STUNNING PICTURE QUALITY! BEWARE OF OLDER REVIEWS!

After my 7 year old Sony flagship model TV failed recently, I knew I couldn't afford the OLED TV I wanted so I started researching mid-range priced mini-LED TVs that would offer me something close to the picture quality and features I was used to. I looked at comparable models from Hisense, Samsung, LG and even the TCL R655 (2022 model). I AM THRILLED THAT i FOLLOWED MY INSTINCTS AND BOUGHT THE TCL R646. The picture quality is absolutely STUNNING, it was more affordable than recent model releases and has all the features, bells and whistles to future proof this TV for at least a few years. I have a complete Dolby Atmos home theater setup and needed my TV to at least play well with my existing technology. Surprisingly, the R646 has brought new features and therefore new life to my home theater. The TV has two HDMI 2.1 inputs, one with eARC and several other features, like mini-LED tech, that makes the picture bright, with gorgeous color and contrast and deep blacks. The R646 is identical to this year's TCL R655 except the former uses the Google TV interface and the latter, latest model returns to Roku. As a Sony TV owner, I love Google TV so choosing the R646 for several hundred dollars less than the R655 was a no-brainer. And PLEASE BEWARE OF EARLIER REVIEWS. I understand that the R646 was released in 2021 with a ton of significant glitches, but TCL has cured all the issues with the several firmware updates it has made throughout 2022. Therefore, though a 2021 model technically, it is perfectly on par with the 2022 model in terms of picture quality and features. It's unfortunate that this TV had a rough launch because it definitely resulted in poor reviews that now deceptively make this look like an average TV. It is not. It's an exceptional mid-range TV for the price and lives up to the TCL 6 Series reputation.

TV works great with my Xbox series X and being able to play at 120hz. It makes the gameplay feel so much smoother. This TV supports every new feature that the XSX has.
The picture quality is very good, I came from a Samsung TV (KS8000) which still has very good picture quality but where the TCL beats it is the black levels. I was really impressed by how deep the blacks are. OLED TVs still have deep blacks but this is getting really close. You hardly see any graying when there black in the screen.
As for some saying the apps are buggy, I have not encountered any issues at all. I've already used Netflix, Hulu, sling tv, Disney Plus, YouTube, Crunchyroll and several more and i have not had any issues.
I also have a previous TCL with Roku and I can say the Google TV feela so much smoother. It's not perfect, it can definitely be a bit more organized. I haven't found a way to edit the app list so my most used apps are at the front but I'm sure the platform will continue to improve.
I setup my soundbar immediately since I have a Vizio Dolby Atmos one so I have not used the speakers. I don't usually use them as i feel most modern sets don't have the greatest speakers.
Overall all, this is definitely one of the best gaming TV's you can buy right now. Any of the next gen consoles will work perfectly with this tv.

A month review:
Finally....this is a tv that has a hdmi 2.1 slot for 4k at 120hz on the xbox series x...and has an adjustable stand width. (I didn't want to upgrade my tv stand at the same time) I just dont understand how other companies have not thought about their customer base like this...
The picture quality is what I expected...yes the tv is a litte thicker and heavier than others...but still looks refined with great picture quality.
I have the google version of this tv (not the roku)...and it has performed to my standards. I have not had any of the glitches that other reviewers have talked about. (Maybe it was fixed in an update) sometimes I may accidentally click the wrong button on the remote and try to reverse the course and it has to think for a second...but thats expected...
If you're looking for a tv to utilize your next gen gaming system while not breaking the bank...check this out.

For context, I bought both the 6-Series and the 2022 5-Series. This TV blew the 5-Series out of the water. It's better on everything: more vibrant and crispier videos, better contrast, better reflection handling, deeper black, much faster response especially for watching sports. As far as Google TV goes, it's pretty fast. My guess is that most of the previous bugs were fixed. I wish there were an option to turn off ads on the Home screen though.
Just a few tips:
- Make sure to check for dead pixels and dirty screen effect after you get the TV (search for "Run this video on your TV now" on Youtube).
- Recommended picture settings: Turn off Eco mode in Settings. Choose Movie mode and Warm color temperature. If you want to do further color calibration, search for "R-Tings TCL R646 calibration settings".
- Enable App only mode by going to Settings, Accounts and Sign-in for a cleaner Home screen.
- To use Google Assistant to turn on and off your TV, make sure the physical Mic switch on the back of the TV is at On position. Then go to Settings, System, Power and Energy, turn on both Quick Start and Screenless Service.

I've had this TV for a year now and it has exceeded all of my expectations. Colors are vibrant, UI is snappy, and HDR is sexy. I currently have a PS5 connected and there's no greater feeling then having your system tell you the TV connected will give you the maximum quality possible. If you have a current gen system, this is the TV to get.

4 1/2 stars. Great picture, flawless panel. Even better than my Sony Bravia X900E. Upscaling of less than 4K not as good as my Sony but color, motion, contrast and deep black and lack of blooming better than TV's twice the price. Yes, Google software OS is still a bit glitchy and quirky, not Apple smooth and reliable, but at this price, quality, and value I can handle it until more updates come down the pike.

TCL not honoring warranty. Buyers Beware

I was looking for a tv that supported 120hz gaming, and would look good for movies with local dimming and decent size. Ill start off by saying the first two months of having the tv it looked great until it didn't. Month three came along and the tv started showing tic tac toe grid lines and dark spots. It also has a white rectangular box in the center of the display that shows up in content and is distracting. I contacted TCL and sent them pictures of the defect expecting them to repair or replace the panel. They did not honor the warranty. I was told "This is normal and does not show defects". Respectfully as an IT technician this is not normal, you should not see grids or white bars on a brand new tv. I believe most anyone would not be happy with a tv showing grids and a white rectangular box in the middle of their screen. Trying to play games or watch content is distracting and ruining the experience. I purchased the GeekSquad protection, and will have to contact them to get this resolved. Buyers beware you may get a lemon like me and be stuck without support. I would not recommend this tv to anyone if the manufacture will not cover defective units and honor their warranty to protect its customers.

It’s been two years now and this tv still works perfectly. Also, this tv is super bright which even with sunlight glaring in my living room, the need to go over ninety percent was not thought of. There are plenty of settings to tweak the audio/video to your liking. This is my second tcl tv, with the first one bought in 2015(which is still being used) and this one being two years old now; I will continue to buy more from this brand.

Great TV Overall! The picture is stunning colors and the mini-LED is great. However, my one criticism is the software needs some debugging, as the remote microphone doesn't work with all apps in the Google TV software for example works with Google assistance, but the microphone is unresponsive in apps like Youtube and Disney +. I'm hoping this is a bug that can be fixed in the near future otherwise I would consider returning the TV.
See the image below showing the bug with microphone usage in apps.

I’m pretty happy with this TV so far. I had a Hisense U8G for a few weeks before needing to exchange it because of a defect in the panel and I will say the color accuracy is better on the R646 - I have no dirty screen effect and the bugs that were plaguing the unit upon its original release have not been troublesome for me. It doesn’t quite have that same pop in speculate highlights that the U8G did, but it’s a very well balanced and sharp image. I’m not a gamer, I’m here for accurate film playback and it does 24fps content nicely. I’d probably give it closer to a 4.5 if I could because the remote feels cheap and the operating system needs some tweaks but it’s still early in the lifespan!

Big. Bright & Beautiful - What's Not to Like?

The picture is bright, and excels in SDR and HDR - with minor tweaking. (Tip - whatever you do, get it out of the default low power mode. For most accurate colors, use the Movie mode, and if you like it punchier, use Smart HDR.) It really punches far above its price point.
The negatives are minor for me, but the top of the list is Google TV. There is no way to select an input (like a cable box, game console, or Blu-ray player) from the Home Screen. You have to go into settings, and they are all three clicks away and you have to know where to go. That is crazy for someone who just wants to watch TV or play a game.
The second negative is that it isn't so good at upscaling SD (standard definition) content like DVDs or SD streaming content. The Sonys are *much* better at processing stuff like this. But, I guess they had to cut corners somewhere, and with SD content becoming more rare, I guess that is not an unreasonable choice.
Overall, great TV and a good value.

Great tv! The tv plays in full 4K. It has hdr10 and Dolby vision. Has a total of 4 hdmi ports, 2 of them are hdmi 2.1. Perfect for gaming at 4K 120hz. The picture is great. Very crisp and colors are amazing. Brightness is very good. The google os is very snappy and easy to use. This tv out prices many TVs on the market with its features and quality. Would definitely recommend it.

Bought this TV mainly for my PS5, and have loved it. The 120 refresh rate makes the games run real smooth. The 3d audio sounds really awesome as well. You can measure your room acoustics with the TV speakers, which makes some games sound really submersive. The vivid option makes the Nintendo Switch Mario games seem really nice too.

I love how great everything looks in my TCL 65”. All of our TVs are TCL as the brand makes good products!! Two TVs are Roku TV and one is the Google one. We use Apple TV anyways but I find that the Google TCL one is more slower and hard to follow “commands” once you hook everything together with the surround system. But other than that, love love love TCLs!! And appreciate their low prices.

I bought this TV exactly a year ago, I have not been disappointed. It's a well built TV, I have been pleasantly surprised at every turn, picture quality and the built in speakers are exceptional for the price point. The sound is so good, I never got around to purchasing the sound bar I intended on getting.
Money well spent. It truly lives up as the Frugal Mans Sony.

The best picture of any TV I own. However, connectivity issues happen once in a while. Struggle to Cast to the TV about 40% of the time. Would expect better on a TV with this price tag.
