Design:
Pros:
- Heavy and solid construction
- LED lighting is bright and visible
- Eliminates 40% of the space a normal keyboard takes up
- Each key has an adjustable actuation (how responsive the keypress is)
- Each key has an adjustable LED light
- Intentionally wired
- USB C cable is removable from the keyboard itself, allowing for different length option
- Function key that allows for multi-use of specific keys to accommodate for the missing 40% of keys a full keyboard would have
- Each key has dual purpose actuation. This allows for one action for the first 50% of the key press and a second action for the other 50% of the key press. This can be used as a “walk” for the first 50% and a “run” when fully depressed in a game
- There is a key removal tool included on the underside of the keyboard
Cons:
- There is substantial travel when pressing a key fully down due to its dual actuation capabilities. While some may find this a pro (as outlined above) some may find this obnoxious after using more slimline keyboards.
- Lack of a wrist rest included
- While amazing for taking nonsense keys out of gaming, this hinders the keyboards use in production settings. This is more of a “gaming intended only” keyboard
SteelSeries Software
Pros:
- Tons of configuration options.
- Each key can have individual lighting
- Each key can have individual multi point actuation adjustments from sensitivity to function
- Allows for firmware updates
- Can be used to sync lighting affects between other SteelSeries products
- Can configure profiles so the keyboard will change settings for specific games or applications
Bottom Line:
The SteelSeries Apex pro is an outstanding, space saving keyboard that gives gamers exactly what they need and nothing more. I appreciate the simplicity of the layout, comfort in saving space on the desk, leaving plenty of room for mouse movement. The configuration options are vast and meet any possible gaming need. The only hesitation I see is for use outside of gaming, which is not the intended use case anyway. While usable in production settings, it hinders due to lack of key pad and extra function keys. I have use dozens of gaming keyboards from all manufacturers and I think this one will be plugged into my rig for quite some time to come.

An excellent mini keyboard with unique abilities!

This is the third mini keyboard I have tested, and I am quite enjoying it! This Apex Pro Mini, descended from the award-winning Apex Pro full-sized gaming keyboard, stands up well to that reputation. This keyboard has a great amount of customizability, including the ability to change the actuation of each keystroke via the SteelSeries GG software. It also provides the ability to set dual actuation actions, where for example a single key like W can be set to walk at partial actuation and then sprint at full actuation. These Omnipoint adjustable switches evidently are the first of their kind and could prove quite competitive to the right users.
The switches themselves present here feel like basic linear switches: smooth keystroke with a small tap at the bottom to let you know full actuation has occurred. The build quality of the keyboard is right in line with my SteelSeries Aerox 5 mouse I use in complement with it: plastic, matte finish with a tactile texture. This is suitable in my opinion to maintain good contact with the keys during frenetic keystrokes in an FPS or MMORPG games without the sweat or grease of your fingertips slipping on the keypads.
As regular typing experience goes, I don’t mind this at all. If you have not utilized 60% mini keyboards before, there is some time needed to get used to the absence of a function row of keys or arrow keys. Once one becomes acquainted with this, old home-row typing habits return and it is off to the races with typing like normal again. Plus, the amount of desk space this saves you over a regular sized or TKL keyboard is tremendous. There is a lot more room for me to multitask on my desk now with this keyboard present.
One of the things I like about this keyboard is the little easter egg the put on the backside of the keyboard. Behind a rubber peel away cover, there is a handy little keycap pulling tool in the customary SteelSeries brand orange color! That is really cool and shows they care about users’ ability to customize or clean the keyboard on the go.
Altogether, I am highly in favor of this keyboard. If you are in the market for a well-made, highly featured mini keyboard, this one would be an excellent choice to consider! Thanks for reading and hope this review has helped encourage your purchase decision.

My New Favorite Keyboard, Almost Perfect!

TLDR; OmniPoint 2.0 switches allow customizable actuations as small as 0.2mm to full 3.8mm keystroke. Able to customize dual actuations for a single key, allowing customizable behavior at each actuation point. Full customizations can be done using the SteelSeries GG software. On-board customizations include actuation point adjustment and macro-recording. 60% keyboard is appropriate for gaming, or maybe desk space is an issue, but general productivity can be hindered. Keys are tactile and on the clicky side. Includes braided USB cable (USB-C to USB-A) and keycap puller. Can be used with on Playstation, XBOX and Mac aside from PC.
I’ve been using the Apex Pro for the last few days with a combination of work, general use and, of course, gaming. Right off the bat I felt very comfortable using the keyboard as this isn’t my first 60%. The familiarity of its size and the missing keys can take a bit to get used to, but the secondary keys, or what SteelSeries calls “meta” keys, are accessible yet a little bit hard to read. From a work/general use standpoint, I was able to decide what was appropriate for key actuation. I first used the on-board actuation adjustment to see how my typing behavior would be affected. It turns out that my preferred actuation point is at 1.8mm. It was enough for me to be light on my fingers, but at the same time allow me to rest them on the keyboard without spurious inputs. I created a “General” use profile in the GG software for this setting.
Moving on to gaming, I was able to build on my General use setting and make key modifications that I felt were appropriate for games I play. WSAD keys are widely used on many games and you start to realize how very light you can be on your fingers while playing, kind of like an athlete always on the balls of their feet. Since I can’t make single key adjustments on the keyboard itself, I had to go into the GG software and switch the actuation points for the WSAD keys. I dropped it down to about 0.8mm to get a feel for it, and the OmniPoint keys just do the job perfectly.
Speaking of the keys, one of the neat things you can do with the OmniPoint 2.0 switches is dual actuation, where you can have a single key perform two actions. But the real question is how or what use cases are achieved with this functionality. So one of the things I find annoying today is sprinting in games, usually activated using the shift key as a hold or toggle. I think I got spoiled when console gaming, using a simple push of the left thumbstick to activate sprinting, or maybe my left pinky is just trash. So setting up the ‘W’ key to both move forward and sprint takes a few steps. First step is to enable dual actuation of the key itself. A prerequisite for this is to ensure that the 2nd actuation point is larger than the primary. So if my W primary actuation is at 0.8mm, then any point after can activate the secondary. I had it set to the secondary max at 3.8mm. The second thing you have to do is set the dual actuation key binding. Here is where it can get a little tricky. The behavior that I want is W+Shift for sprinting, so I created a key binding of [L Shift + W] using the GG keystroke recorder to perform that once the second actuation is reached.
Dual actuation takes a lot of getting used to. The main problem is that you have to keep your fingers light enough to only activate the primary action. I purposely made my second actuation pegged at the max 3.8mm to prevent that from happening, but I still find myself inadvertently activating it. So in my case, I’m sprinting when I don’t want to. If there was a way for the keys to have a secondary hardware toggle like a thumbstick on a console controller, then these dual bindings would be more beneficial, in my opinion. So as it stands, you’ll have to be mindful of your keystrokes for dual binded keys, which can be difficult, At least it’s difficult for me.
In terms of build quality, the keyboard does feel hefty and dense for its size. It is encased in a plastic build, but does not feel cheap. There is only one USB-C port on the top left of the keyboard to connect it to your PC. The included sleeved USB cable is ample length and requires an available USB-A port on your PC. There isn’t a whole lot of branding on the keyboard, except on the SteelSeries function key, a tiny little logo on the bottom left corner of the keyboard and the top center facing the monitor.
I do have a couple of complaints. When switching profiles via meta keys, there is no indication of which profile I’m using. It probably would have been nice to map the profile to a specific RGB setting, but there can only be a single RGB setting for all profiles. I’m thinking there needs to be a firmware/software update for this. Also as I mentioned above, the meta keys are very hard to read, especially at night. For a 60%, I do rely on them when I use the keyboard outside of gaming. Then there is the price, which is at the high end for its class. But just on the OmniPoint 2.0 switches alone, this is the best gaming keyboard I have ever used, and therefore justifies its price point, in my opinion. Overall, I recommend this keyboard.

Finally found my perfect compact keyboard!

So, I've been primarly rocking another major brand for all of my PC gaming peripherals for the past 10+ years. I just purchased a brand new custom-built gaming PC back in Feb and did some major upgrades to my entire setup around then, as well (new desk, keyboard, mouse, the whole thing). Ultimately, I wasn't too happy with my new mouse and the 65% keyboard I had was...meh.
I've heard a lot of great things about SteelSeries and I've been doing a lot of research over on Reddit. I've learned that I'm really more of a TKL buy, but man, I do love the small form-factor of these 60/65% keyboards. So, I decided I'd go with the SteelSeries Apex Mini Pro to see what all the rage is...I've heard time and time again that SteelSeries makes some of the best big-box branded keyboards out there (non-custom).
As soon as I received my Apex Mini Pro, I immediately cracked it open and set it up. The unboxing was pretty average. With this version, you only get the keyboard itself and a nice, lengthy, braided USB-C to USB-A cable. I love that the cable is detatchable, even though this keyboard is ONLY wired. There is a wireless version, but I'm more of a wired guy, myself when it comes to keyboards and mice.
Once I got it hooked up and everything powered on, I installed the SteelSeries Engine/GG software. I've heard about a lot of bloat here, but honestly, it's not that bad and I believe I like it more than the software I've been using for my other brand. The RGB is fantastic! I also love the textured feel of the PBT keycaps. They don't show oils/smudges/grease like some of my other boards show and I like how the RGB shines through. My fingers also don't feel as "slippery" when gaming for long sessions. Really, my only complaint with the keycaps is that when you hold the function key to access the other layers (like if you want to hit an F key, Del, Arrows, etc)...while the keyboard lights around the various keys for that function level...the text for the secondary layers and such do not light up on the keyboard like the regular letters and numbers do. This kind of makes it a pain using it in the dark, especially while you're still learning where everything is at. I'm not docking for this, though, as my other 65% board was the same and with other brands, this also appears to be the norm.
I did test out the Omnipoint actuation speed and the dual-layer action key bindings. For the actuation features, I freaking LOVE it! I set it to the top, for the fastest speed and haven't looked back. This makes barely touching the key register vs. having to press it halfway to register the keypress. This makes it great for fast-paced games like CoD or even an MMO like FFXIV, where you need to move as SOON as you press that key. Alternatively, you can set this as per-key, as well. So, if you have a key you don't use often but say, accidentally hit a lot, you can set the actuation point to the very bottom, so you really have to press it for it to register! As for the dual-action keybinds...I was less impressed by this one mostly because it just doesn't' feel...natural. This basically sets the key to where a light press does one thing, then a full press does a second thing. But, it's incredibly hard to "train" yourself to do this. I'll stick with the Omnipoint speed adjustments, but for the type of games that I play, I don't ever see myself using the dual-action binding feature. But, that's my personal preference. It's still a great option to have!
I am, however, going to dock a star from my review for the build quality of the keyboard. Unlike the other Apex Pro boards, this one is metal only on the top, around the keys. Elsewhere else (sides and such), it's plastic. This keeps the board from feeling 100% premium compared to SteelSeries/s other flagship boards (like the Apex Pro TKL). Additionally, given the price of this Apex Pro Mini board, I would have loved to seen a small OLED screen like on the other models and they also skimped out on providing their outstanding wrist wrest, like they have on their other keyboards. My guess is...the ones provided with their others magnetically attach. BUT...where this one only has plastic around the outside...there's no possibility of it attaching magnetically. But...even without that, I would have loved to have seen a matching wrist rest provided. It doesn't have to attach!
But don't let that one-star dock fool you. Let me just say this...I loved this keyboard SO much that I went all-in on SteelSeries. I got their Aerox 9 MMO/MOBA mouse and their QcK Prism XL mousepad. And just the other day, I ordered their new Arctis Nova Pro headset. So, I am now fully a 100% SteelSeries guy. I believe this is the first time a product has impressed me so much that I just ditched everything I already had and went 100% in...
So yes. If you're looking for a smaller, compact keyboard and won't miss immediate access to your F keys, arrow keys and such (honestly, how much do we REALLY use those when gaming?)...GET THIS KEYBOARD. Besides, It's not like those keys aren't just a function-keypress away!

Great keyboard with so many features. Let's start with the size, its a 60% layout, I like smaller layouts as it saves tons of space on my desk (you still get most of the functions of a full sized keyboard, it's just that some keys have a dual function, printed on the side, you just press the steelseries logo key in combination with any of those other ones (like F row keys, insert, delete and even the arrow keys, only con is that those side legends are not RGB see through, so you must have a desk light to see them, unless you memorize them). I would have preferred a 65% which would include the arrow keys by themselves and other like delete or insert, but I'm just cherry picking.
They include a nice braided USB type C cable and a key cap puller that hides beneath the keyboard with a rubber flap. I have my own aviator cable, so I'm not using the included cable, but its nice. The key caps are made of dual shot PBT plastic (finally a large gaming company including these! These have a nice texture you can feel and they will never get oily or shiny, like most other keycaps made of ABS plastic). They sound nice and there was little pinging on the keyboard. The switches are Steelseries own Omnipoint ones (these are 2nd gen though). They feel like a linear switch, however you can tune the actuation point in their GG engine software (which I found very easy to use and, most importantly, it does not take much resources, its very light, unlike other that hog your CPU). I live how customizable the switches are. You can either set the whole keyboard actuation points using the hotkey on the keyboard, or per key in their software. I have my WASD, crouch and spacebar keys to the lowest point for fast response when playing Rainbow six siege. I also love a function called "dual actuation", this one is a winner. You can set a key to perform a function in your game if you press lightly and if you press more another. In example, in rainbow six, I have my "C" key setup so if I press lightly my character will crouch, but if I press if hard, he will prone, amazing!! The RGB lighting is nice but not that bright, since these are PBT keycaps, I like that.
Great gaming keyboard if you want to save space on your desk and frag like a champ!

Great grip, customization and portability

The grip on these keys is some of the best I have ever tried. The texture is unmistakable. It’s like deck tape compared to a smoothed out set of keys we’ve almost all have created on a keyboard at least once in our lives. That grip gives you a bit of finger placement confidence and that’s welcome for anyone who is used to a larger keyboard layout.
Where this keyboard shines are the portability and the absurd amount of customization offered. Even the key removal tool is perfectly hidden behind a rubber flap on the back of the board that also serves as a dust cover for the tool and manufacturer information tags.
It is a dense keyboard but that is something I will not hold against it in my case. It doesn’t want to move when I’m using it and that’s exactly what I want.
This keyboard is designed for those who want a COMPLETE customization experience in the smallest gaming keyboard factor without sacrificing functionality. Combining multiple actions to a single key using the 2-in1 action keys trims down finger travel between actions to nothing but key travel distance that you can define to the nearest 0.1mm. It’s incredible to see this level of fidelity in just our keystrokes and how we can use this to improve a gaming experience when provided in some of the best equipment you can buy off the shelf.

Feels great especially with the feature about its actuation only issue I really have is the price and spacebar being a little loud. My family member thought someone was knocking the door but I was just spamming spacebar! I personally don’t like steel series software and would recommend a wooting60he even though it can takes a couple of months I still think it’s worth it, it feels better, is modable so you can switch out the case and whatnot, and you do not need to install any software you can change settings in the keyboard just from a browser not unnecessary background apps needed unless you want to download it as well! But if you can’t wait the couple of months and need a keyboard like the wooting60he then the steelseries is still an amazing choice but do get it on sale at an affordable and reasonable price!

Excellent keyboard I recommend it! It’s really good if your on pc because you can change how much you have to press the keys. I use it to play Fortnite and it’s excellent. It’s one of the fastest keyboard on the market. To me it’s worth the money. The rgb lighting is excellent and it sounds good. It’s a really small keyboard so it fits on my desk nice compared to some of the bigger 60% keyboards I have. But by far this one is my favorite. Also In the box it comes with the software you can yse to change the rgb and the Acuation on the keyboard which is how far you have to press down the button. This keyboard is great for gaming and work. And that is all hope I win the $400 giftcard! :)

Best keyboard out there for gaming thanks to its low Actuation switches, and the keyboard sounds almost perfect, you can barley hear it with headphones on, and without them on this keyboard still sounds good, I have had this keyboard for a while now, and it hasn't had any problem's, it is very fast for any game, and with updates, it just gets faster, ill give this a 9/10 and would HIGHLY reccomend it to any gamers.
