes that level of control easy, FAST, and intuitive.
So: friend comes over, logs in quickly and seamlessly on her phone. On my phone, I can check her connection speed, phone type, and edit the device name so that I'll always be able to tell her phone from any other. I can block her device at dinner time if she were the kind of rude to be checking ESPN while eating. Done in under a minute, no head-scratching. Gorgeous.
I'm almost at the stage where I have to worry about parental controls, and those look great too, with more functionality planned in future releases. In short, I'm a fan.
I was given this device in exchange for an honest review, but I was interested before the chance came up. My experience is confirming what I thought would be awesome.

Best Looking Router with Great App

The Starry Station is a great addition to our home. It is the best looking router on the market. The company obviously thought deeply about design in making the Starry Station. I'm happy to have the Starry Station sitting in my living room where people can see it. I work from home and I'm on the wifi all day long to talk to my co-workers over Google Hangouts. The wifi while using the Starry Station always works great. In addition the router keeps me updated on how strong my internet connection is and how much data each device is using with the great visual display on the front of the device as well as the iPhone app. Both the front of the router and the app show how many devices are on the internet and how much data they are using. When I'm out of the house on the weekend I can tell how many devices are on the internet. The device was super easy to set up. You can take it directly out of the box, plug it in, and it walks you through the set up. The device has a touch screen on the front which allows you to set up the wifi name and password easily. I'm very happy with my switch to my Starry Station.

Starry Station - The Wireless Router, Evolved
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I received the Starry Station about two weeks ago, and this is my review of the unit to date.
Packaging & Set-up:
The Starry Station arrived in a very high end triangle shaped box. Upon opening the package the first thing I noticed aside from the beautiful aesthetics of the unit itself (it looks AMAZING alongside our other tech gear in the living room) was the distinct lack of paper materials to help get set up. I would quickly realize that these would not be required. I removed the unit and included power cable / ethernet cable, and realized that my next issue was that my modem was a combination modem/router, which I then thought may be a deal breaker. I connected the unit to my modem/router combo, followed a few short on screen set up options, and the new network was up and running in no time. I was actually shocked at how easy and intuitive it was.
Performance/Features:
Wireless Performance - our previous wireless router seemed to have issues with the far corners of our large apartment, as well as what seemed to be complications handling the large amount of devices it handled at a time (2-4 iPhones, 2 iPads, XBox One, 2-4 Macbooks).Since switching to Starry, we have no dead zones, and all devices are humming along at top speed, no problem.
Features: The touch screen works wonderfully. My personal favorite is the home visualization where each device connected to the internet is shown as a floating "dot" of various color - and depending on the amount of bandwidth the device is using, the larger the dot will grow.
Internet Speed "Score" or "Grade" - internet connection is given an overall score (mine ranges from 92-98%) but this number can be a bit vague, even when checking out the breakdown provided for each score. I would prefer a non-numerical representation of my connection quality and speed, especially since this visualization or number is so central to the interface.
Companion App - The companion application is well developed and has great UI just like the Starry unit itself - and I love being able to quickly send guests the guest network and password information.
Speed Check / Internet Speed Monitoring
This one was important to me - my cable company, which has sold me on the faster, upgraded internet, seems to have a nasty habit of throttling it down on us when going unchecked. Not anymore! Its amazing to be able to see the current down, up, ping, and more - and also to be provided graphs to track performance day after day. No more throttling down my internet speed, not on Starry's watch!
Overall: This is the best wireless router on the market in my opinion. No major issues, supreme ease of use, and a redesign to form factor and functionality that seem both years ahead of time, or years overdue depending on how you look at it. If you have the extra to spend on a wireless router, check out the Starry for sure.

Overall, the Starry Station is very easy to use out of the box and the interface is very easy to navigate and understand. The design is much nicer than a normal WiFi Router and suits a living space. Having the ability to setup a guest network is nice and the addition of the parental controls is a nice feature as well. It has helped diagnose when a particular device or the network as a whole has connectivity issues. For the price I would hope for more features, but it does sound like there are more to come in the future.

Not being a super techie, this router is awesome! It was so easy to setup. It literally is 3 quick steps to setup. I had an initial problem that it couldn't find the internet and I had to unplug the modem and the router and plug them back in, modem first. The router touchscreen interface is so cool, tells you you right on the router screen your cable modem speed. You always wonder if you are getting the speed you are promised! There is also an app you can download. I haven't looked at the parental controls yet that will let you control the availability of the router but it is a great feature!
I did call customer support too because I thought something wasn't working and they answered on a Friday night after only a few minute hold. There was actually no issue, I just wasn't patient enough to wait for the modem and router to come online. On the app, you can request customer support to call you and you can also message them right from the app. Great product!

We've had our Starry router for a few days now. Set up was easy for someone like me who is not computer savvy. However, the actual instruction manual was a very small pamphlet with small print. The unit itself is stylish and doesn't require a lot of desk space. The Starry needs more ethernet ports. As far as wi-fi distance it's a little disappointing. It could be our house is older and has thick walls but the connection does not reach the other end of our house. It would probably work better if you home is more open. I would recommend the Starry.

This router really seems to be designed with the user in mind. After struggling with my internet provider for service, setting up the Starry router was thankfully super intuitive/easy. I’m not a tech person, so I’ve struggled a lot in the past with setting up/troubleshooting routers and modems. Having a router that is actually a responsive piece of technology takes away a lot of these issues. I love being able to glance across the room to check my Wi’Fi’s performance or see if one of my devices is overexerting itself (which is generally the case if my Wi-Fi is running slow). The touchscreen interface makes troubleshooting easy, and while I don’t really use parental controls, I think it’s a great idea to have that functionality tied into the router. Overall, I don’t have any complaints!

Yes please! Finally, a wireless router that doesn't hate me. We've always had trouble keeping a decent signal in our home and fiddling with all of the settings in the internet browser never seemed to help. After my netgear bit the dust, I decided it was time for an upgrade. The Starry is not exactly cheap, so I was pretty hesitant. But after reading some other reviews I decided to give it a try. I can say without compromise that this is the best performing router I've ever had. I was throwing away money on a connection speed that I couldn't even use! This alone makes it worth the price. As other reviewers have said, its really easy to set up and the touch screen is pretty cool, but the awesome performance is where its at.
I would recommend this to a friend

I've been using the Starry Station router for a couple weeks now and am very happy with it. The router itself is beautifully designed and looks great displayed out in the open. While the router does have a cooling fan, I don't notice the sound unless I'm right up next to it, and even then, it's very quiet. I live in an approx 1000 sq foot condo and had trouble getting a signal in my bedroom using my previous router, which is only a short distance away. With Starry, I've able to stream Netflix and Amazon prime throughout my condo in HD with no issues. My overall impression is that this is a great looking piece of equipment with excellent performance and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade.
