This is the zombie game I've been hoping for. While it isn't the best looking game out there or even remotely polished, it gets a lot of things right. You will run into a lot of glitches, but once you dive in and experience everything the game offers. You won't even think about it. It's highly ambitious and makes me appreciative of its effort at such a relatively low cost. My previous favorite zombie game was Dead Island, but after playing this game. It fits more of my preference. To best describe what makes it great, I will highlight the ideas and aspects it incorporates.
-It's Open World: Having any zombie game made in this manner gives it the most potential. The kinds of missions and gameplay that opens up are limitless. While this game leaves more to be desired. It offers a believable desolate setting where our characters can engage and survive. Some missions consist of finding medicine for wounded or rescue other survivors who are being overrun. You have various areas that range from towns, farms, countryside, to suburb, fairground, and military zone. There's even a city if you purchase one of the add-ons for a separate story. Just having the ability to free roam and drive around an apocalyptic setting running over zombies beats out most games period.
-It's about Survival: Not all zombie games have to be scary or about killing. While you will be doing lots of it, the game is all about surviving and finding a safe zone. There are various areas to find shelter to fortify yourself from the hordes. The game lets you decide what's best for you. You have resources you need to scavenge for to keep the base running and functioning. It will require maintenance, upgrades, and protection. Zombies will try to overrun your base from time to time. On top of that you can find survivors to help build a community within the compound. The bigger your community, the more resources you need to keep it functioning and everyone happy. Yes, you will be required to keep people from causing trouble or losing hope. How you deal with it is up to you which leads to the next aspect
-Controlling More than one Character: Probably my favorite aspect of this game. It makes me feel like everyone in the community has to do their share and contribute. Characters can get tired, sick, or hurt. So when that happens, next man up. Don't get too heavily invested in a character because if they die, they die for good. There were moments I felt crushed when one of my stronger characters got killed on a night scavenge or trying to rescue someone. Zombies are not difficult, but when they are in hordes and consist of some of the stronger ones like the juggernaut and feral. Your hopes of surviving is very bleak. There is no co-op play, but you can ask other survivors to watch your back. Co-op play would be a great addition, but I don't mind it not being included. The AI does a commendable job. Another fun aspect you can experiment with is if a character is giving fellow survivors a hard time. What will you do when you control him or her? Did I mention deaths are gruesome? Maybe they can prove themselves?
I'm sure I can talk more about the game, but those points I highlighted are good for curious people who want to try it out without spoiling too much. The game is a bit more slow paced, but it is addicting. While it can feel a bit repetitive, everything you're doing makes sense. You need to search for medicine, weapons, food, and supplies to survive. If you did a good job, zombies will rarely attack your base. This game succeeds at doing the little things. For example, when scavenging, each character can only carry one load when returning back to base. When I found an extra bag of ammo, the game gave me an option to radio in for a runner. While returning back to base, I passed a runner actually heading to the location. It's these little details that make this game awesome. They can also run into trouble on their way back.
At a budget price, the voice acting and soundtrack are quite good. This game didn't feel too long or too short. It feels just about right where a replay doesn't feel like a chore. I've already replayed it 3 times. This game deserves more support and a bigger budget. An extra bit of polish can go a long way. I can imagine it being bigger and better. I just wish I didn't have to buy a new console to play it.

This is a great open world zombie game. You have safe house thats your base of operations, and from there you go out and scavenge for supplies. There is perma death, but if you die you will just take over as one of the other survivors. If you like zombie games you will like this.

The graphics are rough and the animations are clunky but the game is FUN. Reminiscent of XCOM and classic strategy games, you don't play a single unkillable hero but a team of survivors. With base building, supply management, and morale to consider, the strategy is deeper than it first appears. Even in the late game, the tension remains because any of your team can die if you get reckless. For the price, great game.

A True Original with Great Design and Execution

For fans of open word sandbox games and fans of zombie survival games alike, State of Decay is a truly original masterpiece of game design and execution.
It's the zombie apocalypse! What are you going to do!? Well... obviously you're going to forage for food, medicine and ammunition, aren't you? But be careful, because supplies in the town around you are finite - find what you can use and the game will mark off the buildings you've fully searched on your map. You'd better make good use of your loot or save it until later, because once it's gone, it's GONE.
The same applies to your playable characters. There is no save game feature; the game just continues while you're offline, and when you come back, some events may have transpired. But no save game means no re-loading when your main character gets torn in half by an eight-foot, 700 pound zombie. So you'd better watch out... and you'd better make some more friends among the surviving NPCs.
Perma death is a pretty novel feature, but it's not just a gimmick. Not only does it make you value your characters and their development, but it makes you worried when things start to go sideways. Any game that can make you legitimately afraid or worried - without punishing you unduly for minor mistakes - is a cut above everything else out there.
In the case of State of Decay, there's really nothing else like it. It started out as an inexpensive Xbox Live only game on the 360, and took off in a way that surprised everyone except its creators (and maybe even them). The Year One Survival Edition for Xbox One includes upgraded visuals, new content, and ALL of the DLC from the original 360 version.
This is a no-brainer, folks! Buy it!

A little confusing at first since there is a lot going on, but once you get the hang of things it's so much fun. Intense encounters with the undead and a variety of missions keep things interesting and add to the replay value. Play stealthy or run & gun! And you can't beat the price.

State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition combines the elements of a RPG/sandbox game with a genre that has been heavily exploited over the past several years. The difference with State of Decay is that it is not only challenging but also the most realistic zombie simulation to date. Don't expect to breeze through this game like other zombie sims. This game take careful planning and execution in order to achieve in-game goals. Even when you are not online, the game continues to play in the background, creating an almost "real-time" atmosphere. Also, at $29.99, this game is a great bargain!

This is one of the most realistic survivor horror games w/ all the zombies to best in the world. You have to collect food, building materials, fuel, and ammo to maintain a safe house and build a defense against the zombies. Every decision you make will determine how the story progresses. I've played a lot of zombie games but this one is more like the walking dead tv series than any other zombie apocalypse game. This is a MUST HAVE!!!

What's great about this game is the survival part. The price is great as well. The story is not bad, but a little short. However you can continue playing after the story and remain with the items that you have accumulated. Great game overall.

I like the game.. It's nice there are three versions to play on one disc. The graphics could be better at times, along with less glitches.. What I like most is that the game changes based on my decisions.. Some is the missions are repetitive

The Original release of State of Decay on the Xbox 360 was a good game with technical issues. The Xbox one version didn't really fix any of the problems but if you can look past them it's a pretty fun game with the dlc thrown in.

First off, definitely worth the $29.99 price tag! Gameplay is easy and the three different modes are a good chance of pace. Would give it 5 stars if the stories were a little longer. But still a lot of fun!

I received an email with special pricing and information about this game being remastered and touting it as an excellent game in the zombie genre. That combined with having a rewards certificate to spend influenced me to go ahead and get it since I like all things zombie. The game is fun enough in the way that the Grand Theft Auto series was fun in it open world-edness, however the game play is a LOT like Dead Rising, but with less control over the fighting, which is frustrating. I played for a few hours and got bored. Not sure I will go back to it. Shame.

I have been looking forward to State of Decay coming to Xbox One ever since I first played it on my home computer. Being that I only have a mid level computer system it didn't run as smooth as I would have liked and plus I would rather sit on my couch with a controller for a game like this. If you are a zombie fan, a GTA V fan, or just love playing sandbox free roam titles you owe it to yourself to pick this little Gem up! The fact that it is only $30 is an amazing deal! After playing it on my Xbox One for a few hours I can say that the graphics are a lot crisper, the gameplay and frame rate are a heck of a lot smoother, and even the lighting seemed improved

I played this previously on my Xbox 360 but never finished it. I'm glad it came out on Xbox One as I do not own my 360 anymore. It is a fun game and the way it is setup is really cool. As you wander around you never know where a Zombie is gonna come from. Feels like how the real world would be if a Zombie apocalypse did happen.

so My expecattion were not that high for this title but i always heard that it was worth checking it out and im glad i made the investment this is a tru zombie survial RPG and to my surprise it very deep . you have manage resources , build up your home base scanvenge for food supplies and medicine for survivors which are very importane to your gameplay cause the game does have perma death and you can lose charcters for good if your not careful overall. Enjoing the game... impactful melee and great shooting mechanic make this a title worth picking up and for only 29.99... it even includes all the DLc it's totallyworth it if your into zombie survival RPG .....

The game is what you'd imagine The Walking Dead show to be as a video game, but with faster zombies, more cooperative humans, and less cannibals. You can switch between characters and use their skills (so you can be a "Daryl" or a "Dale"). Beware: once characters die, they and their skills are gone! The tension of searching through a house for much needed supplies while trying to not get overwhelmed by the dead is a huge deal. So is killing them with drive-by car doors. Graphics are somewhere between 360 and X1: not bad but not current gen either.
